Apartment

-x-x-x-

'She hasn't spoken at all.' Kunimitsu looked around the apartment he and Kagome had just been moved into. Thinking about the last three hours, he felt himself becoming more and more exhausted. The apartment had been the very same one that his father and hers had shared during their college years.

Throughout the years, the complex had upgraded the building, and so the flooring and appliances were all brand new. The paint jobs were fresh; even the counters were no longer cork but marble. It was clean, contemporary, and pretty empty. There was a couch, a TV, a bed in the master bedroom. The second bedroom was transitioned into an office, with two empty bookcases, and a large desk. They did have the decency to fill the fridge with freshly made dishes, no doubt their mothers were the deciding factor for that; otherwise, he was sure it would be empty too.

In the bathroom, their toiletries had been moved over, and a few towels, blankets, and other random necessities were in the hall closet. The master bedroom had one dresser; it was large with eight large drawers, four on both sides. Their clothes had all been moved over, along with their school uniforms hung up in the closet.

All of this had been done before Kagome, and he had gotten to his house. 'We never had a choice. She's got to know that.' Standing in the kitchen, Kunimitsu stared over the counter at Kagome. She was sitting on the couch with her head down, and hands clutched tightly in her lap. Next to her, their backpacks were leaning against one another after being brought to the apartment. Their new home. It wasn't permanent, however. No, his father just thought that this would be a good bonding experience for them. 'What kind of experience are they expecting us to gain?' His phone vibrated on the coffee table in front of Kagome, and he watched her jump, pulled from her thoughts as she turned her eyes to the phone.

She lifted the phone, and for a second, he thought she might answer it. Instead, she stood and walked it over to the kitchen counter, where she held it out to him. "I'm going to go shower and change."

Watching her leave, he swiped his phone, "hey," he closed his eyes, listening to Shuusuke, he shook his head, "Listen, let's talk tomorrow after I get out of the Student Council meeting. I...I still need to wrap my head around it." He chuckled at the inquiry his friend made, "you'll understand tomorrow." Again, he listened, "right, night." Tossing his phone onto the counter, he brought his head down into his hands as he rested his elbows on the countertop. Taking his glasses in hand, he closed his eyes as he pulled his glasses off and rubbed his eyes. This whole situation was just one massive headache.

Walking out of the kitchen, he grabbed both backpacks and walked off towards the office. He did like the desk; it was the situation he wasn't too keen on. 'I was the one who agreed first, though.'

(Flashback)

"I have no problem with the unity of our families through marriage." He felt her eyes on him. He shocked her, no doubt. 'It isn't like I want this, not really. However, Ojiisan isn't the type to just nod his head if we oppose the arrangement. Also, Otousan,' he stared ahead, though his eyes drifted to his tear ridden father. 'I've never heard of Higurashi-San's father before. If they were such good friends, why not mention him before? Why didn't I meet Higurashi-San before this, if they wanted the union from the beginning? There are a lot of unanswered questions, and I want to know more.'

"T-Tezuka-Oujiisan,"

Kunimitsu gave a subtle glance towards Kagome, who was now facing forward, her hands clenched tightly under the table just where he could see them.

"I..." she took a calming breath, "I would, of course, be honored to take on the Tezuka family name, and bring unity to our families. If this was truly something my father wanted, I want to see it through to the end."

He felt his heart skip a beat, his eyes widened a bit, but he focused his attention ahead.

"Splendid! Haha! You're both still young, so we'll wait until you're both of age. While a young lady can marry at sixteen, the male must be eighteen before they are legally able to marry. Kunimitsu, you turn seventeen in October; that's in six months, so we'll set a date for a year and a half from now. That will give the two of you plenty of time to get to know each other."

'That doesn't sound too bad,'

"During that time, you will live together, and gain the experience that comes from being in close confines with one another."

'...what?!'

"Kagome-Chan,"

"..."

"Kagome-Chan."

He brought his hand up and knocked his hand lightly against hers, where no one else could see. He felt the girl jump a bit beside him, bringing her eyes up and looking around at the adults who were staring curiously at her.

"Y-yes?"

"The apartment you'll be staying at, it's the same one that Kuniharu-San and Kazuki used during their time at college."

"...right."

"How about we relocate to the dining room for dinner,"

(End Flashback)

'In the end, we ate dinner in silence while our parents discussed the apartment and how they'd already taken the liberty to move our belongings. All of the important things, at least.' He sighed, looking over the calendar, he took in the date. It was only the twelfth of April; the fourteenth, however, would be their physical exams. "Two days, that's on Thursday." He pulled out his school work and skimmed through it. Most of his day was gone, and he hadn't gotten anything done. Thankfully, most of these could be finished quickly. The stuff that would take time wasn't due until Friday. "I need to get my calculus done; that's due tomorrow."

"Ah, are you good at math?"

Kunimitsu turned to see Kagome walking by the room, having paused by the door. "I average around a ninety-five."

"That's a 'yes,' then?"

He nodded.

"Think I could bring my homework here, and you could help me with mine? I don't struggle with most subjects, but Math has always eluded me."

He pointed to the chair that was next to the desk against the wall. "Your bag is by the bookcase."

She leaned inside to see her bag. Glancing the girl over, she was dressed in a pair of grey pajama pants and a baggy white t-shirt, her hair was pulled up in a tightly twisted towel.

A glorified co-ed study session that went well into midnight and ended with the two passing out on the desk beside one another. That was how they spent their first night together.
