Fantaji Sentai Questinger
Roll 6: A Swordsman's Pride
Late at night in Yukishi Souji's garage…
Yukishi was in full kendo gear, clutching a practice sword and slashing at a practice dummy. He grit his teeth as he heard Igritorn's laughing in his head. A slash and another as the voice repeated in his head, "I will show you a true swordsman's power!" The strikes grew faster as he remembered the beating he'd taken, "Hahaha! You weakling, thought you could defeat me."
Scowling he struck the dummy harder causing it to begin moving back into the wall. He had failed, he was supposed to protect that village, those people and the world of Kataryuko. He had sworn to Maki that her village wouldn't fall. He'd been cocky and overconfident and now he'd been shown how weak he truly was. The worst part? Maki didn't blame him, sure Valanthe called him an idiot, Remlin lectured but no one actually blamed him.
IT WAS HIS FAULT that they had failed to save Myrefall. He let out one last strike, causing the dummy to fall over and nearly break. He threw the sword across the garage and let out an enraged scream, he needed to get stronger. But he couldn't do that learning from a wizard like Remlin... No, he needed a sword master, and he knew Remlin could certainly provide him with one.
0000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000
The next day the D&D club had gathered for a session during lunch at Grant's insistence, he wanted to test the two new members but Remlin hadn't allowed them to play so it had resulted in a more normal session. Megumi looked confused at the whole thing while Maki simply watched amused, wondering what Grant would pull on the three. Grant smiled as he looked over his notes, "Ok so, you've been given the task to wipe out the evil king and save the kingdom, together you should be able to defeat him, but you have to stay together and it's imperative that you go fight him as soon as possible no messing around, so what do you do?"
Yuto shrugged, "I guess let's go defeat the evil king then." Valanthe nodded clearly bored of the session, "Let's just go kill him so we can end this session." Yukishi glared at Grant and shook his head, "I don't want to go yet, I think my character needs to get stronger before I tackle any big boss level monsters!" Valanthe narrowed her eyes at him, "You idiot didn't you just hear him? We don't have time to mess around with stuff like that, he said we'd be fine as long as we stick in a group so let's just go."
Yukishi frowned, "And when have we ever trusted what the DM says? Yuto told me the first rule of D&D is the DM could be tricking you into a trap." Yuto sighed, "Yukishi, I'm with Valanthe on this one, let's just go defeat the evil king then you can go train and get your character stronger." Yukishi shook his head, "No, I think it's better if I go now, I'm of no use as I am right now." Valanthe slammed her hand down on the table now growing annoyed, "Listen, you either come do this with us or you leave the party! Your choice!"
Yukishi nodded at her, "Guess I'm leaving the party then." Megumi, still confused, raised her hand, "Uh, Remlin... Question, can Yukishi actually do that?" Remlin nodded, "Of course, in Dungeon and Dragons your party doesn't always need to stay together, but do remember there's always consequences to your actions in this game whether good or bad." Valanthe continued to glare at Yukishi, "Alright Grant, please tell us what happens because of the idiot's decision." Grant smiled almost sinisterly at her question, "Ok well, Yukishi goes off in search of a trainer who will help him get stronger, while that happens, Valanthe and Yuto, you two go to fight the evil king and because you don't have Yukishi, you end up being killed easily. Yukishi, you arrive to see your party members dead bodies, and you fall into despair knowing this was your fault."
No one said anything when Yukishi looked at the floor, why did his decisions continue to hurt everyone? He just wanted to get stronger so this wouldn't happen. The silence was broken by the bell ringing, bringing everyone back to reality. Remlin clapped as everyone began to get up, "Ok, that's it for today! There won't be a meeting after school today as I have papers to grade, so have a great rest of the day."
Grant smirked at Yukishi as he gathered his stuff, "Remember Yukishi, strength is meaningless if you don't have any allies left after you abandon them to get killed." Yukishi said nothing as everyone exited the room, choosing not to acknowledge him. He needed that sword master and he'd get it if it was the last thing he did.
