Welcome back to Adventures of a True Shield-Hero. I hope you have all been well in the gap between the previous chapter and this one.

Just want you to be aware that this chapter is slightly smaller than the previous two. It will make sense once you've read it and seen what it's about.

We are also still in the mid to latter part of the Fall 2022 anime season and the shows I've chosen to watch are still serving up the goods. Chainsaw Man especially is really starting to crank (and yes, I used that word deliberately) it up and I can't wait for the rest of it! And once they are all done, we can begin looking ahead to the packed 2023 calendar that is sure to be just as memorable!

Enough of the rambling, time for Chapter 12! As always, I do not own Rising of the Shield Hero or any of its characters, locations, events or anything else related to the anime/manga/Light Novels. The only thing I own is my OC, Fergus Ward.

For Billy.

Chapter 12 – Time to Recuperate

Before I could fully comprehend the bright lights that were flashing before us or question Kizuna about where we were going, the scenery around the three of us changed again. Next thing I knew, we were deposited in another city hall-style building, almost an exact copy of the one we'd just left behind. Only this time, instead of angry guards rushing to attack us, the people who were gathering around us were simple civilians and what seemed to be officials going about their days as normal. Another thing that was different about them was their clothes since they were mostly wearing clothing that I was more accustomed to seeing back in the European countries of my home world instead of the Japanese-styled trappings that those in the country we'd just behind had been wearing. And also, as we landed, instead of anger and annoyance, these people were greeting us with a mix of curious yet friendly demeanours.

However, as their gazes roved over myself and Rishia and landed on Kizuna, their expressions changed from curiosity to delight and excited mutterings started breaking out.

"No way…is that?"

"It is! I thought she was lost to us forever!"

"It really is you, Lady Kizuna! How did you escape?"

"Welcome back, Lady Kizuna!"

Far from being abashed and embarrassed by these reactions, the girl in question was smiling broadly which, combined with the friendly greetings we'd been about to receive, was more than enough to convince me that we'd ended up in the right place. And judging by the greetings she was being given…not only was this Kizuna's homeland but it seemed that she had a special place in her people's hearts.

I was suddenly struck by a thought and quickly leant in to whisper to Kizuna before she got swallowed up by her countrymen: "Any chance that we could be followed from the other side?"

"Not if they are also using Return Dragon Vein. It can only teleport you to a dragon hourglass you've already visited," she replied as we descended from the Hourglass towards the excited crowd.

"Good," I said, letting out a breath that I didn't know I'd been holding. It seemed for now at least we would be safe…at least until we headed out again in search of the others. "Go on then," I continued with a chuckle as I indicated the eager crowd below. "It seems like several people are very excited to see you."

Kizuna didn't need to be told twice as she leapt over the wooden barrier into the midst of those who had gathered and started greeting them enthusiastically. "Hi there everyone, it's good to be back!" she exclaimed with a beaming smile as she shook hands and even hugged several of them. "I'm sorry if I've worried you all, but know that my absence was not of my choosing."

"We're so pleased to have you return to us Lady Kizuna," one of the more senior-looking officials told her warmly. "We were told the whereabouts of your imprisonment and were worried that you may never return to us. The Prime Minister will no doubt be thrilled also. But please tell us…how did you escape?"

"I wouldn't have been able to leave my imprisonment without the two others you see before you," Kizuna replied as she waved Rishia and I to join her. "Everyone, I would like you to meet Fergus Ward and Rishia. Fergus is a holy hero from another world, the Shield-Hero to be more exact, and Rishia is one of his travelling companions." As she was speaking, Rishia and I had leapt over the barrier and were standing behind her facing the crowd.

However, the second Kizuna mentioned that I was a hero from another world, the faces of everyone around us had fallen, going from warm smiles to suspicious looks in an instant. "Well…shit…that isn't good…"

We weren't the only ones to notice this sudden change in their moods. "Is there a problem here?" Kizuna asked, her own expression turning annoyed by the new air of suspicion that now permeated the room. "Because if there is, I want you all to know right now that he has sacrificed a great deal of effort and put himself at risk to ensure not only my escape but also to get me here in one piece. I suggest you treat both him and Rishia with respect!"

