Chapter 3: Merc work

V was drawing a few stares from the other diner's other patrons with the amount of food she was putting away but she paid their judgmental looks no mind.

During last night tutoring session, Lancer had gone over of all the ways he knew of acquiring more mana. Having ruled out all 'sinister' methods of accumulating mana, V was left with having to consuming large amount of food frequently, since anything she ate could be converted into magical energy.

Well, that wasn't exactly true. There was another method of acquiring more mana that wasn't malicious, just degrading.

Consuming a person blood or soul isn't the only way to obtain mana. Apparently, it can also be transfer via other bodily fluids, such as saliva. So, by fucking a bunch of people, she could gather a fair amount at a decent pace. As a grown woman, V was no stranger when it came to sex, but dammit! She was a badass merc, not some joytoy.

Still, slowing her recovery simply for the sake of her pride would be stupid. So, for the foreseeable future, V would have to make sure to getting laid regularly. Hopefully Misty would be able come through for her, otherwise V may have to eventually hit up Judy about join the Moxes.

Taking a bite out of her slice of Tofu'd Tuna and Pineapple pizza, V recalled the lengthy discussion she had with Misty this morning. As expected, once she'd had explained her situation, along with a little demonstrate of some Rune magecraft to serve as proof, Misty was only too eager to help. The following two hours had then seen V giving her a rundown on the basic principles of magic before the impromptu lesson short was cut short by a call from Wakako.

Despite the entirely of Waston still being on lockdown, the fixer requested that V come by her parlor at Jig-Jig Street to collect her payment for the Sandra Dorsett gig.

Thus, V was forced to extricate herself from the engaging conversation, but not before Misty extract a promise from her to teach her how use Rune magecraft in her next spare moment, to which she'd agreed to easily enough, glad to be able to give Misty thoughts something else to occupy them rather than letting them solely dwell on Jackie's death.

Escaping the lockdown had been a rather trivial matter for her.

Picking a deserted spot along Watson's waterfront that was relatively close to Westbrook, V was able to cross the river and enter the neighbouring district by freezing the surface of the water there to create her own makeshift bridge.

As for the meeting with Wakako, that had been quite productive. Not only had the elderly woman thrown in a nice bonus on top of the agreed upon reward, V had even been able to secure a follow up gig.

Now that she had some cash to her name, V had decided to grab some lunch and read up on the gig's dete's before heading off.

Apparently, a casino dealer working for the Tyger Claws had managed to skim a small percentage off every win on the casino's machines for the last couple years before finally being caught. Understandably, the Tygers had been pissed with Vortex -the dealer's alias- and went too far when interrogation her, killing the girl before she'd revealed where the stolen money was stored. V's job was to retrieve the hidden credchip from the Tyger Claws' casino at Longshore South.

Seemed simple enough. Between her improved physical attributes and newly acquired magical skills, a basic smash and grab should be more than sufficient to get the job done.

"This should serve as a good test for your new Demi-servant capabilities," Lancer chimed in over the telepathic link that V shared with the Heroic Spirit.

"I'll admit, I'm rather eager to try out my new l abilities," replied V, polishing off the last of her meal and exiting the restaurant.

"Just make sure to acquire some mana before you leave," Lancer reminded her.

Suppressing a sigh of resignation, V headed over to where she'd spotted a joytoy loitering.

~\/~

As the name of her chosen tactic implied, V didn't bother with the subtle approach. She'd strode right up to the front entrance of the underground casino and took out the guards stationed there with her shotgun, the noise of its booming gunshots announcing her presence to everyone inside the illegal gambling den.

In a matter of seconds, all of the patrons had made themselves scarce, leaving V free to deal with the casino's security without having to worry about causing civilian causalities.

As she made her way inside, V was swiftly confronted by a bunch of Tyger Claws and a fierce firefight quickly ensued.

"You're Protection from Arrows skill is fucking nova," exclaimed V, as she worked the slide action of her shotgun.

The Tygers were unleashing a hailstorm of bullets at her, only for them all to be continually deflected by a tempest of invisible force that burst forth from her body.

