Chapter Seven – Robin's Birthday
October come and Allan got a handful detentions (even more than Robin) Much got himself a couple as did John. Will and Djaq got only one. There had been a few troubles with the black knights – A few punch up in the corridors when no teachers were around and daily insults but nothing more than that.
Their school work had started to load up and they had to write their first English coursework. And most Saturday there were playing football in the park training for the inter school championship. Their knew more than half of the teams signed up didn't care less about it but they wanted to do well, the other half of the teams did. Robin and friends did want to go well - because what was the point otherwise?
Will's and Allan little brothers have settle into school very quickly and made their own friends. They only seen Tom when he was trying to wind up Allan, or trying to get him into trouble, and they normally see Luke when he wanted to borrow something off Will.
Robin's birthday was mid-October and he was trying to plan what he wanted to do.
"You could go bowling," suggest his dad as Robin was complaining. "They redo the ally after that fire - it's meant to be pretty good."
"I'm not ten," stated Robin
"And you are not an adult either," pointed out his father "How about go to the cinema with your friends? Watch one of the new horror or thriller film…. It will have to be a 12 mind you…."
"Dad, I been fifteen!"
"And most of your friends are still fourteen if I am not mistaken," said his dad. "I am happy to pay for you and your friends but we're going to follow the rules…."
"Okay," said Robin "I've pick a film"
"And Robin," said his father "If I hear you hit the Gisborne boy again….I might re-think about everything…."
Robin's birthday fell on a Wednesday much to Robin disgust. "Why couldn't it be half team this week," he said on the Monday. Robin was standing outside a shop with John with their bikes waiting for Much to come from one direction and for Allan and Will to come from the other.(Djaq's dad was dropping her off at the school gates) The shop was a good meeting point for them to meet if they were all biking. "Wednesday, is the worst day to have a birthday…."
"It won't be that bad," said John at once - feeling Robin was being overdramatic again
"I have to look Gisborne in the face for three lessons…..I don't want to look at that on my birthday."
John had to reframe from rolling his eyes "You are being a little dramatic Robin," he said "At lest you got something to look forward too…."
Robin shrugged a little. His was allowed to have friends over for tea his birthday but because it was a school night they weren't allowed to stay over and they all have to get home early. And the weekend they get to go the cinema and play football after. Robin knew he should be grateful for everything and he was luckier than most people – but birthday had never been the same since his mum had died. It always felt like something was missing and if he was honest birthdays always seem a little depressing – they were fun and he did have a good time but at the same time…..he never look forward to his birthday the same way. He spy Much coming toward them on his bike "Do you recon Much will like the film?"
"Of course he won't," said John
Not long after Much come Allan and Will come with their brothers. Luke and Tom went on ahead (being too cool to be seen with their older brothers) "Why are you two always the last ones?" asked Robin "I been waiting he ages….."
Allan mimic Robin mockingly then added "We live further away don't we….."
"I was just kidding," said Robin sensing Allan was in a bad mood today, "Well, let's get our game faces one….."
…
By the time Wednesday come around Robin was feeling more happy than depressed. Especially when his dad woke up early to cook breakfast for them. "Can I have extra bacon today?" asked Robin hopefully
"Why not," said his father
Robin grinned as he pour himself some juice and sat down at the table ready to tuck into his breakfast. His father passed him a bag. "The one wrapped in Christmas paper is from your great- Aunt….and the one wrapped is Blue is from Richard from work…."
"You mean big boss Richard?" asked Robin and his dad nodded "He remembered?" asked Robin surprised.
"Believe me, you are not you're are hard person to forget." Said his dad.
Robin took that as a good thing. He open the present from his great aunt first and as usual it was Jumper (because winter is here and he needed to be warm,) Normally they were ugly and too small but this year it the best. It was green with a hood and slightly too big. Robin pulled it on. "What do you think?" he asked his dad
"It's against school uniform rules," said his dad
"I know that – but come on what do you think?"
"It suits you," said his dad "Dear old Aunt Joy must of heard about the outlaws…." He laughter at his own joke.
Robin open the one from "big boss" Richard and found a watch – nothing fancy but Robin liked it and put it on made sure the time was right on it. Then he open his dad present. He got a new phone and tickets to watch Nottingham Forest football club. "Thanks dad," said Robin grinning "he had three tickets and he knew he had to choice two friends to take but he would think about that later.
School itself was uneventful and most boring. The best bit was at lunch time when Much handed out homemade brownies and they played a childish but very loud and overtop games of snap. That ended up with all the boy jumping one top of each other and Djaq looking amused.
Robin didn't even give the Black Knight another thought until his last lesson (Science with Allan and Much and unfortunately both the Sheriff and Guy Gisborne) The lesson won't of been take back if they got to choice where to sit. But because apparently their class was disruptive, disrespectful and disengage they now had a sitting plan. And Robin was place right next to Gisborne.
Robin throw his hand in the air. "Sir, I can't sit next to him…. We don't get on….it only asking for trouble…..asked any teacher here….."
"Your head of year suggest this," said their teacher "In life you have to work with people you don't always like…but you have to learn to get on…Life isn't a playground…and the world is a better place with we can all be polite to each other…"
"But sir, it's my birthday…..can I sit with my friends this one lesson?" asked Robin
"Do you want detention on your birthday?" asked the science teacher "You all need to grow up….."
This time Allan put this hand up "But sir, is their more mental health issues because we have to grow up fast?"
The Science teacher then started to rant for half the lesson about the different between the cotton wall generations were everyone had something wrong and how society had got there and he said if one person mess behaviour this lesson the whole class will stay behind for after the bell for ten minutes. And when they had to do work Gisborne keep knocking Robin's arm as he wrote and Robin kept kicking him in return but not daring to do more than that. Neither of them wanted to be responsible for holding back the whole class.
After class they rushed of class as fast as they could. "Man, why are we stuck with him?" asked Allan "I have to sit next to Harry the Smug….he will spill some chemicals over me I bet…..At least Much is next to Alice – she alright….."
Then someone dropped a stink bomb in the corridor coughing everyone to cover their noses with their jumpers and rushing towards the stairs. "Good thing it home time," said Allan patting Robin on the back "Back to yours?"
….
The rest of the afternoon and evening went too quickly for Robin's liking. The all against each other on Mario carts and eat juke good his father had gotten them – then they all watched the football game that was on TV. And before Robin knew it this friends had to go home.
That night Robin lay in his bed with his eyes closed. It was then he thought about his mother…..sometime he really did miss her.