"F-Forgive us, Lady Kizuna! It shall be as you say!" One of the officials suddenly cried out which was echoed by several of those around us.

"Fine, you are forgiven as long as you keep your word," Kizuna snapped, unmollified by their sudden change of tune. "Another thing you can do is explain why you all suddenly acted that way?"

"That's…we…I apologise, but that is not for us to share, even with a Holy Hero such as yourself. Only His Majesty or the Prime Minister can impart such knowledge should you so wish to hear it."

"Then take us to whoever is currently in charge. I want to know what this is all about!" Kizuna's tone elicited no argument from anyone in the room, who quickly cleared a path for us as the officials led us out of the city hall. I had chosen to remain silent throughout, preferring to let Kizuna speak for us and, after their uncomfortable reactions to our revelation, to avoid provoking anyone in attendance. Rishia had become extremely nervous after witnessing their reactions but had calmed down slightly after Kizuna's intervention.

Even though Kizuna had assured us of our safety here, it was still slightly unnerving to be judged so soon after our arrival…mostly because it reminded me of how I'd instantly been judged upon my arrival in Melromarc. Hopefully, the explanation we got would be better this time around.

~AoaTSH~

As we walked the short distance from the city hall to the castle-like structure that dominated the small town around us, I realised that the difference in clothing between this country's citizens and the previous one was no mere coincidence.

Instead of the Japanese-style wooden buildings we'd seen before, the buildings in this area resembled those I'd seen in not only Capital Town, but also the other cities and castle towns I'd visited during my time in Melromarc. Instead of wood, all of these structures were made of stone and resembled those found in central European countries during the Middle Ages. In fact, the castle we were approaching was nearly a carbon copy of a castle found in countries such as France and Germany during those periods: a typical stone keep design surrounded on all sides by a sturdy wall which could only be accessed through a gate and drawbridge built into one of these walls and which was manned on all sides by guards who, upon hearing of our business here, immediately stepped aside and had a runner sent to inform the Prime Minister of our arrival. We were then escorted into the main building and up a few flights of stairs before arriving at the doors of the throne room, where the guards on duty announced our presence before waving us on in.

The throne room we entered was very similar to the one I'd often found myself in in Melromarc, although the trappings and decorations were less stylish and more simplistic and it lacked the viewing galleries the one in Melromarc had. And sitting on a throne that also looked carved from stone but adorned with what appeared to be various metals was a slightly older man with finely groomed white hair and a matching beard, grey eyes and who was currently wearing light blue robes adorned with gold trimmings. As we got closer and as he stood up to greet us, a warm and calming smile on his face, I estimated that this man was either in his fifties or sixties at first glance.

"Lady Kizuna, we are so glad you have returned to us," he greeted us in a smooth tone of voice.

"Prime Minister Valkorius…I am glad to see you are still looking in good health after all these years," Kizuna replied easily with a quick curtsy. "Everything been okay since I was gone?"

"Indeed…the young master has proven himself to be a wise and skilled ruler after succeeding his father, but as you well know he still craves the thrills of adventure, hence why I am often tasked to look after things in his absence," the now-named Valkorius replied with a dismissive wave. "But we can discuss those affairs later. I would first like to hear the tale of how you managed to escape from your imprisonment."

"And I'd be happy to tell you, Prime Minister, but let me first introduce you to those who helped me escape," Kizuna said before turning to us. "Fergus, Rishia…allow me to introduce Valkorius, Prime Minster and interim ruler of Sikul in the absence of its current king. Valkorius…this is the Shield-Hero Fergus Ward, one of the Holy Heroes from another world, and his companion Rishia."

"A pleasure," I greeted with a polite bow as Rishia curtsied next to me. This guy was being courteous at least, and if Kizuna got along well with him, that was enough for me at the moment.

