Hawkeye didn't know how Radar managed to swipe a three-day pass from Frank but he was very grateful for the smaller man as he was packing his bag. That little guy could get anyone anything they wanted, it amazed him sometimes.

Chris seemed excited as well but he had a few mixed feelings about leaving the unit, even if it was only for a few days. Henry's death had scared the boy a lot, but Hawkeye was sure that this trip would help with that.

His son had a neatly organized suitcase ready, while Hawkeye just dropped some stuff into his duffel bag.

He got a slightly irritated look from the boy as he threw his Hawaiian shirts unorganized in the bag. It was unbelievable that Chris was so neat with his stuff, but maybe that's because he has so little and wasn't used to having stuff in the first place. Hawkeye chuckled at the child's expression before sticking out his tongue.

Chris got a big smile, the child knew that his dad was just being silly if he did that. It startled him the first time, but after he remembered a bit from his earlier life, he remembered stuff like that as well. And his dad did that quite often.

Chris gave Trapper and Radar a big hug but he still cried a little as they drove off. The drive over there was uneventful, with not many explosives going on in the background. and that was the way Hawkeye wanted it.

They arrived in the very busy and colorful city, Chris seemed almost panicked by that many people, but the lights and colors did their work distracting the child a bit. Hawkeye held him close, of course, but Chris still seemed scared as he took in the sight.

He had made a deal with Chris, the first two whole days they will spend together but on the third day, Hawkeye wanted the night for him alone. Chris understood but didn't like it much. Hawkeye always showed him which room he would want his privacy in, as he always stayed close to the room Chris was staying in.

His dad mostly stayed away for a couple of hours and always came back, but the child disliked being alone in a hotel room. Sometimes he would just sit outside the room his dad was in but made sure not to hear anything, he didn't like those weird sounds.

Getting in and out of his room wasn't a problem and he often went a couple of times a night to sit outside where Hawkeye was, and the other times he watched Korean cartoons or read a little bit.

It was around noon when they arrived at their destination, and Hawkeye carried their bags inside a small local hotel; he rented their room. They only had a room with one big bed available, but that didn't matter much.

After they dropped off their bags, they went to eat lunch. They found a small place, which wasn't that crowded with people. Hawkeye always tried to help Chris with that, the child wasn't used to that many people. And a panic attack was not something the doctor wanted for his son, these days were for RR, not only for him but for Chris also.

He had Chris tell the man in the food stall, himself what he wanted to eat, and the nervous boy did great! He made Hawkeye very proud even if he needed a couple of tries to get it right. Thankfully the man seemed to understand and waited patiently as the boy stammering finished his sentence.

They took their food and found some quiet place to sit outside.

As they were eating Hawkeye taught his son the game of people-watching. Chris was amazed and delighted by that and he happily helped his dad with imagining different life stories about the people they saw. His kid had the most amazing imagination.

They were having a blast and Hawkeye loved seeing his kid so happy and having fun, he wished he could give him that more often. He just hoped this war would end soon. If he got Chris back to the states, he would have a real chance at just being a kid, before he got too old.

After lunch, they started walking around, just looking around the city.

Hawkeye noticed Chris holding him very tight and staying close to his side as they walked on the more busy streets. So Hawkeye tried to avoid the bigger crowds.

They went to the park and Chris seemed delighted with all the green and flowers, as they didn't have that much near the 4077th. Chris was going to be completely shocked if they got back to Maine. Almost everything was green there, and he couldn't wait to show Chris the places he loved as a boy, the lake and the park, or the drive-in movie theater.

They stayed there for over an hour just walking and talking, as Chris ran around to look at every flower with excitement.

As they walked they encountered a couple of playing kids. Hawkeye told the boy he could play with them if he wanted but Chris didn't dare to come close to them. Hawkeye tried to encourage him but he simply refused.

After that, they went to the theater to watch a semi-kid-friendly show, which was the best Hawkeye could do as it was getting late, and most shows contained barely dressed girls. So Hawkeye had to deal with singing girls who were a little more dressed than he would like. They served food and drinks and ate during the show. The food was great, but everything tasted great as if you had been eating army food. Chris really seemed to enjoy it as well, the boy was a pro at eating with chopsticks.

Hawkeye was a bit tipsy as they went back to their hotel, but not too much, he always held up his part of the deal, so he refrained from drinking too much for at least the first two days.

