Piecing up the Puzzle

Yumi had just stepped into the house and was hanging up her coat when she heard car doors shut outside. She turns and steps back out onto the porch. Her husband and children start walking up. Her eyebrows scrunch in confusion, but she quickly hides such confusion to greet them.

"Hey, how was your day?" She asks.

"It was ok." All three state. Ulrich steps up to her to give her a kiss in greeting once again.

"We need to talk again." He whispers. She hums in understanding and they share their little greeting kiss. The twins step up.

"I found a couple of movies and bought some popcorn. Maybe we can have a movie night?" She suggests, knowing that's what they did last time. She wouldn't mind watching the same movie. It was a cute movie about a dog.

"Sure." Both twins say and hug their mom tight, tighter than they have in a long time. She's surprised a bit and hugs them both tight as well, not complaining. She loves hugs from her family.

"Go ahead and get settled, ok? I'll make dinner and then we can have our movie night." They nod and step inside the house. The parents step in as well, going to the kitchen, Yumi starts grabbing various food items and ingredients out of the cupboards. Ulric grabs the cutting boards they need, seeing the ingredients being pulled out, he's picked up on what she plans to make. "So, what happened? How was there a return trip?" She asks as she grabs things.

"I'm not sure, Jeremie is looking into it. He may have found something, but he called while I was driving. I haven't called him back yet. I have my suspicions though…" Ulrich trails off.

"Oh yea?" She grabs a cutting board and starts chopping up some bell peppers. Ulric grabs a knife and starts cutting up some onion, knowing Yumi hates cutting them.

"Things are different, as you probably can tell. Last time, the twins didn't show up to my office until almost nine o'clock. Now it's a little after Five. They found a guitarist, they chose Giovanni, but last time Shiro said they had a couple of considerations."

"What was happening before the jump back…?"

"The school was on fire, and our kids were missing. Jeremie passed out from one of his attacks when he found out Dimitri was missing too. So were Odd's kids. Is that a coincidence…? I mean… What if… our kids turned the computer back on…?" He speaks in a hushed tone. Yumi pauses what she's doing to think. She looks to her husband once she comes up with something.

"I have an idea, but we might have our secret spilled as well…" She trails off now.

"If what we think happened had happened, we'll have to anyway." He mentions.

"How confident are you in your theory?"

"I'm not sure… The more I think about it, the more likely it seems, I mean… plug outlets bursting, short circuits, catastrophe, that has XANA written all over it." Yumi nods, she places her vegetables into a skillet and starts sautéing them. Ulrich comes over with the vegetables he chopped up and she pours them in as well.

"Can you cut up the chicken for me?" He nods and grabs the chicken from the other side of the counter and grabs a different cutting board to cut the raw chicken into slivers. "I actually would have made this for dinner tomorrow, but we're all home now, so…"

"Which reminds me, Shiro needs to talk to you about something. I'd rather he tell you than me, but I'm sure you'll understand."

"Alright?" She raises an eyebrow, and it starts twitching, Ulrich bites his lip to keep from smiling, finding it entertaining. "What's wrong, now?"

"Oh, nothing." He knows she'll get mad at him for laughing. She rolls her eyes and continues sautéing. "I wonder how your parents would feel if they knew you were making a Chinese dish rather than a Japanese one."

"Honestly, I don't care, it's my kitchen after all. And I like stir fry." Ulrich sets the cutting board of chicken over. "It might be a bit different because I didn't put them in a marinade, but they should still taste good. Can you start on the rice?" Ulrich nods and grabs a box of instant rice from the cupboard, pouring a few cups of it into a rice maker, placing butter and salt. There're little thumps out in the living room, indicating the twins had sat down to watch tv while they wait for dinner. Yumi finishes up the stir fry, having added seasonings and herbs as well to it of course. "Dinner!" She calls out. The twins come out to eat, filling their plates and sitting down. They start eating, everything is quiet, even from Shiro, who is mostly poking at his food, taking the occasional bites.

"Is something wrong, kiddo?" Ulrich asks, trying to get the train rolling.

"No, I'm fine. Just a little on my mind." Shiro softly explains, not looking up from his plate.

"Because of what happened earlier?" Shiro nods in response to his father's question, but tenses, knowing what will happen next. His mother will want to ask what's going on.

