Martin watched as Ruthie was being taken to the ER. Seeing her like that was killing him. Martin thought about all the good times they had together. There was one memory in particular that came to his mind.

Flashback

It was a few weeks after Martin had gotten back from going to see Simon at college. He and Ruthie decided to go to the carnival that was in town.

"Martin I can't wait to get to the fair." Ruthie said with much excitement.

"Yea I can't wait either It's going to be so much fun." Martin was eager to spend time with Ruthie because summer was ending in a matter of weeks and soon school would be starting.

"I love going to carnivals when they are in town! I especially like going on all the rides and playing games." Ruthie enjoyed having fun in the summer. Hanging out with Martin was the best.

Martin thought about how much fun he had that day with. Being there with her was the best day he had ever had.

"Yea going on rides is fun, but I prefer playing games, especially the baseball ones." He laughed. Every time he went to a carnival he always played the tossing games.

"Please for once can we not talk about baseballplease?" Ruthie hated that he always talked about it.

When they arrived at the carnival, the first thing they did was go straight to the ticket booth and get tickets to go on rides.

"So which ride do you want to go on first Ruthie?" Martin asked.

"Ummmhow about we go on the tilter whirl?" Ruthie loved the tilter whirl, it was her favorite ride.

Martin laughed to himself as he remembered the rest of that day with her. He hoped that he would be able to have more days like that with her.

"Can we please play some games now Ruthie? Please?" So far they had been on 5 rides and had not played one game. Martin was getting tired of rides.

"Fine we can go play some games, but then I want to go on more rides before we leave." Ruthie knew she had to be fair and play games. If it wasn't for him she wouldn't even be at the carnival.

"Good! Let's go play the balloon games." Martin loved playing the balloon game. Whenever he was at a carnival he would act like a little kid.

After playing a few rounds of the balloon game Martin had won two teddy bears and a snake. Ruthie on the other hand had won none, she had a bad aim. Frustrated as she was Ruthie kept on trying.

Martin felt bad for her, so he handed her one of his teddy bears. "Here take one of mine."

"No! I want to win something on my own." Ruthie was determined to win one by herself. She didn't want him to feel bad for her.

"PleaseI want you to have one of mine." He was being sincere about it. Martin wasn't trying to pity her he wanted her to have it.

"Thanks Martin." She smiled and took the bear.

"I have an idea. Why don't we go on the ferris wheel? Please Martin can we?" She was pleading with him.

Martin couldn't say no to her. He promised that he would do anything she wanted to do that day and he was going to keep that promise.

"Ok we can go." He smiled.

They got onto the ferris wheel and looked at the view from the top.

"This is amazing isn't it?" Ruthie said as she looked over at Martin who looked kind of pale.

"Is something wrong Martin." She was worried.

"No nothing is wrong. It'sjust I don't like the ferris wheel much." In a plane he was fine but when it came to the ferris wheel he was terrified.

"Oh Martin I feel bad about this." If she had known that he didn't like them, she wouldn't have said anything about going on it.

Martin thought about how freaked he was going on the ferris wheel and laughed. Ruthie felt so guilty about it that she offered to treat him to an ice cream. But he told her no thank you. Martin told her that day was about her, that he was treating her to a day of fun.

"Martin are you sure I can't make it up to you in anyway?" Ruthie felt that she had to make it up to him some way.

"Yea you can." Martin had the perfect idea. "You can take pictures with me in the booth over there."

"Sure! I love taking those pictures; they're so much fun to do." Ruthie thought it be great to have something to remember the day they had.

They walked over to the booth and got in. In the first picture they both gave each other bunny ears. In the second photo Martin stuck his tongue out at the camera and Ruthie started giggling. The rest of the pictures were all goofy ones of them making faces at each other. But the last one was Martin holding Ruthie close and they smiled looking at the camera.

"That was sooooo much fun Martin!" Ruthie said with excitement. That day was the best day she had ever had that summer.

"Here, why don't you keep the pictures." Martin said handing them to her.

"Wait don't you want to keep any?" Ruthie wondered why he didn't want to keep any pictures

"Well I want you to hold onto them because knowing me I might lose them." He knew he would.

"Ok, if you're sure." She laughed looking at the pictures.

With that Martin and Ruthie left because it was getting late and her parents wanted her home early.

"Thanks for the great day Martinit was a blast." Ruthie said as she yawned from her long tiring day.

"It was my pleasure. Besides I like hanging out with my best friend." He looked at her and smiled.

"You're my best friend to Martin." Ruthie pulled him into a hug and went inside.

That day had been the best day they both had ever had. Spending the entire day with her was worth everything. Just seeing her smile and hearing her laughter was enough reward as anything.

Martin wished that he could have more days like that with her. To see her smile and laugh the way she did that day would mean the world to him. Martin quickly snapped out of his thoughts when he saw the doctor coming out.

"I'm so sorry to have to tell you this…it seems Ruthie has slipped into a coma." The doctor said with grief. This was the hard part of his job.

Martin couldn't believe what he was hearing. Ruthie, his best friend, the person he cared about, was in a coma. The words echoed through his head like bells...