"Yes, I was informed of their identities upon your arrival," Valkorius intoned as he turned to look at us. "Firstly, may I offer my gratitude for your assistance in rescuing Lady Kizuna from her imprisonment. As you have no doubt seen, she is very special to everyone here and we are very happy to have her back. I also wish to convey my apologies for the initial reaction to your arrival. No doubt you wish to know the reasons behind it?"

"That's one of the reasons why we came here," Kizuna interjected, the same annoyed scowl from before on her face as Rishia and I merely nodded in agreement.

"Before I begin, this knowledge is restricted to those who wield vassal weapons. And so, while it can be shared with you because you are one of the Holy Heroes, Lady Kizuna, I must beg you not to share this information with anyone who is not a Vassal or a Holy Hero," he began. After receiving three affirmative nods, he continued. "The first thing you need to understand is that the Four Heroes have a deeper responsibility than simply protecting the people of the world in times of need."

"Don't I know it…" I couldn't help but think back to Ost telling me about how the Heroes of our world also had a purpose in unleashing the Guardian Beasts to hold back the Waves. But I had a feeling that this wasn't what Valkorius was adhering to. If anything, it was more likely to be in regards to what Fitoria had once told me…about how the waves would get stronger if any of the Heroes were missing or dead before it came.

"I assume you are aware of a phenomenon known as 'the Waves' that visit this world, Lady Kizuna?" Valkorius asked, snapping me out of my reverie.

"I am. There's already a countdown for the next one running in my field of vision," she replied shortly.

"And you, Shield-Hero…since you are one of the four Heroes from your world, I'm guessing you know of them as well?"

"I do indeed," I replied.

"But what you may not be aware of is how they came to be. According to our ancient texts, these Waves are phenomena that occur when different worlds momentarily fuse with one another," Valkorius explained.

"That's…that actually makes a huge amount of sense…" It would explain how Glass, L'Arc and Therese could so easily come across to our world, and how I'd been able to catch a brief glimpse of this world during my second battle with Glass.

"I see. Next question then. Why are L'Arc and Glass so hellbent on killing Fergus?" Kizuna asked since I'd told her all about my fights with them during our time together.

"Well according to the legends, it is said that if the worlds are allowed to fuse any further, then the worlds themselves will be destroyed," Valkorius continued. "It is also said that the four Holy Heroes of each world are the keystone of the worlds they represent. When the waves occur and the worlds begin to fuse, it is imperative for the Heroes to survive each Wave. For if the Heroes of a world are lost, then the world itself will be destroyed whilst the lifespan of the other world will increase."

"You're kidding…" Kizuna murmured.

"S-so if we lost all our Heroes, our world would be destroyed?" Rishia asked quietly, a hint of sorrow on her face.

"Well…shit…" I muttered under my breath as the three of us stopped to consider these bombshells. Truth be told, hearing all of this…it was hard to believe. A Hero could extend the life of their own world by killing all the Heroes of the opposing world? Condemning another world…just to preserve our home one…I don't know if I could ever bring myself to do such a thing. The idea of sacrificing the lives of so many innocents just to preserve the lives of our families, friends and loved ones? Those who could understand, process and undertake such ruthless calculus would be a rare breed, and I was definitely not one of them.

Especially if it meant killing Kizuna, someone I now looked upon not only as a travelling companion but as a friend given what we'd been through together. I don't think I could ever bring myself to do it.

And yet this information, if true, meant things would have to change as soon as I got back to my world. Before all this, it had been my understanding that the loss of the Heroes would have only severely weakened the world's defences against the Waves, but now…if myself, Ren, Motoyasu and Itsuki all died, then that world…MY world…would die with them along with everyone I cared about. It was now more imperative than ever for me to not only keep the others alive (a thought that made me sick to my stomach given my utter disdain for Itsuki) but to also make them understand the severity of what we were dealing with (a tall order given how SOME of them still believed this was all some game) and how crucial it would be for us all to get on the same page and stand together not only against the Waves but also any potential threats from the Heroes and Vassal Heroes of this world.

Speaking of L'Arc, Glass and Therese…it now made sense why they were so adamant in trying to kill me. And it also made sense why, especially in L'Arc's case, there'd been grim reluctance in their voices when they told us that we had to die for the sake of their world. They also didn't want to take or destroy innocent lives, but for the sake of their world and the people they cared about…they were still apparently willing to do what they had to.

