Family
They were all gathered in the dimly lit living room of the Danvers house admiring the beautifully decorated tree and listening to Kara singing Silent Night. As always, it was magical and Lena shed some happy tears.
Everyone applauded when Kara finished her song and then conversations started again.
Esme turned to Lena, "What's wrong, Auntie Lena?"
Lena blinked and a few more tears fell but she wiped them away and smiled.
"Everything is perfect, sweetie", she said, stroking the girl's cheek.
But Esme was not so easily satisfied.
"But why are you crying then?" she frowned.
And as if the word 'crying' had a magic of its own, everyone suddenly hushed up. Lena seized the opportunity.
"I'm crying because I'm very happy", she said, speaking to everyone. "You and I have had some pretty bad Christmases, right? But …" she said to Esme before turning back to the others, "But now we have these incredible people in our lives and Christmas is now really wonderful and filled of love. And that's why I'm so happy that it always makes me cry", she finished, putting her hand over her heart.
Esme pondered this for a while and then hugged Lena tightly.
"And we are just as happy that you are here with us", she smiled brightly when she let go of Lena.
Lena embraced her again, lost for words.
"Couldn't have said it better myself", Kara chimed in as she zoomed over and hugged both Lena and Esme. And before Lena knew it she found herself once more at the center of a very happy and loving group hug.
This was what she'd always dreamed of and what she knew was a reality now. She had found her true family.