0000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000
Remlin quietly hummed to himself as he graded papers, as much as he hated canceling a club meeting he felt it necessary. With all the things happening recently and the prospect of two new Questingers, he'd fallen behind on his teaching duties and needed to catch up. That was until he heard the door open, but he knew this visit was coming eventually, "Yukishi, I would've figured you'd have gone home by now, what can I do for you?" Yukishi walked over to the desk and slammed his hands down on it, "I lost Remlin, I lost big time last time I was in Kataryuko and I can't let that happen again."
Remlin frowned and put down his pen, "Everyone is defeated sometimes Yukishi, you'd never really encountered another swordsmen before, certainly not a general of Sebion and that's my fault for not preparing you for it." Yukishi frowned, "I don't think you can properly prepare me for it." Remlin raised an eyebrow, "Oh, and what does that mean?" Yukishi took a step back, noticing the ice in Remlin's voice, "Look, Remlin... you're a great teacher and a really powerful wizard, but that's the thing, you're a wizard and if I want to get stronger I need a sword master not a master wizard."
Remlin closed his and internally let out a sigh, "I knew this was coming after your defeat to Igritorn." Yukishi looked at the old wizard, "And?" Remlin allowed a ghost of a smile to appear on his face, "And your logic is rather sound and although I'm reluctant to send you out and bring us down to 2, I know that you won't give up on this with or without my blessing." Yukishi nodded at him, "So?" Remlin withdrew a piece of paper from his desk and handed it to him, "I have an old friend, Master Ken who's the greatest swordsman I know, I'll teleport you to near his location, but it's up to you to find him. I warn you though he might not be open to taking students."
Yukishi smiled, "Well he's never met me before." Remlin chuckled and his hand began to glow blue, "I wish you luck, Yukishi Souji." Yukishi began to be teleported away as a frown appeared on Remlin's face, "And let us hope that you return before Sebion makes it's next move." Remlin went back to his paperwork before nearly jumping in his seat, Yukishi was going to be gone for at least a day, he needed to tell the boy's parents something.
0000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000
One day later within the swamps of Kataryuko…..
Yukishi sighed to himself as he continued to trudge through all the mud and water of the swamp. It had been a day since he'd been sent by Remlin to find this Master Ken guy and he was honestly having no luck. Remlin had given him a map and it should be easy to find this guy, but then again he was never the best with directions, or map reading. He heard his stomach growl and he cursed himself for not bringing any food with him as he looked up into the sky and yelled "I'M SO LOST!" He heard some birds fly up from the trees, clearly startled by his yelling and frowned, "There goes my chance at some kind of food."
As he walked on, thinking of the shower he'd take when he got home he began to wear the sound of wet footsteps behind him. He gripped his QuestinDice and spun around to see a group of rather angry and hungry looking beasts holding swords. They unsheathed swords strapped to their sides and pointed them at him as he chuckled nervously, "Hello boys, any chance you can tell me where a certain Master Ken is?" He answered with a growl causing him to shake his head in disappointment, "No, ok guess we're fighting then." He brought up his QuestinChanger ready for battle, "QUESTINCHANGER"
He threw up his dice and caught it before inserting it into his Changer, "FIGHTER" The familiar standby music began to play as Yukishi brought the Changer up and hit the button, "QUESTINCHANGE" He was covered in red light before the Changer announced, "D20" The monsters readied their weapons as the Changer further announced "Dive In! Fight for Glory!(Questinranger!) Fighter Classssss!"
QuestinRed emerged with GearSword already in hand as he pointed it at them, "I could really use a win after this crappy week I've had so let's go!" He charged at them and clashed swords with the one in the front, they were strong and he felt himself pushed back slightly as he aimed for the torso, hoping to slash it's chest and send it back. He was met by another sword however as he remembered the monster had other friends and soon the battle devolved into QuestinRed struggling to block the rest of the monster's attacks and trying to get an attack where he could.
Soon it wasn't enough as one managed to land a hit on him and he was knocked back into the muddy water. He was cursing himself, first he couldn't beat the overgrown lizard, now he was losing to a bunch of swamp monsters? How weak could he possibly be? He braced himself for the end as one approached him, aiming to stab him while he was down. Closing his eyes to prepare for the finishing blow it never came however as he found a sleek blade defending him. He looked up to see a man with brown graying hair and a long brown beard dressed in robes effortlessly catching the sword.
