11 July 1564
Royal Palace of Olite, Olite, Navarre
Queen Elizabeth of Navarre and Spain's Privy Chambers

A storm raged across northern Spain. Queen Elizabeth and several of her ladies were enjoying a quiet afternoon in her Chambers. Queen Elizabeth loved her inner circle of her ladies and they kept her company and entertained.

Currently, she had Princess Giovanna, Duchess of the Infantado, who was the eldest in her household, but she was beautiful, cultured, independently wealthy, intelligent and was devoted to Elizabeth. Despite being a Princess herself and the wealthiest Duchess in Spain, due to her marriage and also the income she received from her first husband, the late Duke of Parma, she made sure she wasn't surpassing Elizabeth in status.

The next Lady was Lady Elizabeth Brandon. The youngest child of late the Charles Brandon, Duke of Suffolk and his second wife and Elizabeth's aunt, the late Margaret of Aragon. Although she and her older brother, James, were born in England, they were returned to Spain under the care of their aunt, Queen Juana of Spain, by Henry VIII. They grew up in Spain and identified as Spanish, but still kept in close contact with their English siblings. Lady Elizabeth was one of the most beautiful ladies in the Spanish Court and Drew attention when she joined Queen Elizabeth's household when the latter arrived when Lady Elizabeth was fourteen years old. They two cousins were very close and Lady Elizabeth was even allowed to marry for love to Lord Manuel, the eldest son of Lord John, Duke of Vendome and his Portuguese wife, Infanta Maria, Duchess of Viseu. The couple were extremely happy and all grew to a loving family and the two now had a daughter together, little Lady Prudentia, who was nearly four years old.

One new addition to Queen Elizabeth's household was Lady Catalina de Cabrera, the Duchess of Terranova, her seventeen year old niece. Lady Catalina had been a Maid-of-honor to her aunt and her marriage was arranged shortly after to Lord Jaime de Las Torres, the young Duke of Terranova. The marriage seemed to be getting along well, as Lady Catalina was now expecting her first child that was due in just six months.

The youngest new member was sixteen year old Lady Anais de Mendoza. She was the youngest surviving child and daughter of Lord Diego de Mendoza and his first wife, the late Infanta Maria of Spain, the eldest daughter of the late Emperor Charles V, King of Spain. She was connected to the Spanish Royal Family by blood and was another relative of the Queen. She was a good addition to Elizabeth and the Queen cherished her young maid-of-honor. A natural beauty, she also turned a few heads at Court. She was currently reading to her youngest half sister, four year old Lady Juana de Mendoza, who was visiting her older half-sister and her mother, Princess Giovanna on Queen Elizabeth's Chambers.

Queen Elizabeth was enjoying a chess game with her thirteen year old daughter, Infanta Isabel. She was hoping that her daughter would become a great strategist in her future marriage and Queenship.

Isabel smiled, as she placed her next piece.

"Checkmate." she said.

Queen Elizabeth smiled.

"Well, bless me. That is the third time in a row. I am proud of you, darling." she said.

Isabel smiled.

"Thank you, Mother." she said.

Princess Giovanna smiled.

"We definitely have a future Queen here." she said.

Lady Elizabeth smiled at her former charge.

"Well done, Isabel." she said.

Isabel smiled again.

"Thank you." she said.

Lady Catalina, stood up and walked to the window and took a few breaths.

Queen Elizabeth stood up and walked over to her niece.

"Are you well, Catalina?" she said.

Lady Catalina nodded her head.

"Yes, Your Majesty. I did not expect to feel this ill when I became with child. Jaime is excited about it and I am as well, I just wish the illness would pass." she said.

Queen Elizabeth smiled.

"I understand your plight. I have carried eight little ones myself and I will tell you that it does get better." she said.

Lady Catalina smiled and sighed.

"I really want to give Jaimie a boy." she said.

Queen Elizabeth nodded her head.

"Do not worry. You will have a son in time. You are only seventeen years old and you have a great man and you just have to give yourself time." she said.

Lady Catalina smiled. Princess Giovanna walked up to the young girl.

"The Queen is right. I did not have my children until I reached my thirties. You have much more time than I did. My sister, Beatrice, Princess of Andorra has many children and is still having them. You will be successful." she said.

Suddenly, there was a loud banging on the door and yelling.

Queen Elizabeth looked at the door, confused.

"What in the name of the Holy Mother...?" she said.

The door suddenly burst open and seven men ran in with swords and yelled at the ladies. The ladies began to scream. Isabel ran to her mother and held on to her.

Suddenly, Lady Anais stood up.

"How dare you barge into the Queen's Chambers?" she asked.

One of the men walked up to get and slapped her with the back of his hand. Lady Anais fell to the floor and her little Juana screamed.

Princess Giovanna ran to them.

"DO NOT TOUCH MY DAUGHTERS, YOU BASTARD!" she screamed.

Suddenly, one of the men grabbed Lady Catalina, making her scream.

"PLEASE! I AM WITH CHILD!" she screamed.

One of the men held up his hand, making his men stop. He was a rugged man and he walked up to Queen Elizabeth, making her hold on to her daughter even tighter.

The man smirked.

"You must be the Queen." he said.

Elizabeth glared and nodded.

"I am. How dare you intrude here and assault my ladies?" she said.

The man looked her up and down.

"It is true. You are very beautiful." he said.

Queen Elizabeth sighed, annoyed at the comment.

"Who are you?" she asked.

The man took a deep breath.

"I am Jacques DuBois. My men do not intend to hurt you or ladies." he said.

Princess Giovanna scoffed.

"You do not intend to hurt us? Your dog slapped my daughter!" she said.

Jacques sighed.

"Ladies, we do not want to hurt any of you. However, you will be silent." he said.

Princess Giovanna took her four year old daughter and held her close and kept Anais close as well.

Queen Elizabeth sat her daughter down.

"What do you want? The King will be returning shortly." she said.

Jacques smiled.

"Our men have locked the castle up. We do not want to hurt you or your children. They are fine with the lady governess. I want you to hear our demands." he said.

Queen Elizabeth took a step forward, regaining her composure as the Queen.

"What are your demands?" she asked.

Jacques glared at Elizabeth.

"We want the freedom to be free from the rule of a Papist Queen. You will agree that we will live freely." he said.

Queen Elizabeth looked at him, I'm disbelief.

"You all are Hugenots." she said.

Jacques nodded.

"Yes. The decision you make will determine how long you are here and what happens to your ladies." he said, drawing his sword.

Queen Elizabeth eyes opened her eyes and looked at her ladies-in-waiting and her daughter. She had to protect them by any means necessary. She would not let any harm come to them or her eldest child.

13 July 1564
Royal Palace of Olite, Olite, Navarre
Queen Elizabeth of Navarre and Spain's Privy Chambers

The sun was rising on the second day of the situation and Queen Elizabeth sighed, as she looked at her household. Only Princess Giovanna, the six accomplices and Queen Elizabeth herself were awake. They were kept under guard, but they were allowed to eat and bathe.

Princess Giovanna glared at one of the accomplices named Henri. He was the man who slapped her stepdaughter, Lady Anais.

"My brother is the King of Naples and you have us held here as prisoners. Our Queen will never submit and agree to the terms of a Godless heathen." she said.

Henri laughed.

"No one cares at the moment." he said.

Elizabeth looked at Giovanna.

"Giovanna, be silent for now." she said, sternly.

Princess Giovanna sighed and nodded her head.

Suddenly, Lord Jacques opened his eyes and looked at Queen Elizabeth.

"Good Morning, Your Majesty." he said.

Queen Elizabeth sighed.

"It is hardly a good morning, when we are all still trapped in here with you. This is an outrage." she said.

Jacques sighed, as he stood up.

"All you need to do is agree to meet with our leader. We deserve to practice the True Faith." he said.

Queen Elizabeth glared.

"Does your faith tell you to hold innocent women against their will? I am sure the Lord would not approve of this, no matter how you pray to him." she said.

Lady Elizabeth Brandon, who had just woken up, nodded her head.

"Why not go to where you know you will be welcomed? If you are not welcome, then just go somewhere where you will be amongst others like you. We are Catholics here and that is not likely to change." she said innocently.

One of the men stop up and held a sword up to her throat.

"Watch your tongue, you Papist whore. I am sure we can find other uses for that pretty mouth of yours." he said, with a smirk.

Lady Elizabeth had tears fall down her face.

Jacques turned to his accomplice.

"I said we are not doing that! Stand down!" he ordered.

The man sheathed his sword, but kept smirking at Lady Elizabeth.

Queen Elizabeth glared at Jacques.

"Does your leader think this is appropriate? You are holding several young ladies here, one of whom is with child. You also have a child in here, who is terrified. Is this of Christ?" she demanded.

Jacques glared.

"We were forced to do this. We had the liberty to live as we did, before you became Queen. I knew that we would suffer when you usurped the Throne..."

Queen Elizabeth stood to her feet, defiantly.

"SIR, I AM NO USURPER! I INHERITED THE THRONE THROUGH THE BLOOD OF MY LATE GRANDFATHER, KING FERNANDO II OF ARAGON! I AM THE RIGHTFUL QUEEN!" she said.

Jacques stood up and glared at Elizabeth, more.

"If you think that we will go away, you are mistaken. We will keep coming to you and your heirs, untill we have the right to worship the correct way!" he said.

Queen Elizabeth took a step forward and made eye contact with Jacques.

"If you threaten my children, your cause will not succeed. The only contact that I will make with your leader will be presenting you and the rest of your faithless party dead on wooden spikes!" she said, warningly.

Suddenly, the door flew open and several Guards and men of the Court rushed in, brandishing their swords. There were yells and struggles, but finally the abductors were subdued. Queen Elizabeth smiled, as she saw her husband, King Luis, among the men.

She ran to him and hugged him.

"Luis, oh I am glad to see you." she said.

He hugged her back.

"I am sorry it took me so long, sweetheart." he said.

Several of the ladies reunited with their husbands as well. Lord Diego de Mendoza picked his four year old daughter up and grabbed and hugged and kissed Lady Anais and Princess Giovanna, Lord Manuel kissed Lady Elizabeth held her, as she quietly sobbed. Lord Jaime hugged Lady Catalina and inquired about their unborn child.

Infanta Isabel rushed to her father.

"Father!" she yelled, jumping in his arms.

Luis kissed his daughter.

"It is alright, Mi Princesa." he said.

