Treasures

The rhythmic sounds of a knife on a wooden chopping board were ringing through the kitchen.

"Is this ok or too large?" Lena asked, focusing on the half-chopped bar of dark chocolate in front of her.

"Looks good", William said, peering over from where he was separating eggs on the other opposite counter.

Lena finished her work and then asked, "Should I start melting it already?"

"Yes, please", he said and Lena complied.

For a while they worked in silence and then the dough was finally ready to be formed.

"Now, this is the most important part", William said seriously, raising his index finger and smiling.

Lena perked up, "Your secret to making those Jaffa cakes the best?"

He nodded and proceeded to form the dough carefully. Lena watched him closely but couldn't find anything that seemed special to her.

"Am I missing something?" she asked, frowning slightly.

He chuckled but continued working in silence.

"Hey!" Lena protested, "What's funny?"

She put her hands on her hips and, even though she couldn't see herself, she was reminded of Supergirl.

William finished the last cake, still smiling mysteriously.

"William!" Lena demanded, bewildered but intrigued.

He put the baking sheet into the oven and then, finally, turned to face her, "I think of my dad."

Lena blinked, thinking he was toying with her. But then she saw he was smiling softly.

"Oh my god, William", Lena gasped, reaching out for him. "I'm so sorry, I didn't mean to be disrespectful or to bring up painful memories."

He took her hands, "Relax, Lena. It's all ok", he said calmly. "Thinking of my dad when I bake, especially when I bake these Jaffa cakes, is so precious to me."

Lena opened her mouth to answer but was lost for words.

"I remember exactly how we would bake these together and I'm reminded that, even though he is gone, he'll always be with me", he released one of her hands and covered his heart. "In here", he smiled, squeezing her hand.

Lena remembered what he had said to her during their first conversation in her lab at the tower. And, finally, she understood what he had meant then and what he was teaching her now. The secret was to treasure, embrace and use the good memories she had to move forward.
