Promise
"I didn't meet him but Kara told me what he did" an unexpected voice broke into Lena's thoughts as she stood alone by William's grave.
She looked up to find Mon-El standing next to her, wearing a somber expression.
"He must have been a good person", he added with a slight smile.
Lena instinctively wiped her eyes.
"Yes, he was", she whispered, looking back at the grave stone.
"I'm sorry", Mon-El sighed, "Were you close?"
Lena remained silent for a moment before saying quietly, "In a way, yes."
He let out another sigh, "It's always too soon to be parted from those we care about."
Lena blinked away more tears and looked around at him only to find him watching Kara who was talking to Andrea and Nia.
"Yes, it always is", she smiled wistfully.
"Listen, Lena", he said turning back to her, his voice grave. "I need you to promise me something, please."
She raised her eyebrow, "Ah, yeah, but Mon-El … I really don't know what I …"
"Promise me to always be there for Kara", he said, cutting off Lena's rambling and leaving her speechless.
"Lena, please, promise you'll always be in Kara's life", he implored her.
Lena followed his gaze to glance at Kara, the familiar warmth filling her heart.
"Yes, I can promise you that, Mon-El. I will always be with her", she said with a gentle smile, looking him directly in the eyes.
"Thank you, Lena."
An immense weight seemed to be lifted off him as he exhaled, smiling and closing his eyes briefly. Then he locked eyes with Lena for a long moment and she knew she had just made a promise that would have a profound impact on her and Kara's lives – and possibly many more.