"You'll need to be wary of grenades though," warned Lancer. "While the grenade itself will be deflected, the skill can't do anything about explosions."

"Good to know. And speaking of grenades."

With her spare hand, V reached into one of her munition pouches and withdrew a small stone. Swiftly drawing rune upon it, she then tossed the stone in the amidst of biggest concentrate of enemies with a flick of her wrist.

There was a brief lull in the shooting as the Tygers momentary paused to stare at the thrown object with visible confusion, no doubt wondering why the intruder had resorted to chucking stones at them during a firefight. They swiftly got their answer when the thing abruptly detonated like a bomb, reducing the lot of them to offal.

The remaining gang members, not wanting to the suffer the same fate as their comrades and seeing that their guns were having zero effect on V, pulled out various melee weapons and rushed her on mass, yelling insults as they bore down on her.

Swiftly storing her shotgun, V manifested Lancer's spear and moved to meet their mad charge head on.

The way Lancer had put it, choosing to engaging a Servant in a close quarter combat was practically suicide, and she was inclined to agree.

As Demi-Servant, not only had V gained cool magical abilities, but all of her physical capabilities had also been vastly improved. Heighten senses, improved perception of time, incredible enhanced reflexes, and a massive boost in strength and speed. All of this meant that the oncoming attackers didn't stand a chance.

As she engaged them, V experience what it must be like to use a Sandevistan. To her perspective, it was as if the world around her had seemingly ground to a halt, her opponents moving so slowly to appear as though they were frozen in time.

Within a blink of eye, it was over, their corpses littering the floor around her.

Seeing that all the Tyger Claws on the ground floor had been dealt with, V sent out a ping to check for any other enemies that may be lurking in the casino, which revealed a group of four waiting in ambushed on the level above.

Rather than going up the staircase, she instead opted to vault straight up onto the second level, landing right beside them. Startled, they tried to bring their weapons to bare on her but were cut down by a single swipe of her spear before they even have a chance to point them in her direction.

With the last of the hostilities now eliminated, V took a moment to survey the carnage she'd left in her wake, impressed with how well this has gone.

When Lancer had given her the detes about his capabilities, she hadn't been sure if the Heroic Spirit was being entirely accurate with his self-assessment. He could have been overselling his combat prowess as a result of his ego, but if anything, this completely one side massacre had showcased that the descriptions he'd given her didn't do them justice. And this was only the bare basics that V was now capable of. She could only imagine what it would be like to tap into the full potential of her Demi-Servant powers. Too bad Lancer had cautioned her against it, warning that the bigger the strain she put on her body the faster it would deteriorate.

Oh well, no sense in standing around daydreaming when there were Eddies to be had, time to secured Vortex's credchip.

It only took about a minute for V to located the sought-after chip in the corner office on this level. She decided to spare the jacked in female Tyger that was in room since the oblivious netrunner posed no threat, choosing instead to simply retrieve her prize from where it had been hooked up on the desk next to her.

With that taken care of, V then set about the tedious task of clearing out the place of anything that was of remote value.

~\/~

"I have received information that Vortex's shard is on its way. You did not disappoint, V. That deserves compensation," said the elderly figure of Wakako, the fixer having Holocalled V once she had deposited the credchip at the nearest Drop Point. "I am closing the contract and transferring your fee."

A pop-up of V's bank balance appeared in her vision, showing that it had just received a transfer of $2720 into her account. Add to that the $1411 she'd gotten from her sold off loot and it was a decent first step in obtaining the funds necessary to purchase the chrome she needed.

"You handled yourself quite well back there," observed Lancer. "An impressive performance for your first outing as a Demi-Servant."

"As a Solo, I'm no stranger when it comes to combat," replied V. "I've seen my fair share of action before you came along."

"So, what's the plan now? Check in with the other Fixers to see if they've got any work?" inquired Lancer.

She shook her head. "No need for that just yet. I've a more simple solution in mind for getting some fast cash."