"What happened earlier?" Aaaaand there it is. Shiro sighs, internally cursing. He knows he can't hold it back now. If he were to try, Yumi would keep asking until she got her answer.

"I snapped at Missi today, she was annoying me. Principal Delmas gave me an hour of detention for tomorrow."

"Oh, I see." That's all Yumi can think to say.

"I say the brat had it coming." Akira states, biting into a piece of chicken, she's keeping from cussing in front of her parents.

"Whether she did or not, I shouldn't have lost my temper like that and I kind of feel bad…" Shiro's voice slowly starts to disappear and become a little raspy as he tries to keep from crying.

"It's not your fault, sweetheart. I understand. I had a similar situation. This one boy named William, he wouldn't leave me alone for so long and he'd never seem to get the picture. It was inevitable that you two would end up with problems like this." Yumi explains. "I mean, two good looking parents? You were doomed from the start." She's trying to lighten the mood.

"I don't have it happening to me though." Akira says, a little bit of resentment.

"That's because of your temper." Shiro mutters.

"Hey!"

"You scare away boys. Maybe you can just date Dimitri? I mean, he's not afraid to stand up to you."

"Eww! He's like a brother to me!" Akira throws a snow pea at his head. Shiro closes his eyes and puts his arm up to block it, a futile effort, but it makes him laugh. It honestly makes Yumi and Ulrich smile a bit. Shiro grabs the snow pea with his chopsticks and eats it. "That's more gross…"

"So what? It only touched my hair."

"Which you haven't washed since yesterday morning!"

"So what? No one can tell, it's too dark." He fluffs up his bangs a little.

"But I can tell! It's gross!" He picks up a piece of chicken and throws it at her. She catches it in her mouth by leaning back in her chair. She raises her arms up in triumph, but it then falls to the floor.

"Oh gosh, are you ok?!" Yumi asks, being a worried parent, perhaps kinda overly worried. Akira climbs to her feet.

"Yea, I'm good. That was an awesome catch though!" She picks up her chair and sits back down. Ulrich smiles more, though with a hint of sadness. After a moment of peace, Yumi pipes up.

"So, how's your plug outlet?" Laying out her trap.

"What?" It takes Akira a moment to remember. "Oh, yea, it's fine now." Then she realizes. "Oh wait…" Shiro's eyes widen while he's mid bite, realizing his sister messed up. "Um, what outlet?" She knows her mom isn't that stupid. "Fuck…" She mumbles. "Wait, how do you remember I told you about it?" Ulrich looks to Yumi, she looks to Ulrich. They both nod before looking back to Akira.

"Because I went to Lyoko too." She admits.

There's a noise outside Dimitri's door. He looks up from his homework immediately. He stands from his desk chair and peeks out the door, though sees nothing. He shrugs it off, shutting the door and sitting back down, but only for a moment.

"You went to Lyoko?" Shiro asks. "It's some game, huh?" Dimitri hears the noise again. This time, he steps out his door.

"It's not much of a game… Not to us." Yumi starts. Dimitri shuts his door and walks in the direction of the noises. "It was a battle for life and death, not only for our lives, but for the rest of humanity. XANA is an evil entity hellbent on taking over the world, seeing us humans as lesser than him."

"XANA?" Shiro inquires, not hearing the name before.

"Dimitri must not have uncovered the name of the one creating the creatures you probably fought, or who started the fire." Ulrich says. Dimitri continues down the hall, but bumps into Jeremie.

"What's going on?" Jeremie asks him.

"I keep hearing noises…" Dimitri admits. "I don't know… Maybe I'm just tired…"

"Well, it's been a long day. Tell you what, why don't we go out to eat rather than have cafeteria food, how's that sound?" Jeremie asks.

"Um, sure." Dimitri smiles a little.

"Great! I'll go get Maya. Go get dressed." Dimitri nods and turns, walking back to his room.

"So we're all in danger now because of that damn cat's curiosity?" Akira asks angrily, not caring about watching her language right now.

"Seems like it." Ulrich replies to her.

"It's not Dimitri's fault. He was just curious!" Shiro shouts, defending his best friend.