The next morning after breakfast they visited a bathhouse and he and Chris had a blast swimming around in the hot spring water before washing themselves clean from all the army dust and filth.

They had a very sweet-smelling shampoo that Chris really seemed to like.

And even though it was a woman's shampoo, Hawkeye didn't care!

If Chris liked this one, then he would get this one.

Hawkeye thought as he washed Chris' hair until it was completely clean, it never looked cleaner than now.

Normally you would have a Korean woman washing you but Hawkeye sent them away, as Chris didn't like to be touched by strangers, and he didn't need a lady.

After that, they even had a manicure and their hands and nails got treated by a lovely Korean woman. Hawkeye wouldn't do these things normally when he would be alone on RR but he saw Chris look when Klinger sometimes did his nails, so he thought the child wanted to try it. It couldn't hurt if he got a bit more used to things anyway, so why not?

Chris was a bit scared and not that happy with someone wanting to touch him, but he trusted females more than men, so after he saw his dad's nails and hands get cleaned without any pain or scary things, he wanted to try that as well.

Chris was still a bit uneasy about this lady touching him, but he loved how his nails looked, they looked very nice, but they are still a bit boring, as he thought about Klinger's nail polish.

He almost asked his dad if he could get some for his nails. But as he looked next to him he saw his dad was flirting with the girl doing the nails. Chris was already so grateful for the bath and the nails, he shouldn't ask for more, so decided against asking.

Hawkeye even got a massage but Chris didn't want any of that, so he just waited.

They had a great time but they soon left the bathhouse. They walked over to the stores, Hawkeye had a whole list of stuff he needed for the people of the 4077th.

First, they went to a book store and got some comics, which Radar requested.

Chris looked with big eyes as he stepped in. So many books! He got the biggest smile and seemed to completely light up.

They got the comics for Radar, plus one extra, that Chris wanted to give to the clerk as a gift.

Chris got two new comic books as well and a fantasy children's book that he was staring at for several minutes but didn't dare to ask his dad for it. He already got the two new comics, and the nails and he smelled amazing so he couldn't ask for more!

But Hawkeye who was waiting, while he was getting very bored, saw his kid stare.

He told Chris they should be going already, just to see if the child would ask about it. But Chris just sighed a bit sadly and walked away, Hawkeye quickly grabbed the book and saw Chris his face light up when he saw the book being bought.

The child stuttered the question if that was for him, and Hawkeye felt thrilled to let him know it was completely his. Chris almost got tears in his eyes as he over and over again kept thanking his father.

Hawkeye rolled his eyes at the dramatics of his kid but felt immensely happy while Chris hugged the man close.

They visited a clothing store because several people had requested clothes.

Hawkeye also bought some new clothes for Chris as the boy was still growing and would be needing new pants soon, better to buy now than to let his child walk in pants that are too small.

His current pants still fit, but it was getting close to being too small. Not because Chris had grown much but he was a lot less skinny than he was when they found him.

Hawkeye asked Chris to pick out some shirts he liked, he watched the boy's eyes get big as he looked around the store.

Hawkeye got a bit worried about how Chris kept seeing nice things in the girl's section of the store, Klinger was definitely a bad influence on the boy, even though Chris was a bit feminine himself.

He sighed as he had to call Chris back to explain he should look at the boy's section.

Chris looked from the girl's section to the boy's section and seemed a bit disappointed.

He wanted bright colors, and funny stripes or dots, but the boy's section only had boring colors, dark boring brown, yellow, red, and blue. There weren't even shirts with stripes or dots, there weren't even two-colors shirts.

While he saw several colorful things in the girl's section, he didn't want to upset his dad, especially after the man bought so much for him already, at least he could obey.

"You like this one too?" Hawkeye asked, holding up some blue t-shirt. The boy nodded. "Great." He said taking the shirt.

Chris did like that shirt, it was just so boring compared to others. He even saw silk kimono-type shirts in the girl's section, but he would do as his dad wanted, and picked a dark red one as well.

Hawkeye was glad they could move on from this store, he was a bit worried about Chris liking girl clothes but he knows that there are more colorful boy clothes available back in the states, like Hawaiian shirts and stuff with stripes and such, it was probably just because they didn't have a lot of options here, which was because of the war and all.

