"All of these lines across my face
Tell you the story of who I am
So many stories of where I've been
And how I got to where I am"
This was one of the rare days Keith was alone in the house. Krolia had a day off work and had taken the twins out to the park for the day, a girls day she had called it. Lance was at work until three so Keith had the house to himself. Hence why he was in the studio he had in the basement where his instruments and song books were.
"But these stories don't mean anything
When you've got no one to tell them to
It's true, I was made for you"
He was glad he had listened to his friend's advice and told Lance about his worries, about him being scared of Lance leaving again. His heart was still in the healing process but knowing Lance was here to stay, it made him feel a little better.
"I climbed across the mountaintops
Swam across the ocean blue
I cross over lines and I broke all the rules
But baby, I broke them all for you
Oh, because even when I was flat broke
You made me feel like a million bucks
You do, and I was made for you"
Lance pulled up to the house with a smile on his face. His boss had let him go home early and Lance had time to stop at a specific store to pick something up. Ever since Keith had expressed his anxiety and worries, Lance had a plan to show Keith he had nothing to worry about and that he was here to stay.
"You see the smile that's on my mouth
It's hiding the words that don't come out
And all of the friends who think that I'm blessed
They don't know my head is a mess"
As soon as Lance entered the house, he was confused. The house seemed almost empty, almost. He heard the faint sound of singing coming from the basement, he knew where Keith was. Heading downstairs, he peeked through the cracked open door and saw Keith sitting on the red beanbag chair, a guitar in his arms, and his back to the door.
"No, they don't know who I really am
And they don't know what I've been through
Like you do, and I was made for you"
He smiled as he heard Keith singing, it was something he never got tired of hearing. He loved hearing Keith sing and he knew their girls did as well, given that they asked him to sing them to sleep on most days.
"All of these lines across my face
Tell you the story of who I am
So many stories of where I've been
And how I got to where I am
But these stories don't mean anything
When you've got no one to tell them to
It's true that I was made for you, oh yeah
Well, it's true that I was made for you"
"I don't think I'll ever get tired of hearing you sing," Lance said as he entered the studio room. Keith flinched softly and turned to face Lance, a faint smile on his face as Lance walked into the room and sat on the blue beanbag chair.
"What are you doing home? I thought you weren't off until three," Keith asked as he placed the guitar back on the stand beside him.
"Boss let me off early," Lance said with a shrug. "So, I got you something."
"It's not our anniversary is it?" Keith asked, panic setting in as he thought he forgot.
"No," Lance said with a chuckle and a shake of his head. "That's three months from now."
"Then is there an occasion?"
"Does there have to be a special occasion for me to get you something?" Lance asked with a raised eyebrow.
"No, I guess not," Keith answered with a chuckle. Lance rolled his eyes and pulled a box out of his pocket and placed the velvet box into Keith's hands. "What is this?"
"I know you've been having some anxiety about us lately and I wanted to get you something to help ease some of it," Lance explained as Keith opened the box and his eyes widened seeing a pair of simple silver bands. They reminded Keith of the ring Lance had bought him years ago with their initials engraved onto it.
"A promise ring," Keith said as the pieces clicked into place.
"I think it's still early for us to be thinking about marriage, so I figured this was a better idea," Lance said as he took one of the rings out of the box and took Keith's hand and gently slipped it on his finger.
"There was something engraved in it," Keith said as he caught eye of an engraving. Lance nodded and took the other ring out, showing Keith the inside.
"Te doy mi promesa," Lance said with a smile. "I give you my promise, which I do," Lance said as he slipped the other ring onto his own finger. "I meant what I said that night, I'm not going anywhere. I'm here to stay."
"YOU GOT ENGAGED AND DIDN'T TELL US!?" Allura and Shay yelled in unison.
"Not engaged," Keith said with a shake of his head. It had been months since Lance had given him the promise ring, it honestly hadn't crossed his mind to tell their friends when it happened. Until now, when he was helping Allura get ready for her wedding, along with her mother and her mother happened to see the ring and point it out.
"At least you're not rushing into anything," Shay said with a soft smile.
"And even if Lance was to ask you to marry him, he'd have to go through us first," Allura said with a smile as her mother placed the headpiece where the veil attached to into her hair.
"And Shiro, and Adam, and your mother," Shay said as she started listing names off.
"We get the point," Keith said with a sigh. "You sound like my mother when she saw it."
