Hey! Sorry it's been a little while. I lost touch with the fandom, but thankfully Just-Tails reviewed this story and prompted me to get back to it again.
I hope you enjoy. If anyone has any suggestions for family-based fluffiness with the gang, then go ahead!
See chapter one for the disclaimer.
Red. Bright red. That was what coulor Knuckles wanted the walls of his bedroom to be painted. Maddie shuddered as she pictured it. It would look like a murder scene.
"You do not like it, Pretzel-Women?"
She jerked back to reality and looked down at the solemn-looking Echidna. "I just..." She struggled for the right words to use. "...Maybe not ALL the walls need to be red."
Knuckles nodded. "I am willing to be told."
She translated that as 'go ahead and tell me where I'm going wrong' and did just that.
"Well, if you put the red on just two of the walls and then go for either white or something else plain on the other two, I think it'll balance it out. And maybe try something that'll match your bedsheets a bit." She indicated the space-themed duvet that Knuckles had eventually decided on.
The echidna frowned. "Why is that necessary? Do I really need everything matching?"
Maddie was about to answer when she heard a howl of pain and, with a quick pat of Knuckle's head and a 'stay here', she shot off to see what had happened.
Tom was just coming down the stairs followed by a distraught-looking Tails. "Sonic hit his thumb." Her husband said, anxiously.
Tail's bottom lip wobbled as he said. "He was trying to attach the wings of the plane. I told him to leave it, I said I could handle it, but he wanted to help..."
Tom rubbed the kit's head reassuringly. "It's not your fault, kiddo. Sonic's stubborn like that, trust me, nothing you said would have made any difference..."
Her husband's voice got dimmer as Maddie headed down the stairs, two at a time. She could hear Sonic muttering curses already and saw him running his thumb under the tap.
"Here, let me see." She said, voice leaving no room for argument. Even then, Sonic tried.
"It's alright, Mo-"
"Sonic." He yielded and held his hand out. As soon as she touched it, he hissed. As gently as she could Maddie examined the thumb. Now, was it her fancy or was it a darker blue than the rest of him? Amazingly it wasn't bleeding, and no bits of bone were sticking out or anything. The boy seemed practically indestructible.
"I-is he alright, Miss Maddie?" She turned to see Tom and Tails looking at her. Tails seemed ready to cry and was dithering, as if unsure as what to do.
Maddie frowned and gently turned Sonic's hand over. He hissed but made no further fuss. "I'm not sure." She admitted. "I think I'll need to take him into my surgery tomorrow and do an X-Ray."
Tails immediately brightened. "Ooh-can I watch?"
"What's an X-Ray?" They all jumped at the sound of Knuckles's voice. He'd arrived at the top of the stairs without anyone hearing him, which was impressive for such a big guy.
"An X-Ray is where I use a machine to look at the bones in a patient's body." Maddie explained. "In this case, Sonic."
Sonic smiled and said, eagerly. "Cool! Can I have a copy of the picture?"
Maddie gave a laugh and stroked the top of his head, affectionately. "It doesn't work exactly like that, kiddo. But you'll see tomorrow."
