The silence in Astrometric was deafening in an unsettling way, as Seven and Tuvok handed round PADD's with some of the information from Voyager's database, that had been collected by the crew over the last few months and that in a way related to the person to whom it was given.
Chakotay read over his PADD about the planet of his tribe - Dorvan V, a planet that had been decimated from orbit. One that from the initial assessment reports showed that it wouldn't be able to support the life it had once before, without extensive external investment and help for quite a few years. He closed his eyes, trying to calm the sense of helplessness and anger he felt welling up inside of him. His people had always tried to honour the land on which they lived and depended on for their living and continued existence. Something the Sky Spirits had seen in his ancestors and honoured in their unique way. This wasn't the first time his people had been forced off their spiritual heritage that they'd nurtured since the dawn of time, both on Dorvan and Earth, a heritage others saw as their own, to use for their own selfish gain. This time though there was no profit for anybody, only to destroy and remove peoples who didn't fit in with either Cardassian or Federation ideals. That is what made the decimating of Dorvan V all the more tragic.
As these thoughts flowed through his mind a gentle hand softly rubbed his back, as tears slid down his face. Chakotay realised the person had also guided him to sit down on the steps to the holographic screen area and what surprised him the most was that it was Tom Paris who sat beside him, silently comforting the older male. He smiled at the young pilot, grateful for his presence and soft-spoken words; reminding him that there were other ways to kick-start a colony into vibrant growth again, besides the obvious.
Torres watched her husband as he spoke with soft whispered words to her friend and commanding officer whilst reading her own PADD about the DMZ. Most of the planets in that former buffer non-military zone were going to need a lot of assistance just to survive at a very basic level, let alone to rebuild to their former status. She wondered if the Federation government would assist, knowing many of the former colonies in the DMZ had been left to their own devices once the war with Cardassia and the treaty that had created the DMZ had been signed off. The Dominion War had decimated some of those planets even further, far beyond what would be considered habitable, having destroyed the entire eco-structure completely, leaving them more like a desert and totally sterile. Many of the terra-forming companies and their equipment had also been destroyed or rendered useless, unusable to be of any benefit to anyone.
"Where do we start?" she softly asked, her tone reflecting the feeling that the task was going to be beyond the Federation's current capacity to deal with, even if all their allies came on board.
"Perhaps for now, we need to discover the why?" noted Tuvok, his own tone subdued.
"Maybe all the duhb-uhl-yoo's."
"Icheb?" questioned Seven, looking at the PADD of SID.
"What? Where? Why? Who? How?"
"The biggest one being Why?"
"And Who or whom?" noted Paris quietly, realising there was more than one agenda going on here. "The other question has to be; 'how long has this been going on?' 'Who are the key players? Well, it can't have just been happening overnight. Can it?"
"Indeed," acknowledged the Vulcan.
"Detailed planning had to have been involved, strategies would have to be worked out, contingency plans put in place for unknown factors."
"Like Voyager coming home early!"
"Why didn't the Temporal Division stop the future Admiral Janeway?"
Silence greeted those innocently spoken words, as they all paused to take in that very poignant fact. Chakotay sat deep in thought, trying to recall what the older Janeway had done whilst on board, outside the Borg Hub, in the Delta Quadrant. At first nothing came to mind, but slowly an idea started to take shape from something she had said when she'd tried to persuade Seven to go against the captain's orders. The young woman hadn't relayed all that was said to her, it was just something she'd hinted at, that had stuck in his mind, something he'd tried to get her - the Admiral - to clarify, but she'd kept avoiding him, right up until the last minute. He'd finally managed to corner her between her quarters and the shuttle bay, where he'd left her to await the Captain with the Icheb virus.
"Computer, are there any messages hidden in our database from Admiral Janeway?" he asked quietly.
#Please rephrase the question# came the automatic response.
They all just stared at each other confused.
"What does that mean?" snapped Torres, frowning. She asked the computer the same question again, about hidden messages and still got the same response. "Now what?" Hearing Chakotay softly repeat the computer's words a few times and then smile.
"Kathryn, out with it." he said, determination in his voice, having put the emphasis on the woman's name, turning to look over his shoulder at the main screen as it flickered into life with an image of the older Janeway.
"I knew you'd figure it out eventually, Chakotay," she said and smiled.
"Commander?" questioned Seven and Icheb together.
"That phrase was what the computer would say almost every time either, they or I asked about one or other of the Janeway's. Right, Kathryn."
"Right. Nearly drove us all nuts!"
"So, we ended up calling them by rank. And as the younger is now ranked Vice Admiral - as you knew she'd becomeā¦.."
"Intriguing!" noted Tuvok softly, still looking at the screen, along with most of the others, except Tom Paris.
"I wondered when you'd finally turn up," he commented, his tone alerting the others.
"I wouldn't do anything stupid," holding his hostage close, a phaser pointed at the person's temple; possibly the same one that had blasted a hole in Teero at the Starfleet Security Hub earlier. Chakotay just glared daggers at the hostage taker.