I looked over at Kizuna, wondering how she was taking the news. "Kizuna…if this is really the truth of things…what would you do for the sake of your world and friends?" As if reading my thoughts, Kizuna met my gaze and shook her head determinedly, a look of fierce determination on her face as she turned her eyes back to Valkorius who was waiting patiently for our reaction.

"So you're telling me that the only way we can survive is to sacrifice another world and its people?!" She spoke, her voice trembling slightly but rising with every word she spoke. "Have you even tried finding another way?"

"Lady Kizuna…I-" Valkorius' next words were cut off as Kizuna continued her tirade.

"Don't bother...I can already guess. But do you really think I would approve of this? And are you really just going to believe everything those legends tell you? Could you at least have done some real research on the issue rather than just accepting the words of some legend that may not even be true?!" She was shouting now, her impassioned words roiling about the room like a sharp breeze and catching everyone in attendance by surprise. "Shouldn't destroying another world be a last resort?! It's not the sort of thing that you should throw yourself into based on a hunch and a few pieces of text! Besides, I can't even attack other people, so even if I wanted to go through with this, I wouldn't be able to! Did you even think about that?!"

"Kizuna…" Not only was I surprised by the venom and ferocity of her words, as was Rishia given her shocked expression, but I was also incredibly touched by the passion she was showing. It was clearly evident that she and I would be of one mind on this issue.

"Y-Yes, I am aware of that Lady Kizuna," Valkorius spluttered. It would seem he was also taken aback by Kizuna's outburst. "But…you see, the four Holy Heroes exist only to defend the worlds they are summoned to. Killing the Heroes of other worlds is a task that falls to those who use the Vassal Weapons."

"That would explain why only the Vassal Heroes can portal between worlds and we can't…" I mused. It had only been due to Ost's power that my party and I had been able to portal through to this world.

"Whether these legends of yours are true or not, it's still way too presumptuous for you or anyone to decide to destroy an entire world just for the sake of preserving our own!" Kizuna continued. "I'm going to find a way to save this world that doesn't involve sacrificing the lives of so many innocent people, and you can also be damn sure I'm going to give Glass and the others a piece of my mind for even thinking this was a good idea! If you know where she or the others are right now, you should tell me!"

"Yes, well…I last heard that Lady Glass had found another revolutionary way to become much stronger than she already was. As soon as the last Wave ended, she took the boy and his companion and went back to the other world…"

"Boy? Does he mean L'Arc? But if what he's saying is true…how come we ended up with them inside the Spirit Tortoise? Did their mission change when they found out with Kyo was up to?"

"I see…and if we match that up with what Fergus has already told me, that would mean that the three of them met up with Fergus and his companions in the other world and then they all came back here…which then means they can't be too far away…" Kizuna then smacked her fist on the open palm of her other hand. "Right then, guess we'll have to find them as soon as we can and let them know about all this."

"Understood, Lady Kizuna…but please, we've only just got you back. I'd hate for anything more to happen to you," Valkorius tried to plead with her one more time. "I implore you to stay in a safe location whilst we conduct our own search for the Vassal Heroes you seek. After all, there is still a chance that this other world's Hero may pose a threat to you…"

Needless to say, the three of us were FURIOUS at what he was implying.

"H-How could you even say that?" Rishia was uncharacteristically mad and it showed, there were no traces of her usual nervousness and squeaking as she spoke. "K-Kizuna is our friend and neither I nor Fergus would even think of hurting her!"

"She is correct. Fergus would never lay a hand on me," Kizuna agreed, her previous rant's venom returning in full force. "More than that, I owe Fergus a great deal for everything he has done for me, including rescuing me from the Labyrinth, and I fully intend to repay him by assisting him in any way I can! And there's nothing you can do or say to change my mind."

