Boss

"You'll love the new headquarters of the DEO!" Kara said excitedly, bouncing alongside Lena as they were striding down the street.

"I'm sure I will", Lena smiled. "It's fantastic that the DEO is now officially recognized"

Kara nodded vigorously.

"And here we are!" Kara announced when they had reached a modern skyscraper with a stylishly decorated front yard featuring the DEO crest at its center.

"Wow", Lena breathed. "It looks spectacular."

Lena's astonished look made Kara giggle, "Oho, hear, hear! If Miss Luthor is impressed, then it must truly be awesome."

"Well, I'm just saying it as it is", Lena said in a dignified voice. "Come on then, I want to see what's hiding behind this magnificent facade.

She strode forward and Kara followed, "Hey, wait for me!"

When they entered the atrium, Lena gasped again, "They really did the thing properly, didn't they? A genuine restart."

"Yup", Kara said simply, waiving at the clerk at the front desk as they approached.

"Hello Miss Danvers, Miss Luthor", the young man said, inclining his head and smiling.

Kara smiled back, "Hi Dan. Could we have a visitor's pass for Miss Luthor, please?"

"Sure, just a moment", Dan said and busied himself with the computer.

Lena used the time to look around once again and her eyes fell on a collection of black and white photographs on the wall of the lounge corner. She smiled, all the superfriends were depicted there under the headline The Foundation Pillars of the New DEO.

"I love the photo gallery", she said, pointing.

Kara turned, "Yeah, Jonn insisted on having all our pictures put up. Mind you, James was not happy when he found out he needed to find one of each of us in action so that the picture would reflect our role in the team", she grimaced.

"Well, he did a fantastic job", Lena said appreciatively.

"Here's your pass, Miss Luthor", said Dan.

Lena turned and, taking her pass, smiled, "Thank you, Dan."

He returned the smile, "Good to have you here, Miss Luthor. We were wondering when you would come."

Lena stared, "You were?"

"Of course", Dan said defiantly, "After the role you played in saving the world and all, how could we not?"

"Thank you", Lena smiled.

Then she and Kara made their way to the elevators. Upon entering, Kara pressed the button for the 3rd underground level.

"We're meeting the others in the command center", she said when she saw Lena's confused look.

Lena nodded, pinning her visitor's pass to her coat.

When the elevator door opened, Lena was astounded for the third time. The underground room was more a hall than anything else – spacious and lit by special lamps to simulate natural light. Everything was the latest state-of-the-art technology and flawlessly planned.

"Lena, welcome to the new DEO", Jonn and Alex said as they approached.

"Thank you", Lena gasped, "This is spectacular. The entire building is."

Jonn inclined his head in appreciation of her words, "Thank you very much. If you say that, that truly means a lot."

Lena chuckled, "What does everyone keep saying that?"

Jonn and Alex looked bewildered but Kara said, "Because you of all people have a flair for the best of the best in all aspects of life. … And I mean that in the most positive way."

Lena wanted to say something to contradict Kara but closed her mouth without uttering a word. Kara was right, after all. So she only nodded, shrugging.

"So, let's start our tour, shall we?" Alex said. "In fact, let's go downstairs right away."

They all got back into the elevator and exited two floors further down. First it was utterly dark but as soon as Jonn stepped into the corridor the automatic lights overhead went on, keeping pace with the party as they strode down the hall.

Then they turned into one of the many doors and Lena found herself staring at the most advanced lab she had ever seen – and that was saying something.

"My god", she said, covering her mouth in awe. "This is magnificent! How did you do all this?"

Everyone just smiled mysteriously until a figure emerged from behind some shelves.

"I helped", Brainy said, "And some of my friends and colleagues from various planets and times."

"Brainy, hi!" Lena chirped as he approached. "I should have known you would be involved – a mind and resources like yours."

He stapled his fingers, fixing her with a purposeful look.

Lena's eyebrow went up, "What is it?"

Brainly looked at Jonn who promptly stepped forward.

"Lena", he said in a grave voice.

Her heartbeat accelerated as she looked at him and then saw that the others were also looking serious.

"We've not only called you here to show you the new DEO", Jonn stated.

Lena stared, confused.

"We've called you here because we would like for you to be the new Head of Scientific Development here at the DEO."

Lena's mouth fell open. "What? You want me to be part of the DEO?", she gasped.

"Yes, and not just any part", Jonn said, smiling now. "We would like your brilliant mind, your kind heart and your dedication to the betterment of the world to be the guiding light of all scientific developments made here."

His words caused Lena's eyes to fill with tears and she gazed at him in utter shock. Then she glanced at the others to ensure she was not dreaming. But their eyes also reflected encouragement, pride and happiness.

"I … Jonn … Are you really serious? I mean …"

He nodded, "Absolutely, Lena."

Lena finally believed him and smiled widely, "Then, yes, definitely, yes! Thank you so much! This is an extraordinary honor."

And before she knew it, Kara had thrown herself at her followed by the others whose voices mingled in an indistinctive yet clear message of joy.