"So was Jeremie. He's the one who turned the computer back on before, over twenty years ago. We got roped in because XANA kept on attacking him." Ulrich explains. "That's why we're all so close I'd say. Me, Yumi, Jeremie, Aelita and Odd. We called ourselves the Lyoko warriors. We made a pact to keep it a secret, but you two now know about it, so you two are part of it, no going back. Every return trip, every pain, every piece of trauma, you will remember it." The twins look down, now both terrified.

"Who all took the plunge?" Yumi asks.

"Me, Shiro, Dimitri, Anna and Gio." Akira counts on her fingers as she lists off the people.

"Stern, Della Robbia and Belpois, how funny…" Ulrich remarks. "Now all we need is your cousin Yuki and we'd have an Ishiyama too." He's trying to lighten the mood, but sees Yumi's eyebrows knit together in anger.

"We're not involving my niece in this!" Yumi shouts. Ulrich's eyebrows knit together for a split second at Yumi's reaction.

"It was a joke! Geez, calm down…" Yumi huffs through her nose and picks up her plate, taking it the sink. The twins glance to each other, standing and taking care of their plates as well and start working on putting the leftovers away. Though they're doing it to try and keep their mother calm. Though really, she's giving Ulrich the opportunity to contact Jeremie and tell him everything. Ulrich knows Yumi isn't really mad over a silly joke. Having spent over twenty years by her side, he's picked up on a lot, especially when she's truly angry. He gets the message, standing, leaving his plate at the table as he heads for the bathroom. He shuts the door and pulls out his phone, taps it a few times, before putting it to his ear. He figures contacting Jeremie in secret would be best in case something is said that the twins shouldn't know.

"Hello?" Jeremie asks on the other line.

"What did you want to say while I was on my way home?" Ulrich starts first before getting to the main thing. He has an idea on how he'll react…

"The computer isn't on, so I'm not sure how it could be XANA, unless he's still able to get out of the computer without it being on. But why would he trigger a return trip? I still don't know how the return even happened anyway, this computer is the only one that can do it, right?" Ulrich lets Jeremie finish his thoughts before speaking up.

"Dimitri turned the computer on." Ulrich explains immediately. 3… 2… 1… He pulls his phone away from his ear just in time, just hoping that Jeremie doesn't blow out his phone speaker. Again…

"WHAT?! How do you know?! What do you know?! Did they get hurt?!" Ulrich's honestly surprised that Jeremie is this calm.

"The twins just fessed up to it. They said he didn't turn it on again after the jump back." The brunette explains.

"I'll have to check it out later... I'm about to go out to eat with Dimitri and Maya. I'm about to get to Maya's room to get her ready. Maybe I'll try to talk to Dimitri about it." There's a pause. "I have to go now, ok? Maybe try seeing if you can get ahold of Odd. He should know, I mean, he'd remember the jump back in time too." A heavy feeling fills Ulrich's chest at the mention of Odd.

"I doubt he'll answer, but I suppose it's worth a shot. Bye." Ulrich hangs up and dials Odd's number again, it's still in the call log. He puts the phone to his ear, but it goes straight to voicemail again. "Odd, I don't know what happened between us, but you need to stop your sulking and at least listen, ok? XANA might be back and your kids are in the middle of it." He sighs. "Figured you might as well know… Bye." He hangs up, sighing through his nose this time. He still has so many questions that he wishes could be answered already.

The three of the Belpois family sit down in the seats they were given by the host. They decided on pancakes for dinner, at request of their little Maya.

"So, Dimitri, I hear that you and the twins have chosen an interesting extracurricular." Jeremie starts his probing already, but not wanting to let Maya in on it, not that she'd understand much anyway, but there could be others around who might listen in. "I think I was told it involves computers?" Dimitri tenses a bit, fists clenching on his lap, but maintains eye contact with his father.

"Oh yea, it's not really an extracurricular, more of a club we were working on, but we decided it'd be best to not pursue it further, since school is already so stressful." He returns in full. "How did you find out? And what do you know about it?"

"Ulrich told me the twins told him about it. I just wonder why you haven't mentioned it to me before starting it up."

"I would have eventually I think, I might have needed your help, but we put an end to it, so that's that."

"Can I get you three started with drinks?" The waitress asks with her little ticket book in hand, a pen in the other.

"I'll just have a water." Jeremie replies, he turns to his daughter. "What would you like to drink, sweetheart?"

"Apple juice?" Maya asks. "Apple Juice? Apple Juice?" Jeremie places a hand on hers.

