Prompt: "how could you do this?" / 2x12 "He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother"

...

Jane stormed into the morgue. "Maura..."

"Second-degree mid-dermal burns from the exploding dye pack." Maura didn't even look up from her work.

"Yeah, that's what you do - You hide behind science." Jane accused. "You knew the FBI was about to arrest Tommy."

Maura turned to Jane to explain. "Check your messages. I called you the second that I could."

"You should have called me before he was arrested!"

"Title 18 forbids me from—"

Jane cut her off, "I don't give a damn about title 18! There are ways to tell me without telling me."

"Really? Well, the justice department could have indicted me for the mere act of disclosing my knowledge of their intent to arrest Tommy. That is 10 years in a federal prison, plus the loss of my medical license."

"You didn't trust me enough to protect you. And you didn't protect me."

"Jane..."

"How could you do this?" Jane's voice had turned from seething with anger to dripping with sorrow. "I thought you loved me."

"I do," Maura replied, reaching for Jane.

"No," Jane jerked away from Maura's advances. "because if you did you would have told me. If you truly thought of my family as your family, you would have told me. But I guess your work is more important to you than I am."

"That's not…"

Again, Maura was interrupted when Frost burst the door.

"Jane, Farrell got to Cavanaugh. I'm sorry. He made me and Korsak the lead on the two homicides."

"You see that, Maura?" Jane pointed towards Frost. "That's what you do when you care about someone. You tell them things."

"Excuse me. I have to go check on something." Maura quickly turned and walked out of the morgue, holding back tears as she went. How could Jane think that she didn't love her? That she wasn't important? Hadn't she done enough to show Jane how much she cared?

"I'm off the case, Frost. My brother is a suspect. And my girlfriend didn't even have the guts to tell me."

This is all Farrell. You know what? She doesn't even -

What the hell went down between you two?

She married the job instead of me.

Seems to be the theme. Choosing the job over people you love.

…..

Solving this case was strenuous, exhausting, and anxiety inducing. Jane was worried about Tommy going down for murder and about losing the love of her life. She didn't want to end up like Frost and Farrell. So after Tommy was release, she decided to let it go.

"Hey," Jane said quietly as she entered Maura's house.

"Hello," Maura replied from the kitchen where she was pouring a generous glass of wine.

Jane walked into the kitchen and tossed her keys on the counter. "Tommy is officially off the hook."

"I'm glad." Maura took a sip of her wine. "I am so sorry."

Jane sighed as she walked over to Maura and placed her hands on her hips. "No, I'm sorry. I never should have expected you to put your job before me."

"I should have told you. You are my family. Tommy is my family. I should have trusted you to protect us."

"Okay, so let's agree to this. Next time one of our family members is about to be arrested, we give each other a heads up."

Maura chuckled. "I can agree to that."

Jane leaned down and placed a gentle kiss on Maura's lips. Everything was going to be just fine.