With a thought, she brought up her system's menu with her augs and accessed its map function. Immediately, a map of Night City in its entirely superimposed itself over her vision. She then set about adjusted its filters until only the GPS coordinates of numerous NCPD Subcontract work were visible on its surface.

A savage grin spread across V's face as she started heading in the direction of the closest NCPD job in her vicinity. "There's plenty of easy money to be had as a badass crime fighter."

~\/~

As her shotgun click empty, the man came dashing out of cover, electrified baton in hand, attempting to reach her before she could reload. He promptly ate a bolt of fire to the face courtesy of the Ansuz rune.

"No, no, no. You can't be dead."

Having just witnessed the grisly demise of his teammate, and realising that being the only member of his squad still alive meant he was to be V's next intended victim, the solo remaining Militech guard panicked.

Yelling incoherently, he opened up on V with his Copperhead assault rifle on full auto.

Letting Lancer's skill handle the projectiles, V strode leisurely toward him while casually loading rounds into her Carnage shotgun.

In seconds, clicking noises could be heard emanating from the man's gun, the terrified guard having spent the entire clip in a desperate bid to stay alive. As he scrambled to load a fresh mag into his gun, V zeroed him with a single blast from her Carnage.

Having neutralise all ongoing threats, she made her way over to where a backpack was laying propped up against a crate, needing to secure the evidence inside to complete the job.

~\/~

As she approached the reported site of the assault in progress, V was confronted by a guy wielding a SMG. With his heavily Cybered-up appearance, V didn't need a scanner to be able to peg him as a member of Maelstrom.

"Fuck off, bitch! Or I'll fucking zero you!," threatened the ugly looking 'Borg, pointing his Pulsar at her.

A few meters behind him, V could see that a trio of his chooms had cornered a young Asian woman against the side of a building. The sole woman in the group, who V believed to be the leader of this band of psychos, was beginning to level a gun at her.

Acting swiftly, V materialised her spear and she brushed aside the asshole in her way with a backhand - his face instantly getting pulped by the force of the blow despite the seemingly causal manner in which it had been delivered. Taking a moment to make sure of her aim, she then hurled spear at the apparent leader.

Rather than being impaled as V expected, the magic spear instead punched clean through her target and embedded itself in the concrete behind them.

Huh. She hadn't meant to throw it that hard. Guess she still need some more time to adjust to having B ranked strength.

And it was due to all these newly improved physical abilities that V had which made her assumed she'd be able to zero the two remaining Maelstrom before they could react to the abrupt loss of their fellow gang member.

Therefore, she was surprised when one of them spun around and beelined straight for her, a machete clenched tightly in his fist.

He must have a Sandevistan installed, she realised. Still, even though she'd been caught off guard, it wasn't nothing she couldn't handle. Especially since she was still faster than him.

Easily sidestepping their wild swing, V stuck a foot out and tripped her attacker, sending him tumbling to the ground.

As he lay sprawled out at her feet, V held out a hand in the direction of her spear and reach out to it with her mind. Obey her mental command, it wrenched itself free of the concrete and zipped towards her, smacking into her outstretched palm with a sound reminiscent of flagpole being struck.

Before the cyberpsycho had a chance to pick themselves up, V drove the spear's head through their back and into the concrete beneath them, pinning them like a bug on a card.

With the sandy wielder now dead, V returned her attention to the last maelstrom member, noting that this one at least was acting according to her expectation as she observing the glacial pace of his movements.

One rune conjured fire blast later and she was receiving the grateful thanks of the would-be victim while also being $3110 Eddie's richer.

~\/~

"Attention all NCPD subcons - suspected organised crime activity reported off Willow Street," announced the female NCPD dispatcher over V's holocall. "APB out on one Shinobu Imai, convicted on multiple counts of human trafficking and forced labor. City officials offering a reward for neutralising Imai's criminal network in the Willow Street area."

A predatory grin spread across V's face. Flatlining a disgusting slaver trader and getting paid for it. Oh, she was going to enjoy this.

It didn't take long for V to find Shinobu little base of operation. He, along with a dozen Tyger Claw goons, had setup shop in a large cornered off courtyard that was situated between two complexes, just off of Silk Road West.

