Death
By Socket
Laura knows death, knows it well. Knows its moods, its shifts. It strikes when she's unprepared, strikes when she's ready. It has no conscience, no mercy.
Whenever it comes at her, she's always surprised, as if she thought it wouldn't arrive.
Her father, her mother, her sisters, the world, Elosha, Billy… and yet, it hasn't claimed her, despite its many opportunities.
Death follows her; she feels an amity with it. She almost wishes it would take her with it when it fades… but she remains.
Death tracks her and pounces. It tracks her and stays in the shadows: death is unpredictable.
Laura has respect for death; it comes to everyone, the only question is 'when'.
She has eluded it, others she loves have not. She feels lucky, feels unworthy. Does her life have more meaning than those whose lives were taken? Laura thinks not, and yet, here she is. Still.