Queen Elizabeth looked at the men, who were now bound and on their knees in front of her. She could feel the anger boil inside of her. These men threatened her and her ladies, some of which were her own flesh and blood.

She looked at Luis.

"The children!" she exclaimed.

He put his hand up.

"Do not worry. They are fine. Lady Ines was with them the entire time. They were just hungry." he said.

Queen Elizabeth sighed, in relief.

The guard in charged bowed to Queen Elizabeth.

"Your Majesty, what would you like done to these prisoners?" he asked.

Queen Elizabeth stepped forward and looked at Jacques on his knees.

"You did not physically harm me and my ladies. I thank you for that. You may return to your leader and tell him that we will travel to Pamplona and the meeting will take place on the seventh day of September. He will release my Palace back to me and there will be no bloodshed. If one crime is committed in the name of your leader before our meeting, you all will burn. Do I make myself clear?" she said.

Jacques nodded.

"Thank you, Your Majesty. You are most merciful for meeting with our leader and allowing me and my men to return." he said.

Queen Elizabeth shook her head.

"No, Monsieur. I am not sure you understand. I said you will return to your leader." she said.

She walked to several of the men.

"Throw these men from the tallest tower in the castle." she said.

The guards grabbed the men and despite the men protesting, they were dragged out.

She approached the guards, who were holding Henri and the man who threatened to violate Lady Elizabeth.

"Boil these two alive." she said.

The guards dragged the two men away, screaming.

She walked back to Jacques, who looked horrified.

"Let this be a message to your leader. If he wants to be civil, I will be civil. However, if he responds to us with violence, he get seven times more violence. You are spared, because you were cordial, despite the situation. However, your other men for the last two days have been barbaric and they will be punished for threatening my ladies and my daughter. You may leave, before my mercy is rescinded." she said.

Jacques looked at the Queen, in shock.

"Yes, Your Majesty." he said.

He was escorted out by her guards.

Queen Elizabeth noticed young man, who looked at exhausted and she immediately recognized who he was

"Lord Luca, you are Arturo Davila's grandson, are you not?" she asked.

He nodded.

"Yes, Your Majesty." he said.

Queen Elizabeth smiled, as she thought of her late Master of the Horse, who had passed not long ago.

King Luis smiled.

"He managed to escape the Castle out of a window and rode on horse back through the night to get reach us. That is how we knew to come to us." he said.

Queen Elizabeth looked at the fifteen year old boy, in disbelief. Luis had been in Barcelona, which was all the way in the Aragon region of Spain.

"You rode through the night? I am ordering you to go to your Chambers and rest. I will have the cook send food and wine to you when you are awake." she said.

Luca Davila nodded and bowed.

"Thank you, Your Majesty." he said.

Suddenly, Lady Anais de Mendoza walked up.

"Thank you, Lord Luca." she said.

He smiled.

"Of course, Lady Anais." he said, as he walked out.

Queen Elizabeth looked at her ladies and her guards and husband.

"We have come through this horrible situation unharmed. We know that these people are a threat. We must all take this seriously. I do not want further bloodshed, but I solemnly promise, as your Queen, that I will keep you safe." she said.

They all looked at their Queen, proudly. They knew that no matter what happened, she would be their guide.

21 July 1564
France

"Your Majesty," someone said, sounding out of breath. King Francis turned around and bid the young man to rise.

"What is it, Jean?" Francis asked him.

Still breathing hard, the young man spoke in scattered words. "Queen Mary. . . baby coming. . . have to get the midwife. . ."

The twenty-year old King of France looked from his wife's page to the door the young man had come through. He nodded, then ran out of the room quickly, leaving Jean to recover from his run across the castle, as he yelled for another guard to fetch the midwife.

As Francis made his way to his wife's confinement chambers, he thought about his mother's labor with his younger twin sisters. He hoped his own wife was not experiencing such an ordeal with their second child, but he knew that childbirth was hard on women at times, even after they had given birth before.

As he reached the corridor leading to her chambers, he heard Mary cry out. He stopped where he stood for a moment, then went to the door and knocked. His mother answered the door, stepping outside, instead of letting him in.

"Francis," Catherine said, "what are you doing here? Mary is in labor."

"I know mother," he replied. "That's why I am here."

"Men are not permitted in the birthing chamber, my son," Catherine reminded him.

Francis shook his head. "I was with her in Scotland, Mother," he told her. "I want to be there when this child comes into the world too."

Catherine laughed. "I told you the Scots were barbarians. That's not how things are done here in France."

"Mother, I do not care how things are done. That is my wife and my child. I will be there so long as Mary wants me to be," Francis said in a tone he did not typically use with his mother. "Now, as your King, I am ordering you to step aside and let me pass."

Catherine looked at her first-born for a moment, judging whether or not he was serious, then she moved, allowing him access to the room. When the pair walked inside, Mary turned to face the doorway. She reached out her hand for Francis, who quickly knelt down beside the bed, taking her hand and kissing it softly.

"I am here, Mary," he said.

The Queen of Scotland and France smiled at her husband, then cried out in pain from her contraction. Francis winced but held his own. As the Queen Mother watched her son, she realized that he was much stronger than his father had been when it came to such things. The midwife entered the room breaking her of her thoughts.

The woman looked from the King and Queen to the Queen Mother, who just shook her head, telling the midwife to leave it be. She washed her hands, then came to the bed to examine the Queen. "Alright, your Majesty," the older woman said. "It's time to push."

Queen Mary nodded. She grasped her husband's hand more firmly, then began to push as she was instructed. Catherine made sure that the basin to bathe the baby was ready, while Mary's ladies took care of their Queen. Within an hour, the midwife announced that she could see the baby's head, and before the sun had started to set in the sky, a newborn's cry pierced the room.

The baby was handed to Catherine, while the midwife saw to Mary herself. Francis kissed his wife's hand. "You did wonderful, sweetheart," he told her. "We have a new baby, and from the sound of it, a healthy one at that." Mary smiled as she caught her breath.

Moments passed that felt like hours, but finally the baby was placed in Mary's arms, clean and wrapped in a blanket. Mary took her child, then looked at her mother-in-law.

"It's a girl, Mary," Catherine told her. "You have a daughter."

Francis smiled at the news. They already had a son, so a daughter was the perfect addition to their family. "What shall we name her?" he asked. Mary looked at him with confusion. She thought he would want to pick the name for their first daughter. "What? I named our son. It's your turn."

Queen Mary thought for a moment. "Marguerite," she said. "I want to call her Marguerite. It's the French version of my grandmother's name, and I want to honor the woman who raised me."

"Princess Marguerite of France," Francis repeated. "I like it." Francis looked at his mother to see if there were any objections. Catherine just smiled at him. With that, the King and Queen of France, along with their newborn daughter, spent the rest of their evening in peace.

25 July 1564
Hofburg Palace, Vienna, Austria

The Dowager Queen of Naples, Catalina, crossed herself, then stood. It was time to return to her brother's chambers. It had been less than a week after her son, the King of Naples, was married that she received an urgent summons to Austria with news that her only remaining sibling, Ferdinand, the Holy Roman Emperor, was dying. Arrangements had been made with all haste and within a few days, she was at his side, along with his wife and some of his children.

In the weeks that followed, Ferdinand had asked her advice on several matters, including who should rule in his stead. Catalina did not want to interfere with the male dominated world of politics, but in private, she felt that she could answer honestly. She told him that there were really only two candidates that the world and the Holy Sea would accept in her opinion: his son, Ferdinand, known within the family as Andy, or King Luis of Spain. He'd asked her which she would choose.

"I don't know exactly," Catalina said openly. "Andy should be your rightful successor, but Luis and Elizabeth are well known, liked, and younger, meaning they would have more time to set policies in place and the people come to understand those policies before another shift in power occurred."

Ferdinand nodded. "Their youth could also be their undoing," he responded. Catalina understood that position. It could be. The young do not always have the experience necessary to guide those who are older without offending them. As a result of their conversation and much prayer, Ferdinand had spent the better part of the morning with his legal advisors, revising his will, and making recommendations that he felt would best serve the continent after he was gone.

Catalina returned to his chambers after her prayers were concluded to spend more time with her brother. She would gladly spend whatever time he had left with him. She had met his new wife, Princess Anna of Denmark, and the two women got along well enough for sisters-in-law who just met. His son, Andy, was also there, along with his youngest daughter from his first marriage, Joanna, who was a beautiful young lady of seventeen and would be married in three years. Catalina did not know what decisions her brother had made concerning the empire, but she knew he would make sure that his widow and children were cared for appropriately.

When she got to his chambers, she found Andy and Anna waiting outside. She looked at them.

"The priest is with him, Aunt," Andy told her. Catalina looked at the doors and nodded. She knew it would probably not be long before her elder brother was called to God. Moments later, the priest stepped outside and nodded at the three of them. They entered the room and took their places around Ferdinand's bed.

He looked at Andy. "Son, when I am gone, you will be installed as Holy Roman Emperor in my place," he told his eldest son. "I have received word from His Holiness that the council are in agreement on this matter, as you are experienced enough to lead the faithful forward in the years to come, and because you are a good man without a blemish to your name. However, be prepared, your cousin, King Luis of Spain will take my place as head of the family. You will still rule Austria and lead the people here, but you will defer to his judgement when it comes to matters concerning multiple nations. He has proven himself as a ruler capable of leading multiple nations, with his wife being the Queen of Navarre included."

Andy looked at his father and nodded. "As you wish, Father," Andy replied.

"You will also arrange the marriages for your siblings who have yet to be betrothed," Ferdinand said, coughing ferociously. "Your step-mother will want to be consulted, but she will go along with what you think is best." He looked at his wife, who nodded. "Anna, my darling, I am so sorry our life together has been shorter than we had hoped, but I was an old man when you agreed to be my wife. You have been a constant joy and a steadfast companion for me in my old age. I thank you for that." He kissed her hand as she knelt down by the bed.

"It's been my pleasure," she said. "You've given me more than I could have ever hoped for when my first fiancée died. I never thought to be a mother or a wife, and you made me both."

Ferdinand smiled at her emotional statement. Then he turned to his sister. "Catalina, we have had a great many years together on this earth, but I will soon leave you for another place. Hopefully, I will be reunited with our parents and siblings soon and know that I will keep watch over you as I did when we were children," he told her.

"I do not want you to go, but I understand that you have no choice," she replied. "I love you, dearest brother."