Wasting no time, V jumped lithely down from the street overlooking the place to land right behind the pair of inattentive goons that were supposed to be acting as sentries.

"Sup," she greeted the startled duo nonchalantly, before zeroing both of them with her Carnage.

"Going to make you scream like a little bitch!"

The threat had come from a group of six Tyger Claws that were storming out of the courtyard and heading towards her with murderous intent.

That proved to be a fatal mistake.

Taking advantage of there being many enemies so close together, V lobbed a rune charged stone into their midst, blowing them all to meaty chunks.

Understandingly, the remaining gang members were a lot more cautious after that, all of them taking shelter behind anything that could serve as cover.

Well, all except one.

Some gonk in a Kabuto helmet strode fearlessly toward her, steadily firing away with his shotgun, heedless to the fact that his bullets were having no effect on her thanks to her favourite Personal Skill.

As she zeroed the dumbass with her own shotgun, her heighten senses alerted her to the sound of faint footsteps coming from behind her.

Clever. The guy had actually been acting as a distraction so his choom could circle round and sneak up behind her.

Like a scene straight out of an action holovid, V whirling around and caught the Tyger Claw's Tanto strike with her free hand, it being unharmed from the blow due to the Ehwaz rune that were inscribed on the gloves she wore, which gave them a hardness well in excess of tungsten steel.

The man stared dumbly in disbelief at the sight of her holding the edge of his blade as though it was no sharper than a butter knife.

Activating another of the glove's runes, V's hand became coated in arches of lightning, which then raced down the length of blade in her grip and into its owner.

Her attacker immediately dropped to ground in a sparking and convulsing heap. It only lasted a few seconds before his body went limp, smoke and the smell of burnt flesh raising from it.

Abruptly, a notification appeared in the centre of V's vision.

A self-satisfied smirk crept it way on to V face. Nice try, netrunner, but she had anticipated that someone would try messing with her cyberware.

With the knowledge that she'd only grow more vulnerable to the tactic of being hacked, what with all the chrome she planned to install, she had taken steps to guard against that avenue of attack.

With Lancer's help, the two of them had modify the runic protections the Heroic Spirit typical used. Now, not only did the updated versions defend against physical and magical attacks, but those cyber in nature as well.

Unable to breach her cyber defences and having previously witnessed that bullets and blades were ineffective against her, the enemy netrunner decided to cut and run.

She sprinted out from the pillar she'd been hiding behind and headed for one of the staircases that lead to the buildings above.

She didn't get very far.

With a burst of speed that left the concrete shattered in her wake, she intercepted the woman before she could make it more than a few feet.

Eyes widening at suddenly finding V between her and the exit, the netrunner had enough time to get out an "Oh, God damnit!" before V turned her head into pulp with her Carnage.

With ranged, melee, and cyber-attacks having all fail, the last goon must have decided now was the time to bust out the explosives, which was actually a smart move.

Too bad for him though, that with her enhanced perception of time and reflexes, it was quite easy for her to shot the grenade out of the air with a bolt of fire the second he tossed it. What was even more unfortunate for him was he still in the grenade's effective range when the fiery projectile detonated it prematurely, the combined explosion of the two reducing the him to charred body parts.

With all of the goons now dead, that just left Shinobu Imai to care of.

Instead of fighting alongside his subordinates, the cowardly piece of shit had chosen to holdup inside the spacious area underneath the balcony of one of the neighbouring buildings.

"Really?" muttered V incredulously, eyeing the shut security gate barring the entrance with a raised eyebrow. Did he actually believe this would be enough to keep her at bay?

With a spinning back kick, V knocked the gate clean off its hinges and sent it hurtling across into the back wall with a deafening crash.

The decor inside the space was like that of a man cave. A few couches, a table laden with various drugs and alcohol, a pool table and arcade machine in the corners, and some portable speakers through which a radio's music was playing.

However, any chilled and relaxed feeling the place might have had was ruined by the fact the couches had been arranged around two cages that hung suspended from the ceiling, a dead body occupying each of them.

