Jane got up early the next day, hoping that Maura was just as anxious to talk to her and would also be at work early. She was disappointed to get down to the morgue and see that Maura's office was still dark and locked up. She sat down against the door and waited for her friend.

Maura had every intention of getting to work early to talk to Jane, but she had felt so exhausted that she just couldn't bring herself to get up early. When she finally got to her office, she was surprised to see Jane sitting on the floor. Jane jumped up when she saw Maura.

"Maur, are you okay?" she asked immediately.

"Do I look terrible or something?" Maura laughed, knowing she wasn't exactly looking her best.

"Are you kidding? You look amazing."

Jane wrapped her arms around Maura before she could even unlock her office door. Maura automatically started crying uncontrollably. She wasn't up for this, but it was exactly what she needed. Jane pulled back and unlocked the door for Maura, then led her to her office chair. She knelt on the floor in front of her, hands on her best friend's bare knees.

"What's going on, babe? This isn't like you."

"Jane," was all she could choke out at first.

"Is this about how sick you've been lately?" Jane was very concerned.

"Well, sort of..." Maura trailed off.

"Oh, no, Maura, don't tell me you're..."

"I'm pregnant, Jane."

"Wait, what? You're pregnant? Are you sure?" Jane stood up quickly.

"I haven't taken a test, but my body is definitely undergoing the normal hormone changes that happen in the early stages of pregnancy," Maura said softly.

"So you're guessing?" Jane laughed.

"It's not the same, Jane."

Jane noticed Maura was visibly shaken and upset over everything and she pulled her best friend out of her chair to bring her close. She wrapped her arms around Maura, resting her chin on her head as she often did when the other woman had kicked off her heels.

"You don't even have proof yet, Maura. No need to panic at least until you've taken the test. Why don't you just go take care of it in the lab?"

"I don't want anyone to know about this. I can't do it here."

"Okay," Jane said softly. "I get it. But...you really think you're pregnant? I mean, who? When?"

"Jane, I...I'm sorry," Maura was crying again.

"No, I'm sorry, Maur. You don't have to answer those questions. It's none of my business. Just take it easy today, okay?"

Maura nodded and Jane pushed her best friend's hair back off of her face. Maura shivered as Jane's hand brushed her cheek and slid down her bare arm to squeeze her hand.

"Let me know if you need anything?" Jane gazed into Maura's eyes.

Maura nodded again and watched Jane leave her office. She hoped no new cases came in today. She was finished with the retired detective and was looking forward to going home early, afraid to let anyone but Jane see her like this.

R&I*R&I*R&I*R&I*R&I*R&I*R&I*R&I

Jane spent the day with Frost and Frankie, interviewing every possible person who knew or associated with Rodney Zimmerman, the retired detective. Korsak had worked with the guy years ago and was getting together some of the others that had retired from their unit to find out if they knew anything that could help. Jane hated this, digging into the life of one of their own, treating him like any other murder victim. She knew they couldn't assume anything just because he had been a cop. Cops were just as capable, if not more so, of getting into the kind of trouble that gets you stabbed. From the interviews she'd done, she'd found out that Zimmerman was a gambler, an alcoholic, and cheating on his wife. It seemed no one was exempt from self-destructive behavior and Jane actually understood how someone who'd seen what they did every day could be driven to it. It made her a little afraid of where she would be in thirty years. She shook those thoughts from her head quickly, though, as she realized the truth. She wouldn't become that person because she had Maura, and Maura wouldn't let it happen. Jane had always been the one wanting to take care of Maura, but she hadn't ever really thought about how much Maura actually took care of her. She let Frost know she was taking a long lunch.

Half an hour later, Jane sat Maura down at the bar in her apartment and put some takeout boxes in front of her. Maura opened each one hesitantly. She was surprised to see what was in them.

"Kale salad and a quinoa burger? Really?"

"That's the kind of stuff you like, right? All those superfoods or whatever?"

"This was really sweet of you, Jane. Thank you."

"I got you something else, too," Jane told her.

Maura looked up questioningly from her salad.

"Eat first," Jane commanded.

Maura realized she was starving and ate quickly, not even commenting on Jane's choice of a greasy cheeseburger and fries. She finished before Jane even made a dent. Jane noticed her friend eyeing her "unhealthy choice" and pushed her takeout box across the counter. Maura grabbed a handful of fries and devoured them.

"God, those things are delicious," she groaned.

Jane laughed and watched as Maura finished off the rest of the fries and the other half of the burger.

"Still hungry?"

"No," Maura blushed. "I'm good now."

Maura took a sip from the glass of water Jane had given her. Jane grabbed a small paper sack out of the larger plastic one their food had been in and handed it over. Maura had already guessed what it was. She stood and took the pregnancy test box out of the bag. Jane pointed in the direction of the bathroom.

"Do it now."

"Come with me?" Maura whispered.

"I'll be right out here, Maura."