"And I you, my darling Catalina," he said. "Leave me now. I need to rest."

The three walked out of the room, shutting the doors behind them. Anna and Catalina allowed tears to flow down their faces as they walked arm in arm to the chapel to pray for Ferdinand's soul. Andy didn't know what to do. He thought about joining the ladies, but he decided against it, and instead went to his father's study.

Ferdinand awoke from his nap just before sunset. He turned to the windows and watched as the sun sank lower in the sky. As he turned his head back into the room, he saw his mother standing at the foot of the bed with her arms outstretched. Just as he had when he was a boy, he got up and ran to her, embracing her, then together, mother and son walked into the waiting veil of eternity.

2 August 1564
Ribiera Palace, Lisbon, Portugal
Queen Catarina of Portugal's Privy Chambers

"Mama, why must I study French? I thought I was going to be Queen of Spain." little Infanta Maria said.

Queen Catarina smiled.

"Yes, my darling. You will be Queen of Spain, but you will have to speak to your Ambassadors And one will be from France. You are also learning Latin for that same reason." she said gently.

Seven year old Maria groaned.

"It is boring, Mama." she said.

Catarina's nine year old son and heir, Sebastian, the Prince of Portugal, looked at his younger sister.

"Maria, do not argue with Mother. She is our Queen." he said.

Catarina smiled. Her son was auburn-haired, slim and a little tall for his age. It was also noted that he was pious and was known to favor the teachings of St. Tommaso Aquinas, a thirteenth century Italian Friar. He was his parent's pride and joy.

Maria sighed and continued her French work.

Catarina returned to her correspondence. She hated reading her letters and responding to them, but she knew she had her duties.

Catarina looked up, as the doors to her Chambers opened and her brother-in-law, Lord Manuel de Silva, Prince of Eboli and Duke of Pastrana, walked in.

Catarina smiled.

"Manuel, what brings you here?" she asked.

Manuel bowed.

"I have another letter for you, Your Majesty." he said.

Catarina sighed and took the letter.

"Thank you." she said.

She took the letter and looked at it, curiously.

"It is from Brazil. This must be important. That colony is our most lucrative." she said.

She opened the letter and began reading. She eyed the contents and her bright blue eyes gave away her surprise.

Manual looked at his sister-in-law and Queen.

"Your Majesty?" he asked.

She looked up at him.

"Can you bring my sister here?" she asked.

He nodded and left the room.

Sebastian looked at his mother.

"Is something wrong, Mother?" he asked.

Catarina smiled.

"No, darling. However, I want you and your sister to return to your Chambers while I speak to your Aunt Joanna." she said.

Sebastian nodded and stood.

"Of course. Maria, let us leave." he said.

Maria stood up and followed her brother from their mother's Chambers. Catarina stood and began to pace her Chambers and took a deep breath.

The doors opened and Infanta Joanna, Princess of Eboli and Duchess of Pastrana, walked in.

"What is wrong, Catarina?" she asked.

Catarina sighed.

"I am sorry to worry you. Are you well?" she asked.

Joanna smiled and placed a hand on her stomach.

"Yes. The sickness has passed." she said.

Catarina smiled. Joanna was currently expecting her third child and she was to give birth in February..

Catarina sighed.

"Read this, Joanna." she said.

Joanna took the letter and began to read it, slowly and carefully.

"The Cabral Family wants Maria's hand in marriage for their son, Pedro? The Duke is our Viceroy for Brazil, is he not?" she asked.

Catarina nodded her head.

"Yes. Lord Pedro is now his father's heir. His eldest son, Lord Henrique, died two years ago in a smallpox outbreak with his wife and his children. Lord Pedro needs to marry now. I am nervous about this potential match. The Cabrals are wealthy landowners in Brazil. The elder Cabral was well-respected in Father's reign. I am nervous about her marrying a man that could help get with his financial backing. She could also have children from this marriage and I do not want them to be a thorn in the side of my son, like Maria has been for me." she said.

Joanna grabbed her sister, gently.

"A solution can be given. There has to be a way to neutralize this, so her marriage and possible future children will not be a threat to your reign." she said.

Catarina sat in a chair and began to think. She had to think of something to secure her son's future. She was Portugal's first Queen, but she knew that many did not like a woman ruling. Her decision would be watched by everyone.

Catarina looked at her sister.

"I know how we can all prosper from this marriage." she said.

18 August 1564
Château de Cognac, Cognac, Nouvelle-Aquitane
The Banquet Hall

Everyone was in a merry mood. The wedding had been a spectacular affair. The son of the Duke of Aquitaine, Lord Julian Pole, seemed very taken with his new bride, Lady Christina Oldenburg, who's late grandfather was King of Denmark and Norway, before he was overthrown.

Lord Alex Dumane, the Duke of Lautrec and his wife, Lady Jeanne, both smiled, as they took sios from their goblets of wine. They both had been asked to escort the eighteen years old Lady Christina to Aquitaine, along with her parents.

Lady Jeanne smiled at her husband.

"Alex, this is beautiful." she said.

Alex nodded.

"I agree. They certainly did not spare expense for this wedding." he said.

Suddenly, an attractive woman in her thirties walked up. She was Lady Louise Pole nee Dumane, the Duchess of Aquitaine and Dowager Baroness of Elbeuf and the stepmother of the groom. She had brown hair, bright blue eyes and was dressed in a beautiful dark red gown, which showed off the fact that she was visibly pregnant.

Alex smiled.

"My dear sister, how are you?" he said, hugging her.

Lady Louise sighed.

"I am tired. My husband wanted a lavish wedding for Julian. This is my last large gathering before I take to my Chamber." she said.

Lady Jeanne smiled.

"I understand the luxury. Julian is the only son that Duke Thomas has." she said.

Lady Louise smiled and rubbed her swollen stomach.

"I am hoping to change that, dear sister." she said.

Louise had married the Duke of Aquitaine, Lord Thomas Pole, in 1557, after her husband died several years earlier. She joined the household of Queen Elizabeth of Navarre, who arranged her marriage Thomas. He inherited the Aquitaine Dukedom, due to his Plantagenet blood and after informing King Henry VIII of a plot to destroy ships in the Royal Navy, after the King unjustly raised taxes. Thomas was beaten severely by the conspirators and nearly died from his injuries, but managed to reach the Castle and inform the King before collapsing at his feet. He was in and out of consciousness for four days, but he recovered. However, he was left with a permanent limp and King Henry named him Duke of Aquitaine to thank him and also do he could support his wife. When his first wife, Lady Elizabeth, died in childbirth with a stillborn daughter, he was left with only two children at the time, which were seven year old Julian and two year old Margaret. Seven years later, Queen Elizabeth reached out to her distant cousin, Thomas, and presented Lady Louise as a second wife for him. He accepted and the two became very close and she was a wonderful stepmother to his two children. She and Thomas also had a five year old daughter, Lady Charlotte Pole and they had a stillborn son as well. Louise was praying that her unborn child was a boy, as she knew being thirty-three years old, she may not have many more chances.

Lady Louise looked around.

"I do not see Father. Is he not with you?" she asked.

Alex sighed and shook his head.

Louise took a deep breath.

"I did not think so. I did not even recieve a letter when I gave birth to Charlotte or when I lost my son." she said.

Alex held his sister's hand.

"I am sorry. Our stepmother is with child again and I think he did not want to leave her. He does send his love." he said.

Louise scoffed.

"A bad smell also travels in the wind." she said.

Alex had to keep himself from laughing, when Lord Thomas Pole, the Duke of Aquitaine and Louise's husband, walked up, leaning slightly on his walking cane.

"Are you well, sweetheart?" Louise asked.

Lord Thomas nodded.

"I am well, darling. Julian and his bride are going to retire for the evening. Would you mind helping Christina prepare for the consummation?" he asked.

Louise smiled.

"Absolutely." she said.

Lady Jeanne stepped forward.

"I will help her as well." she said.

Louise smiled and the two women walked up to Lady Christina and her mother, Infanta Maria, Duchess of Viseu.

Louise smiled at them.

"I do not mean to interrupt you, but we are going to assist you tonight." she said.

Lady Christina smiled at her stepmother in-law.

"Thank you." the eighteen year old said gratefully.

Louise and Lady Christina walked their way to get Chambers. Infanta Maria smiled and looked at Lady Jeanne.

"My little girl." she said proudly.

Jeanne smiled.

"How do you feel about leaving her here in France?" she said.

Maria sighed.

"It is hard, but I know she's not far from home. I love that my children will not be far. I still have little ones at home as well and two granddaughters." she said.

Jeanne nodded. It was hard to believe that Infanta Maria was a grandmother. Despite being forty-three years old, she was extremely beautiful. The Portuguese Infantas were all known for their beautiful, even into their old age.

"One day, my little Catherine will have to be married. I am not looking forward to that right now." she said.

Maria smiled.

"Our daughters will make their mark in the world. Let us go to Christina. Hee journey begins tonight. I want to thank you for escorting my daughter here. My husband and I were grateful for the company." she said.

Jeanne smiled.

"It was my pleasure, Maria." she said.

29 August 1564
Ribiera Palace, Lisbon, Portugal
The Royal Council Chambers.

The various high born nobles gathered in the Council Chambers, waiting for Queen Catarina and her husband, King Juan, to arrive. They were to address several things, but the one thing they all wanted to know was what would become of the Infanta Maria, the Dowager Princess of Portugal. She had been imprisoned for nearly one year and everyone was wondering what would become of her.

Finally, the doors opened and King Juan and Queen Catarina walked in. All the Council members stood up and acknowledged their Queen. Her chair was pulled out.

Queen Catarina stood at the head of the table.

"Good morning, everyone. You may be seated." she said.

All of the men sat down.

Queen Catarina looked at her Council. She took a deep breath.

"My Noble Lords, I have summoned you all here to let you know I have reached a decision about my late brother's widow." she said.

The Duke of Braganza nodded, her cousin, nodded.

"No disrespect, Your Majesty, but I am glad that you have finally reached a decision about the traitor." he said.

Catarina nodded and she turned to face everyone, including her husband. He did not even know her decision about Maria.

Catarina cleared her throat.

"I have decided to spare Maria's life, on the condition that she agree to permanent banishment and a marriage that I have prepared for her." she said.