"Well, I'm not your mother," Shay said with a shake of her head. "But I am your sister."
"Five minutes!" Allura's wedding planner called out as she walked into the room.
"I'll see you out there okay?" Keith said with a smile as he gave Allura another light hug and headed out to his seat beside Lance and the twins.
"Seems like a running theme for me is to sing at my friend's weddings," Keith spoke into the microphone which drew laughter from the crowd. "This one is for the newlyweds, Allura and Romelle. Congratulations you two."
"What's that playing on the radio?
Why do I start swaying to and fro?
I have never heard that song before
But if I don't hear it anymore"
The crowd started cheering as Keith started signing, the band playing behind him.
"It's still familiar to me
Sends a thrill right through me
'Cause those chords remind me
Of the night that I first fell in love to"
When Allura and Romelle first came to him with the idea to sing a song from Grease as their first dance, he was a little confused about the song choice. However, after explaining that they loved the song off of the soundtrack and that was enough to convince Keith.
"Those magic changes my heart arranges
A melody that's never the same
A melody that's calling your name
It begs you, " Please, come back to me"
Please, return to me"
Don't go away again
Oh, make them play again
The music I wanna hear is once again
You whisper in my ear
Oh, my darling, oh"
Keith smiled as he watched Allura and Romelle dance, the videographer and photographer snapping videos and photos as they did. He was happy that Allura found someone to spend the rest of her life with, he remembered how upset and heartbroken she was after her relationship with Lotor ended.
"I'll be waiting by the radio
You'll come back to me someday, I know
Been so long seems since our last goodbye
But I'm singing as I cry"
Keith turned to where Lance and the twins were sitting with Shiro and Adam. Marina was on Lance's lap as he swayed her back and forth to the song, smiles on their faces as they listened to Keith sing. Camilla was sitting on Adam's lap and was doing a similar motion as Lance and Marina.
"While the bass is sounding
While the drums are pounding
Beatings of my broken heart
Will rise the first place of the charts
Oh, my heart arranges
Oh, those magic changes, mmm"
Allura caught his eye and smiled as she and Romelle danced, they had practiced this dance a few times so they would know what they were doing. Both were careful not to step on the other's dress as they danced.
"Those magic changes (ooh) my heart arranges
A melody (la la) that's never the same (la la)
A melody (la la) that's calling your name
And begs you, Please (please), come back to me" (la la la la)
Please, return to me" (la la la la)"
As Keith turned his attention back to where Lance was sitting, he was surprised to find his boyfriend was gone and Marina was now seated on Shiro's lap. However, he forced himself to turn away and focus on the song.
"I'll be waiting by the radio
You'll come back to me someday, I know
Been so long seems since our last goodbye
But I'm singing as I cry"
As there was a music break, Keith turned to Shiro and motioned to where Lance had been sitting with a confused look on his face. However, Shiro just shook his head and smiled. As Keith's part to sing the final chorus of the song came up, he felt a presence beside him and turned to see Lance with a microphone smiling, joining Keith as he finished the song.
"While the bass is sounding
While the drums are pounding
Beatings of my broken heart
Will rise the first place of the charts
Oh, my heart arranges
Oh, those magic changes, woah woah
Woah woah, oh, yeah, ooh"
As the song came to a close, Romelle and Allura stopped dancing and the crowd cheered. Not only for Romelle and Allura but for Keith and Lance as well.
"Before you ask," Lance said as he turned to Keith with a smile. "Allura asked me to sing that final chorus with you."
"Of course she did," Keith said with a roll of his eyes.
When Keith woke up the next morning, he groaned as the sunlight shone through the curtains of the hotel room. God how he hated the burning ball of light in the sky.
"Morning sunshine," Lance called out with a smile as he stepped out of the bathroom with a smile. "Wow, you never sleep in."
"What time is it?" Keith asked as he sat up and rubbed his eyes with a yawn.
"Noon," Lance answered as he pulled on a pair of black jeans and a blue t-shirt. "You slept through breakfast I'm afraid."
"Did the girls have breakfast?" Keith answered as he slid out of bed and ran his fingers through his hair.
"Yep," Lance answered with a nod. "They have been asking about lunch though."
"Of course they are," Keith said with a sigh.
"How about this," Lance said as he walked up to Keith and gave him a kiss. "You go have a shower, I'll get the girls ready and we'll go out for lunch."
