Reviews:

gamer611: Thank you for another epic chapter and sorry if my last review was a little long-winded especially in regards to some of my questions. The Rei and Van interactions were simply brilliant and you captured Van's personality nicely as I can see him in-game reacting like he did in this chapter if he interacted with a character like Rei.

The fight between them was rather interesting as it showed the contrast between a mercenary who fights like an animal and a fixer who is a properly trained martial artist. The ending was hilarious as when Rei tried to end the fight he only got electrocuted for his troubles and Van not apologizing is the appropriate response. Their tag-team against the Ouroboros monster was well done and it was nice to see another Rei craft and see what the gun he got from Morgan does and how it works.

Their more casual interactions were comedy gold with Rei pulling off the perfect case of "Screw This I'm Outta Here" on Van and leaving him for interrogation being both perfect and cold at the same time. Rei screwing with Van back at his office and Van demonstrating his love for sweets to Rei was picture perfect and I can't wait for more casual interactions.

So Rei is going to work as a spriggan for the sake of his goals, can't wait to see how far he gets in regards to that. Overall a very entertaining chapter and I hope you keep up the great work.

No worries, I don't mind a long review and the questions! Thank you, I always enjoyed writing Van so imagining interactions with him is easy to imagine and fun to write! You'd usually expect a team-up with two complete strangers to not be so well, right? But because Van had already seen and experience Rei's skills himself and Rei's unnatural instinct, the two were able to fight without getting in the way of each other much. And that was without a combat link! Also, the mantis monster wasn't one of Ouroboros'. I did say I love tokusatsu :)

Again, thank you for the kind words! I hope the more light-hearted and casual scenes will be to your liking!

Heng Dani: will this reach until canon? They are gonna be BFF for sure, imagine his laughter when Agnes insist to work with then

Oh yes, definitely! It will reach canon, and I fully intend to complete this fic up to the final Kuro game's storyline. The canon start will be a while since a few bases needs to be built, (timeskips and key interactions). Rei would be cackling at Agnes—

Underground Area, Messeldam

"Reviewing report of the stats of Mantis: Speed is inferior against skilled foes. Scythes cannot cut through first-grade steel and similar elements. Shell armor is weak against special colored bullets and their effects, presumably made from pure sepiths. The body can withstand high voltages of electricity but not high degrees of flames."

A lone figure stood in front of a large screen, displaying a video feed of the mantis mutant's battle in the Dark-Light District of Edith.

"Subjects— Rei Liafall and Van Arkride eliminated Mantis through the use of flames combined with lightning."

The voice of a man came from the figure. His whole body was shrouded in darkness, with only the light of the orbal computer illuminating his visage, yet that too was covered by a mask resembling a bird's beak. His fingers went to tap a few buttons as pictures of the former jaeger and fixer popped up. His meticulous gaze was fixated on their profile as his gloved hand tapped his chin.

The masked man could not find much information regarding their pasts, especially about Rei Liafall's. He discovered that Van Arkride used to be in an orphanage, and that was it. Liafall, on the other hand... He found next to nothing about him. None of his birth, origin, and where he came from. That fact made his blood boil and his vein pop. Maybe he hasn't looked hard enough? The two individuals were possibly using a different name than their birth ones. A click of the tongue echoed through his mask. The man closed off the windows of their pictures, soon opening a different set of images.

There were fishlike, buglike, and beastlike humanoids similar to the mantis mutant on screen. A total of eighteen monsters were displayed, each with notes attached to the pictures detailing their strengths, weaknesses, and status. They all were different, down from appearance to abilities. But they had one thing in common in their files.

Their status was set to DEAD.

Reaching out to the darkness, the masked man opened a drawer as though he knew its location, taking out a vial. It was the last bottle of the drug he had been developing for years— the key to his dreams. It contained a luminescent, green liquid that danced inside the class as the man whirled the container gently. Careful, it was the last of his babies. All of the pitiful lab rats who were fortunate enough to be injected with his salvation died in some shape or form.

Some were killed by others.

Some killed each other.

And others died the moment they were born.

"When will my perfect child be born?" His voice pierced the silence of the abyss, moaning in an overdramatic fashion.

"You're still hung up on that?"

