They arrived at the hotel restaurant and Steve, like a perfect gentleman, pulled out the chair for her to sit in.

"Thank you, Steve."

He sat down too and they looked at each other. He didn't know where to start the conversation and Catherine knew it. "So, what are you doing out of Hawaii, Steve? It was a huge susprise when the elevator door opened and I saw you there."

"It was a surprise to me too, Cath. A very pleasant surprise. I came to interrogate a prisoner at the prison, but it was a failure. And what about you? What are you doing in town? I assume you don't live here, since you are staying in a hotel."

"Nice detective work," she smiled and continued. "No, I don't live here. I just came to see a medical specialist."

"Why? Are you sick?" He asked quickly, but quickly apologized, " I'm being indiscreet, I'm sorry."

"No. It's okay to ask. I'd just rather not answer, it's a private matter."

"Sure, Cath. It's all right, forget my question."

The waiter handed them the menu and for a few minutes they concentrated on choosing their food.

After they chose what they would eat and drink, Catherine asked him how married life was going.

"She died two years ago, Cath."

"Oh, Steve! I'm so sorry!"

"Thank you," he replied.

"What about your son? I heard you had a son."

Stwve smiled at her. "You're not such a good spy anymore, huh? I actually have three children."

"Oh, really? But I didn't spy on your life, I just wanted to know if you were okay."

"I know, Cath. I was just kidding. You know, it's been a long time since I could really smile. I have to smile for the kids even if I'm destroyed inside."

"You miss her a lot, don't you?" Catherine asked.

"Catherine... there are so many problems that I don't have time to stop and think about her. It's not easy raising teenage kids by yourself." Steve picked up the phone and showed Catherine a picture of the children.

"You have a little girl? Oh, she's so cute. They are beautiful," Catherine handed the phone back to him. "Did she die in childbirth?"

"No, she died in a traffic accident when Lyla was six months old," Steve replied.

"Lyla? That's a pretty name. What are the names of the other two?"

"Don and Caroline. Well, I didn't choose the name of any of the three. But now tell me about yourself. Are you married? Do you have any children?""

Steve touched on the subject that was hurting her. "No, I didn't get married and I don't have children. I haven't really even settled anywhere. I live a little here, a little there."

"Are you still in business?" Steve asked.

"No. I retired."

The waiter brought the wine to them and they interrupted their conversation until he walked away.

"Go to Hawaii, Cath. You loved the island so much," Steve told her before tasting some of the wine.

"The attraction wasn't the island, Steve. It was you."

Steve held her hand lovingly. "Well, I'm still there."

Catherine looked at his hand over her hand. "It was a good time..."

"Yes, it was a great time," Steve agreed.

"Who are the kids with for you to be here?"

"They are with their grandparents," Steve replied.

The waiter arrived bringing dinner and Steve let go of her hand.

An hour later, Steve walked her to her bedroom door. "Will I still see you tomorrow?" she asked.

"Can we have breakfast together? My flight leaves at 11 a.m."

"Sure. I'll see you tomorrow then. Good night, Steve."

"Good night, Cath. I want to say again how nice it was to see you."

Catherine touched the right side of his face. "I can say the same."

She went into her room and Steve went into his room. Catherine lay on the bed and thought about meeting Steve again. She remembered a line her mother used to say, "A love from the past can come back, but only you decide whether to open the door or not."

Steve walked into his room and sat on the bed. "Ah , Cath... I still amaze myself thinking about the days I experienced such intense and unique moments by your side. Unforgettable moments..."

The next day, Steve ordered a special breakfast and had it delivered to her room. He arrived five minutes later and she was waiting for him.

"You took your time, sailor."

"I wanted to give you time to get dressed," he replied as he walked into the room.

They had breakfast together and talked for quite a while. Steve got a call from Caroline because Lyla wanted to talk to him before she left for school.

"It's my youngest," Steve said to Catherine before taking the call.

Catherine smiled and kept quiet because she didn't know if his children would be angry that he was having breakfast with her. "That's better to avoid," she thought.

Catherine listened to Lyla talk and realized how much the little girl loved Steve. He was smiling as he spoke to her, but it was a sad smile and Catherine didn't understand why.

"I'll be home later, Lyla," Steve replied when the girl asked him when he would be going home.

"Okay, Daddy. I love you."

"I love you too, honey," He replied and Catherine noticed a sadness in Steve again.

"She sounds like sweetheart," Catherine commented after Steve ended the call.

"She is," he replied.

A few hours later, Catherine went to the airport with Steve to say goodbye to him. She hugged him lovingly. "It was really good to see you, Steve."

"I can say the same, Cath. And remember, if you want to go to Hawaii, I'm still there."

"Okay," she replied and Steve kissed her suddenly, without her expecting it. "Bye."

"Bye," she replied and he headed toward the boarding area.

A few minutes later, Steve was sitting looking out the plane window when he remembered that he hadn't asked her for her phone number. "Damn it!"

Catherine texted him and surprised him. "I miss you already, sailor."

"Me too, Cath. But I don't remember giving you my phone number and I forgot to ask for yours."

"Well, you changed your phone number three times over those years and I always had those numbers. I wasn't a bad spy, was I?" Catherine replied.
