Notes: A follow-up to the episode "The Deep Six Affair" (seeing as I watched it last night ). In the episode, Waverly orders Nappy and IK to look into another agent's fiancé, things happen, and at the end there's one of the slashiest moments ever. Waverly departs (to go to an agent's wedding) saying something along the lines of: "I still say that UNCLE agents do not make good husbands." As the door closes, IK goes to sit next to Napoleon and says, "Well, at least we have each other."
It wasn't like he'd been unaware of the policies regarding agents' personal lives, but until this latest affair he hadn't realized how strongly Mr. Waverly felt on the subject. Since then, Napoleon had quietly been looking through personnel files while taking special note of marital status, the length of the marriages (there were many that had divorced right before entering the agency or shortly thereafter), and watching for transfer or retirement requests.
Unsurprisingly, there was a huge gap between the number of marriages, let alone successful ones, involving section two agents and any other position in UNCLE. Among the scientists he noticed that fiancés weren't even mentioned until the agent had been a member of the organization for at least ten years. The number of refused transfers and retirements along with broken engagements made him wonder if Brian and Laura weren't the only couple Waverly had interfered with. Napoleon shook his head, telling himself that he would have surely heard something before now if that was the case. He was just being a tad paranoid.
"Haven't you finished dredging through those things?"
Napoleon looked up quickly, feeling his face heat at being caught. "I was just looking at the records of those two new transfers from Hong Kong," he lied smoothly.
His partner rolled his eyes tolerantly and took two strides to reach Napoleon's desk; before Napoleon could close the files, Illya had picked up the top file and was scanning it with skepticism.
"Napoleon, Agent Wojt is from West Germany." A blond eyebrow arched sharply. "And he retired two months ago."
Napoleon grunted softly and crossed his arms.
Illya sighed and let the file drop back onto the desk. "Napoleon, I do not understand this preoccupation."
Shaking his head, Napoleon ran a hand over his hair. "Even you aren't that cold." He grimaced as soon as the words escaped. "Damn. I'm sorry—"
Oddly enough, Illya chuckled. Napoleon looked up in surprise. Illya moved so that he stood by his partner's shoulder. "I sometimes wonder about you, my friend," he said as he leaned down. Napoleon stayed silent, unsure what was going on as Illya nuzzled his neck. "I told you, we have each other."
A long kiss later, Napoleon panted, "I can live with that..."