A smooth, masculine voice interjected through the darkness. The masked man turned his back and saw slitted red eyes beaming through the dark. The veil of shadows hid their figure, but the charisma and authority they exuded were evident. They blended in the shadows as their eyes flicked to the screen.

"Of course I am! Birthing the perfect kaijin is one of the key steps to flooding this world in complete fear! You, of all people, should know how important this is for me, for us."

"I do, and I have no intentions of getting in the way of your plans to achieve that." The voice assured. "Still, the incomplete kaijins have their uses and can serve as valuable assets for our plans for the future. You've shown me what they are capable of."

"You're telling me to lend you my children so they could be used as sacrificial pawns?" Contrary to his tone, the lips of the masked man twisted into a sadistic smile. "After reviewing the data of Mantis, I can confirm the kaijins can produce more fear than regular monsters. Hawk and Beetle had shown higher intelligence than their siblings before they perished. If I can replicate the result of their creation, they can serve you as long as I designate you as their father. All of them are smarter than the average monster, so they can be of use as grunts and given simple orders."

With an army of kaijins, everyone will inevitably be consumed by fear. Humans fear what they do not understand. Their minds try to comprehend an existence that they cannot fathom. They were creatures with humanoid bodies and monstrous features. They were once humans before they turned into the man's precious children— kaijins.

"But I assume that creating an army of your children will take more than a year?" The voice caught on to what he was saying.

"Yes. This last vial will be used as a base for me to improve the formula. I will need three years' worth of ingredients to create several batches."

"I see. I will have them sent to you within this week."

"You have my thanks."

"Unnecessary. You are an important piece, after all. You only let me know if you need anything else." The voice let out a chuckle, fading along with footsteps. "I'll leave you to your business now, Doctor. I look forward to the birth of your kaijins."

With those parting words, the voice left.

The masked man now known as Doctor held his hand out into the darkness once more, pulling out several vials.

"He should be done with his mission by tomorrow. Hmm, I suppose there's nothing wrong if I send a vial or two for data."

Riverside District, Capital City of Edith

Rei leaned against his chair, taking a bite of his hotdog. One of his legs rested on the table with the other crossed over it. His eyes glued to the river to his side.

It had already been four months since he became Edith's second Spriggan and the second member of Arkride Solutions Office. Yep, that was the name of their Spriggan business. Van never promoted his work as a Spriggan before, with only those in the know capable of submitting 4spgs in the past, and those in the know only knew about it due to the first few clients of the Spriggan spreading the word.

By being an official business of sorts and having a name, there would be more opportunities to receive 4spgs. Being known has its downsides, though. Due to the nature of Spriggan work, they'd most likely draw attention from the police, bracers, and maybe even the CID. It did not help that three people from two of those groups knew Van.

The first week of Rei operating as a Spriggan was like an orientation to the field... which Van soon learned became unnecessary because he was such a natural.

His style resembled Van's when it came to negotiations and investigations, but a little violet at times. And while the merc sometimes threw aggressive responses during a request, he was suited for the work. But the man had to remember and follow the policies Van established.

It took a lot of self-control not to shoot the fuckers he had encountered in the head.

A lot of self-control.

Working on 4spgs while gathering info and investigating the whereabouts of the auburn-haired woman became their routine. The day Rei became familiar with the layout of the capital, he became in charge of handling... the shadier requests, ones that Van would be worried to take on himself.

True to his words, the ex-jaeger did his job as a double agent whenever it was required, expanding his connection and double-crossing those who crossed the line of Arkride Solutions' morality. It was the only exception that allowed him to be ruthless, letting his inner jaeger out. Van still couldn't allow him to kill anyone, though.

Regardless, it was almost a guarantee that those who crossed him would need immediate medical attention.

As Rei continued to take on the more devious requests, he started to work solo more frequently, working as the shadow of Arkride Solutions every time he dived deep into the abyss of the underworld. It became normal for the ex-jaeger to travel in the shadows to avoid the eyes of the police and bracers.

Rei had to admit he was now the shadier man out of the two Spriggans.

He needed to be careful in dealing with his 4spgs, however. Lest he wants to get consumed by the abyss.

Rei was relaxing by the riverside since Van said he didn't need the merc to do any work for today. At least he was attempting to relax; his mind was somewhere else.

'Still no info about any recent sightings...' Rei mused to himself with a scowl, thinking back to their recent investigation for the auburn-haired woman. 'Maybe I should check out the Dark-Light District.'

