Girlfriend?
Girlfriend, like 'Girl that's a friend'? Or...?
She was pulled from her thoughts by a soft knock on the door.
She cleared her throat. "Come in."
...
"Detective Rizzoli? I'm Dr. Parker," the man said as he reached out and shook Jane's hand.
"You came in with Dr. Isles, yes?"
"Yes. Is she ok?"
"She's stable. She has a nasty gash on the back of her head and she lost a lot of blood. It looks like she might have hit a rock or another hard object during the fall. She passed out from the blood loss but she also most certainly has a concussion. We won't know the full extent of the damage until she wakes up but she is expected to make a full recovery. I gotta say, she's a very lucky woman. If the truck had hit her while she was crouched, she probably wouldn't be here." Those words felt like a stab to the chest.
"Is there anything I can do? When do you think she'll wake up?!"
"We had to put staples in the wound to close it up so she's going to need rest. I'd estimate that she will sleep through the night and probably wake up in the morning but right now, I need you to let me take a look at that leg."
"I'm fine, Doc," she said, brushing him off. "When can I see her?"
"I heard that you might try and get out of this," he chuckled.
"I can see that your wound has started bleeding again," he said while gingerly approaching Jane's leg.
He knelt down next to her. "May I?".
She nodded her head and helped him pull up her pant leg.
He peeled off the tape that the EMT had put over the gauze and slowly took them both off, revealing a gash that was about 4 inches long, thankfully it wasn't very deep or wide. She winced. He looked at the wound and then up at her.
"I'm afraid you're going to need stitches, Detective."
"I was afraid you'd say that," she said looking everywhere in the room but at him.
"Tell you what, we'll get you all stitched up and then we can get you over to see Dr. Isles. Deal?"
She looked down at him. "Deal."
He stood up, nodded and excused himself from the room to gather some supplies. He returned shortly with Nurse Rachel.
"We're going to numb the area but you'll still feel a small amount of pain," she said.
"Do what you gotta do," she said, slowly standing up to move to the table that Nurse Rachel was prepping. She laid some fresh paper down and helped Jane climb onto it.
...
Rachel helped Jane stand after they were finished stitching up her leg. It didn't take very long and even though they had numbed the skin, she could still feel a pick and pinch every now and again. It was nothing compared to the pain she felt hours earlier when she got the wound. They gave her a set of crutches to use while she was in the ER so as to not put too much pressure on her leg and risk breaking a stitch.
"I hear there's someone out in the waiting room for you. Do you need anything else, maybe some help walking out?" Rachel asked, as Dr. Parker said his goodbyes and excused himself.
"I got it, thank you though. You've been more than helpful," Jane said as she flashed her signature Jane Rizzoli smile.
The nurse returned the smile and went to leave the room but stopped when she heard Jane say something.
"Actually, there is one more thing."
"Yes, Detective Rizzoli?" Rachel said, turning back around to face Jane.
"What did you mean earlier when you said that you wished you had a 'girlfriend' like me?".
"I think you already know, Detective." She gave Jane a warm smile, winked and then turned to open the door and with that, she was gone.