The man said nothing as he brought his blade up and repelled the monster back, the man walked forward and merely got into a fighting position waiting for the monsters to strike. The first monster charged and in an effortless move the man stepped to the side, using the monster's momentum to trip it up before delivering a calculated blow to it's neck, killing it in seconds. QuestinRed watched in awe as the older man repeated this process, using the monster's own moves against them and killing them with precise and calculated blows. As all of the swamp monster's lay dead the man sheathed his sword as QuestinRed glowed and reverted back to Yukishi. Yukishi stared at the man in wonder, "Hey, uh, crazy question but are you Master Ken?" The man looked at Yukishi with a raised eyebrow, "I am, why do you ask young swordsmen?"
Yukishi pumped his fist in victory before settling down at seeing the master looking at him weirdly, "Uh, right... My name is Yukishi Souji and I was sent here by Remlin, you see I'm QuestinRed and I really need a sword master to get stronger so I was sent to you." Master Ken turned around and began to walk away, "No." Yukishi began to walk after him confused, "No? What do you mean no? Remlin said you'd train me." Ken glared at him, "Is that really what Remlin said?" Yukishi frowned, "Well, he said you might not be open to taking students, but come on sir, this is the fate of Kataryuko here!" They began to approach a hut with a garden and well outside as Master Ken looked at him again, "I don't take on students, now go home and give Remlin my regards."
Yukishi frowned again, "Please sir, I need to get stronger and you're the only one who can help him." Master Ken approached the door and opened it before turning to Yukishi, "Even if you are a Questinger, even if you were sent by Remlin and even if it is the fate of the world we're talking about, I DO NOT TAKE STUDENTS!" With that. Yukishi had the door slammed in his face as he narrowed his eyes at the door, "Fine! Be that way, stubborn old man." He sighed and knelt down against the hut, "I'm not leaving, you hear me old man, I'm not leaving until you train me in the way you fight." Yukishi didn't care how long it took, he was going to be trained by this old man one way or another.
0000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000
It had been two days since Yukishi had left and the D&D club had been continuing on as if nothing was wrong. When questioned where he had gone by Grant, Remlin merely commented he had things he needed to sort out and was gone. Of course everyone else knew where he had gone, but Remlin insisted that they weren't ready to bring Grant in on the secret yet so they played dumb when he asked questions and boy did he ask questions. Remlin had a bad feeling about Grant, he wasn't sure what it was since he seemed like a genuine and kind boy. But the feeling he gave off, when he asked questions or DM'd a session, alarmed him and reminded him of an old friend of his, someone who now aimed to rule the entire world of Kataryuko.
Of course he didn't share it with the others, Valanthe already didn't like the boy so if he said anything she'd probably put a dagger to his throat. Valanthe may not have acted like it but Remlin knew she cared about him and the rest of the club and saw them as family, if she saw someone threatening that she may have done something regrettable. He gathered up some papers and sighed, hoping that Yukishi was having some kind of luck with Master Ken. Lost in his own thoughts he heard someone clear their throat, he put down the papers and smiled, "Hello Valanthe, didn't you say you were going to visit Miki?"
Valanthe nodded, "I just had a question before I left." Remlin nodded, "Of course what can I help you with?" Valanthe crossed her arms and frowned, "It's been two days Father, what do we do if he doesn't come back soon?" Remlin smiled, "Who doesn't come back soon?" Valanthe glared at him, "The idiot, he's been gone two days and what do we do if he doesn't come back at all." Remlin chuckled, "Honestly Valanthe, I wish you'd just address him by his name, you can even call him by his last name, he's surely earned that much respect."
Valanthe rolled her eyes, "This isn't a joke, father, we're down a person without him and as much as I hate to admit it we do need him to fight against Sebion, I've started to notice that everytime we play a session with Grant, his stories and events seem to come true for us in Kataryuko and last time he said Yukishi left to go train leaving Yuto and I to die." Remlin nodded and his smile disappeared, "I see you've noticed that too. I do find it alarming, but I don't think Grant does it on purpose, if anything he may have a hidden seer ability or perhaps unknowingly can influence the world within the book."