"It's rude to prop your legs on the table, you know." He cocked his head slightly to face the familiar voice. The dark-haired merc was greeted by a smile from the ashen-haired bracer. "I'm glad to see you're all right, Nameless Mercenary."

That got him to quirk a brow. "Come again?"

Her brows furrowed as she helped herself to the seat across from him. "Surely you've heard what happened in the Dark-Light District four months ago? You went there after I told you the directions."

'Ohhh, so that's what she was on about...' Scarfing down his snack, Rei removed his legs from the table and rested his arms instead. "I did go there, but I pretty much left after getting my gun repaired."

It wasn't technically a lie. Rei did leave Edith's underbelly after he used Morgan's name to lure the Spriggan to the abandoned subway. He obviously couldn't tell the bracer he was involved in eliminating that mantis monstrosity; it was his reason for making his escape to avoid a troublesome situation.

From the looks of it, it seemed like she didn't know of his involvement. It was a good call that he paid Morgan a pretty mira to keep him from saying anything about the man to the lawful authorities. But he did have a mind to smack his head for letting his name slip when he led them to the scene.

Gah... The merc knew his luck might run out soon, knowing how perceptive the woman could be.

"I just got back, actually." He said, resting his chin on his palm. "I had a job that took me away for a couple of months after getting my gun fixed. You mind telling me what exactly happened?" He once again told a half-truth. His shadier jobs had taken him to different parts of Calvard, most of the time.

The ashen-haired swordswoman hummed and stared at the ex-jaeger for a few seconds before nodding, retelling the events. Rei kept a neutral look, occasionally showing some surprise to keep himself from being suspected. He muted out everything relating to the incident. The man was there, and Van had already informed him about what had happened before they arrived.

Apparently, the mutant appeared out of nowhere through one of the entrances and began wreaking havoc. Many mercenaries and crooks engaged the monster while everyone else tried to escape. According to Morgan, the creature killed them effortlessly, cutting through them like butter.

That begged the question in Rei's mind once more: where did that kind of monster come from?

"I can't help but wonder its origins." The woman voiced a similar thought to his own, which he nodded in agreement. "What do you think?"

"In all of my years as a mercenary, it's my first time hearing of a monster like that." That was no lie. He had never encountered a humanoid monster with attributes like that mantis before, but he couldn't rule out their existence somewhere in the continent either. "You think it's a monster of the higher elements?"

She frowned, shaking her head. "I can't say for sure until I see it for myself."

"Fair," Rei nodded. "It would be a first if that was the case. Then again, monsters appearing in areas with the higher elements present look like demons or ghouls. Although that mantis monster..."

"Sounded more like a fusion between an insect and human." The ashen-haired woman's eyes widened as she finished the merc's sentence. "That means... there's a real possibility that someone's been experimenting on humans to turn them into monsters. It could be related to that request..."

"Request? What request?"

The woman gave no explanation as she took hold of Rei's hand, pulling him up from his seat with surprising strength. Her grip around his hand was no joke that grunts would spill from his mouth.

"We must go to the Dark-Light District to confirm my hunch!" She declared, then a giggle followed. "I'm surprised. I didn't expect a conversation with a mercenary to be so fruitful."

"Glad to be of service." The merc deadpan with a roll of his eyes. "But why does a mercenary like me need to go? Whatever you're doing is your business, woman. Bracer business."

"Now, now, don't be like that. My instincts tell me your presence will be of great help." Instincts? That was his thing! "If you come with me, I'll take you to this bar that serves wonderful cocktails."

"Whoa, bribing a hired gun? Are you sure you're a bracer?"

She shrugged casually with a faint smirk. "I'm not asking you to put a bullet in someone's head. I'm simply asking you to come, maybe help a bit? You might not even have to do anything besides standing next to me." She withdrew her hand and crossed her arms. "As a bracer, there's only so much I can see and do. However, that also applies to those in the grey, no?"

...

Did the woman just assume that Rei Liafall, formerly one of Zephyr's most ruthless jaegers, was morally grey?

That almost got him to laugh.

Yeah, he may be a Spriggan now. The principles that Van told him and the job itself sounded like they'd fit in the grey alignment, but Van said something that caught him off guard, yet he couldn't help but agree.