The entire Council erupted in noise, much to Catarina's annoyance. She held her hand up, to silence them. She nodded at her uncle, Infante Eduardo, Duke of Guimares. He was her last surviving uncle and was her most faithful ally, along with his family.

He stood up.

"Your Majesty, the Dowager Princess is of our blood and is the widow of our most beloved late Prince of Portugal. However, her marriage could be an advantage for her and any possible issue of her marriage. Would it not be better for the Lady to take Holy Vows?" he asked.

Queen Catarina shook her head.

"I do not intend to use the Church as a prison for someone who is not devout in living the life of those who take the Vows. This is a matter of country, not the Church." she said.

Her uncle sat down. The Duke of Braganza stood up.

"The woman should die for her crimes, Your Majesty. It is very simple. She committed treason and nearly took the life of the little Infanta Isabella. How is a new marriage going to show her guilt?" he asked.

Catarina looked at her cousin.

"Her banishment is the punishment, not the marriage. The marriage is just security and is with someone loyal. The marriage will also come with very strict conditions." she said.

The young Duke sat down.

Queen Catarina looked at her husband.

"Your Highness? What say you?" she asked.

Juan sighed.

"The woman is disturbed and what she attempted to do to our little daughter angers me. However, I do agree with you." he said.

The elderly Duke of Cadaval scoffed.

"The Spaniard would agree with something that goes against tradition, especially when we all know that he had relations with the traitor." he said.

Juan glared at the old man.

"I am Her Majesty's most humble servant. She will make the decision and I will support my Queen and my wife in whatever decision she makes." he said.

Catarina cleared her throat

"Gentlemen, this is the decision I have made. This is not simple for me. I am a mother and the thought of losing my daughter to that woman is abhorrent to me. However, as Queen and a Christian woman, I must show mercy. I will take my leave of you." she said.

She stood up and all of the men stood and she took Juan's hand and they both left the Council Chambers.

Juan smiled at his wife.

"You did amazing, sweetheart. It seems assured now." he said, as they walked back to the Royal Apartments.

Catarina sighed.

"We have just begun. The hardest part is yet to happen." she said.

7 September 1564
Royal Palace of Olite, Olite, Navarre
Queen Elizabeth of Navarre and Spain's Council Room

Queen Elizabeth, King Luis and get entire Council were sitting in her Council Chambers and talking to Lord Jean-Pierre Boucher and his people, which included Lord Jacques. Queen Elizabeth were reading terms of these men. Her original plans to travel to Pamplona had to be changed, due to the storms that were sweeping the lands and she absolutely refused to put her courtiers in danger. However, she still made sure that the residents of Pamplona received their weekly and she even included fish and beef to make sure they did not starve, especially if the harvest would fail due to the excessive rains. She wanted to come to peace, but did not expect to do this on her thirty-first birthday.

Lord Jean-Pierre cleared his throat.

"Do you have any objections to our terms, Your Majesties?" he asked.

King Luis glared at the man.

"You should be thankful that you are sitting here and not rotting in the Dungeons." he said.

Jean-Pierre glared at him back, but Queen Elizabeth sat the document down.

"I do not understand. If you wish to practice your faith, why not travel to the Empire? You will have the freedom to worship the way you want there. The Holy Roman Emperor is bound by the Prince-Electors to honor those territories that are not Catholic." she said.

Jean-Pierre scoffed and King Luis stood up.

"How dare you scoff at your Queen!" he exclaimed.

Queen Elizabeth gently touched his arm and he say back down.

Jean-Pierre cleared his throat.

"Why should we leave? You may be Queen, but this is not your homeland." he said.

Queen Elizabeth glared at him.

"I will remind you that this meeting does not have to happen. I am showing you kindness by entertaining this situation." she said. We have your terms. You may take your leave, while my Council and I discuss them." she said.

Jean-Pierre and his men stood up and bowed to Elizabeth and Luis and they proceeded to leave the room.

Lord Diego de Mendoza looked at Elizabeth.

"Your Majesty, you can not be entertaining this. We follow the True Faith." he said.

Lord Gaston Foix sighed.

"Lord Mendoza, these people are used to the late traitor King. They do not like the Queen and her loyalty to Rome." he said.

Lord Alex Dumane scoffed.

"Navarre has done nothing but prosper for the last ten years. The revenue from the New World of Spain has increased income for the middling sort. The Queen has given them work." he said.

The Council began to murmur and give various opinions to the situation. Queen Elizabeth bit her knuckle, as she began to think on what to do.

She held her hand up and everyone grew silent.

She took a deep breath.

"I hear what everyone is saying. I am a devout Catholic and I believe in the True Faith. However, I am Queen and my subjects must be treated equally. A person and their beliefs should be left up to their own conscience." she said.

The Council grew louder, which included her husband Luis. He looked furious, as well.

Queen Elizabeth stood to her feet.

"Gentlemen, please. I stand by our Catholic Faith and I will defend it with everything that is in me and a heretic will have no place in my Court. However, we must accept people who are different. We all pray to God. Is that not enough?" she asked.

The men began to murmur amongst themselves.

Lord Diego looked at his Queen.

"We respect you, Your Majesty. The heretics won't be in Court and won't make laws." he said.

Suddenly, King Luis stood up.

*Everyone leave now. I wish to speak to the Queen alone." he said.

The entire Council stood to their feets, bowed to Queen Elizabeth and left the Council Chambers.

King Luis looked at his wife.

"Elizabeth, our ancestors have defended our Faith for years. Isabel and Fernando were the Catholic Monarchs. How could you forget their legacy?" he asked.

Elizabeth looked at her husband.

"I am not forgetting anything. We will enhance their legacy. We will be merciful." she said.

Luis glared at her.

"You wish to show mercy that held you and our daughter hostage? You think that is the solution? Well, I won't allow it in my Kingdoms and won't allow my heir to inherit a land full of heretics." he said.

Elizabeth stood to her feet.

"I will not allow my heir to inherit a Kingdom stained with the blood of my subjects, just because two sides can not come to a mutual understanding and agreement. I am the Queen of Navarre, Luis. I have made my decision." she said.

Luis faced her directly and bowed, visibly angry

"Well, I shall take my leave of you, Your Majesty. I shall see you at your banquet tonight." he said, before turning to leave.

Elizabeth ran to the door.

"Luis!" she cried.

When he did not return, Elizabeth sat down in a chair and took several breaths. She silently prayed that her move to be a good Queen to her people did not cost her the happiness in her marriage.

10 September 1564
Leeds Castle, Kent, England
Lady Rose Tudor, Baroness of Windsor's Bedchamber

Lady Rose, the Baroness of Windsor smiled, as she looked at her new residence. She had decided to sell Windsor Castle back to King Henry and she received twenty-five thousand pounds for it. However, her brother still permitted her to use the title Baroness of Windsor and her annual income of five thousand pounds a year would still be given to her. She was now a very wealthy woman, but she was still very modest. She and her husband, Lord John Tudor, decided to purchase Leeds Castle, a country estate in Kent.

Her door opened and her husband, Lord John, walked in.

She smiled.

"John, what are you doing here? You know I am in confinement." she said.

John smiled and kissed his wife and touched her swollen midsection. Rose was currently expecting their fourth child. She was showing that she had no problems having children, as she had only given birth to Lord Henry Tudor sixteen months ago.

"I know, I just miss you so much and so do the children." he said.

Rose smiled.

"How are my angels?" she asked.

He laughed.

"They are well. Edmund is perfecting his French and he is doing well. Little Katrina is loving the doll that I gave her and little Henry is walking so much and he is attempting to talk." he said.

Rose chuckled.

"I can not wait until I can see them again." she said.

John kissed her hand.

"I love you so much." he said.

She smiled.

"I love you too, sweetheart." she said.

"Have we decided on a name yet?" he asked.

Rose shook her head.

"No, darling. We do not know if it is a boy or girl." she said.

She suddenly felt a pinch in her stomach and her waters break.

She took a deep breath.

"It is my time, John." she said.

John stood up.

"I will get your midwife." he said, as he ran out of the room.

Nine hours later...

Lady Rose smiled, as she held her newborn son. She now had three health boys and her beautiful little girl. Her new baby was beautiful. He had his father's brown hair and blue eyes.

She kissed his cheek.

"My sweet baby boy." she said.

The door opened and John walked in.

Rose scoffed.

"John, I am still in confinement." she said.

John shrugged his shoulders.

"I just wanted to see our son." he said.

Rose smiled.

"You would see him when he is baptized in three days." she said.

John shook his head and took the newborn from this mother.

"I wanted to see him now and we can give him his name."

Rose sighed.

"Very well." she said.

John smiled.

"How do you feel about Thomas? I want to name him after my late mother's father, Thomas Boleyn. I never met him. He died when I was only three." he said.

Rose nodded and smiled.

"Little Thomas Tudor it is, then. Your sister, Charlotte, can be the godmother." she said.

John smiled.

"Thank you. I love you so much." he said.

Rose touched his cheek.

"I love you too, sweetheart." she said.

21 September 1564
Sintra Palace, Lisbon, Portugal
The Throne Room

Queen Catarina and King Juan were sitting on their Thrones. They had finally returned to Sintra Palace for the autumn and winter months. Catarina loved this Palace at this time of year, especially when hunting took place. However, she was waiting to give her judgement on Maria's fate, as she had finally made a decision.

Catarina snapped out of her thoughts, as she heard footsteps approach. She let out breath go when she saw it was her mother, her sister, Joanna, Princess of Eboli and hee mother's eidest sister, Isabella, Dowager Marquessa de Moya.

Isabella curtsied to her niece.

"I humbly thank you for your hospitality and your kindness towards me during my time at Court." she said.

Catarina nodded her head.

"You are most welcome. You are my aunt twice over, as you are my mother's sister and the widow of the late King Manuel, my uncle." she said.

Isabella cringed inwardly. Although it had been over thirty years since his death, she hated hearing the name. Isabella bowed and went to stand next to her sister, the Queen Mother.

After several moments, several guards walked in, with Infanta Maria. Everyone could see that eleven months being in prison had taken its toll on her. While still having her good looks, she had visibly lost weight and looked like she had not slept properly in months. She also looked visibly weak.

She managed to bow.

"Your Majesties." she said.

Queen Catarina sighed.

"Infanta Maria. I have summoned you here, because I have finally reached a decision on your fate." she said.

Maria sighed. She was prepared to lose her life and was just waiting to hear the sentence.

Queen Catarina glared at her cousin and sister-in-law.