That night Hawkeye carried a sleeping Chris to bed after an evening of good food, drinks, and singing girls.

He explained earlier to the child that he didn't have schoolwork or a very steady bedtime during RR, because this was just like a vacation, not that Chris knew what a vacation was, but this came pretty close.

It was almost 1 AM, by the time, a slightly intoxicated Hawkeye had carried the boy to their room, thankfully the ladies were very helpful with guiding the man safely upstairs and into the room.

Hawkeye was a bit afraid that Chris would be having nightmares these nights but they didn't happen yet, so Hawkeye's plan to keep the boy so busy during the day that he didn't have time to be thinking about all the bad stuff that happened, must be working.

The next day they had a great breakfast and visited a toy store, as Hawkeye promised the boy a toy a couple of weeks back.

Chris was thrilled of course that he got to pick out his toy. He wanted a new toy. A new one for himself, but the toys here all seemed very expensive. He looked at his dad and the man again told him it was fine and he could pick whatever he wanted, the shopkeeper must've heard him as she got a very big smile.

The grin of his child was way better as he started looking around. There were so many kinds of things to choose from. But he wanted something special.

Hawkeye showed him little cars and trains but of course, Chris didn't like that as he wanted something different, he never cared much for cars or other vehicles.

He carefully looked through all the toys on the shelves of the store. There were many toys but this one caught Chris's attention the most, it was a little very colorful tin bird. The bird sang and moved his wings and head when you wind it.

It was a bit expensive, but Hawkeye did promise the boy so he bought the little very colorful bird.

The rest of the day went very easy as Chris only had his attention on the bird.

Hawkeye was drinking while two girls tended to his cuddle needs, they were sitting in the hotel's entertainment room, where you got served food, and drinks, and you could even order some ladies if you wanted. Which was the doctor's plan for tonight.

Hawkeye and Chris also ate their dinner at the hotel and watched the show they gave. Hawkeye liked the show but Chris was so immersed with his book that he kept reading it, and wasn't paying any attention to the dancing and singing girls.

Around 9 the doctor brought Chris to their room, he rented the room across from the room they were staying in for his privacy, he told Chris he could knock if he had a nightmare or got hurt or scared, but the boy only seemed eager to continue reading.

So Hawkeye told him to behave and gave the child a sloppy kiss on the cheek and left to find those two girls.

Late that night a very drunk and satisfied Hawkeye came into the room at 5 in the morning, not being a tiny bit quiet. Chris was asleep but jumped up at the noise of the door. He relaxed when he saw it was his dad. The boy tried waiting up for him but fell asleep while he was reading his new book.

Hawkeye fell face down on the bed, making Chris bounce a little. The boy quickly got out of bed and with some effort got his dad's shoes off the man, as Hawkeye turned to his side and started snoring.

Chris chuckled and tucked the man in a little before he went to sleep again.

The next morning Hawkeye had some trouble waking up and they needed to get up early to catch their ride back.

So it took way too long for the doctor to get up, and then he still had to pack his stuff.

Chris didn't say anything about Hawkeye still needing to pack, but he gave his dad a slightly irritated look as a still sleepy Hawkeye hastily tried to find his stuff and pack everything.

It took too long and they missed their ride, but not at the fault of Chris who had his stuff packed the day prior.

Because even as Hawkeye was a bit of a slacker and a swine sometimes, Chris was not and kept his stuff neatly packed.

Hawkeye never met a boy so neat, but he did mind, he wouldn't want to change Chris's good behavior, and Chris was always good behaved so far, maybe that would change after he gets older, but now the child was always polite and listened to his dad.

Hawkeye knew he would never have to punish his son if he wouldn't do such dangerous things when he got scared.

Getting back to the 4077th was terrible for Hawkeye who had a very big hangover, and it wasn't at all a smooth ride. On top of that, their jeep broke down and they had to lift a ride on a jeep full of soldiers. He and Chris barely fit in there and Hawkeye had to hold his son tight and slightly away from all the people bumping into them, as the jeep drove over the unsteady road. Chris did great, he only got startled a couple of times but his dad holding him helped a lot.

That jeep didn't drive anywhere near the 4077th, so they stopped and had to get out, but they were getting close now.

