I was definitely not going to screw that up.

I guess I never really put a lot of thought into this side of me, but ever since I allowed myself to have romantic feelings for Burges, I felt different. I felt more mature.

Before this, I thought that relationships were just this thing in which we were meant to go along with whatever was expected of us, you know? Or maybe I was never really happy enough or involved enough to be really committed to every decision I made.

The thing is that now, I care. I care about her and I care about our relationship and I really, really want this to work out for us. I'm in the best place I've even been and I'm sure Kim has a lot to do with that.

After we told Voight about us and the rest of the unit exactly where we were standing as a couple, I mean that we were not only just hooking up, everything was so much easier. The certainty of what we had made it feel safe and it was just as sexy and exhilarating as it was before, plus we would still sneak out and make out in the locker room, only now we checked to make sure Platt wasn't in the building.

The weekend was coming up, and that thing that I had said to Burgess about not knowing whether or not I could make it to our date was true, but only because I was cooking up something else in my head, and I really wish it would work.

We were having a quick lunch right after we stopped to check on a couple of CIs for a case that we were working on and Kev was looking into some financials and phone records that Voight had asked him to.

"Babe, I think I left my earrings at your place the other night." She took a sip of her lemonade as she picked on her sandwich wrapper.

"You did. I found them in the bathroom and left them in the drawer of your nightstand." Her head darted up to the sound of that, everytime I said something like that, she would stress to the point how whatever it was I was talking about wasn't really hers. "Whatever, the one that's on the side of the bed you sleep in. Is that better?" She chuckled, her smile was shining so bright.

"Thank you. I'll take them next time I'm there."

"When will that be? I kinda missed waking up to you this morning."

"Me too. I missed other things as well." The spark in her eyes told me exactly what she was talking about.

"Please don't get me all worked up Burgess." I finally took a bite of my BLT and giggled as she looked down to the table. I took a drink from my plastic cup and gathered the guts to go straight to the point. Or at least as straight as I could. "Darlin', do you ski?"

"What?"

"Do you ski?"

"I guess I could say I 'ski'." She used air quotations to emphasize that last word. "I suck, but I can manage. Why?"

"Here's the thing. You know how my family and I go skiing every year?"

"Mm-hmm"

"Well, we're going to Michigan this year and I was kinda hoping you'd want to come with me."

"Umm. That's big. Are you sure you want me there? I won't get mad if you want to spend that weekend alone with your family."

"Ok. Got it. If you don't want to come it's absolutely fine, but please don't freak out about it."

"No, no, wait. That's not what I meant at all." Her hand found mine and she entwined our fingers. "I guess I'm just a little concerned this might be too much on them. Like, they barely know me and here I come barging into your yearly family trip. Do you know what I mean?"

"Too much for them? Or too much for you?" It was an honest question and I would fully understand if she didn't want to go, although I was wishing otherwise.

"No, I love the fact that you want me to go with you and yes I'd love to go. I am nervous though, what if they see me as the intruder and hate me or something."

"They won't and if they do I couldn't care less because I love you and that's all that matters to me anyway."

"It's what matters to me, too." She squeezed her fingers a little tighter around mine.

"Good. So you're coming with me then?"

"Yes I am, detective."

"That's great because I had already told them you were coming and I booked a private lodge for us which I am sure you will appreciate."

"Ooooohh, can I see some pictures?" Her begging face was adorable.

"No, you can't. It's a surprise. The only thing I'll tell you and just because you hate to be unprepared is to take a bathing suit." Her eyes widened in delight.

"Hot tub?" I just nodded. "Really? I can't wait!"

"And I can't wait to see you in a bathing suit."

"Adam," she rolled her eyes at me. "You've seen me naked."

"Yes. But this is a completely different vibe."

The days leading up to our skiing weekend went by so fast. I already knew that we were having those days off, so that wasn't a problem. We were having Friday and the weekend off, so that gave us two nights away and three days to enjoy. The only thing I needed was Kim's confirmation to book the flights, and now that all the big things were taken care of, we just needed to arrange the details.

Kim had teased me for days with the whole bathing suit thing trying to throw me off with every hint she dropped.

We agreed that she would sleep over at my place and we would leave together for the airport on Friday morning. The flight to Michigan was nice and steady and in three hours or so we were settling in our lodge at the resort. It was a cozy little cabin that was part of the main lodge. It had everything we needed and more.

"Gosh, Adam. This place is perfect." She dropped her bags by the door and stepped inside looking around and paying attention to every detail at sight.