That being said, I'm not completely grey. I'm more... bluish-black if that makes sense.

It did, at least it did for him. It was strange, and the mercenary could not figure out why he understood the statement. Or maybe he did. And he just couldn't put it into words?

What kind of hue would he be?

'Ha! Me, grey? Maybe in the past, but I'm too stained in black now.' A melancholic smile displaying acceptance crept across his visage. Rei chuckled when the bracer gave him an odd look as he crossed his arms as well. "Okay, let's turn this into a contract. For my payment: three drinks. Do we have a deal?" He held his hand out.

A smirk grew on her pale features, accepting the handshake. "Deal."

"Can I ask for the name of this pretty client of mine?"

"Hmm? Sorry, but who could you be referring to? Do you have another client nearby~?" Rei playfully rolled his eyes and smirked. "It's Olivia Soleil." The woman let out a giggle. "May I request your name as well, Nameless Mercenary?"

Beowulf played along as he gave a gentleman's bow. "Rei Liafall, at your service."

When he saw the faint twitching of her lips and brief narrowing of her eyes, Rei Liafall knew he had dug himself a grave.

Beowulf had worked alongside all sorts of people during his time as a mercenary, ranging from fellow killers-for-hire, Imperial soldiers, wandering practitioners of different schools, and local gangs. Yes, most of them were questionable and shady groups, but he was pretty shady himself, so he didn't mind in the least. As long as they had a common goal, Rei wouldn't mind helping out as long as they got off his back afterward.

It sucked that they never kept their word most of the time. The merc could only recall a few exceptions where they either left him to his own devices after accomplishing their goal or tried to get to know him because of genuine interest.

Those exceptions eventually became his foreign confidants. They made for good drinking buddies too!

Would Olivia Soleil become one as well, he wondered. They had a somewhat common goal: wanting information about the mantis mutant and its origins. The two obviously had their own concerns (more of Olivia's than Rei's), but both had a feeling they'll soon get some answers. Guess instincts and intuition kicked in, eh?

As Olivia busied herself gathering more information about her request, Rei wandered the area for the time being. It was a good excuse to inspect its recovery. He heard two months ago that a couple of black-market dealers assisted with speeding up restoring the district's condition, and he found it understandable. Expecting the President to help restore an underground district unknown to most civilians was nothing more than a dream.

Rei had to say; he was pleasantly surprised that everything looked as if they hadn't been split in half. The district used to be a complete wreck the last time he came, and now it was like it was good as new.

He noticed a noticeable amount of jaeger dropouts and other mercenaries around the bars too. Huh. He guessed it made sense for more of them to be around. Whether these men were here for a drink or someone paid them to be here, it was none of his business.

"How did I completely miss this place getting fixed..." He shook his head before sighing. "Well, that's on me for expecting that I'd come here whenever I had to do those kinds of 4spgs. I didn't need to go down here most of the time."

Rei grumbled. He could literally count all of the times he went to the wrecked underbelly of Edith with one hand.

'Bah, that's no excuse. I coulda check whenever I had free time...' At the very least, he should have come and stopped by Morgan's stall to check on him knowing his merchandise and place of business were not exempted from the incident.

Snapping his fingers, Rei made up his mind. "Time to see how the bastard's doing."

He made his way to the masked man's stall, hands in his pockets. When his amber orbs caught sight of Morgan's mask, he noticed a bundle of silver hair in the corner of his eyes.

His stomach churned and twisted.

As if sensing his presence, she, who had silver hair, turned around and greeted his orbs with her sky blues. Then, she waved.

"Oh, hey, Rei!" Shizuna flashed a smile. "Been a while since we saw each other, huh?"

"Oh? You two know each other?"

"I was about to ask the same thing," added Olivia upon Morgan's query, walking up to her hired merc. A playful grin danced on her features. "Your girlfriend~?"

"Hell no."

"Yup!"

The two mercenaries looked at each other with contradicting expressions: a scowl and a smirk. She was shitting him! Despite the mask, Rei could see Morgan's curiosity through his eyes alone. Don't believe her; she's fibbing!

The bracer's grin widened in glee as she proceeded to nudge her companion's shoulder.

"I'll admit that you're quite a looker. I didn't expect your girlfriend to be this pretty, though~."

"She's not my girlfriend!"

"Thank you!" The silverette accepted the indirect compliment, causing the dark-haired merc to groan.

