What did you mean earlier when you said that you wished you had a 'girlfriend' like me?".
"I think you already know, Detective." She gave Jane a warm smile, winked and then turned to open the door and with that, she was gone.
...
Confused, Jane hobbled back out into the waiting room to find her mother sitting in a chair, surrounded by bags. She had packed one for Jane, one for Maura and in true Angela fashion, she brought enough food to feed an army.
The elder Rizzoli was mindlessly, flipping through one of the waiting room magazines when she heard the sound of crutches and boot heels clacking on the tile floor.
She looked up, "Janie!!!"
Angela threw down the magazine, ran over and wrapped her arms around her daughter so tightly. Jane could swear she lost all feeling in her chest.
"Ma, you're crushing my sternum," she said breathlessly.
"I've been worried sick about you. And Maura! Where is she?" Angela asked, looking around.
"I haven't been back to see her yet. They told me if I was a good patient, they'd let me see her."
"Patient?" Angela asked, puzzled. She stepped back, gave Jane a once over and just now noticed the crutches she was holding and all of the blood on her clothes.
"Oh my God, is that your blood??" Angela asked bursting into tears.
"Ma, relax. Some of it is mine. Most of it is Maura's."
"Maura's? Dear God. what happened?" She asked, wiping the tears from her eyes.
"Didn't Frankie tell you? I'm assuming he's the one that called you."
"All he told me was that there was an accident and that I needed to get here right away. He said that you and Maura both got hurt but that you were alive. He said he needed to go because Vince and Barry just arrived and he needed to get back to work. That's all he said, Janie. I had no idea what happened and I was so worried!"
"I'm fine, Ma. It's just a cut on my leg. It's Maura I'm worried about. She hit her head and was bleeding really bad. She passed out."
"Oh my..."
"They said she has a concussion and it's all my fault, Ma..." Jane trailed off, losing the battle against her tears.
Angela could sense that her daughter was in physical pain but that the emotional pain she was feeling was much greater. Instinctively, she pulled Jane into a tight hug again as she began weeping. Jane knew she didn't have to put up a front with her mother but it was still hard for her to be vulnerable with anyone. Anyone but Maura.
"Shhh, Janie. It's ok. Whatever happened, I know it was an accident. Maura knows that too," Angela said, rubbing Jane's back softly.
They stood like that for a moment until Angela felt the shaking stop and Jane's breathing even out.
She pulled away from Jane and looked her over once again. "Let's ask somebody if there's some where we can get you cleaned up," Angela said running back to grab the overnight bag she packed for her. "There's fresh clothes in here for you and I brought homemade gnocchi!"
Jane couldn't help but smile as she wiped away the few remaining tears on her cheeks. "Thanks, Ma. I'm going to get changed and go find Maura. You don't have to stay if you don't want to."
She looked at the clock again. 1:15am. She felt terrible that her mother was up this late, worrying about her and her best friend.
"If you think I'm leaving this hospital, I'm going to have them check your head for a concussion next!" Angela warned.
"Ok, ok," Jane said with a chuckle. "I'll come find you soon."
"Go ahead Janie, I'll be right here," she said as she walked back to her seat and picked her magazine back up, opening it to the page where she left off.