Now they were standing in a small local village, Hawkeye bought some food so at least they got breakfast. And then he finally found someone willing to drive them.

But as it was a rickshaw with one man riding it, it took way longer than they planned.

Hawkeye didn't mind that much and was just very grateful it was a quiet ride, so after he and Chris ate a little, he even could sleep a little during the ride.

They arrived at the 4077th and got greeted by laughter, apparently interrupting Frank's morning inspection by arriving by rickshaw was something they found funny.

Hawkeye couldn't care as his head was killing him and he really needed a long shower. Chris got a big smile at the laughing people, he felt like he came home and it was nice being greeted that way. He felt great but tried to be very quiet for his dad, as the man seemed a bit sick.

Frank started yelling about the fact Hawkeye needed to check in with him first after he arrived, Hawkeye looked at the man with half-closed eyes, as his eyes were hurting from the sunlight, and said.

"Honey, I'm home" before he stepped out and paid the man driving them. He gave the man double the price he was asking for because it was hard work, and the saddle looked really uncomfortable.

Hawkeye dropped the bags on the ground and got shocked, slightly

horrible expression from his kid about his suitcase getting dropped on the dirty ground like that.

He shrugged while apologizing, and headed to the showers, ignoring Frank's shouts at him to stop.

Chris didn't know what to do, he didn't want to leave his dad but also wanted his bird.

So he promptly got his bird out of his suitcase because he wanted to play with it but also wanted to show the singing warbler bird to Radar when he had time.

He left his suitcase lying there on the ground even though he didn't like that, to hurry after his dad. He rushed into the showers as Radar blew the bugle dismissing everyone.

Hawkeye felt terrible as he got fully clothed under the cold spray of water. Chris giggled at the sight. Making his dad grin wildly.

"You find this funny, don't you?" Hawkeye said with a smile, as he sprayed cold water at his son who squeaked a little before jumping out of the way.

Hawkeye really wanted to laugh but his head hurt too much to find anything funny at the moment.

Hawkeye grabbed the soap and started washing his body over his clothes.

Chris kept giggling but before Hawkeye could say something about it Radar rushed in. The smaller man seemed very nervous and he instantly walked in and started talking.

"Listen!" the clerk said but got shushed by the doctor, his head hurt and the clerk was way too loud.

"Softly, Radar. Talk in small letters. I have the Mount Rushmore of hangovers." The tired doctor explained.

"Yeah, sir... Uh but.."

Hawkeye didn't let the man finish his sentence as he kept joking about his enormous hangover, while Chris was trying to get Radar's attention as he wanted to show his bird to his friend, the child kept waving his bird in the man's face.

"We couldn't reach you in Tokyo, we tried for 24 hours" The clerk managed to say as he pushed the bird away from his face.

Hawkeye did his best to make sure they didn't. He didn't want to be contacted during his RR, so he arranged a hotel that wasn't widely known.

Radar again explained that they couldn't reach him and he tried!

"What did you need me for? You had Burns and Trapper!" Hawkeye said while he was still soaping his clothes.

"He's gone! He got his orders. He's been shipped stateside." The little bird in front of Radar's face slowly went back down as Radar saw Chris looking devastated. The now slightly pale boy looked at him with big blue eyes.

Hawkeye didn't get what Radar was saying as quickly as his son. But after Radar explained again that Trapper's gone, it finally sank in. He felt his heart drop to his stomach as he stood there looking at the clerk hoping the man made some sick joke.

But Radar wasn't joking, he would never do that. Those two words were the only thing on his mind.

"Trapper" and "gone"

He turned off the shower and stepped out of the stall.

"Trapper went home?" He heard small sniffles next to him as Chris tried very hard not to cry. Hawkeye didn't even have to think about it as he quickly put an arm around the child, making them both completely soaked.

Hawkeye just couldn't believe it, his best friend for over a year.

Chris lost his battle against crying as his dad hugged him, he sobbed against his dad, not minding the water. He felt terrible, this always seemed to happen! Why did people leave? Was it because they didn't like him, or did they think he was weird? Was their home better than being here with me?

He heard his dad trying to calm him down but it was no use, Chris just couldn't stop his tears! This all felt so unfair.

Radar replied, "Yeah, well, he's on his way."

"When, how?" Hawkeye asked

"He found out a couple of days ago."