While she was willing to admit that she could be a tad callous when it came to other people's lives, but that was by necessity. She wouldn't have lasted long in her chosen profession if she had been reluctant to end the lives of others.

But whether she was morally a good person or not, at least she'd never treated another human being as though they were a mere object. To used someone and then discarded them when they became too inconvenient, that was a whole 'nother level of callous.

The fact they'd treated people like that just for their own twisted idea of entertainment cause a wave of disgust and anger to shot through her and she gave the man responsible a glare that promised a painful death.

Unnerved by both the angry stare of her red eyes and the bloodlust emanating from her, the human trafficker hastily started to backpedalled away from V.

"Back off, you fucking psychotic joytoy," he yelled, firing his gun wildly at V in a futile attempt at keeping her at bay.

"Aw, what's the matter?" asked V, feigned concern in her voice as she advanced on him, unimpeded by the stream of deadly projectiles being shot at her. "Is the big hardcore criminal afraid of me?"

Upon seeing V remaining unharmed regardless of how many bullets he shot her with, Shinobu must have decided that being in a shootout with an opponent who was apparently bulletproof while he wasn't was suicide, and that the smart move would be instead to delta the fuck out of there.

Activating his Sandevistan, Shinobu darted off to the side, heading for the fenced off side exit of his man cave.

V didn't bother chasing after him. If he thought that his Sandevistan would allow him to escape, then he was dead wrong.

After her pervious encounter with a Sandy user, she'd come up with an easier method of dealing with them rather than having to kill them in CQC every time.

Knowing that Shinobu had one thanks to her scan, she figured he'd use it at some point, giving her the perfect opportunity to test her new method once he did so.

Pointing a gloved hand at Shinobu retreating form, V channeled mana into the same rune she'd used earlier. However, rather than coating her hand in lightning this time, it instead coalesced into a ball in her open palm, before lancing out.

While a Sandevistan could make a person fast enough to dodge bullets, it sure as shit didn't make them faster than lightning. The bolt streaked crossed the distance in an instant and struck the fleeing criminal in the back with a sizzling crack, just as he'd been vaulting over the fence with his charge jump.

As the charred remains of Shinobu came crashing back down, V couldn't help the grin that tugged at her lip.

Being able to literally smite anyone who pissed her off was so fucking preem.

~\/~

Waving off the thanks of the guy who'd she'd just rescued from a Tyger Claws shakedown, V left the side alley and stepped back out into the busy thoroughfare of Broad Street.

That had been the last NCPD contract in her general vicinity, or it was at least for the moment. Despite having spent the last few hours thinning the population of the local criminals, V was certain that it wouldn't take long for the amount of crime in the area to return to its previous level.

It was a rather depressing aspect of Night City but in V's case it was also a beneficial one. With the average criminal now barely posing a threat to her, the never-ending tide of criminal activity had been reduced to little more a steady source of easy eddies that she could exploit for the foreseeable future.

And with a single afternoon worth of work seeing her make just a little over $18000, it didn't get much easier.

Another contract or two and she'll have enough to replace an aug of hers with one of higher quality. Or perhaps she should pay off her debt to Vik first.

V found herself having to resist sudden urge to faced palmed at her own forgetfulness, as thinking about the money she owed Vik served to jog her memory.

With all the crazy that had happened to her in the last 24 hours, she'd nearly forgotten that a certain joytoy also owed her a substantial amount of money.

After all, regardless how much of a shitshow the heist had been, V had managed to klep the relic in the end. True, she couldn't exactly give Evelyn the relic at the moment, but V figured the two of them could work something out.

Activating her holo, V tried giving Evelyn a call but was soon forced to hang up after not getting a response.

Obviously, the woman was trying to lay low to avoid any fallout from the heist.

Ordinarily, V would do the same, but Arasaka could send a legion of corporate assassins after her and they won't stand a chance. With her Demi-Servant powers, she was capable of taking on literally army solo and win.

Guess her next step should be to try Evelyn's friend, Judy. The Moxes' resident BD technician would be the person most likely to know how to get in contact with her.