I strode forward to the bottom of the stairs leading to the throne and locked my gaze with Valkorius', my one eye piercing through both of his. "Please allow me to make this perfectly clear so that you all understand," I spoke, my voice icy cold. "I'm here for three reasons: first, to reunite with the woman I love and the rest of my friends who came to this world with me. Second, to exact my vengeance on the Vassal Hero Kyo Ethnina for wreaking havoc on my world and reclaim the souls he stole..."

"And who we believe was responsible for imprisoning me in the first place!" Kizuna piped up

"That too…and then once I am done with those two tasks, I will then be looking for a way to return to my world…" I continued. "And I hope you noticed that NONE of what I just said involve murdering any of the Heroes of this world, especially Kizuna who is not only my companion but someone who I also consider a friend. And I do not…and let me repeat this…I DO NOT hurt my friends, a vow that I would stake my very life on. And I have never, EVER, broken a vow or promise I have ever made." I then turned my gaze to everyone else in the room. "I personally don't care what you lot think about me, but I'm telling you flat out to your face that I am not here to destroy your world or harm any of your Heroes. That's how it is…take it or leave it."

Silence reigned over the room once I'd finished my tirade. Judging by the faces of the Prime Minister and the others around us, it would seem we had a mix of those who were actually taking my words into consideration and those who weren't. Thankfully it would seem Valkorius was leaning more towards the former camp if the sudden drop of tension from his expression and stance was anything to go by.

"If Lady Kizuna hadn't already vouched for you, my first reaction upon hearing your identity would have been to imprison you and then make sure you'd never find your way back to your world…" Kizuna growled at his words but Valkorius raised a placating hand as he continued. "However, I can tell by the way you carry yourself, and the determination in both your voice and your gaze that you are both a man of honour and one who can keep his word. And since Kizuna has faith in you, so shall I." His face cracked into a small smile. "As thanks for recusing Kizuna and bringing her back to us…whatever aid we provide you in your mission is yours."

I let out a breath I hadn't realised I'd been holding as I lowered my head in a small bow of thanks. To be honest, I hadn't expected to have an easy time around here before Kizuna's intervention, given how suspicious they all seemed of me. So having them suddenly turn around and offer their assistance was a blessing I would be foolish to pass up.

"Right then! Now that that's all settled, let's decide our next course of action!" Kizuna clapped before turning to face me. "What do you want to do first then, Fergus? Track down Kyo or find your friends?"

"Let's focus on finding my friends first," I decided without hesitation. Not only would we need their help in the battles against Kyo and his allies, but I was also desperate to see Raphtalia again. "After that, we should see if we can locate L'Arc, Glass and Therese and inform them of the situation. And then?" My resulting grin was malicious. "I think it's high time we pay a visit to the Vassal Book wielder and find some answers."

I then turned my gaze to our other party member. "What do you think, Rishia? Does that sound good to you?"

"A-Absolutely! I'll do my best to help you find everyone and defeat Kyo so that we can avenge Lady Ost!" She declared determinedly.

"I knew I could count on you…how about you Kizuna? Are you on board with that?"

"You bet! I promised I'd help you and I intend to see it through!" She answered with a thumbs up.

"If I may offer some input…" Valkorius spoke up. I nodded, inviting him to continue. "Your friends are probably on the run just as you were and will most likely have gone to ground in order to avoid detection, especially if word spreads of your escape. You'll have to make sure your search for them is done as quietly as possible so as not to draw attention to yourselves or them.

"He's right…we're going to have to be very careful in how we do this. Kazuki will no doubt have alerted Kyo about our escape and will most likely put his and the surrounding countries on high alert in order to capture us…" "Any suggestions on how we approach this, Kizuna?"

"I have just the person in mind who can help us with this. He's very good at locating people and I'm sure he'll be able to find your friends very quickly," Kizuna smiled before turning to Valkorius. "Do you know where Ethnobalt is, Prime Minister? It's imperative that we speak to him as soon as possible!"

Valkorius waved one of his ministers over, and after a quick, hushed conversation he nodded before looking back at us. "We should be able to have him here by tomorrow, and I will inform him personally that you wish to speak with him, Lady Kizuna."