"You may live." she said.

Maria and her mother both took audible sighs of relief.

"Thank you for showing mercy, Your Majesty. I do not deserve your kindness." she said.

Queen Catarina held her hand up.

"Do not excite yourself. There are several conditions for you to follow." she said.

Maria looked at Queen Catarina.

"What are these conditions?" she asked.

Catarina took a deep breath.

"You will carry the title Dowager Princess of Portugal, but none of its benefits. Your income, property and estate that my late brother left you in his Will is being confiscated by the Crown. The only thing you are permitted to keep is the gifts and jewels that my brother gifted you before his untimely death." she said.

Maria looked at the young Queen, in horror.

"Your Majesty, that is everything I own. If you do this, I will be destitute. I beg you to leave me some compensation." she said.

Queen Catarina shook head.

"Absolutely not. I can not have you funding any rebellions or causing anymore trouble in my realm. You will not be destitute. You actually will be quite wealthy, due to your new husband." she said.

Maria blinked her eyes, in surprise.

"My husband? I did not agree to any marriage." she said.

Queen Catarina grabbed the arms of her Throne, in slight frustration.

"You will, if you wish to continue to live. The marriage is befitting for your station. You will be marrying Pedro Alvarez Cabral, the Duke of La Paz. He is the grandson of the navigator, Pedro Cabral, who discovered the colony of Brazil." she said.

Maria looked at her, horrified.

"You are sending me to colony? I am a Princess of Royal blood, not some mere commoner. You are sitting on a Throne that should be mine." she said.

Catarina stood up.

"You will do as I tell you and watch how you address your Queen. I see that your time being imprisoned has rendered you mad, just like your mother." she sneered.

Suddenly, Maria stepped forward and spat in Catarina's face, much to everyone's disgust and shock. One of Catarina's ladies-in-waiting came forward and wiped the saliva off her face.

Catarina stepped forward and slapped Maria across her face, her ring connecting sharply with Maria's nose. Maria cried out, as she fell to the floor.

Catarina stood over her.

"Since you do not agree, I hereby condemn you to die by burning tomorrow morning. You property and income has now been confiscated by the Crown. Guards, return the prisoner to her cell." she said.

The guards grabbed Maria by her arms and dragged her out of the room, with her screaming for them to release her.

Isabella came forward to Queen Catarina.

"Your Majesty, you promised my daughter clemency. Please do not do this. I am a widow, who has lost many children. Please do not pierce my heart again." she begged.

Catarina glared at her aunt.

"Your daughter attempted to kill my little Isabella in her cradle. I have done nothing, but show mercy to her. Your daughter is fortunate she was not in anyone's realm, as her head would have been separated from her miserable shoulders. My mercy for her is no more. She will die tomorrow." she said.

Isabella fell to her knees.

"NO! NOT AGAIN!" she cried, as she laid herself at Catarina's feet.

Catarina held her hand out and Juan stood up and took her hand and they walked around a sobbing Isabella. Infanta Joanna and Catarina's ladies-in-waiting followed their sister and Queen, respectively.

Mary, the Queen Mother, walked over to her elder sister and put her hand on Isabella's back to get

Isabella shrugged her off.

"LEAVE ME!" she cried out.

Mary took a deep breath and she turned and walked away, leaving Isabella to cry alone.

Queen Catarina of Portugal's Bedchamber

One of Catarina's ladies-in-waiting was brushing her long hair and helping prepare her for bed.

Juan was in their bed and took a deep breath.

"It was a long day." he said.

Catarina sighed.

"Yes, it was. I can not believe i had to do that. Do you think I was wrong?" she asked.

Juan scoffed.

"Not at all. You are a Queen and you have been more than generous." he said.

Catarina sighed.

"The right decision does not always feel right. Well, tomorrow we will never have to worry about her again." she said.

Suddenly, there was a knock at door.

Catarina looked over at it.

"Come in." she said.

The door opened and Infanta Joanna, Princess of Eboli, walked in.

"Your Majesty, I am so sorry to disturb you this late at night, but there is word from the dungeons that Maria wants to see you immediately." she said.

Juan looked at his sister-in-law, in confusion.

"What else does she have to say?" he asked.

Catarina sighed and stood up.

"There is only one way to find out. Tell the guards to escort her back to the Throne Room. I want Mother and Aunt Isabella present as well." she said.

Joanna nodded and left the room.

Catarina held her arms out, as her ladies put her robe on and Juan decided to grab his robe.

Catarina looked at her husband.

"I wonder what this is about." she said.

Juan shrugged and they both left the room

The Throne Room

Catarina and Juan were sitting on their Thrones, yet again. Joanna and her husband stood nearby her and the Queen Mother and Isabella was next to her, with a tear stained face. She had been sobbing nonstop.

Suddenly, the guards brought Maria back into the room.

Catarina took a deep breath.

"You wanted to see me?" she asked.

Maria sank to her knees.

"I do not want to die, Your Majesty. I am begging you." she said.

Catarina raised her eyebrows.

"If you want to live, you will do as I say. Why your change of heart?" she asked.

Maria sighed.

"The Lord will not forgive me, if my death causes my mother's death. I do not want to cause her anymore pain. As she said, she has lost many of my siblings. I agree to all of your demands of me, as my Queen." she said.

Catarina stood to her feet.

"Maria, you are free from your imprisonment. You will set sail for Brazil in ten days. You can share an apartment with your mother untill you are leaving Court. You will be given two gowns. Aunt Isabella, show your daughter to your suite of rooms and get her bathed. She can have food from the kitchen before bed. Goodnight everyone. You are all dismissed." she said.

She and Juan stood and made their way back to the Royal Apartments. Joanna followed them as well. The Queen Mother nodded at her elder sister.

Isabella hugged Maria.

"Thank you, Lord. Thank you." she said, happily.

1 October 1564
Sintra Palace, Lisbon, Portugal
The Courtyard

Maria stood and took a deep breath. She was departing for Brazil today. She was leaving her homeland and her family for a man that she did not know. However, she had no choice. It was the only way she could avoid the fire.

Maria's mother, Isabella, Dowager Marquessa de Moya, walked up to her.

"Everything is nearly ready, darling." she said, with a sad smile.

Maria sighed.

"I can not believe that I am being sent away. I have no money and no property. I am going into this marriage being solely dependent on this man." she said.

Isabella sighed.

"I would rather see you without money than without your head or tied to a stake." she said.

Maria sighed, as she looked at the ring on her finger. She had been married by proxy three days ago and she was now styled as the Duchess of La Paz.

"I wish I was not leaving you, Mother." she said.

Isabella nodded.

"I wish the same. However, it is the Queen's decision. Women in our station in life must marry where we are told. I told you this nearly ten years ago, before you married Duarte." she said.

Maria nodded.

"Duarte was different, Mother. We fell in love. He was good to me. I was happy." she said.

Isabella took her daughter's hand.

"How do you know you will not find that happiness again? It could also be better this time. You may even have children." she said.

Maria took a breath.

"I know. The Duke needs children." she said.

Suddenly, Infanta Joanna and her husband walked up, followed by two young ladies.

"Maria, everything is almost ready for your departure. However, the Queen has assigned Lady Beatriz and Lady Ana to be your new ladies-in-waiting. Your husband's income will cover their expenses." she said.

Maria nodded at the two younger ladies.

"Welcome to my service. I hope you will find happiness in my service." she said.

The two young ladies curtsied.

One of the guards walked up and nodded and Isabella teared up.

"It is time to go, darling." she said.

Maria took another breath and hugged and kissed her mother, trying not to cry. She looked at Joanna and bowed to her, but did not say anything else.

She turned to her ladies-in-waiting.

"Ladies, let us go." she said.

She turned and began walking to her litter. She was helped in and she took her seat. Her two ladies sat across from her. When they were all seated, the litter took off.. Maria looked out the window and saw her mother waving. She let her tears fall, knowing this could be the last time she ever saw her mother again.

15 October 1564
Hampton Court Palace, London, England
Queen Lillian of England's Bedchamber

"I hope this storm does not last too much longer." Queen Lillian said.

Her ladies-in-waiting agreed, as another crack of thunder was heard.

Lady Charlotte Howard nodded.

"These are the most storms I have seen. I heard from my husband that the Thames is threatening to overflow." she said.

Lady Mary Brandon, the Duchess of Suffolk, looked at her older sister.

"Lottie, stop scaring the Queen." she chided.

Lady Catherine Knollys née Carey walked over with a blanket and wrapped the blanket around Queen Lillian's shoulders.

"Ladies, do not quarrel in front of the Queen." she said.

Queen Lillian smiled.

"They are fine, Lady Knollys." she said.

Lady Charlotte smirked.

"Our cousin is always scolding, as if we were one of her many children." she said.

Lady Catherine glared at her younger cousin, but then smiled. She and her husband, Lord Francis Knollys, had been happily married for twenty-four years and she had given birth to sixteen children and fourteen we're still alive, ranging from three year old Lady Margaret to twenty-three year old Lady Mary Stalker.

"Charlotte, I am not trying to be your mother." she said.

Charlotte smirked and chuckled.

"Exactly, your daughter is over there, with Princess Mary." she said, gesturing towards the other side of the room.

Lady Catherine smiled and walked over to her daughter, twenty-one Lady Lettice Devereux nèe Knollys, Viscountess of Hereford.

"Are you well, darling?" Lady Catherine asked.

Lady Lettice smiled and rubbed her swollen stomach. She was expecting her second child with her husband, Lord Robert Devereux, Viscount of Hereford. They currently only had a daughter, Lady Penelope Devereux, who was only a year old.

"I am well, Mother." she said.

Queen Lillian stood up and walked over to the women and her daughter.

"I hope my daughter is not troubling you, Lady Devereux." she said.

Lady Lettice smiled.

"Not at all, Your Majesty." she said.

Princess Mary smiled up at her mother. At nearly six years old, she was spending more time at Court with her mother and her household. She was a precious sight at Court.

"Lady Lettice is teaching me how to draw, Mama." she said.

Queen Lillian caressed her long brown hair.

"Oh, is she? You are doing well, darling. You are very talented, Lady Devereux." she said.

Lady Lettice smiled.

"Thank you, Your Majesty." she said.

Suddenly, she felt a pain in her belly and she caught her breath. She looked at her mother.

"Mother, it is my time." she said.

Queen Lillian took Princess Mary by the hand.