Valanthe frowned, "So, it's nothing to worry about then?" Remlin nodded slowly, "I'm watching him, so for now just don't draw attention to it, if it's something more sinister than that I'll be sure to let you know." Valanthe nodded, "So about the idiot being gone then?" Remlin frowned and opened his desk drawer and removed two items, "About that, I've realized with this event that one of you may eventually want to go off on your own to train, since as Yukishi so eloquently pointed out, I am only a wizard and cannot train you and him correctly." Valanthe smiled slightly amused, "You're really hurt that he pointed that out to you aren't you?"
Remlin shook his head, "While he may be right it doesn't mean my feelings aren't hurt, but because I've decided that we can't rely on 3 anymore it's why I went and retrieved these recently." He opened his hand, revealing a green and pink QuestinDice to Valanthe who reacted in shock, "Remlin those are?" Remlin nodded, "Yes I think it's indeed time to recruit the final two heroes into our party."
Valanthe glanced at the dice in his hand, "The question is do you have two people who can use them?" Remlin frowned, "I do have my eyes on two candidates but I suppose we'll see what fate decides, now stop worrying about it and go meet with Miki, let this old wizard figure things out." Valanthe nodded and exited the classroom, leaving Remlin to gaze at the dice, hoping that his hunch was correct and they'd soon have two new Questinger's.
0000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000
It was dark and footsteps could be heard as Grant Masters entered into the grand hall where the generals of Sebion gathered, Malin following loyally behind him, her hips swaying as she followed. Vrefaris sat in his chair in a bored pose, smiling as he saw Grant approach, "Well if it isn't young Masters, what can I do for you today?" Grant smiled, Vrefaris had been in a good mood since the Questinger's had lost the previous encounter, "I think it's time for my final plan to destroy two of the Questingers..."
Vrefaris raised an eyebrow beneath his hood, "Why only two? Shouldn't you be destroying all three?" Igritorn who'd been present in the room began to laugh, "There's no need to, I crushed QuestinRed's spirit and he will be of no threat to us in the future." Vrefaris held up a had to silence the dragonborn, "Do not be so sure of that Igritorn, I'm sure their mentor Remlin has something planned to reignite his spirit." Grant shook his head, "Seemingly not, QuestinRed has seemingly quit being a Questinger and Remlin seems content to not do anything about it."
Vrefaris nodded with delight, "Excellent, then go through with your plan to destroy the last two, especially before Remlin attempts to recruit green and pink, be warned though boy my good mood will vanish if you fail." Grant nodded and bowed before him, "Of course, Lord Vrefaris. Unlike your generals, I will not fail you." With confidence he began to walk away from an amused Vrefaris and annoyed Igritorn.
Vrefaris held out a hand for Malin to stay for a moment, "Oh Malin, if the boy actually pulls this off then I may finally let you sink your teeth into him." Malin smiled in excitement and bowed before her master and walked out behind Grant. Vrefaris smiled beneath his hood, everything would soon end and Remlin would have lost their little war that had been going on for so long.
0000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000
Master Ken grunted in annoyance, for three days that damn Questinger had been outside his home refusing to leave. First he just sat there quietly, then he let the young man have some food since he didn't want him to starve. This seemed to have been the wrong move as the annoying brat was now filled with energy and he had now begun training outside. Deciding he was finally going to make him leave he opened the door to his home to see what all the commotion was, however the boy didn't even notice him come out as he was too busy with his sword out, cutting the air.
Noticing his stance the master laughed to himself, the boy was trying to replicate his fighting style and while he was impressed that he managed to nearly do so just from seeing a few moves, it wasn't perfect. Master Ken walked out and watched Yukishi swing a few times, "Why won't you leave QuestinRed? I told you I don't take students." Yukishi swiped through the air again and turned to face the master, "I need to get stronger, so I can protect Kataryuko and its people, I can't do that if I lose a fight to a brute like Igritorn." Master Ken nodded, finally understanding his attitude, "Ah so that's why you sought me out, your pride as a swordsman was taken from you so now you want to reclaim it."
Yukishi frowned but nodded, "Maybe my pride was stolen from me, but that doesn't change the fact that I want to protect this world and its people, I got cocky, sword fighting has always come easy to me, ever since I took up kendo when I was a kid. So to finally lose a fight, it hurt, it cut me worse then any sword could as I realized simple sword strikes can't get me by in every fight. But I have to know Master Ken, why do you keep refusing to teach me?"
