Lena' excitement mounted as she felt the plane touch down at JFK. She had been looking forward to this visit for so long and now it had finally worked out.

"And just before Christmas, too", Lena whispered to herself, smiling as she made her way towards the exit.

"Lena, Lena!" a voice came floating over the other noises and Lena looked around curiously to see who it was.

Then she saw Ruby running towards her and, before she knew it, the girl was hugging her tightly.

Sam was right behind her daughter, "Hey, Lena", she beamed, as she embraced her friend when Ruby had let go.

"Sam, Ruby", Lena giggled. "What are you doing here? I thought we were meeting tomorrow?"

Ruby gave a sly smile, "Well, mom told a little lie so that we could surprise you."

Lena chuckled, shaking her head, "Clearly." She looked at both of them, "And I'm very happy you did. This is the best surprise!"

Sam smiled and hooked her arm through Lena's while Ruby took her suitcase and bounced ahead happily.

"She's so excited you are here", Sam said, nodding at Ruby. "And she's spent the last two weeks making plans for us."

Lena gave a look of surprise, "Really?"

Sam chuckled, "Yes, of course!" When Lena still looked baffled, she went on, "Lena, Ruby really likes you and admires you a lot!

Lena frowned, "She does? Why?"

Sam gave a knowing smile, "Just be patient. You'll find out."

When they reached the car and Lena was about to get into the passenger seat, Ruby tugged on her sleeve.

"Come sit with me in the back, please", she said shyly.

"Ah, sure", Lena stuttered, looking at Sam who just smirked and got behind the wheel.

"I forgot how crazy traffic gets around here", Lena said, as they were moving along slowly.

Ruby look around, "So you've spent a lot of time here?"

"Well, when I was a teenager, yes", Lena said, smiling.

"Really? Like on vacation or so?" Ruby asked.

Lena gave a soft snort, "Let's say during the holidays." She paused but when she saw Ruby's enquiring look, she continued. "My mother always had me spend the summer interning at the Luthor Corp office here in New York", she said, her voice trailing off.

"Wow, that sounds really cool", Ruby said excitedly. "I mean, apart from the fact that you didn't have much free time then, right?" she added with a frown.

Lena sighed, "I … I …No, not much free time."

Suddenly, Ruby took Lena's hand, "I'm sorry if I made you sad. I didn't mean to."

Lena blinked, looking around at the girl.

"No, honey, you didn't. I'm sorry. I was just lost in thought", Lena said gently squeezing Ruby's hand. "And I did learn a lot in all these months I spent working here."

Ruby smiled.

"Go ahead, darling, and ask Lena", Sam said encouragingly, breaking the silence.

Lena turned to Ruby who had gone slightly red and pulled her hand away.

"Go ahead, Ruby" Lena smiled.

Ruby wrung her hands.

"It's ok. You can ask me anything", Lena said gently, taking the girl's hand again.

This seemed to reassure Ruby because she spoke after taking a breath.

"Well, I know I'm only 14 but …" she hesitated and Lena waited.

"But could I maybe work at L-Corp next summer … with you?" she added quietly.

Lena's mouth fell open, "You want to work at L-Corp? With me? Really?"

Ruby nodded, looking rather scared.

"Ah, yeah, I mean", Lena stuttered, "that … that's great, Ruby." Lena was smiling now, "Of course we can arrange that!"

"Really? Wow, that's so awesome", Ruby laughed, hugging Lena. "Thank you so much, Lena!"

Lena hugged her back, "You're most welcome", she whispered, closing her eyes and smiling.