"She's the last person I'd date..." He groaned and ignored the mock shock of Shizuna, merely gesturing at her. "Olivia, Shizuna." Rei directed his attention to the Ikaruga swordswoman with a half-lidded gaze. "Shizuna, Olivia."

"Hi!" A wave and a carefree smile to the bracer.

"Anyways, why are you here? You told me you left Edith the day after you completed your work. Don't tell me..."

"I have another job!" The silver-haired woman grinned, much to Rei's annoyance. "I came back to investigate the sudden disappearances of people that have been occurring in Edith."

That got the two to furrow their brows.

"You're looking into this matter too?" Olivia uttered her surprise. "We're investigating the disappearances as well. Would you like to swap—"

Rei raised a hand, halting Olivia from offering her suggestion, earning a raised brow.

"Just a sec," The ex-jaeger said before turning to Shizuna, crossing his arms. "What exactly are you investigating about the disappearances? I doubt you'd accept a job that involves investigating every disappearance that recently happened in the capital unless your client paid you a ridiculous amount of mira."

"I'm not surprised a fellow mercenary would question it." Shizuna shrugged, amusement apparent in her voice. "I don't usually disclose the details of my current contracts to outsiders, but I suppose I can spill a little bit."

She said the latter with a quieter tone before gesturing the two to follow her in a lone alleyway away from prying eyes.

Once she confirmed no one was nearby to listen, Shizuna continued.

"It would be better to say that I'm investigating a disappearance. A member of the republican party disappeared after returning from his business trip a week ago." A member of the government? Yeah, that sounded more like work a mercenary would accept. "My client ordered me to find him as soon as possible and gave me permission to deal with the kidnappers if there are any."

"I didn't know a member of the republican party has been missing since last week..." Olivia frowned, distressed.

"It's a good thing those government dogs didn't cause any commotion when the guy went missing. He may not be the president, but there remains a possibility the kidnappers might use the panic and fear over his disappearance to kidnap more people."

The bracer's frown deepened while Shizuna nodded in agreement.

"Yup. I immediately went here to gather information. I figured the capital's little underworld area would find what I need." Shizuna placed a hand on her hip and sighed. "As much as I would like to say I found a lead, they told me practically the same thing: that the victims disappeared during the evening."

"The same as what I heard..." Olivia exhaled in exasperation. "It seems we both have a job that's related to these disappearances. I already asked Rei for his assistance, but I'd like to ask for yours as well since our objectives align."

The former jaeger's face met his palm, producing a loud smack sound. "Do we really need her help?"

"We need as much help as possible due to the little information we possess. Besides, wouldn't you rather work with another mercenary than a bracer?"

"Fine..."

"Hehe, you two are quite close," Shizuna remarked, prompting the two to wave a hand.

"No, not at all."

The temporary partners turned to each other with a questioning brow raised, soon returning their gaze to the Ikaruga mercenary.

"It's only been my second time meeting her, and I'm only with her because I want free drinks." Rei elaborated.

"Free drinks?"

The ash-haired bracer rolled her eyes, yet a smile surfaced on her visage. "It's Rei's payment for coming with me to the Dark-Light District."

"Ah, that makes sense!" Shizuna bobbed her head a few times.

"Back to the topic at hand, will you help us with our investigation?"

"Hmm..."

The silver-haired beauty placed a finger on her chin and closed her sky blues, pondering her decision. Rei really didn't want to involve himself with this unnaturally strong mercenary more than necessary if he could help it. Their last contact with each other was the orbmail Shizuna sent telling Rei she had completed her job and left the capital. He was thankful the woman hadn't called him for any duels when they first exchanged contacts, but anxiety was a stubborn enemy.

Why she had the need to inform him about a job he wasn't part of though, Rei had no idea.

Suddenly, a mysterious chill ran down his spine as his heartbeat thumped with nervousness. His face had taken a paler shade. As usual, his instincts were telling him something bad was approaching…

But what?

He wasn't sure how, but he found himself staring at Shizuna with apprehension.

"Okay, I'll lend you a hand. But I don't work for free."

"Of course. How much for your services?" The former Auclair maid received a negative headshake. "Huh?"