"It's ok, sweetie. You can have an apple juice." Jeremie smiles a little sad.

"Yay!" She cheers adorably then giggles. Her green eyes glimmering. "Apple Juice?"

"Yep! You can have Apple juice, right?" He looks to the waitress.

"Of course. I'll bring out some right away." It's obvious she's a little weirded out, but at least she's polite enough not to comment. "And for you?" She gestures to Dimitri.

"Orange juice." She writes his answer down and walks away. Dimitri looks at his little sister. She's coloring on the page she was given. She sets the crayon down and looks at Jeremie.

"Apple juice?" She asks again.

"Yep, the waitress will bring it out soon." He pets her head, smiling softly. She smiles happily, eyes closing in bliss. She loves her head being pet. Dimitri grabs one of the crayons, drawing on his napkin, he's a decent drawer, but doesn't really think he's good at all. He pushes it over to Jeremie, with the words: What is this?

Jeremie writes on it and pushes it back: XANA.

Dimitri looks at him a little confused. Jeremie starts pretending like he's typing, then coughs. Dimitri's eyes widen and nods in understanding. Dimitri then grabs the napkin and draws himself the best he can in his Lyoko outfit and shows it to Jeremie. Immediately tears well up in his eyes and he wraps his arm around him, whispering to him softly,

"We'll talk more later about it later, ok?" Dimitri nods. They look over to Maya, she's fallen asleep. Jeremie takes her hand and shakes her a little. She startles a little, immediately looks up at him.

"Pancakes?" She asks.

"Yep, that's where we're at, sweetheart. We're at the Pancake house."

"Yay!" She giggles.

"Why did you keep it all a secret?" Dimitri asks. They're walking back to his dorm after dropping Maya off at her own.

"The same reason you did." Jeremie replies, having a good feeling as to why.

"Fair enough…" He opens his dorm with his key and sits on his bed. Jeremie too steps in, shutting the door behind him. "I really look like my mother…?"

"Yes… She had a remarkably similar outfit before we upgraded them all. Right down to the pointed ears. I think the reason you all had similar characteristics to former Lyoko members outfits is based on your genetics. There's so much that computer can do. It's quite possibly limitless… But also dangerous… All because of XANA."

"Um… When… When I deactivated the tower…? I thought I felt mom's presence…" The air in the room suddenly feels colder in a way. More tight. And Jeremie's face sort of reflected that.

"I see…" Jeremie perks up, getting an idea, but shakes it off, not wanting to put his family in more danger. He gets a call on his cell, he pulls it free from his pocket, pressing the pulsing, green answer button. "Hello?"

"I need you to come to my office." A voice says, it belonging to Sissi. This didn't happen last time…

"Of course. I'll be right there. See you soon." She hangs up. He does as well. "The principal summons me."

"Oh great… What now? Does she need you to fix her computer again, for the…" He pauses to think, but mostly for dramatic effect, "…200th time?"

"With her, who knows. I'll be back." Jeremie turns leaves the room. Dimitri stares at the ground for a moment, then looks up to Shiro's bed, missing his friend as usual. It's in that moment, he gets a call on his phone. He startles a bit, but grabs it from his pocket, answering.

"Hello?"

"I'm sorry, we couldn't keep it a secret. Mom tricked Akira." He hears Shiro explain.

"It's ok. My dad knows that I know, and he explained everything to me. The creature that attacked us is named XANA, and it's a computer virus."

"That's what mom and dad told us too… So we're all on the same page then?"

"Looks like it. Except for Anna and Gio. They don't know yet. Maybe I'll go tell them."

"Um… W-Well actually… Why don't we tell them tomorrow? We meet up for lunch or something and talk about it? Or explain it to Anna and she can tell Gio." The change in Shiro's tone sort of weirds Dimitri out, it's hard to explain, he just has a weird feeling that he can't quite place.

"Ok? Whatever we decide to do I guess."

"Yea…" There's a moment of awkward silence between them, that's not a common thing to happen. Finally, Dimitri pipes up.

"So, what are you guys up to?"

"We're getting ready to watch a movie. We're watching a different one from yesterday, or… today? This whole time travel thing is messing me up…"

"I know what you mean… But at least we don't have to worry about it anymore. It's all over and done with. We can get back to our lives."