He swung his sword one last time, letting it land right in front of Master Ken who didn't flinch as he smiled, slightly impressed by the boys honesty, "Resolve my boy, every student I've ever taken has lacked the resolve to truly train with me and couldn't be honest with themselves about what they wanted in life. But you, you've impressed me, admitting your stolen pride and your cockiness, it reminds me of myself before I had a teacher."
Yukishi smiled, "Does that mean you'll train me?" Master Ken swatted away the large GearSword and nodded, "If you really think you can see through to the end of my training then I suppose I can gather the resolve to train one student, especially since he comes so highly recommended from Remlin." Yukishi smiled and nearly jumped for joy, "Yes! Thank you Master Ken, you won't regret this." Master Ken smiled and touched a bracelet on his hand, causing a blue portal to open in front of them, "You best not make me, come through this portal will be a place perfect for training." Yukishi nodded and followed the old master into the portal, eager to begin training.
0000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000
The two emerged in a seemingly empty void, continuing on endlessly and nothing being seen anywhere. Yukishi looked on in amazement, "Woah! What is this place?" Master Ken removed his sword from his side and chuckled in amusement, "This is a pocket dimension Remlin gave me access to, time doesn't flow here and you can train endlessly without aging, perfect for training." He held up his sword and signaled Yukishi to do the same, "Now come, the best way to train is to spar."
Yukishi nodded and charged at the Master, being blocked several times as he began to swing wildly at him. The Master eventually stepped to the side and swept his legs, knocking him down, "You aren't bad, your technique is lacking though. You're fighting the way you think a fighter should, swinging your sword without purpose not the way you learned to fight. If you swing a sword impulsively then you'll lose a battle, you must recognize your strengths and your opponents weaknesses, using both in your strikes to defeat your enemy."
Yukishi nodded and got back up, that was it, he hadn't been using the kendo style he had known for so many years, thinking he had to fight a certain way and not his own way. He clutched his sword with two hands and got into a kendo pose, "I'm not done yet old man, just you wait I'll knock you down." Master Ken smiled, "Hmmm I see you're finally showing me your true personality as a swordsman, come then QuestinRed, there's much more training to be done." Yukishi nodded and walked forward, preparing to swing, ready to see the training through to the end.
0000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000
It was after school and the D&D club, minus Yukishi and Grant, had gathered for the day. Remlin was sitting at his desk simply observing while Yuto attempted to teach Megumi about D&D, "Ok so here's a class that I think you'd like, the bard." Megumi looked at him confused, "What does the bard do?" Yuto smiled at her, "Bard's are musicians who use their music to either buff their allies or cause status ailments to foes and usually hang back in battle." Megumi nodded, "So they use their music to help their friends?"
Yuto nodded, causing Megumi to smile, "That's awesome, I wanna play one of those!" She turned to Maki who was simply sitting there quietly, "What class are you gonna play Maki?" Maki turned to the excited idol and rolled her eyes, "I told you already, I am a ranger, I don't play any of these classes of yours." Megumi nodded, "Right sorry, can you tell me more about being a ranger?" Remlin frowned as the two began to talk, "As much as I hate to break up these fun times, Yuto and Valanthe there appears to be trouble in Kataryuko." Valanthe frowned, "Are you sure you want to send us in with just the two of us?" Remlin slowly nodded, "Unfortunately this seems to be too big to just ignore." Maki jumped up and approached his desk, "Sir Remlin! Send me in as well, allow me to help them."
Remlin shook his head, "We've spoken about this Maki, you can't help them in your current state." Maki narrowed her eyes at him, "Then make me a Questinger!" Remlin chuckled softly, "Make you a Questinger? I cannot just make you one, you have to be chosen and as of right now we only have three." Valanthe put a hand on her shoulder, "We can handle this on our own, you won't be needed anyway." Maki shook her hand off of her shoulder but said nothing as Yuto and Valanthe were teleported into the book. Megumi watched as Maki sat back down, "What do you think it'd be like?" Maki raised an eyebrow at her, "What would it be like?"