"No, thanks. My wallet is quite full at the moment. I would much rather you owe me a favor for my assistance than mira as payment. I'll claim it once we accomplish both of our objectives." She stated her smile widening by a rege. Rei shivered. "Who are you two looking for?"

"Ah," Olivia scratched her cheek sheepishly. She hadn't disclosed anything about her request to Rei's... acquaintance. "I'm looking for the husband of my client. He disappeared three days ago, and just like with everyone who disappeared, witnesses said he vanished during the evening, specifically in the Seiden District."

Her frown resurfaced as she clenched her left arm. "But aside from my client's husband, I'm looking into the sudden disappearances of everyone else who I heard have vanished." Her voice had lost most of its usual volume as she looked down, earning a bothered gaze from the ex-jaeger.

"Oi..."

"Five kids, three teenagers, four office workers, an elderly man, and a magazine reporter..." Olivia muttered as her eyes darkened. "In total: fifteen have vanished. All of them have already been reported to the police. Others also posted a request regarding their disappearance. Of course, my colleagues are working on them as we speak, but so far none have found anyone."

Rei did his best not to let a scowl form, yet not even he could prevent himself from making a face after hearing the revelation. Office workers and reporters were one thing, but children and the elderly? His trigger finger twitched while he gritted his teeth.

Olivia didn't mention who exactly she was searching for when the two headed for the Dark-Light District, only saying she was looking for the missing individuals after hearing of their disappearance from either friends, family, or acquaintances. A flame— one of wrath, lit up inside the mercenary, a sliver of it creeping across his features.

Sky blue eyes took notice of the scowl of her fellow mercenary. Her lips didn't part; she understood from his facial expression that he was mad.

No, he was more than mad. His amber eyes told her everything.

Rei was furious.

Nodding in understanding, Shizuna took note of the information, pulling out her orbment.

'Well, I guess now they'll be of use. Good thing Kurogane insisted I take a few scouts with me.' Tapping a few buttons on her orbment, the silverette informed said scouts about their orders. Once finished, Shizuna pocketed her device. "I contacted my comrades and told them to scour the capital for those who were reported missing."

Despite his growing rage, Rei found himself smirking.

"Ho? Didn't know the others from the Ikaruga came with you."

"Wait, the Ikaruga?" Olivia parroted, alarmed eyes darting to Shizuna.

"A subordinate of mine pestered me on taking a few, just in case." She shook her head with an amused sigh. The woman cocked her head to the bracer, smiling with mock innocence. "And yes, the Ikaruga."

"O-Oh my..." Olivia glanced at her hired merc, both in shock and awe. "I suspected you'd have mercenary friends, but this was beyond my expectations. I can't say I'd be surprised if you worked with an Ikaruga jaeger, but to think you're actually close friends with one..."

"I never worked with her group before, only heard of them in passing. And I am not friends with her; we're acquaintances at best!"

"That's a mean thing to say when we already had a friendly spare and a race on our way to the capital. We even exchanged numbers too..." Shizuna argued, lips deceivingly forming into a frown that showed no indication she was hurt by his words.

This girl!

Did she forget she ambushed him? His growing rage got toppled down as annoyance stood in victory. Any words of protest were held back upon receiving an accusatory glare from the bracer. Rei grumbled and facepalmed, turning away but not before catching a glimpse of a grin from that damn silverette.

Due to their antics, the tension was dispelled as giggles rang out. Rei heaved a tired sigh, a phrase Van constantly used, leaving his lips.

"Give me a break..."

Managed to get two chapters out this month, yay! I'll address a few things: First, yes, Olivia did know that Rei was in the Dark-Light District thanks to Morgan's slip-up but chose not to say anything until Rei gave away his name. More on Olivia's thoughts on him lying and stuff in the next chapter. Second, Rei likes to keep himself hidden from the public, or at least he doesn't carelessly reveal his face whenever he has to go out for anything other than a 4spg. So, the people like the police and bracers (except Olivia) don't know what he looks like.

Finally, the introduction of the second OC (not counting Rei) and a certain someone, the Doctor was responsible for creating the Mantis kajin and sending it to the Dark-Light District. I don't have many OCs, but the ones I have integrated into the plot are important for the changes I made in events.

That is all. Thank you all for reading and for those leaving reviews! I always appreciate them! Things might get busy for me, but I'll try to get out the next chapter for December! As a Chrismas present of sorts XD

Until next time!