This time V had better luck, as Judy answering the holo after only a few rings.

"V...? That you?" asked the multi-coloured haired woman, sounding surprised. "Sheesh, thought you were…gone."

"You're not alone in thinking me dead. That fat-ass, Dex, certainly though it was game over for me, too. Man, was he surprised when his lead didn't take."

"Oookay…?" said Judy in a confused tone.

"Err…Never mind. Listen, have you seen Evelyn? Need to talk to her."

Judy's voice change from one of cold indifference to that of hostility. "Why? So, you can make her your scapegoat for your trainwreck of a heist?" she asked venomously. "I know how you fucked up. Got all your choombas killed, like a real pro."

V felt the veins along her neck and temples bulge as a surge white-hot of anger filled her.

Jackie's death was still very much raw a thing, a profound loss that V hadn't had the chance to properly terms with yet.

And here she was, brazenly pouring salt into the still fresh wound.

V took in a deep calming breath, doing her best to suppress anger. She needed Judy's help, and that wouldn't happen if she gave in to her violent impulse to head over to Lizzie's and beat the ever-living shit out of the skinny little bitch.

"You weren't there," V pointed out, doing her best to keep her voice calm and even. "So don't go assuming shit when you don't know jack."

"What's there to know? Kind of obvious you fucked up, seeing as everyone on your crew 'sides you ended up a corpse." retorted Judy.

Once again V found herself having to rein in her temper. "Fine, believe what you want. Just tell me where she is," demanded V, an edge of frustration creeping into her voice. "It's important that I find Evelyn."

"Best start lookin', then. G'luck," she wished V sarcastically.

"V," piped up Lancer over their mental link. "You needn't bother with trying to persuade her. If she doesn't want help, then let's just go talk to this Evelyn in person. I've a method capable of her tracking down, regardless of how well she's hidden herself."

"And you didn't think to mention this soon, why?"

V received the mental equivalent of a shrug in response. She certainly hadn't expected to receive such frosty treatment from the Moxes.

"Because earlier it seemed that simply calling her was the more sensible option rather than searching the whole city for her. But now it appears that you don't have much of a choice."

V grumbled internally but couldn't fault his logic. She certainly hadn't expected to receive such frosty treatment from the Techie.

Aloud to Judy, V said, "Turns out I don't need your help after all. So as much as I've enjoyed our little chat, 'fraid I'm gonna have to delta. There's a certain client of mine that I need to pay a visit," and cut the link before she had a chance to reply.

Feeling satisfied at having gotten the last word, V returned to her conversation with Lancer.

"This tracking method of yours, it involves more of your Runecraft, I take it?"

"It does." he confirmed. "Simply apply the Berkano rune onto any stone. Once it's supplied with mana, the stone will then seek out your intended target."

"Then the sooner I take care of this the better," said V, fishing a stone out from a munitions pouch. " 'Cause I don't believe for a second that a mere joytoy, no matter how clever she thinks she is, is going to evade Arasaka for long. Best get to her first if I want any chance of seeing those eddies she'd promised."

Placing the stone down on the street, V drew the Berkano rune on its surface and watched with some amusement as it shot off like a bloodhound that caught a scent. It sped through the busy foot traffic, causing startled pedestrians to hop aside at its passage.

With a chuckle, V took off after it.

He is able reads the course of the projectile attack by using the sound of cutting air and the enemy's murderous intent. You can blame God of War Ragnarok for this chapter being a bit late this month, needed to100% it before the internet could spoil anything for me. Anyway, I'm not good with writing action scenes but hopefully you all enjoyed V trying out her new Demi-Servant powers.

RESPONSES:

Kai Tomohiro-

I'm not opposed to the concept but I feel as though Shirou Emiya get too much focus as it is when there are ton of other great characters who deserve a chance to shine. But if do make an omake about him in the future, I would go with EMIYA (Alter), as I feel that he better suit the setting of the crapsack world that is cyberpunk 2077 (plus his guns are badass). With no moral issues holding him back, he'd probably be able to wipe out all the gangs and the corrupt corpos in Night City in about a year.