"It was fun while it lasted though. I mean, I was a Samurai! That was so cool! I had telepathy and everything too!"

"I know. It was pretty insane and honestly kind of scary, but it was fun. It gave us something new, something different from our day to day lives…" A strange twinge fills both their hearts. A sort of pain, but not entirely painful, just, weird feeling, not easily described.

"Are you sure you don't want to turn it back on…?" Shiro gives voice to what Dimitri was starting to consider, but he knows it's not a good idea.

"No. It's dangerous, we'd be risking our lives for nothing. There's no need to turn that computer back on. We'll figure something else out. Besides, you guys have that band, you need your practice and jam sessions." Dimitri's mind reasons, though his heart wants more of that adventure.

"That's true… Well, I thought I'd call you and warn you that our parents know now. Isn't that lovely…? At least I don't think we're going to be punished, right? It's not like we knew any better."

"Right… I'm gonna check in early, I think. It's been a long day…" Dimitri mumbles the last part, though Shiro still heard him.

"Rest well, buddy!" Shiro sends off.

"Goodnight." They both hang up. Dimitri plops back onto his bed, staring up at the ceiling. Shiro looks to his sister.

"No luck, he's not going for it."

"Damn…" Akira mumbles. "Hmm… What if we turned the computer on anyway?"

"We need Dimitri to work it."

"Oh… right…" She sighs, sitting on her bed. "There's this feeling, I can't describe it. All I know is, I long to go back."

"I know what you mean… And I think Dimitri wants to also, by his voice, I could tell… But he's right, it is dangerous, and we'd needlessly be putting your friends and family, and even the whole world at risk for nothing."

"I know…" She stretches. "Let's head on down for our movie."

Jeremie steps up to Sissi's office door and knocks before entering.

"You needed to speak with me?"

"I need answers…" She stands up. "What did you do as kids?" Jeremie raises an eyebrow.

"What do you mean?"

"I keep seeing these visions… Some weird alien robot thing attacking Yumi and Ulrich… Some weird electric ball jumping out of my closet and attacking me! A crazy rat infestation! I want answers! I know it involves your group!" She places her hands to her eyes. "I don't understand it… I keep seeing such bad things… So please… Tell me the truth for once…"

"I guess there's no harm in it now. It's all over." He moves to sit down. "You may want to sit down for this." She nods and sits, waiting for him to explain. He takes a deep breath in to relax himself. "Before I start, I need you to promise you won't go to any authority, nor will you think I'm crazy." She nods. "Ok… What that was, what was causing all the craziness… It was known as XANA. XANA is a computer virus that is hellbent on destroying the world or at least enslaving everyone in it. The only ones who could stop him were me, Ulrich, Yumi, Odd and Aelita. William tried, but he didn't listen and ended up captured by XANA. I set up a decoy to cover for his absence. That's why it seemed like he was acting weird, remember?"

"Yes! I thought you guys did something to him!" Sissi shouts, feeling things about her past start to make sense.

"We didn't, but XANA did. XANA did most of everything strange you saw at the school and around the world… Even if you don't remember it entirely, but you're having strange visions… You were however the first person to be possessed by XANA ever. Remember that Minidisc you had that was destroyed, you didn't know how that happened to this day, right?" She shakes her head slowly.

"It's all making sense now…" She looks down, but then thinks of something, looking back at him. "Then what was the deal with Aelita? Was she human or not?"

"She was human… She was never a computer program… Long ago, she was virtualized onto Lyoko with her father, but was trapped there until we managed to virtualize her here. That's why we didn't turn off the computer at first, we wanted to save Aelita. We got her out, but couldn't turn the computer off because XANA took memory from her that bound her to him, at first, we thought it was a virus, but no… So, we tried to retrieve the fragment of Aelita's memory but XANA took the keys to Lyoko that lied within her that allowed him the ability to escape the computer. Then shutting it off wouldn't have done anything to help. We had to keep fighting XANA until we finally thought we destroyed him. We were all free from him at last and could live normal lives. I don't know if XANA will come back…"

"This is just… I don't even know…" She runs her hands through her hair. "It's so much…"

"I know… But it is all true." She sighs and looks back up to him to say something, but there's a knock on the door.

"Uh, come in." She shouts a bit. The door opens, William steps into the office.

"Good, you're here." He says, looking directly at Jeremie. "I need to speak with you about that old project of ours."