"Lady Devereux, you are excused. Lady Knollys, take her to her Chambers and summon the midwife." she said.

Lady Knollys and took her daughter by the hand and they walked out.

Later that night

Queen Lillian was being prepared for bed by Lady Mary Brandon, Duchess of Suffolk.

"Is there any news on Lady Devereux and her birth?" she asked Lady Mary.

Lady Mary shook her head.

"Not yet, Your Majesty. I know she will pull through. She is a healthy young woman." she said.

Queen Lillian chuckled.

"Do not forget beautiful. She turns many heads at Court." she said.

Lady Mary snickered.

"That is very true." she said.

Queen Lillian smiled.

"She is very good with little Mary." she said.

Lady Mary smiled.

"She loves children. She is always writing to Chartley Castle, inquiring about her little Penelope." she said.

Suddenly, the door opened and Lady Catherine Knollys walked in.

"I am here, Your Majesty. I can help you prepare for bed." she said.

Queen Lillian smiled.

"First, how is Lady Lettice?" she asked.

Lady Catherine smiled.

"She has given birth to another daughter. They have decided to call her Dorothy. Her husband was a little disappointed that it was not a boy, but he was reassured that sons will follow." she said.

Queen Lillian smiled.

"Very true. God bless your daughter and little Dorothy." she said.

24 October 1564
Royal Palace of Olite, Olite, Navarre
The Throne Room

Queen Elizabeth sat on her Throne, awaiting the Hugenots to come to her. She had reached a final decision on the religious problem in her realm. She hoped that her solution would satisfy all involved.

She looked to her left, which is where her husband, King Luis of Spain and Duke of Najera sat. Elizabeth gave a small look of sadness. She and Luis had now been married for fourteen years and their marriage was known for being very happy and loving. However, for the last six weeks he had barely spoken to her. He was very angry about her willingness to negotiate with the Hugenots. He did not even want to know her final decision and he had not shared her bed since that night. She missed his embrace and touch and hoped that her decision would heal the rift in their marriage.

Lord Jean-Pierre and his men walked in and bowed to Queen Elizabeth.

"Your Majesty, thank you for seeing us again." he said.

Queen Elizabeth nodded.

"You are welcome. I will not delay this any further." she said.

Lord Jean-Pierre nodded.

"We are waiting to hear your terms on everything that we have talked about, Your Majesty." he said.

Queen Elizabeth cleared her throat.

"I want you all to know that the faith of Navarre will not change. We are Catholic and we will always be Catholic. However, I will not allow you to be punished by death for what you do in your homes. When you are public, you will adhere to the Catholic laws." she said.

Luis looked at his wife and found himself, smiling to himself. He did not expect to hear this.

Lord Jean-Pierre looked at Elizabeth.

"Your Majesty, we deserve freedom." he said.

Queen Elizabeth nodded.

"Yes and you are granted that freedom, just in your home. I want to see if it is possible that we can all coexist. We are all Christians and follow the Lord. You will not be punished for your Faith, however you will be punished for going against the Catholic Faith. You are all men of substance and wealth. You may employ your own Chaplains to worship. I will give you this chance to follow my terms. However, be warned that if anyone breaks the law, regardless of Faith, you will face my wrath and will be punished to the full extent of the laws I have set. Am I understood?" she asked sternly.

Lord Jean-Pierre looked around and then back Queen Elizabeth. He could tell that this Queen would not budge. He did not like her terms, but the look on this Queen's face, he could tell that she was very serious.

He nodded at his men and they all bowed to Elizabeth.

"We agree, Your Majesty." he said.

Queen Elizabeth nodded and smiled.

"Very well. I am glad that we can reach an understanding. I will take my leave of you now." she said.

Queen Elizabeth and King Luis stood up and joined hands and made their way out of the Throne Room, while their subjects bowed and curtsied, as they walked past them, with Elizabeth's ladies-in-waiting following close behind them. They all made it to Queen Elizabeth's Bedchamber.

Luis looked at his wife's ladies.

"You are all excused until supper." he said.

The ladies all nodded and left, without questions.

Elizabeth looked at Luis.

"Is something wrong?" she asked.

Suddenly, he passionately kissed her and held her against him. Elizabeth moaned into his kiss and melted in his embrace.

Luis stopped and looked at her.

"I have missed you and I am sorry that I doubted you. You were brilliant and you stood by our Faith." he said

Elizabeth smiled and continued to kiss him and within moments, they both were nude and still kissing on Elizabeth's bed and they made love the entire afternoon.

16 November 1564
Hofburg Palace, Vienna, Austria
Isabella of Austra, Holy Roman Empress's Privy Chamber

Isabella of Austria and Spain sighed, as she continued her correspondence. She and her husband of seventeen years, Ferdinand, known as Andy within the family, were officially crowned as Holy Roman Emperor and Empress by Pope Pius IV on the eleventh day of October, three months after the death of her uncle and father-in-law, Ferdinand I, Holy Roman Emperor. Isabella was now the wife of the most powerful man in Christendom.

The door opened to Isabella's Chambers and she looked up and her stepmother in-law, Anne of Denmark, Empress Dowager.

Empress Isabella smiled and she rose to hug her.

"How are you?" she asked.

Dowager Empress Anne sighed.

"I miss my Ferdinand." she said, sadly.

Empress Isabella nodded.

"His presence is greatly missed. Will you still reside here at the Imperial Court?" she asked.

Dowager Empress Anne shook her head.

"No. It is your turn to be the Empress. I just want to focus on my children. My little Judith is still an infant and Christoph is very young and I want to focus on them. My other children have started their education. I also know that my husband said in his Will that my Helena and Joanna are left in my custody as well. I would prefer to take them to Augarten Palace, since it was left to me in my husband's Will." she said.

Empress Isabella nodded her head.

"Joanna is seventeen years old and her betrothal is finalized. However, Helena will most likely stay with you permanently." Isabella said.

Dowager Empress Anne sighed. Her late husband had been worried about his fourteenth child, Archduchess Helena, and her overall health. She was beautiful, but delicate. However, due to the concerns of her health, Ferdinand I decided that Helena was unfit to be married and said she can retire to a convent of her choice or she could remain in the Court as an unmarried Archduchess.

"I take it that Andy has no wish to let Helena marry? She's already twenty-one years old." she said.

Empress Isabella shook her head.

"He says that he does not want to send his sister die in childbirth, like his late mother." she said.

Dowager Empress Anne nodded.

"I will take Helena and Joanna with me, along with Christoph and Judy. They will always be welcome to reside in my household." she said.

Empress Isabella smiled.

"I am sure that my husband, the Emperor, will appreciate that." she said.

Dowager Empress Anne smiled..

"Will my Rupert and Isabella's education be solely at Court?" she asked.

Empress Isabella nodded.

"Yes. Rupert will be educated with my Maximillian and Isabella will be with my Elisabeth. They will be prepared for their roles. You will be able to see them whenever you want." she said.

Dowager Empress Anne smiled. Her late husband had said in his Will that their two eidest children together would be beginning their education and their care would be handled by others. She trusted that her stepson and his wife would look over her son and daughter, despite the fact that they had thirteen children of their own. She was grateful for them and was especially happy that Andy honored his father's Will and did not want to see her and her children destitute.

22 November 1564
Hampton Court, London, England
Queen Lillian of England's Privy Chamber

Queen Lillian was reading one of her favorite books, as her ladies kept her company.

Lady Charlotte looked up at her Queen.

"Your Majesty, how do you feel about your sister being the Holy Roman Empress?" she asked.

Queen Lillian smiled.

"She seems to like her position. She has grown to love Vienna." she said.

Lady Mary Brandon, Duchess of Suffolk, looked up from her sewing.

Is it true that she has a large family?" she asked.

Queen Lillian nodded her head.

"Yes. Isabella has thirteen children." she said.

Lady Mary winced.

"I thought having my three children waa bad enough." she said.

The ladies laughed among themselves.

Queen Lillian held her hand up.

"Now, we must remember it is our duty to have progeny." she said.

Lady Charlotte Howard smirked.

"Yes, although I would love my George to go through confinement at least once and then maybe he will appreciate my efforts on having our four children." she said.

Lady Mary slapped her older sister's hand playfully.

"Lottie, stop that nonsense. George is a wonderful husband to you." she said.

Queen Lillian looked at her ladies, until she saw Lady Katherine Dudley neé Grey. The twenty-five year old was the Dowager Countess of Leicester and the mother to the young Earl of Leicester, little Lord Robert Dudley, her seven year old son with her late husband.

Queen Lillian smiled at her young lady.

"Lady Dudley, how is your son?" she asked.

Lady Katherine smiled.

"He is well. His tutors inform me weekly in his studies. He is already becoming fluent in French and Latin and his writing has improved." she said.

Lady Charlotte smiled.

"I am sure you are proud. Will you not remarry and provide the young Earl with younger siblings? It has been years since your husband died." she said.

Lady Mary looked at her sister, in anger.

"Charlotte!" she said.

Lady Katherine smiled at her distant cousin.

"It is no need to be angry. I have thought about it, but nothing too serious. It has been five years since I lost my Robert and I will always miss him, however I am not in pain anymore. I would love a husband again and even more children, but I will not be heartbroken if it does not happen." she said.

The door suddenly opened and King Henry IX and his illegitimate half-brother, Lord Edward Fitzroy, the Duke of Richmond and Somerset, walked in. All of the ladies stood up and curtsied deeply to the two men.

King Harry smiled.

"You may rise, Ladies." he said.

He walked up to Queen Lillian and kissed her.

"How are you, darling?" he asked.

Queen Lillian smiled.

"I am well. What brings you here this early?" she asked.

King Harry smiled.

"I have a surprise for you." he said.

Queen Lillian looked at her husband, confused.

King Harry turned around at the door.

"You may come in." he said.

The door opened and a middle-aged woman walked in, holding the hand of little six year old Princess Mary, Harry and Lillian's oldest child together.

Queen Lillian smiled.

"Mary!" she exclaimed.

The little Princess ran to her mother.

"Mama!" she yelled.

Queen Lillian picked her daughter up.

"How are you, my little Querida?" she asked.

Princess Mary smiled.

"I am well, Mama." she said.

Queen Lillian looked at her husband.

"Will Charles and Joanna be here as well?" she asked, regarding their two year old son and one year old daughter.

King Harry shook his head.