"Why didn't you call me!" Hawkeye almost yelled at the clerk, he simply felt hurt and angry at himself when he realized it was his fault that he missed his friend.

"I said we tried!" Radar shouted back, that was what he was trying to explain the whole time already.

Chris slowly stopped crying, it was quicker than usual, which must mean he started to have better control over his emotions, at least that was what Hawkeye hoped.

Hawkeye looked shocked at Radar for a couple of seconds before he said.

"I can't believe it!"

"Neither could he!" Radar then told Hawkeye about Trapper running around naked completely drunk out of his skull.

"How could he leave without saying goodbye?" Hawkeye asked. He was now completely sober and wide awake, even though his headache remained and the intense sad feeling he got, didn't make him feel any better.

Radar explained that Trapper waited as long as he could.

Chris sniffled a little as he looked at his new shiny bird, he didn't feel like playing anymore, Trapper was his friend, and Chris didn't know what to do now. He knew Trapper had to go back to where he lived, and he would find someone else who would play with him, but it just hurt a lot.

Hawkeye asked the clerk if Trapper at least left a note or letter, but there was nothing like that.

"Nothing?"

Radar seemed nervous as he said. "Well, he did say that I should give you something, but, uh..."

"What?..What?..What?..What?"

Hawkeye impatiently said as he got to stand closer to the clerk.

"Ah, gee! I can't!" Radar said, shaking his head.

"What?" Hawkeye persisted.

Radar seemed to collect all his courage as he sighed.

"Okay, but just remember, this was his idea." The clerk quickly put his hand in front of Chris's eyes and promptly kissed Hawkeye on the cheek.

Hawkeye was a bit disappointed and wanted to know how long ago the man left. Radar told him he left camp for just hours before Hawkeye returned.

Hawkeye kissed Radar back on his cheek and rushed out, Chris quickly followed and let the door slam close behind him as he heard Radar make a lot of complaining notices.

Meanwhile, Frank and Margaret are looking forward to the arrival of Trapper's replacement, Captain B.J. Hunnicutt, and are even more eager to train him in their image.

Hawkeye, still wet from his shower, rushed into Henry's old and Frank's new office. Chris trailed behind, he didn't want to leave the man alone, Trapper leaving scared him, and had a constant fearful nagging feeling, he needed to stay close to his dad otherwise that tormenting will become worse and end in a full panic attack.

Frank snapped at the doctor that it was about time he checked in.

"I'm checking out," Hawkeye told him.

Frank of course didn't like that very much and got into a whole story about needing him here.

Hawkeye looked at the man and said they only got two people in post-op, a nurse who was bitten on her nameplate by a sergeant and the sergeant who had a broken jaw.

Frank doesn't listen so Hawkeye demands to leave camp to say his goodbyes to Trapper at Kimpo.

But Frank of course denies this request, as Radar walks in to ask permission to pick up Hunnicutt at Kimpo, which happens to be the same place where Trapper is also departing from.

Hawkeye sarcastically excuses himself from the office and almost runs out the door, he catches up with Radar, just as he is preparing to leave.

"Move over Radar!" Hawkeye said as he grabbed the steering wheel.

"Why?" The startled clerk wanted to know.

"Because you drive like I spit, come on!"

But Radar didn't move as he told the doctor, Hawkeye wasn't supposed to go with him!

Hawkeye kept persisting and already had lifted Chris into the jeep, there would be no possible way for Hawkeye to keep Chris here. If he and Radar got on this road trip, Chris wouldn't have anyone in this unit he was very close to, he liked most people and liked Francis, Klinger, and Kelly as friends, but not enough to stay in camp while Hawkeye and Radar were gone, they are his favorite people.

The very nervous Radar told him that Frank would kill him! Frank's crazy, he even feels his toothbrush to see if it's wet!

It took some persuasion from the doctor, but Radar finally moved aside, but only after Hawkeye reminded the clerk he was the one who let him develop the nurse's chest X-rays and he was the one who stayed with him that night his earthworm farm was wiped out.

Radar had to admit that Hawkeye indeed helps him a lot, and the doctor was his friend, so as long as he didn't get in any trouble he was okay with it. He moved over as Hawkeye quickly got in and took the driver's seat.

The doctor didn't waste any time as he started the jeep and drove away. He needed his goodbye from his friend and he was going to get it.
