Chapter 11
CLACK! CLACK! CLACK! CLACK! THUMP!
"Ow! Either you're improving faster than I anticipated, or I'm getting slow in my old age," Robin said, rubbing his bruised shoulder. For the past month, he had been training Lincoln on how to use a quarterstaff, and the boy was showing promise. Occasionally, they even sparred with wooden swords.
"I still have a hard time believing that you met my ancestors," Lincoln said, leaning on his staff to catch his breath. He wore an orange short-sleeved T-shirt with a hood tucked into relaxed-fit denim jeans, the belt Lucy had given him for his birthday, black combat boots, a black leather vest, and iron-studded black leather greaves on his forearms. His hair had naturally become slightly spikier than he usually had it, without the use of hair products.
"You'd better believe it, because it's the truth," Robin replied. "I think that's enough training for today. Why don't you work on your homework while I cook dinner?"
"Okay." Lincoln went inside Robin's house and placed his staff back in its stand with the rest. He then walked up to the room that had formerly been Luna's, Luna having moved into Robin's room shortly after they became an official couple. Luna and Robin had become loving parental figures for Lincoln, a drastic improvement over Lynn Sr. and Rita. Lincoln finished his homework at the same time that Luna finished hers, and the two joined Robin for dinner.
It was apparent that Robin still kept some aspects of his life in the Medieval ages, as meat of any variety (be it beef, pork, chicken, venison, or fish) was a staple part of his diet. He even had foods that Lincoln never considered trying but had taken a liking to, such as pickled herring, grits, rabbit meat, and boars' heads. A dish that Lincoln was particularly fond of was rabbit stew with potatoes and carrots, which was what they had for dinner that night.
After Lincoln went to bed, Robin and Luna stayed up to watch the news. Lisa had yet to show her face, and Lori had sent out a missing child notice. Luna and Robin looked at each other in worry when the headline popped up on the screen: MASSIVE JAILBREAK IN CENTRAL MICHIGAN. The local reporter Katherine Mulligan was talking about the incident.
"Rita Loud, a woman who, along with her husband, was sentenced to life in prison for felony child abuse, has apparently rallied several dozen prisoners to her cause prior to breaking out. It seems that she blames her children for her arrest and is seeking revenge. It is strongly advised that all citizens of the small town of Royal Woods be on high alert, as this group of escapees has a mob mentality and is extremely dangerous."
"I wonder how they broke out in the first place?" Luna speculated.
"Security reports state that the reinforced concrete-and-steel walls were dissolved completely using a highly corrosive compound the likes of which has chemists baffled. It is unknown how the prisoners managed to get their hands on such a material."
"Lisa," Luna and Robin gasped in unison. Of course, such a massive breakout couldn't possibly happen without outside help.
"What do we do, Rob? If they get ahold of Lincoln, he's doomed! Ditto for anyone else that gets in their way!" Luna fretted.
"Fear not, milady. Here's what we do: we gather our loved ones together, then fortify the house. Nobody leaves the property alone except me. They wouldn't dare attack a master spellcaster like myself directly," said Robin. "For now, let's get some sleep. I'll start the fortifications in the morning."
"Either Lincoln's been rubbing off on you, or you've been rubbing off on him," Luna said with a giggle. She and Robin went to bed soon after.
I admit that this chapter is much shorter than usual, so please don't heckle me any more than some of you already have. I'm doing my best.