"That would be much appreciated," Kizuna curtsied before addressing me once more. "How about we take that time to rest and recharge? And then as soon as Ethnobalt arrives, we can get started on locating your friends."

If Kizuna was right (and I had no reason to doubt her), then it sounded like this guy, whoever he was, would be our best bet. And honestly, after our scuffle with Kazuki and the hair-raising events surrounding our escape from his grasp, a break sounded like a good idea right now. "Sounds like a plan," I replied with Rishia nodding alongside us in agreement.

"Perfect! I have somewhere where we can stay until then." She then turned back to the Prime Minister. "Once I've gotten Fergus and Rishia settled in, I'll come back here and tell you all about my time in captivity, Prime Minister."

"Very well, I will wait for your return." Valkorius then gave me and Rishia a small bow which we reciprocated. "It was nice meeting you Sir Fergus and Rishia, and I wish you well in the search for your friends."

Upon that positive note, we departed the throne room and then proceeded to exit from the castle. Once we were outside, Kizuna motioned for myself and Rishia to follow her to where we would be staying for the rest of today.

~AoaTSH~

The sun was still quite high in the sky as the two of us followed Kizuna out of the small town that was built around the castle and along a long winding road that took us through areas of countryside, signifying that it was still around lunchtime or early afternoon. Still hard to believe that only a few hours had passed since arriving in the last city and clashing with Kazuki since it felt like a lifetime ago given what had happened since then.

I took a good look at the scenery around us as we walked along the country road, only stopping to fight any monsters that came out of the undergrowth to challenge us. The fields of grass with trees dotted here and there, the occasional small pond or brook, and even the gentle breeze rustling through our hair and blowing our cloaks out behind us...it reminded me of the times when it was just myself, Raphtalia, and Filo leisurely rolling through the countryside and villages of Melromarc during my times as a travelling merchant. Speaking of Raphtalia and Filo, I couldn't help but worry for them once again. I just hoped that wherever they, and Keel, were that they were safe and well. Fingers crossed that this Ethnobalt guy that Kizuna had brought up could indeed help us find them.

After a short while, the three of us came upon another small town which, from the looks of it, seemed to be made up of small houses and businesses. If I had to make a comparison…it reminded me a lot of Lute Village back in Melromarc except this one also possessed a fishing harbour much like the one we had back in New Rurorona. And as we walked through town, we passed by many people who were out and about doing their trades or purchasing supplies, and who gave Kizuna nods, grins, and waves as she passed. We then carried on a little further out of town until Kizuna abruptly turned off the main pathway and up another small path that led up to what appeared to be a large two-story stone mansion that looked very homely and inviting at first glance.

"I had this house built a long time ago after I first met Glass and the others. I wanted somewhere large enough so that everyone could come live here," she explained as she pulled a key from her pocket and unlocked the front door. As it creaked open slowly, Kizuna cautiously stepped over the porch and took a quick look around before waving Rishia and I through. As we stepped through, we entered what seemed to be a large parlour designed for greeting guests with a long wooden table and chairs in its centre. In fact, if you combined that with what seemed to be a lounge area off to the side as well as what looked like a kitchen in the back, this was the entirety of the first floor.

"I'm back! Anyone home?" Kizuna called out loudly, but upon getting no response she motioned for Rishia and me to take a seat whilst she went through the house to check for any sudden intruders. And as we sat down, I let out an exhausted sigh, realising how much the previous few hours had sapped from me. In fact, judging by the way Rishia was almost nodding off after taking a seat, it appeared that we could both benefit from taking a few hours just to nap.

"Looks like it's just the three of us," Kizuna announced a short while later as she rejoined us in the waiting area. "Interestingly there's not a speck of dust or cobwebs anywhere around us. I was half expecting us to have to give this place a one-over just to make it hospitable but there's no need. Everything's just as I left it before I got imprisoned."

"You reckon people came in and cleaned it for you whilst you were gone?" I asked as I took a glance at our surroundings, noticing a few photographs in upright flames on a shelf in the corner of the parlour.

