A/N: This is a continuation of chapter 30 and is part 2 of Hermione's parents helping her with making friends. I hereby dedicate this chapter to Tinsy-girl, who has been waiting a LONG time for the continuation of Hermione's parents helping her make friends. You all may remember that there was mystery boy in chapter 30. Who that boy is is revealed in this chapter.
It was 1 P.M. Sunday, August 19th, 1984, and Hermione's parents had pulled her aside to do some roleplaying.
They were in the living room, and Mr. and Mrs. Granger had set up five chairs in a row meant to mimic the swings on the playground in terms of number and being a row.
"So, Hermione," explained Mr. Granger, "I want you to watch your mom and I do a skit here. Pay attention to our interactions."
"And don't forget to think of these chairs as being like swings and of this room as being like the playground," added Mrs. Granger.\
Next nanosecond, Mr. Granger sat down on the leftmost chair.
About a minute later, Mrs. Granger approached Mr. Granger.
"Hello," said Mrs. Granger kindly, "My name is Emma Granger. What's your name?"
"I'm Dan Granger, " answered Mr. Granger, "Nice to meet you, Emma."
"It's nice to meet you too, Dan, " replied Emma, offering Dan her hand.
Dan and Emma exchanged a handshake.
"So, " said Hermione slowly, trying to take it all in, "That skit was meant to show me the proper way to introduce myself to a new person?"
"Yes, Hermione," said Emma approvingly.
"It's good to see that you picked up on that right away, " added Dan, "Now, I want you to do what your mom just did."
Hermione approached her father in the chair and piped up, "Hi, my name is Hermione Granger. What is your name?"
"I'm Dan Granger, " replied Dan, "It's nice to meet you, Hermione."
"It's nice to meet you too, Dan," returned Hermione, offering Dan her hand and Dan and Hermione exchanged a handshake.
"You seem to get it now, Hermione," said Emma in an encouraged voice, "Now we've got to see you apply that in real life."
"Now," interjected Dan, "Your mom and I both believe you already understand this part and it's more a matter of you being willing to do it, but we're going to practice sharing. "
Emma then removed four of the chairs so that only one remained.
"Hermione," instructed Emma, "I want you to sit down on the remaining chair. Your dad and I will leave the room for five minutes. When one of us comes in, I want you to offer up the chair."
"I understand," said Hermione matter of factly.
Dan and Emma left the room. Both returned five minutes later, but it was Dan who approached the chair.
"Dan?" asked Hermione, "Would you like to sit down?"
"Yes, please," answered Dan.
Hermione got up from the chair and said, "It's all yours."
"Thank you, Hermione," smiled Dan.
"That was perfect, " cooed Emma brightly, "Again, we need to see you apply sharing to real life."
"It's very important that you grasp these social skills as you go into Kindergarten so you can make friends, " added Dan.
"Mom. dad?" inquired Hermione, "I'm nervous about something. You know I treated that mousy haired boy on that swing at the playground pretty poorly yesterday. What if I come across him again?"
"If you see him on the swings again next Saturday, do the introduction we've practiced here first, as you would do with anyone, " suggested Dan, "After the introduction, then acknowledge how you acted towards him yesterday and apologize to him. Most people won't hold grudges except for very serious reasons."
"I understand," replied Hermione.
Hermione's parents would continue to do this type of roleplaying with her every day for the rest of the week.
On Saturday, August 25th, 1984, Dan and Emma took Hermione back to the playground, once again at 10 A.M.
Sure enough, the mousy haired boy from the week before was once again on the rightmost swing.
Once again, he was swinging high and fast and appeared as though he were a ball of energy in human form.
This time, Hermione approached him slowly.
Seeing her approach, the boy stopped swinging.
"Hello, " said Hermione kindly, "My name is Hermione Granger. What's your name?"
The boy looked at her, delighted.
"I'm Colin Creevey, " he introduced himself, "It's nice to meet you, Hermione."
"It's nice to meet you too, Colin," replied Hermione warmly.
"Why don't you take the swing next to mine and we can swing together for a while?" suggested Colin.
"Thanks, Colin," piped up Hermione happily.
As she sat down on the fourth swing from the left and second from the right, Hermione looked Colin eye to eye and said, "Colin, we met here last week I was really rude and condescending towards and I'd like to apologize-"
"Forget it," said Colin instantly, "That's water under the bridge. Everyone deserves a second chance, well expect for murderers."
"Let's swing together then," cooed Hermione and both Hermione and Colin began swinging.
Hermione and Colin had their fun on the swings, laughing and smiling.
However, just like the previous Saturday, the playground became busier towards the end of the 10 A.M. hour.
The swings quickly filled up and eventually all five swings were taken, and a line started to form.
Seeing this, Hermione and Colin both dismounted their swings and offered them to the first two kids in the line.
Once they were off the swings and had walked a few steps away from them, Hermione asked Colin, "Would you like to continue to play with me? My mom and dad are taking me home for lunch at noon, but we've got about another hour before that time comes."
"I'd love to continue playing with you, " said Colin eagerly, "Let's run through the tunnels."
"Sure," grinned Hermione.
Hermione and Colin had a blast running through the toy tunnels at the playground. After a while they started to race each other. Colin won these races, but Hermione didn't mind. She was having a great time all the same.
They later played on the bridges and monkey bars and took turns going down the slide.
When Hermione's parents approached her at noon to inform her it was time to go home for lunch, she told Colin, "Colin, it was wonderful meeting you and I hope we get a chance to play again together in the future."
"Same time next Saturday?" suggested Colin.
"What do mom and dad say about that?" Hermione asked Dan and Emma.
"YES!" chroused Dan and Emma.
"You and Colin clearly got on well and I sense the start of a potentially wonderful friendship, " said Emma glowingly.
"We need to encourage that friendship and it the opportunity it deserves to flourish, " said Dan radiantly.
"Hermione, you dad and I are very proud of you, " cooed Emma, "You clearly soaked up the lessons we gave you this week and it paid off with a new friend."
"It couldn't have gone any better, " smiled Dan.