The tiny cabin had a miniature kitchen, good enough to heat up some food and maybe make some breakfast if we wanted to avoid the buffet. There was a lounge type of area with a couch with a couple of blankets draped over it and two armchairs with a perfect rustic coffee table to go along with them. But what made the room so special was the stone fireplace with the dark wooden mantle. The ensuite bedroom was very simple, the walls were made of wooden logs except for the one that led to the little balcony, I'm sure that was the asset of the cabin. It was completely private, yet it had the perfect view of the mountains ahead of us and there, in the balcony, was the hot tub. "Everything, the fireplace, the view. Look at that." She pointed to one of the windows in the lounge area. "It's breathtaking."

"I'm glad you like it. I wasn't so sure in the beginning because there was no TV, but then I thought we were really going to pay attention to that with all the skiing we will be doing."

"You mean with all the sex we will be having?"

"I was kinda hoping you'd say that." She walked closer to me and wrapped her arms around my neck.

"Yeah, we'll be doing a lot of that this weekend." She moved her face closer to mine but changed her path last minute, almost caressing my ear with her lips. "You have no idea how turned on I am right now."

"Do you wanna show me?" My hands firmly placed in her hips pulled her towards me. She was well aware of the effect her words had on me.

"Definitely." Words weren't needed any more. I trapped her mouth with mine in a passionate kiss, exploring every inch of her tongue as if it was the first time and my hands instinctively went to her back pockets of her jeans, that was becoming my favorite place to rest them. Her right hand was playing with my hair, while the left one was desperately trying to find its way under my shirt, and it did. The touch of her cold fingertips made the perfect contrast with my body temperature and I just wanted to have her, right there and right now. I walked a few steps towards the couch until I felt Kim's body stiffen, and then I heard what she was hearing.

"Hem… ahem" I could recognize that sound anywhere. Pops, making himself present by clearing his throat.

"Pops, what a surprise." I rolled my eyes as I reluctantly moved away from Kim, she was the only one able to see the expression on my face. "How did you know we were here?"

"Well son, as soon as I got here I asked if you had checked in and they gave me the information. Now, isn't there a hug for your old man?"

"Of course" I didn't even have to move, he practically avalanched over to me and squeezed me between his arms, like he did when I was a little boy. When he finally pulled away he turned to Kim.

"Hello, Kim. It's very nice to see you here. And, sorry for the interruption."

"Oh no, Mr. Ruzek don't apologize, you didn't interrupt anything." Kim's cheeks were no longer red, I think they were purple now, reaching levels of embarrassment that she had never experienced before. It was fun and cute at the same time.

"She's too nice to tell you pops, but yeah you completely ruined our moment."

"Adam!" She scolded me. "Don't listen to your son Mr. Ruzek. It was nothing, really." When I saw dad smile at her, with that warmth and kindness, I knew that he liked her not only as my partner at work, but also as my girlfriend.

"Please, Kim, just call me Bob." Kim nodded. "And don't worry, I know how annoying he can get. I just hope he doesn't drive you crazy this weekend."

"He probably will. But I'm up for the challenge." I snaked her around the shoulders with one arm and left a kiss on her temple.

"In that case, I'll let you two finish settling your things. Adam, we'll meet in the foyer in 30 minutes ok?"

"Got it." As soon as my dad walked out the door I went over to lock it. "Please remind me to keep this locked."

"I will." Her face was full of embarrassment.

"So, where were we?"

"We were getting our things arranged."

"Ummm, that's not what I remember."

"But it's what we're gonna do now."

"Aghh, baby, please." I whined and pleaded but it didn't work.

"No. We have to be ready in half an hour and I wanna cause a better impression than what I just did with your dad."

"Ok. Can I have a kiss at least?"

"Yes. You. Can." She left a kiss after every word she pronounced. "Now let's get ready."

We did, and 30 minutes after we were downstairs waiting to meet up with the rest of my family.

We had barely reached the group of people when I heard the cutest little voice call out my name.

"Uncle Adam!" His little 6 year old feet came racing towards me, I held him up and perched him on my hip.

"Hey, kiddo!" I greeted him as I kissed the top of his head. "How was the trip here? Did you have fun?"

"It was amazing! The lady in the airplane gave me a coloring book and crayons. Can I show it to you?"

"Of course!"