"Probably…she is the sort to be particular sort of thing…" Kizuna's reply trailed off as I went over and took a closer look. The majority of the ones on display were of Kizuna and Glass, though there were a few with L'Arc, Therese, and other people I didn't recognise in them as well. What struck me the most about these photos was how cheerful and happy everyone appeared to be, with each photograph conveying a palpable sense of friendship. It reminded me of the bonds I'd formed with my party members, and how each of our experiences had brought us so close that we were...pretty much like a family now, rather than just a close-knit group of friends.

And as I thought about them, I felt another stab of pain in my heart as it dawned on me how much I missed them all. It was nice to have Rishia around because she was such a lovely and sweet person who I already considered a good friend...but it wasn't the same as what I felt with the others. Raphtalia, of course, being my girlfriend and the love of my life... Filo, whom I'd hatched and raised from her egg and to whom I felt akin to a father. Then there was Keel, who exuded a cool sister vibe that put everyone at ease. Aside from them, there was also Melty, who is like that distant cousin you don't see very often, but when you do, it's always a good time with lots of teasing, and who also has that sisterly bond with Filo.

Looking at all these photos of Kizuna and her friends…I resolved that when we got back to my world, I'd find the means to produce similar photos and have them line the shelves and walls of our dwellings to make sure that we could always remember the good times we'd shared. Even just thinking about some of them…almost brought a tear to my eye…

"I see you found the photos of…hang on…Fergus, are you crying?" My reverie was interrupted as Kizuna joined me over by the photos.

"Sorry…just seeing all these photos just reminded me how much I miss my friends…and made me think of getting some of these myself when I get back home…"

Kizuna gave me a sad smile. "They sound like some wonderful people if they mean that much to you. I'm looking forward to meeting them after what you've told me about them." She then turned to look at the photos herself, a misty look passing her eyes as she recalled the memories behind each one. "And then of course there's all my friends who I haven't seen in years…I've missed them all so much…"

"You'll see them again Kizuna, just like I'll see mine again. Just you wait…we'll all have one big tearful reunion and then we can all come and hang out here and create another good memory." As I spoke, I wrapped my left arm over Kizuna's shoulders and pulled her gently into my side. She didn't resist as she snaked her arm around my waist, and for a while, the two of us just stood there looking at the photographs in silence, the only sound around us being Rishia's gentle breathing in her sleep.

"Hey, Kizuna?"

"Hm?"

"I know we're having a nice moment now but I was wondering if I could ask you something?"

"Sure."

"I know you told us a bit about your life here after you got summoned, but I'm curious to know about the specifics of how you came to know Glass and the others and about the times you spent together? You don't have to tell me anything private or stuff you'd rather not have me know."

"Deal, so long as you give me details about how you met your companions." I nodded my agreement. "Glass and I have known each other for a very long time. I remember when I first ran into her…" She told me how, like the other three Heroes from my world, she thought she'd been teleported into a game when she first arrived in her new world. So she spent the first few days doing nothing but fishing and thinking about levelling up. The country's monarchy provided her with plenty of funds but not much else at the time because they were in the midst of a succession battle.

Her and Glass' first meeting had actually taken place in a neighbouring country. The disciples of a famous martial arts school had been in the middle of a ceremony to determine who would inherit the title and responsibilities of the Vassal Fan wielder, and whoever was chosen to use the fan would then have to kill a dragon that was hunting in the nearby lands.

However, Glass had been denied consideration at first due to her birth. But after many of the disciples had been turned down for one reason or another, Glass had eventually been selected to use the weapon. But when I interrupted to ask what she meant exactly by the status of her birth, Kizuna had given me a very serious look and told me that that was Glass' story to tell if she chose to. She then continued the story as she explained that all of the disciples who'd been passed over had gotten very resentful over the slight, so much so that they all got together and effectively cut ties with Glass by telling her not to come back after her trial.

"Assholes…" I muttered under my breath. How petty could some people be? Cutting ties with someone just because they were chosen over you? If I'd been in one of their shoes, I'd have told them to cry some more and gone on to help Glass however I could.