"Not this time. I did not want them coming to Court at this young of an age. However, we all will visit them after Christmas and Mary will remain here at Court, until our Summer Progress." he said.

Queen Lillian smiled.

"Oh, this is wonderful. Lord Edward, how are you?" she asked.

The Duke bowed.

"I am well, Your Majesty. I have come to ask permission if I may address one of your ladies." he asked.

Queen Lillian nodded.

"Of course, you are always welcome here." she said.

He smiled and walked towards Lady Katherine. He and Lady Katherine had become close friends, despite the fact that he was twenty years older than her. They both bonded over the fact they lost their spouses in tragic circumstances early in life.

"Hello, Katherine." he said.

She smiled.

"Edward, how are you?" she said.

He smiled.

"I am well. I heard that you were not going to be attending the Queen this Christmas." he said.

She shook her head.

"No. The Queen was merciful to let me return to my son's estate for the Christmas season. I miss my angel. I have not seen him in six months." she said.

He nodded.

"I understand. I will not keep you. I just wanted to give you your present earlier." he said, as he handed her a small box.

Lady Katherine blushed.

"You did not have to get me anything." she said, opening the box and revealing a pair of ruby earrings.

She gasped.

"They are beautiful. Thank you so much, Edward." she said.

Lord Edward smiled.

"You are most welcome." he said.

King Harry cleared his throat.

"Brother, we have matters to attend to. I think we should leave the Queen and her ladies to their activities." he said.

Lord Edward nodded his head.

"Yes, Your Majesty." he said.

He bowed to the Queen and her ladies and the men left the Chamber.

Lady Katherine didn't take her eyes off the door, feeling a weird feeling of sadness.

30 November 1564
Castle of La Mota, Medina del Campo, Spain
Lord Fernando de Cabrera, Marquess de Moya's Bedchamber

Lord Fernando was reading one of his favorite books. The nineteen year olds nephew of Queen Elizabeth of Navarre was favored by his aunt. He was a handsome and cultured young man and was favored by the Spanish Royal Family. Despite his young age, he already had traveled to the Holy Roman Empire and France on behalf of of his aunt.

The door opened and his mother, Isabella, Dowager Marquessa de Moya, walked in.

Fernando smiled at his mother.

"How can I help you, Mother?" he asked.

Isabella sat down and smiled.

"I just wanted to see you, my son. I am wondering when your sister will arrive in Brazil." she said.

Lord Fernando shrugged his shoulders.

"I am sure she will send word when she does." he said.

Isabella sighed.

"Yes. I am excited that Catalina is expecting. I have been praying for more grandchildren, especially since the death of little Joanna nearly five years ago." she said.

Fernando nodded his head.

"It is wonderful. Will you be attending her in her confinement?" he asked.

Isabella nodded her head.

"I will. I shall be departing for Jaime and Catalina's home in Madrid after Christmas." she said.

Fernando nodded and took a deep breath.

Isabella looked at her son, closely.

"Is something wrong, son?" she asked.

Fernando stood up and paced a bit.

"Mother, what do you know about this lady I am to marry?" he asked.

Isabella stood up. Queen Elizabeth had arranged for her eldest son to marry Lady Mary Grey.

"She is the same age as you and she's the third daughter of my cousin, Lady Catherine's, four daughters I believe. She's of noble birth and is the granddaughter of my late aunt, Elizabeth, Dowager Queen of France. She's coming with a very good dowry." she said.

Fernando nodded.

"I hope she's educated. I hear her sister, the Lady Jane Grey-Stewart, is one of the most learned women in Scotland." he said.

Isabella nodded.

"She definitely is. I am sure Lady Mary will be an asset to our family and hopefully will have a good career at your aunt's Court . "

Fernando nodded.

"I also hope she gives me an heir as soon as possible." he said.

Isabella touched her son's shoulder.

"Everything will be fine, son." she said.

Fernando looked at his mother.

"I pray you are right, Mother." he said.

9 December 1564
Ludlow Castle, Ludlow, Welsh Marches
Lord Mark Tudor, Duke of Rutland's Apartments

A woman's screaming echoed through a part of Ludlow Castle. Prince Edward of Wales and his cousin, Lord Mark Tudor, Duke of Rutland, the second son of his great uncle, Prince Edmund Tudor, Duke of Somerset and his first wife, the late Anne Boleyn, looked towards the door. The woman screaming was Lady Alice Tudor, Mark's beloved wife and she currently giving birth again to their eighth child. The labor was proving to be difficult, as Alice has been in labor two days.

Mark was pacing and took a deep sigh.

"Why is It taking so long?" he asked aloud.

Edward sighed.

"I do not know, dear Mark." he said.

Mark looked at the door, as Alice screamed again. He and Alice has been happily married for twenty years and although this was their eighth child, only three of their children were alive: Nineteen year old Lord Henry, Seventeen year old Lady Katherine and five year old Lady Elizabeth Tudor. Alice had suffered two miscarriages, given birth to a stillborn son and they had a daughter named Eleanor, who died from the Sweat when she was five years old in 1555.

The door opened and Princess Elisabeth, Edward's wife, walked out.

Both men looked at them. Elisabeth shook her head.

"The labor has not progressed far. The midwife is sending for a physician." she said.

Mark nodded his head.

"Thank you, Your Highness. I do not want any expense spared. I want to do all we can to help Alice." he said.

Suddenly, Lady Alice Tudor screamed again.

Several hours later...

The sun was now starting to set and still Lady Alice was dealing with her hard labor. The physician was with her. Princess Elisabeth now waited outside with her husband and their loyal courtier.

Mark groaned, in frustration.

"It has been nearly three days. What the hell is taking so long?" he asked.

Princess Elisabeth, who was silently praying for her lady-in-waiting and friend, shook her head.

"It is terrible." she asked.

The door opened and the physician walked out.

Mark walked towards the doctor.

"My wife?" he asked.

The physician sighed.

"I have examined the Duchess thoroughly. It seems the child is positioned incorrectly and is too large to be moved. The Duchess is exhausted and I am afraid that... "

Mark became aggravated.

"WHAT?!" he asked.

"You will have to make a decision on who you want to save, Your Grace." the physician said.

Mark fell against the wall. He could not believe what he was hearing. He was shocked and horrified.

"No." he quietly said.

The midwife walked out.

"Doctor, the Duchess wants to see her husband." he said.

Mark walked into the room and was overwhelmed with the smell of blood and sweat. He saw his beloved Alice in the bed. Her skin was pale and sweaty and her strawberry blonde hair was darkened by perspiration. He could see her struggling with pain.

He walked up to her and held her hand.

"Darling?" he said.

Alice smiled.

"I needed to see you. This is not going well." she said.

Mark shook his head.

"It will be well. You just have to hold on." he said.

Alice looked at her husband, with tears in her blue eyes.

"Mark, I want you to choose the child." she said.

Mark shook his head.

"No. I will not do that." he said.

Alice squeezed his hand.

"We have already lost four children. I can not bear that loss again. I am begging you to give this child a chance. We need another son." she said.

Mark scoffed.

"Henry is a young man. We can have grandchildren soon." he said.

Alice began to cry, as her contractions ripped through her again.

"Mark, I am begging you." she cried.

Mark looked at his wife and cried. He knew she was suffering, but he could not sacrifice her.

Suddenly, Alice screamed out in pain and her midwife rushed in and checked her and she gasped.

Mark looked at her.

"What is it?" he said.

The midwife looked up.

"The child's arm is presenting." she said.

Mark was horrified. He did not know much about childbirth, but he knew children should be born head first.

Alice looked at the physician.

"Save my child. I need my confessor." she said.

Mark looked at Alice, with tears in his eyes.

"Please do not leave me. I am begging you." he said.

Alice grabbed his hand.

"Our child deserves to live. I have made my decision." she said.

Mark cried and she tried to comfort him. Mark continued to cry, Alice received Communion and upon her request, the Last Rites.

When the Priest was done, Alice grabbed Mark.

"My Love, talk to me." she said through her pain.

Mark sniffled.

"Should I summon our children?" he asked.

Alice shook her head.

"No, I do not want this to be how they remember me. Tell them I love them and I shall watch over them. However, I need to see Princess Elisabeth." she said.

The Princess of Wales, who was at the door, walked in.

"I am here, Lady Alice." she said.

Lady Alice smiled.

"You have been a good mistress to serve. I thank you for your kindness. I am humbly asking for you to take my daughter, Katherine, into your household. She will be a good Maid-of-Honor to you." she said.

Princess Elisabeth smiled.

"I will." she said.

She touched her hand and walked back to her husband, wiping her eyes.

Alice looked at Mark.

"Thank you so much for these happy twenty years. I was just a sixteen year old girl when I married you. I was scared that you would be a cruel and distant husband, but you have been gentle and loving. You are a wonderful father. Thank you for making life wonderful." she said.

Mark smiled, as he cried.

"You are the one, who has made my life wonderful. I love you so much." he said.

Alice lifted herself up, despite her contractions.

"I love you too, Mark." she said.

The physician cleared his throat.

"It is time, Your Grace." he said.

Mark sighed and held on to Alice's hand, before finally letting go and leaving the room. He looked at Prince Edward and Princess Elisabeth.

He shook his head and just knelt down by the Cross and altar and began to pray. He let his tears fall, as he prayed for the Lord and his blessed mother in Heaven to strengthen his heart and prepare him for what was to come.

Suddenly, they all heard a loud, blood curdling screaming that lasted longer than usual and more agonizing. They all knew what was happening and Mark broke down, sobbing. Elisabeth and Edward held on to each other.

After nearly an hour, the physician walked out, looking very sad.

He looked at Mark.

"It was a girl, Your Grace." he said.

Mark looked at him, confused.

"Was?" he asked.

The physician nodded.

"I am sorry, but we lost the child... as well as the Duchess." he said.

Mark felt like the entire world crashed around him and nearly lost his footing. He pushed past the doctor and saw the blood soaked instruments that had cut his poor wife. He nearly lost it seeing it. He walked to the bed , where his beloved Alice lay. She was finally out of pain, but his heart was broken. Next to her, was his swaddled daughter, who the Lord took back before she could take a breath. He knelt next to his wife and daughter, ignoring the blood soaked sheet covering the wound in his wife stomach and cried more, mourning his beloved wife and best friend, who he felt had died for nothing.

11 December 1564
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Portuguese Empire
The Royal Ship

The ship had finally docked. It had been an agonizing two months. The occupants had been through a horrible crossing, but they finally arrived.