"That flight attendant really deserves a pass straight to heaven. Sam asked her all kinds of questions during the flight." The female voice approaching me interrupted the conversation I was having with my nephew as she did her best to hug us both. "Are you not going to introduce your family?" I just half smiled at her comment, this was typical Kate, you could never really figure out her mood out of the first interaction and her resting bitch face didn't help much either. But once you get to know her, you can see her escence and her sense of humor. She is a great girl who's been through a lot, but she really has our best interest at heart.

"Hey sis! It's great to see you, too. Maybe you should have started there." I rolled my eyes just before I turned to look at Kim who looked confused as crap. "Kim, this is my sister Kate, and her amazing son Sam. Although, I'm pretty sure you've met Kate before"

"Yeah, I think we have. In one of your dad's things at Molly's" Kim smiled as she moved closer in an attempt to hug Amy, but my sister didn't even move.

"I don't remember. I'm sorry." That was the only bitter comment that left Kate's mouth. I was about to kill her. Sammy on the other hand, extended his arms over to Kim waving both his little hands.

"Hi, Kim! Do you like snowball fights?"

"I do." I could tell that she was trying to put aside what Amy had just said and to concentrate only on Sam.

"Yeii! we can have a snowball fight later with uncle Adam." Sammy was unbelievably cute, but right now he was acting like he was on a massive sugar rush.

"How much candy did you let him have?" I questioned my sister.

"That's actually on me."

"Jon! You've made it. Kate said she wasn't sure you'll be able to come."

"I moved some things, I couldn't miss it for the world. Especially knowing that we were having a special guest." Jon was my best bud, we've been friends since high school where he ended up dating my sister and now they're still together and Sammy is here. So that worked out really good for all of us. We don't see each other much because he travels a lot for business, but when we do we have epic fun.

"Jon, this is my girlfriend Kim." Kim smiled and extended her hand for Jon to shake it, instead he just pulled her in for a hug.

"Nice to meet you, Kim."

"Likewise."

"I've heard a lot about you."

"Have you? I hope they were good things."

"They were." At least Jon was making up for my sister's lack of enthusiasm and I was happy so see Kim relax and genuinely smile.

I looked around the room and saw another group of people I wanted to say hello to.

"You're gonna have to excuse me, but I'm taking her. I need to introduce her to a couple more people." I took her hand and slowly walked away. "Ok, step one done. Now you get to meet my aunt, uncle and cousin." She sighed. "Are you ok?" She nodded. The absence of words was worrying me a bit. "Are you sure?"

"Yes, baby. I'm fine. It's nothing." She looked straight into my eyes and I saw the honesty reflected on those beautiful honey brown eyes. "I'm just a little nervous, but it's normal. Plus this was going to happen at some point so.. let's go over there."

"Little Adam!" My aunt's sweet voice echoed through the foyer and I just knew Kim was going to make fun of that pet name later on this weekend.

"Aunt Mags! It's so nice to see you." I hugged her tight and I heard the throat clearing from behind us. That was a distinct Ruzek move apparently, am I going to do that when I get older?

"It's nice to see you too, uncle Joe."

"If it isn't the best cop in the family." Uncle Joe always tried to lift me up.

"Don't say that, dad's gonna get jealous." We both laughed.

"And who is the beautiful young lady?"

"She is the most amazing cop you'll ever meet. This is my girlfriend Kim."

"Kim, they are my aunt Maggie and my uncle Joe."

"It's very nice to meet you."

"Nice to meet you too, dear." Aunt Mags took Kim's hands between hers and looked at me. "What an impeccable taste Little Adam."

"Thanks Mags, just wait until you get to know her more."

"Kim, I know he can be a challenge sometimes, but he is a good man."

"I know, ma'am."

"Please, just call me Maggie."

Meeting my aunt and uncle was the breath of fresh air we needed to get off the bitter aftertaste of what speaking with my sister had been like. Dad and Carol, his wife, were the last ones to come down along with my cousin Brandon.

"Adam Ruzek, please tell who's the hot chick talking to my parents." Brandon Ruzek was almost my age, we were only 3 months apart, me being the oldest of the new Ruzek generation. Growing up with Brandon was the best, we had so much fun since we were little and when we got older you could always count on Brandon to throw the craziest parties, he still did by the way.

"Easy tiger, that's my girl you're talking about."

"Really? You scored that?" I nodded. "Nice to see you've improved your game."

"She's amazing, bro."

"She must be if she's keeping up with you."

"Shut up." I punched his shoulder. "Come on, I'll introduce you."
