A/N: This piece was very loosely inspired by the suggestion of magitech that the boys in Harry's year complain to McGonagall about Hermione barging into their dorm at will and without warning. I however did something different as I think there's something much further that should have happened that would prevent this from ever even being an issue. I set this piece after the Battle of Hogwarts with McGonagall now Headmistress and having a bit more real power. The truth is that this scenario should have happened way before Harry's time but that's just the way I wrote it.
On August 31st, 1998, the day before Hogwarts was set to reopen after the Battle of Hogwarts, a headline appeared in the Daily Prophet about a major change that was being implemented at Hogwarts stating with the fall 1998 semester. The headline read:
Hogwarts students to get own dorm rooms. All students banned from entering each other's rooms.
Late last night, Professor Minerva McGonagall, named new Headmistress of Hogwarts by Temporary Minister of Magic Kingsley Shacklebolt in the aftermath of the Battle of Hogwarts, confirmed to the Daily Prophet that the roommate concept has been jettisoned at Hogwarts and that starting with the fall 1998 semester, every student at Hogwarts shall receive his or her own dorm room and that students will now be banned from entering each other's rooms.
"Each room for five has been magically reconfigured into five rooms for one," explained McGonagall, "Every student should have the solace of his or her own space and now he or she will."
Asked by Daily Prophet reporter Isiah Inquire about the benefits of eliminating the roommate concept, McGonagall responded by stating, "First, if a student wants or needs alone time, be it in the aftermath of a personal tragedy or a shocking event or because he or she just needs to get away from it all for a while, or if he or she just wants some quiet and solitude, he or she can go to his or her room and get it. It should also be noted that I am banning all students from entering the rooms of any other students. There's the issue of privacy. No student doing something private in his or her room should have to worry about other people barging in on him or her unexpectedly. Then there's the issue of possession security. There have been incidents at Hogwarts where students have stolen from other students, including incidents of students being the victims of thefts by their own roommates. Under my administration, each student's room will be magically programmed to recognize him or her and only ever allow him or her to access the room. There's also the sleep problem. Students need a good night's sleep to do their best academically and students could be awoken by things such as other students snoring. In fact, for many people, having one's own room is a necessary condition to being able to sleep well. Finally, and very importantly, is the issue of personality conflict. Even within a house, year, and gender combined, some people are going to be enemies or at least not get along too well and it's certainly best if those people aren't sharing rooms with each other. Furthermore, the roommate concept can in some cases be the root of enmity creation. Being roommates can lead to people becoming enemies with each other in some cases and axing the roommate concept will do its part of preventing the creation of some enmities. It should NEVER be necessary for a student to be in the room of another student as Hogwarts contain plenty of public spaces for meeting with others, including each house having a common room. Henceforth, having a room at Hogwarts means having one's own room."
A/N: All of the reasons given by McGonagall for getting rid of the roommate concept are in agreement with my own views.