Megumi shrugged, "Being a Questinger?" Maki frowned, "I just want Sebion to pay for the pain they've caused my world, if being a Questinger allows me to do that then I suppose it'd be a great feeling." Megumi nodded, "It'd be cool to be a hero, I guess, I've never really done anything like that." Remlin cleared his throat to signal them to stop talking, "Ok girls, I guess since Valanthe and Yuto are gone, I suppose I'll give you a bit of a lesson on the world's history." Maki was about to speak up but Remlin interrupted her, "A history that only I know, young ranger, now sit down and hear my tale." Maki nodded and sat back in her seat, both ready to hear what the wizard had to say.
0000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000
Meanwhile within Kataryuko, QuestinBlue and Black arrived at a large forest, apparently burning from an attack from Sebion. QuestinBlue turned to his teammate, "What could have done this?" QuestinBlack shook her head, "Something powerful, and I'm sure we'll find out what did it." QuestinBlue frowned underneath his helmet, "I was afraid you'd say that." Suddenly they began to hear galloping and out of the fire came a demonic creature that caused QuestinBlue to step back in fear, "What is that? It looks like a minotaur and a demon had a baby."
QuestinBlack brought up her daggers and got into a fighting stance, "Armanite, it's resistant to magic and poison, the idiot would've been useful here." QuestinBlue brought out his staff, "So basically my magic is useless here?" QuestinBlack watched as the Armanite roared at them, "Unfortunately, I think this may have been a trap." The Armanite charged forward at them, QuestinBlack rushing to meet it, the Armanite tried crushing her with it's hooves but she jumped out of the way as it used it's claws to send an unprepared QuestinBlue back and while Black was in the air was met with its serrated tail that sent her back, injuring her.
It roared at them as a tiefling appeared at its side, "Poor Questinger's nothing without the red one." QuestinBlack grimaced under her helmet, "Poor Malin, nothing without Vrefaris to order you around." Malin frowned, "Ever since I met you Valanthe Naïlo, I dreamed of killing you, and now the one I work with is going to achieve that dream for me." QuestinBlack scoffed at her, "Ever since I met you Malin, I knew Vrefaris kept you around as eye candy, something for the other generals to look at and nothing more."
Malin frowned and her hand glowed with darkness, "Kill them and leave nothing left." The darkness in her hand engulfed the Armanite and caused him to grow large as QuestinBlue turned to his teammate, "You just had to piss her off?" Black nodded, "I just told the truth." The two brought up their changers and pushed the dice in, "D15: SUMMON FIGURE" The Blue and Black's figures appeared and they jumped into them ready for a fight as Blue looked at the Armanite nervously, "We can't form QuestinOh, so this is gonna be tough!"
Black frowned under her helmet and pushed the worry out of her mind, "We'll be fine, this thing can't be invincible." The two figures began to charge at the Armanite, hoping that the two of them would be enough to defeat it.
0000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000
Grant Masters approached the wreckage, the Armanite had done its job, it had absolutely destroyed the Questinger's and now all that's left was the nearly destroyed figures. As he approached he heard Malin call to him in an almost sing-song voice, "Oh Grant, guess what?" Grant smiled and approached where she was, he had to admit he enjoyed the way she said his name.
Malin emerged from the figure wreckage and dropped two things before him, the unconscious bodies of Valanthe and Yuto looking worse for wear. Grant smiled, "Excellent, we'll bring them to Vrefaris and stage a public execution in DarkFang, all of Sebion will celebrate their deaths." Malin nodded as she began to drag the two, excited for the chance to kill them personally.
0000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000
Meanwhile Remlin looked into an orb of energy, a horrified look on his face as Malin dragged Valanthe and Yuto away. Something was preventing him from seeing who the other person was but he wasn't worried about that right now. If Yukishi didn't return soon then there would be no hope left, Valanthe and Yuto would be executed and Yukishi's training wouldn't matter.
That was of course unless, he turned to see Maki and Megumi the QuestinDice from before glowing in their hands as neither noticed, perhaps if Yukishi returned then they would have a chance to save their comrades. Remlin sighed as the orb dispersed into nothing, this game he played with Vrefaris was growing much more interesting.
0000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000