"Mmm, as long as you're paying," Keith answered with a smirk. "You have five years to make up for."
"Then it's my treat," Lance said with a smile as he leaned down and kissed Keith once more. "Now go have a shower."
That evening, Keith and Lance dropped the twins off at Shiro and Adam's hotel room and went out to dinner. Lance had heard of this bar in the area and wanted to check it out. Not only did they make killer drinks but they made killer meals as well.
At least, that's what Lance had heard and told Keith.
They were seated as soon as they entered the bar, which surprised Keith considering how busy it was. They were seated a few tables away from the stage but close enough to still see the band playing.
Their food, as Lance had said was killer. The band was equally as amazing, Keith enjoyed some of the songs they were playing.
"And now, we have a special guest joining us for a song tonight," the lead singer announced as he smiled. "Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome to the stage, Lance McClain!"
"Huh!?" Keith asked as he turned to Lance with wide eyes.
"Just watch and enjoy," Lance said with a wink as he headed to the stage, the crowd cheering. They recognized the McClain name and were excited to see what Lance would be singing.
"This song goes out to mi vida, Keith," Lance said as he smiled towards Keith as the band started singing, Keith's cheeks turning red as a few people turned to stare at him.
"Highway run into the midnight sun
Wheels go 'round and 'round, you're on my mind
Restless hearts sleep alone tonight
Sendin' all my love along the wire"
Just as Lance could never get enough of hearing Keith's voice, the same could be said for Keith. He loved hearing Lance sing whenever he did and he wished Lance would sing a lot more.
"They say that the road ain't no place to start a family
Right down the line, it's been you and me
And lovin' a music man ain't always what it's supposed to be
Oh, boy, you stand by me
I'm forever yours
Faithfully"
Keith recognized the song as his father's favourite. It held a special place in Keith's heart as a core memory of his father. His father proposed to his mother by singing this song to her. He was almost certain his mother had told Lance about it as he hadn't told Lance about his connection to the song.
"Circus life under the big top world
We all need the clowns to make us smile
Through space and time, always another show
Wonderin' where I am, lost without you"
Keith smiled as he listened to Lance sing. He was thankful that his heart allowed him room to forgive Lance and give him a second chance. He loved Lance and he knew that Lance loved him.
"And bein' apart ain't easy on this love affair
Two strangers learn to fall in love again
I get the joy of rediscovering you
Oh, boy, you stand by me
I'm forever yours
Faithfully"
Keith let out a chuckle as the crowd started to sing along faintly. Journey was a classic and he was glad many people still enjoyed the classics.
"Whoa-oh, oh-oh
Whoa-oh, oh-oh-oh
Whoa-oh, oh-oh-oh-oh"
Lance motioned for Keith to come up on stage as the song started to end. Keith shyly headed up on stage and grabbed Lance's hand with a small smile.
"Faithfully
I'm still yours
I'm forever yours"
Lance smiled and turned to Keith as he finished the song.
"Ever yours
Faithfully"
The crowd cheered as the song finished and what Lance did next, shocked Keith.
Lance took a velvet box out of his pocket and…
Knelt down on one knee. Keith's eyes widened as Lance slid the promise ring off Keith's finger and pocketed it as tears fills Keith's eyes.
"Keith," Lance started to speak, silencing the cheering crowd. "We've gone through hell up until this point, I've broken your heart but I've also been the one to mend it. I know now that I want to spend the rest of my life with you."
As Lance said his speech, he opened the box to reveal a simple silver ring with a diamond in the middle. Keith was never one for flashy jewelry, a detail Lance always remembered.
"So, will you do me the honour of marrying me?" Lance asked with a smile.
The crowd was silent as they waited for Keith's answer.
"Yes," Keith said softly with a nod, tears spilling down his cheeks. "Yes!" Keith repeated, the crowd cheering as Lance stood up, slid the ring onto Keith's finger and kissed him.
"Oh my god!" the group cried out as Lance and Keith announced their engagement. Allura and Shay grabbing his hand to see the ring.
"Congratulations you two," Pidge said with a smile.
"Did you know he was going to do that?" Keith asked as he studied Shiro.
"Maybe," Shiro said with a smirk. "But so did Allura and Shay."
"So that's why you two were talking about Lance needing permission," Keith said with an accusing glare to the two women.
"And I did ask everyone for their permission," Lance pointed out with a smile.
"So, when's the wedding?" Hunk asked with a smile.
