I found my first attempt (from when I was brainstorming Twilight and wrote it on a couple of sides of A5) at writing Carys finding out about Carlisle, and it's so terrible and funny to me (the idea that this is how she finds out) I had to share it. Originally, he was going to tell her the same sort of thing they tell Charlie, to protect her from knowing he was a vampire, therefore from the Volturi if they ever found out.
I prefer the fanfic canon haha!
Stage directions and everything to start.
They kiss for the first time.
Carys pulled away slowly, her eyes wide as she stared at Carlisle. Her mind couldn't reconcile at first, but as he stared back in silence, she began to feel her mind shift back into place.
"What..." She trailed off, feeling strange. Licking her lips, she tried to stall for time. His lips had been... Cold. As cold as his hands. And they were hard. Not just firm, but hard. Like stone. "What...?"
Carlisle said nothing, and she felt irrational - no, completely rational - fear rise from her belly, up through her chest.
"Car..." She couldn't understand. "Carlisle... Your lips are..." She watched as his lips firmed, looked more carefully at him, and realised... "You're not breathing."
She placed her hand on his stone cold chest, shifting it over his shirt in an effort to find a heartbeat. All she needed was one beat to know that she was just-
"You won't find it, Carys. My heart hasn't beat in a very long time."
Carys felt the world begin to spin. She anchored herself by gripping his shirt. "That's... That's not possible..." she whispered, her voice faint as she repeated the sentence - more for herself than for him.
Anger rose up through her.
"You're lying. Why are you... Why are you messing with me like this? It's not funny!" she snapped, pulling herself away completely. Something else had laced her tone, mingling with the anger...
Fear. Again.
"I'm not... I promise... Darling, I'm-"
"You're what, Carlisle? Im-Immortal?" Her fear having quickly won out once again, she shook her head as she took another slow, careful step away from him. "What... What do you want from me? Fear? Because you have it. You can stop now. Whatever kind of joke this is, you can-"
Carys screamed as Carlisle disappeared. A moment later, her stomach dropped as she caught sight of him across the room, leaning lightly against the wall, hands in his trouser pockets as if he was trying to seem less threatening.
Less threatening? He was... She was more terrified than ever.
