A/N: Hey everyone! I apologize for being away forever. I got distracted working on an original novel and fell off fanfiction for awhile, but I'm back and hope to stay back more consistently until all my stories are completed.

Jane again woke up to what sounded like a baby crying. Maura was in bed next to her and she tried to wake her.

"Maur." Jane shook her gently. "Do you hear that? It sounds like a baby."

Maura didn't stir. Jane groaned. She hated deja vu. She got out of bed and headed toward the source of the sound. She reached Maura's guest room and opened the door. The lavender nursery was the same, but the crying had stopped. Jane went to the crib and looked in, but there was nothing there. She reached in to move the blanket, but when she blinked, the crib was gone.

Jane sank to the floor, sure she was losing her mind. Had she been sleepwalking? Looking around the room now, it looked like the same old guest room it had always been. No nursery. No crying baby. She was shocked by the sudden grief she felt at the realization that none of it had been real. She looked up, blinking, as the overhead light was switched on.

"Jane? What's wrong? What are you doing in here?" Maura stood in the doorway, looking concerned.

"I don't know. I just had a dream, I guess," Jane mumbled.

Maura crossed the room and knelt in front of her, putting her hands on Jane's knees. "Was it Hoyt?"

"No, nothing like that," Jane assured her. "It wasn't really a bad dream, just strange."

"Do you want to tell me about it?"

"I don't really remember." Jane put her own hands over Maura's and leaned forward to kiss her best friend's forehead.

"Okay." Maura looked skeptical, but didn't push the subject. "Would you like to come back to bed then?"

Jane nodded, then stood, helping Maura to her feet. "You feeling okay?"

"Yeah," Maura shrugged and put an arm around Jane's waist. She stayed like that until they got back to her bedroom. She waited for Jane to get into the bed, then got in behind her, wrapping her arms around her friend and pressing her face into her dark hair. She was used to Jane protecting her, but it worked both ways. It always had.

Two Weeks Later

Jane and Frost were getting ready to go in and interrogate a suspect when she got a text from Maura.

I need you.

Jane stopped in her tracks and her blood turned cold.

"What is it?" Frost asked with concern.

"Maura," she replied.

"Is she okay?"

"I don't know."

She sent a quick text. Are you okay?

No. Maura's answer came immediately.

Jane couldn't speak, so she showed Frost the message. "Go. I'll take care of this," he told her.

After letting her know she was coming, Jane sped to Maura's with her lights and sirens on. She barged into the house, almost breaking her key off in the lock. Maura was in a T-shirt and a pair of Jane's gray sweatpants, but her hair was washed and she had a little bit of makeup on. She looked okay, but tired. Maybe more tired than she had in weeks. Jane knelt down in front of her. "Maura?" Maura's face was stoic, emotionless, so very hard to read. This made Jane worry even more. "Maura, honey, what is it?"

"I need you to take me to the hospital."

Apparently Maura had called Dr. Roark ahead of time because he met them at the emergency room and had already secured a room for her. Jane hadn't been told what was going on, but she had an idea. Maura didn't ask her to stay during the exam, but she didn't ask her to leave either, so she stood next to the bed and held her hand.

Maura didn't ask any questions and Dr. Roark didn't have to say anything. She had lost the pregnancy. That much was clear. Jane controlled her breathing to keep from showing emotion. Maura remained quiet and calm as the doctor told her she'd need a D&C.

The procedure would happen right away. Jane knew she had to be strong for Maura, no matter what she was feeling. She wasn't allowed to have feelings about what was happening. She kissed Maura's cheek before they took her away, then sat down and called her mom.

Dr. Roark came at some point to tell Jane the procedure was finished and Maura would be in a recovery room until she woke up from the anesthesia. He said there were some complications and Maura would be admitted to the hospital at least overnight. She'd needed a blood transfusion. He told Jane she would likely be very weak and in pain when she woke and directed her to the nurses station to find out what room Maura would be brought to.

Jane didn't know how long it took before Maura got to her new room from recovery, but it felt like twelve hours. As soon as the nurses left them alone, Jane rushed to Maura's side.

"Hey, honey. How are you feeling? What can I do for you?" She pushed Maura's hair back from her face.

Maura stared blankly a head for a moment. "Will you just go?"

"You need me to go get something from your house? I can make a list." Jane's voice broke. "Whatever you need."

"I need you to leave, Jane. You didn't want this, not for me and certainly not for yourself. You think I was careless." Maura paused. "You got what you wanted, but I can't do this with you. Please go."

Jane backed away from the bed, frustrating tears stinging her eyes. Maura couldn't really mean it. She wouldn't push Jane away when they were getting so close. Would she?

"Maur, that's not true. This isn't what I wanted. I only want you to be okay and happy."

Tears streamed down Maura's face, but she didn't waver. "Please, Jane. Leave me alone." She turned over in the hospital bed so she was no longer facing Jane.

A/N: I did a lot of foreshadowing, so I'm sure a lot of you saw this coming. I feel like I should still apologize for taking this route, but this is a darker story and I want it to ultimately be about the comfort and healing that can come after pain and loss. I hope you all can forgive me and keep reading. Please leave me reviews, whether good or bad.
