Chapter 1
He was never further from my memories than the soft sigh of the sea or the point of a blade. It wasn't fixation nor fantasy, but the honest truth of it: I remembered Captain Jack Sparrow well.
Like the thunder of the rolling storm above, the company of soldiers marched, and with them, they carried a young man and a young woman, dressed for a day of matrimonial bliss. Less evenly, the young man, William Turner, stepped, as his eyes fell upon his to-be bride, Elizabeth Swann. He nearly stumbled over his own feet at the thought of how much of a travesty their wedding had become.
It was rain this morning – we could have been wed in the rain. We could have stayed in the chapel and been content there – but no. Will shuttered at the thought of the echoing sound of the door to the blacksmith shop crashing open. Bitterly his eyes whirled around to peer at the man that walked before them, robed in his dark cape. Damn you, Cutler Becket. The world deals with schemers like you in equal pay.
Rain spilled into his deep cocoa eyes, forcing a blink or two – just enough time for Lord Cutler Becket to turn and begin to make his way elsewhere. When at last his eyes were open again, he looked up to see Elizabeth staring after Becket, whose black shroud billowed behind him in the wind as he made his way towards the docks. Coward, Will thought bitterly.
The battlements rose high before them, seeking to ward off and thoughts of strength to its foes, which, for the second time in his life, Will Turner was. Where he stood now, the first time seemed only a dream. A sweep through the crowd and a few swings of his blade and Jack was free – and he and Elizabeth would pay for it. I saved him twice – but it is me that will pay for it in the end… Where are you, Jack?
