Voice
Strolling through the quiet park, Lena breathed deeply, relishing the crisp, cold winter air and the warm sunshine peeking through the snow-laden trees. Then she glimpsed a lone figure standing near the little lake. She was just about to turn away when the ringing of a cell phone and the voice answering it caught her attention.
"Hey, yes, I'm already here. Where are you? I'm freezing my ass off?"
Lena stopped and smiled. This was most definitely Alex's voice. Being early for her appointment, she quietly made her way across the snow-covered lawn.
"Kara's late, huh?" she said casually, wisely stopping a few feet away from Alex, who promptly spun around looking ready to fight.
"Lena!" she blurted out, immediately relaxing and smiling.
"Hey Alex", Lena chuckled, stepping forward and giving the other woman a hug.
"So, you are the one Kara wanted to meet here, then?" Alex asked.
Lena cocked her head, "No, I wouldn't think so. I'm actually on my way to meet Andrea but was early and so I took the route through the park."
Alex nodded, "How did you know I was speaking to Kara then?"
"Alex", Lena said, raising an eyebrow, "I've known you long enough by now to recognize when you speak to your sister."
Upon receiving a puzzled look, she continued, "You use a particular kind of voice with Kara. It's always so full of love and care". She paused briefly as Alex smiled. "Even when you are telling her off because your backside is getting cold", Lena finished, sniggering.
"Well, it is cold and clearly it's not my fault that my darling sister forgets that I can feel the cold even if she can't", Alex pouted but started laughing immediately and Lena joined in.
"You have that, too, you know", Alex said after a while.
Lena blinked and looked confusedly at her friend, "I have what?"
Alex chuckled softly, "A Kara-voice".
"What?" Lena's brow crinkled.
Alex turned to face Lena, "When you speak to Kara, your voice always changes. It's like that special bond you two have becomes audible, so to say."
Lena opened her mouth to answer but couldn't really find the words. She did, however, feel her face become rather warm.
"Alex, I … really? I didn't…" Lena stammered. "I really do that?"
"I'm here! Sorry for being late!" Kara's voice came drifting across the lawn as she herself came hurrying towards the two women.
"About time", Alex huffed, "I'm nearly frozen solid", she added, hugging her sister.
Kara rolled her eyes, "Don't be so dramatic".
Turning around, Kara smiled, "Lena, hey! It's so good to see you. What are you doing here?" and gave her best friend a hug as well.
"Hey Kara", Lena beamed, "I'm happy to see you too", and gave Kara a squeeze. "I was on my way to meet Andrea and ran into Alex", she added. "Where have you been? Being heroic while your dear sister's backside was freezing?" she smirked.
Kara put her hands on her hips and puffed out her chest, "Have you two been conspiring against me, or what?"
Lena and Alex exchanged a sly look.
"I knew it!" Kara burst out, wagging her finger. "But, no, Miss Luthor, for your information, I was actually in the editorial meeting working very hard. And, besides, Alex's butt is not that sensitive. I grew up with her so I would know", she said, shooting her sister a look.
"Ok, ok, can we stop talking about my butt already?" Alex protested.
They all burst out laughing.
"Speaking of sensitive", Lena wheezed, "I gotta go. Andrea is very fond of punctuality", she said with a slight roll of her eyes.
"Should I fly you there?" Kara offered.
Lena smiled, "Thanks, Kara but it's just a few minutes away and I really enjoy walking".
"Ok, then I'll see you tomorrow, right? Lunch is still on?"
"Of course! I wouldn't miss it for the world", Lena smiled and embraced Kara tightly.
Then she turned to Alex and gave her a hug as well, "I'll see you soon, too".
When they broke apart, Alex smiled and whispered, "Yes, Lena, you really do that".
