Poe frowned down at his sketch of the forest surrounding the rundown cabin. When he and Rey first took refuge here, cut off from the rest of the Resistance and hunted down by the First Order, their sole focus had been survival. They'd explored the thickets around them in search of food and water, boarded up the gaping holes in the cabin walls, and repaired the broken radio so they could contact their friends before they abandoned the planet.
But as days became weeks, their attention had shifted. From the coded messages they'd sent over the radio, the Resistance ship was still circling the solar system, waiting for an opportunity to retrieve them, but Poe and Rey both knew that couldn't last forever. Eventually, the ship would run out of fuel, or the First Order would notice and send a fleet to run them off. So Poe and Rey had started venturing out further, mapping out their surroundings and making plans.
The closest First Order outpost was only a dozen miles away. They could get there on foot quite easily, hidden by the forest. They still had their weapons, and they wouldn't have to take out the whole base – just enough to find their starfighters and commandeer one.
From there, Poe and Rey could fly out to meet the Resistance themselves.
The plan was risky. Despite all their preparation, they knew nothing about the layout or staffing of the outpost itself. They could be walking into a landmine for all they knew.
But if they waited too long, they wouldn't just have to get off-world in whatever aircraft they could scavenge; they'd have to escape the entire solar system on their own. Given they didn't even know if they could find a space-worthy, fully fuelled starfighter, Poe didn't like their odds of getting home by themselves.
The front door opened. Thankfully, none of their traps had been sprung, so he knew without looking that it had to be Rey. When he glanced over, she was carrying a basket of mushrooms and two dead rabbits.
'We can't keep waiting for the Resistance to come back,' he said. 'I think we need to go to the outpost.'
She nodded and set her catch down in the kitchen. 'I was thinking the same thing. I'll send a message to make sure they're still up there, then we can head out in the evening.'
Poe nodded. If they timed it right, they could leave themselves enough hours of daylight to traverse the trails and brambles of the forest while making sure they reached the edge just after sunset.
Then, with a little luck, they would be out of this system by midnight.
