A knock on Maura's bedroom door woke Jane and she glanced at the clock on the nightstand to see it was after 7 pm. She eased her right arm from behind Maura and shook it to get feeling back. They'd been asleep for nearly twelve hours. "Come in," she called.

The commotion caused Maura to wake up fully just as Angela opened the door a crack. "Are you girls hungry? I made gnocchi."

Maura quickly pulled the comforter up over her bare legs and gestured for Angela to come all the way in.

"Want to eat something, Maur?" Jane asked.

"Gnocchi does sound appetizing. If you'll give me a minute to get cleaned up and change into something more presentable, Angela, we can eat at the table." Maura put a hand to her hair, knowing it was probably a tangled mess. She really wanted a shower.

"Nonsense. I'll bring dinner to you, if you don't mind I stay and eat. Then you two can tell me more about what's going on."

"Thanks, Ma. That would be great," Jane answered for them both. She noticed her mother was holding a plastic sack and she nodded toward it. "What's in the bag?"

"I got everything on the list you sent me. These are the vitamins and supplements you asked for. I assume they go to Maura?" She held the sack out to her daughter's best friend.

Maura took it and gave a grateful smile. "You assume correctly. Thank you for doing this. I know I have a lot I need to explain and I promise I will over dinner."

"We both will," Jane added, putting a reassuring hand on Maura's arm.

"The food is ready," Angela told them. "Jane, come help me."

Jane got up and followed her mother to the kitchen. "So about what you saw earlier, with Maura and I..."

"You don't need to explain anything, Janie. Not about that, anyway." Angela filled three plates with steaming gnocchi.

"I don't? You're sure?" Jane was shocked. Her mother didn't need an explanation for something? This was a first.

"I've known about you two for a long time," Angela said simply.

"But Ma, that was the first time we, you know. I mean, there was one night, a few months ago. Something happened then, but I kind of panicked and messed it all up. I definitely never thought we'd be kissing again, especially so soon. And under these circumstances. I hadn't even figured out how I felt about her, really, not until this morning. This is all really new for me and we haven't talked about what it means, if anything."

"Jane, you're rambling. It means something. A mother knows." Angela grabbed a chair from the dining room table and passed it off for Jane to carry. "And your mother has known how you and Maura feel about each other for longer than the two of you have, apparently."

Jane looked thoughtful for a moment before she grabbed one of the dinner plates off the counter. "And you couldn't have told me?"

Angela laughed at that, grabbing the other two plates to follow Jane down the hall back to Maura's room. "Like you would ever listen to what I had to say."

"Fair enough," Jane shrugged. She put the chair down next to the nightstand and put a plate of food on it, then turned to take the other two plates from her mother, passing one off to Maura before climbing into bed with hers.

"What's fair enough?" Maura asked, curious about how the conversation was going.

"Ma claims she's known how I feel about you longer than I have, but that I wouldn't have listened to her if she'd tried to tell me." Jane shoveled gnocchi into her mouth, having finally realized how hungry she was.

"You wouldn't have." Maura took a delicate bite, wishing the Rizzoli women had thought to bring napkins to the room. She turned to Angela. "How does she feel about me? She hasn't exactly bothered to tell me."

Jane choked on her food. "Can we please change the subject?" She shot Maura a warning glance. "That's meant to be a private conversation between you and I."

"You and me." Maura took another bite of gnocchi. "This is really good, Angela."

"You and me what?" Jane asked.

"It's you and me, not you and I."

"Well, you and me are going to have this talk on our own, later," Jane huffed.

"You and I."

"Grammar, Maura, really? That's what you're worried about right now?"

Maura set her plate on the nightstand and took a deep breath. She really wasn't feeling great. "I'm worried about a number of things, Jane. I was only trying not to think about them for a moment."

Jane instantly regretted the way she'd spoken to her best friend. She reached out a hand to touch Maura, but the other woman got up and headed for the en suite bathroom, tugging the hem of her T-shirt down as she walked. Jane wasn't sure whether she was going to the bathroom to cry or throw up or if something worse was happening, but she knew better than to follow right away. She and her mother both were only a few feet away if Maura needed anything.

"Is she okay?" Angela asked softly.

"She's having a difficult time with the pregnancy." Jane also kept her voice low. "She's been throwing up so much and dehydrated. She has really low blood pressure that caused her to pass out last night. I took her to the hospital and her heart rate was crazy high. Her doctor says she's anemic and he seemed to think she will miscarry. She won't really talk about it, but I know she's having some pain and bleeding. The doc put her on bed rest basically until he clears her. She has another appointment with him in a few days, as long as everything stays the same."

"Poor Maura. This is the last thing she needs right now. How far along is she?"

"Just entering the second trimester, I think."

"And who's the father?" Angela tried to keep her face from looking judgmental.

"Um. Maybe I should let her..."

Maura came out of the bathroom then. She'd heard the end of the conversation. "I don't know who the father is," she said firmly. "It was a one night stand. I was heartbroken and drunk and I don't remember much of that night, but I take full responsibility."

"I'm not judging you," Angela assured her. "I love you like my own daughter. You don't have to explain yourself to me."

"That's so not how you treat your own daughter," Jane rolled her eyes. "Until today, I've always had to explain everything to you, in great detail."

"Stop it, Jane." Angela got up and collected their dinner plates. "I'm going to clean the kitchen and let you get some rest. Maura, you'll let me know if you need anything at all?"

"Of course, Angela," Maura smiled. "Thank you."

Angela left the room and Maura shot Jane a look. "Thanks, Ma!" Jane yelled after her, looking sheepish. "Frost is coming to talk about the case tomorrow morning, if you're feeling up to it. Do you want to go back to sleep?"

"I'd really like to take a shower," Maura sighed.

"How 'bout a bath?" Jane suggested. "I'll sit with you."

Maura nodded. She had to admit that actually sounded nice. Under different circumstances, she might have asked Jane to sit with her in the bath. Jane kissed her cheek and went to run the water.