"About XANA and the supercomputer? Sissi knows already. I just explained it to her." He lets the knob go, stepping further into the office, standing straight.

"Wait, what?!" Bewildered William shouts.

"She was having visions of the past, things she wouldn't have remembered because of the return trips. Like you did, remember?" William stands in shock at Jeremie's explanation. Jeremie turns back to Sissi who watches William, he's in a constable uniform, but without the hat.

"Then what caused the return to the past. I was on my way to the burning school to help look for some kids."

"That was my kid you were looking for… He was on Lyoko. With Shiro, Akira, and Odd's children." Jeremie explains.

"Odd has children?" William asks, because that's the most important thing right now…

"Yes, he has two. One's named Giovanni, he's in the same grade as Hayate. The other is named Anastasia, she's in the same grade as Dimitri."

"And they turned the computer back on? XANA's back!?"

"Dimitri did the return trip. When they returned, he didn't turn the computer back on." The blond explains further. William hums.

"So, what you're saying, another curious Belpois turned the computer on? Do you know if Hayate went in too? Is he ok?!"

"As far as I know, I mean, he should be in his dorm." William nods in understanding.

"And you're sure XANA isn't back?"

"As far as I know, he's not, but I'm going to keep an eye on things, I'll let you know if anything changes, ok?"

"Yea…" William looks down, sighing. "We can't go through this again… What if XANA takes my son from me…?" Jeremie stands up.

"Will, I won't let that happen. I know the pain and fear you feel, believe me. MY son was nowhere to be found during that fire. I thought I was going to lose him, too… I don't plan on losing anybody else, but some things are out of my control. And we don't even know if XANA will return. Just, please don't blame Dimitri if XANA does come back… That's all I ask." William nods again. Jeremie walks toward the door, stopping to talk to William once they're side by side. "And so far, no word from Odd. We still don't know what happened. Not even his kids know why or who we were to him."

"That is rather odd. Pun fully intended." Jeremie playfully glares at him for said pun. William smiles playfully in return. Jeremie turns to Sissi.

"Is that all you need me for." She's spaced out, just staring at the two. She startles, looking at them more clearly.

"Huh? Yes. Sorry… You're free to go."

"Thank you." He subconsciously bows slightly before leaving, a habit he picked up long ago. He walks off back to the dorms.

"I was originally going to have you call Jeremie to your office so I could speak to him." Will explains to Sissi, watching as Jeremie walks away.

"I called him down because I finally wanted an explanation to everything that happened. I keep having these visions. I'll blank out completely and sometimes I just…" She raises her arms as she shrugs, plopping them down at her sides, a loss for words. "It's scary what I see… I mean… When was the last time you saw your father kidnap two of your old classmates over and over in your head…?"

"That happened…?" Will is definitely baffled. Sissi nods, eyes closing.

"That's probably one of the scariest… Seeing my father shoot lightning from his hands at me and Ulrich… Seeing him attack you, grab Yumi and Odd… hearing their screams through the speakers…" She covers her ears, eyes closed tight. "And I almost framed him for trying to explode the school! What if that return trip thing didn't work?! My father could have been suffering from mental illness in a prison psych ward because of it all!" William feels a little awkward, but he steps up to her, hugging her, believing that's the only way to calm her down.

"I'm sorry for all you've had to witness… But nothing happened, your father isn't suffering in a psych ward, he's safe in a nursing home, right?" That's the last he heard about Jean-Pierre Delmas anyway.

"Mhm…" She confirms, though continues crying. "But still… So many bad things could have happened because of all that XANA stuff!"

"But it didn't, Sissi. We're all here now. We're all ok. Don't focus on what could have been, focus on what is now, alright? That's something I've told myself for so many years and it's helped me keep my thoughts in check. You're stronger than you may know. You've always been strong." She looks up at him, tears still in her eyes. William smiles at her softly. "There you go. You're going to be ok." She smiles a little, starts wiping her eyes. He lets her go. "I'll… go ahead and leave now."

"Right um… be safe out there." He nods a bit and turns, walking off, he glances back at her before shutting the door.

HMMMMM what's going on here? 😜

Haven't decided on that yet, but we'll see. If you have any ideas for future chapter events, let me know either from a review or PM me and I'll try to incorporate it into the story.