Infanta Maria stepped out in the deck and was met with a cloudy, but warm day. She was amazed at the sight. Rio de Janeiro looked beautiful, despite it being a new city.

Lady Ana, one of Maria's ladies-in-waiting, smiled.

"The land is beautiful, Your Grace." she said.

Maria nodded.

"It is. I wish that Beatriz survived the voyage." she said, sadly.

Maria and Lady Ana remained silent for awhile. Maria's lady-in-waiting, Lady Beatriz, died during the voyage to Brazil from consumption and they had to bury her at sea.

Lady Ana smiled sadly.

"Do not worry, My Lady. I will serve you." she said

Maria smiled.

"Thank you, Ana." she said.

When all of their belongings were brought up to the deck, Maria and Lady Ana were escorted on to the docks and were met by a middle-aged man.

He bowed deeply to Maria.

"Infanta, welcome to Brazil. I am Felipe and I am a servant of the Duke. I have been sent here to accompany you to the Ducal Palace." he said.

Maria smiled.

"Thank you, Lord Felipe. I am most gracious." she said.

Lord Felipe bowed again and escorted Maria and Lady Ana to a waiting carriage, while their belongings were loaded on to the back.

Maria sighed.

"This is our new life." she said.

The Cabral Villa
The Courtyard

"My Lady, look at this beautiful home. It is so large. It is almost like a palace." she said.

Maria looked and Ana was right. The estate of her betrothed was a large villa in the Mediterranean style and www sitting on a nice size of land. She was also told that her husband owned a townhome in the center of Rio de Janeiro.

Suddenly, her door opened and a small stepping stool was placed and her driver held his hand out and he helped Maria from the carriage. When she looked up, she was face to face with an older woman, dressed in fine attire. She had jet black hair that was streaked with gray and covered with a veil. Next to her was an older man, with gray hair, a black and gray beard and he was on a walking stick, which Maria expected, as she heard the old man was troubled by gout. The older couple was surrounded by their servants, who were all dressed in gray attire.

The older woman smiled and stepped forward.

"Welcome, Infanta Maria. I am Lady Carlotta Enriquez de Cabral, Lord Pedro's mother." she said.

Infanta Maria gave a kind smile.

"The pleasure is mine, My Lady." she said.

Lady Carlotta smiled and gestures to her husband.

"This is my husband, Lord João de Cabral, Pedro's father." she said.

Maria nodded at the older man.

"My Lord." she said.

He stiffly nodded.

"Infanta." he said.

Lady Carlotta glared at her husband and smiled back at Maria.

"Let us get you inside. The servants will gather your belongings and place them in your room. Your attendants may follow as well. Come along now." she said.

Maria and Ana followed Lady Carlotta into the villa and they were amazed at the interior. Their was beautiful paintings and sculptures and the Cabral Family Crest. Maria did not know that her new marital family was so luxurious.

Lady Carlotta began to speak.

"My father-in-law founded Brazil in the year 1500. This colony is blossoming and I prefer it to Portugal. It is always warm here and we recently discovered gold in the mines. We have prospered here." she said.

She looked back at Maria and looked at Ana, with shock.

"Where are all of your attendants?" she asked Maria.

Maria sighed.

"I was only given two ladies-in-waiting. Ana is my only one, as my second lady, Beatriz, died during our journey." she said.

Lady Carlotta sighed.

"Pity. However, as Duchess, you will need more ladies. I will lend you three of my own and after your wedding to my son, you can establish your household permanently." she said.

Maria smiled.

"Thank you." she said.

Suddenly, a man's voice said:

"I see you have arrived and met Mother."

The three ladies looked up and there was a tall, handsome man was standing on the stairs. He was wearing fancy clothes anh had dark hair, olive skin, hazel eyes and was clean shaven.

He began to walk down the stairs.

"I am sorry I was not here to welcome you. I had estate matters to attend to. I am Lord Pedro, the Duke of La Paz." he said.

Maria bowed her head.

"I am please to make your acquaintance, my Lord." she said.

Lady Carlotta looked at Ana.

"I will show you the household. You can follow me." she said.

Maria and Pedro were left alone.

"I trust you like the estate?" he asked.

Maria nodded.

"I do. It is very grand." she said.

Pedro smiled.

"Thank you. I was given the Dukedom twelve years ago. The late King Carlos then gave me a generous stream of income. I was able to construct this home and take care of my aging parents. I wanted a better home, especially after what happened to my late wife, Bianca." he said.

Maria and Pedro began to walk up the stairs.

"I was told you were married before. May I ask what happened?" she asked.

Pedro sighed.

"Her name was Bianca Morales. We married nineteen years ago. We both were seventeen years old. We lived in Portugal, but then I returned to Brazil one year later. I had to leave her, because she was with child and I did not want to risk her traveling in her condition. Our child died at birth and she suffered from melancholy. She stayed with her family for two years and then finally joined me here. After three years, I had to quell a small rebellion and unfortunately they locked Bianca in our home in La Paz and burned the home with her inside. I was granted the Dukedom after that." he said.

Maria looked at him, with sadness.

"I apologize. I am deeply sorry." she said.

Pedro nodded.

"We both know pain. I do have matters to attend to again. Your apartments are near mine. We will be married in two months time. I hope to get to know you more in that time." he said.

Maria nodded.

"I do as well." she said.

24 December 1564
Royal Palace of Olite, Olite, Navarre
The Banquet Hall

The Spanish Court was alive with excitement. The year has been eventful between the attacks from the French Hugenots and the Royal Family had even been in disarray, however all seemed well and now Christmas was here.

Queen Elizabeth and her husband, King Luis, were watching the entertainment. They were visibly happy and seemed content, despite the year they had. They were even more excited that all of their children were at Court for the festivities. The King and Queen were very proud of their large family.

Their eldest, Infanta Isabel, was now nearly fourteen years old and was a beautiful and intelligent young lady. She was a kindred of her father and he inspired her views. As the eldest sister, she was known to be nurturing with her six younger siblings. Her parents were hoping to find a marriage for her, as she was their eldest daughter and child. She also resembled her father with her brown hair, but she inherited her mother's green eyes.

Their eldest son and heir, Infante Eduardo, Prince of Asturias, Duke of Girona and Prince of Viana, was now nine years old and was an intelligent boy. He was already fluent in the languages of his future realms and seemed very interested in the territories in the New World. He was proud of his Spanish heritage, especially with his great-grandparents, The Catholic Monarchs.
He also loved reviewing the troops with his parents. The Spanish Navy was a force to be reckoned with and he really wanted to join.

The next child, eight year old, Infanta Juana, was unusual to many people. She was unusually intelligent, even more than her brother. She was betrothed to the Crown Prince of Poland and she already mastered the Polish language with perfection. She was the first sibling to stand out physically from her siblings, since she was the first to have auburn hair, but she also inherited her father's brown eyes.

The twins, Infanta Maria and Infante Carlos, were now six years old and they were vastly different. Maria was a quiet, but pretty girl with brown hair, who did not like being the center of attention. Her younger twin brother, Carlos, was the opposite. He was a fiery red-head and with a temper to match. Queen Elizabeth saw alot of her father in her second son. Unlike his twin sister, who was destined to be the Queen of Portugal, Carlos was promised to the Church. Elizabeth and Luis hoped that it would calm his fiery disposition.

Four year old Infante Juan was a cheerful little boy and was a joy to his parents and his governess. His character was loving and gentle and he always did what was instructed of him. He also had a German nursemaid, at the request of his aunt, Infanta Juana, Dowager Princess of Anhalt, since his betrothal to her daughter, Mary, Princess of Anhalt.

Lastly, the baby in the Royal Family was fifteen-month old Infanta Bianca. She was just now starting to walk and talk. Despite being an infant, no one had any genuine complaints about caring for the child. She was not even known to cry or fuss much. Her resemblance to her mother was becoming apparent everyday.

King Luis looked at his wife's, lovingly, while she held little Bianca in her lap.

"You are truly beautiful." he said.

Queen Elizabeth smiled.

"You make me blush, as if I were still a bride of seventeen." she said.

King Luis smiled and kissed her hand.

The festivities continued for several hours and the children of the Court all went to bed. King Luis had wanted to dance with his wife, but she had turned him down. He dances with their eldest daughter and his half-sister, seventeen year old Lady Angela Madruzzo, the eldest daughter of his mother's second marriage.

Lady Sancha and Princess Giovanna, Duchess of the Infantado walked up to their Queen and friend.

Lady Sancha smiled.

"Are you well, Your Majesty?" she asked.

Queen Elizabeth nodded.

"I am well. The celebrations are just overwhelming." she said.

Sancha placed her hand on her stomach.

"I understand." she said.

Elizabeth looked at the gesture and gasped.

"Sancha...are you with child again already?" she asked.

Sancha nodded her head.

"I know I just lost my poor daughter six months ago, but I am very happy." she said.

Queen Elizabeth nodded and smiled.

"When are you due?" she asked.

"I am due to give birth in May." she said.

Queen Elizabeth smiled.

"I guess you won't be attending me in my confinement." she said.

Sancha and Princess Giovanna looked at their Queen.

Queen Elizabeth, knowing what they were going to ask, nodded her head.

"I am due to be brought to childbed in July. Luis and I are going to announce my condition at the end of the night." she said.

Princess Giovanna sighed.

"I am due in June." she said.

Queen Elizabeth and Lady Sancha looked at their friend and stepmother in-law respectively. Princess Giovanna was thirty-nine years old and has not given birth in over four years.

Queen Elizabeth smiled and grabbed her two friends' hands.

"We are all being blessed by the Lord. This time next year, we will be holding our new babies. I know that this year was difficult for us for all different reasons. However, I believe good times are ahead and we will rejoice." she said.

Sancha and Princess Giovanna smiled and nodded, praying that their Queen was right and that the sorrowful times were definitely at an end.

Author's Note: Thank you all so much for your patience and devotion! I hope you all like the new Chapter. I just wanted to add that I have changed the name of King Henry IX and Queen Lillian's third child from Princess Isabella to Princess Joanna, after the late Queen Juana. I have updated Chapter Sixty-Six for that change. There will be several historical references and I want to urge again that this is a Historical Fiction story and i hope we can all coexist when it comes to certain topics that may come up. Please Read and Review and Chapter Sixty-Nine is on the way!