"Honestly, I think they were counting on Glass dying during the trial, and that one of them would have been chosen to succeed her," Kizuna replied, having heard my mutter. "Didn't matter in the end though since they all came to fight amongst themselves anyway."

"Serves them right…" "How does this all lead to you and Glass meeting up?"

"Oh, right…well, she was fighting monsters out in the fields of that country and I just so happened to be walking by at the time. After we defeated them, we hit it off right away and decided to team up. That's…really about it."

"Seriously?" I wasn't entirely convinced even if I did trust Kizuna. "You hit it off after defeating just one monster? Don't get me wrong Kizuna, I believe you but…you and Glass seem to be two very different people. I mean…you are very upbeat, cheerful and sociable, whereas Glass, from what I've seen from her, is very serious and doesn't really say much."

"No, I can see why you'd think that. Glass is very serious when she's on the job since she takes great pride in being one of the Vassal Heroes and has very high expectations of the rest of us, regardless of whether we're the Holy or Vassal Heroes," Kizuna reassured me. "When she's around the rest of us and we're not on a mission or anything, she can actually be just as friendly and joyful as I am right now."

"I'll see it when I believe it…" The thought of Glass actually cracking a smile still sounded unbelievable.

"After we started adventuring together, we met up with L'Arc, Therese and the others you see here, and as a result, our party grew. It was a wild ride for the most part, but no matter what we were doing we always ended up having fun," she continued, indicating everyone in the photographs. "And I know one day soon we'll all reunite and continue creating fun memories…" She trailed off, her expression wistful once more before suddenly turning her gaze to me. "Now then Fergus, I've held up my end of the bargain. Now it's time for you to do the same. I want to hear the stories of how you met Rishia and the rest of your friends."

"And I'll be happy to tell you all about them, but weren't you supposed to get back to the castle and tell your story to the Prime Minister?" I reminded her. "If you don't get back there soon, he might suspect me of foul play and send out a search party."

"Drat, I almost forgot. Fine, I'll head there now." She then jabbed a finger in my chest. "But don't forget our deal. As soon as I come back, we'll continue this conversation. Got it? Good! Get some rest in the meantime!" With a wave, she ran out of the front door of the house and, upon activating her Return Transcript skill, disappeared in a flash of yellow light.

While Kizuna was back at the castle telling the Prime Minister her story, I took her advice and followed Rishia's example by getting a few hours of shut-eye, but instead of collapsing in a chair as Rishia had, I found a spare bedroom that had all its necessities and took my kip there.

When I awoke, the light had completely vanished from the sky, indicating that the day was coming to an end. I got out of bed and walked around the house looking for Rishia and Kizuna. Rishia was easy to spot because she'd taken up residence in Kizuna's study, where she was surrounded by a large library of books and was currently writing something. When I asked, she said she was making notes about what we'd learned so far in this world and how it might be useful to us back in our world. I then followed up by asking if Kizuna had returned yet. Rishia told me that she had, but had headed out again not too long ago with her weapon to catch dinner and had told Rishia to tell me where she had gone.

I thanked Rishia and headed out of the house in the direction Kizuna had gone. After making my way back through the town we had passed through earlier, I spotted what appeared to be a beach in the distance. Making my way there, I saw her sitting on the sides of a pier, a lamp by her side and her fishing rod in her hands. As I approached, she was just fitting a new lure to her rod and was about to cast it into the water when she spotted me coming.

"Was wondering when you'd show up. Have a good sleep?" She asked as she beckoned me over.

"I did thank you. Catching dinner?" I asked, taking a seat next to her.

"Yup! There's not much out here except for herring, but that'll be enough. There're a few more exotic species in deeper waters, but you have to really keep an eye out for them."

"Then I'll leave that to you then. I don't have my Fish Shield back yet nor did I bring my fishing rod from my world."

"You enjoy fishing too?" She asked as she cast her lure out into the water.

"At first it was just another necessary job to ensure we had food in order to survive, but over time I did come to enjoy it." We watched the lure for a while but nothing bit. "How did the meeting with the Prime Minister go?"

"Nothing too exciting…we just went over in detail how I got imprisoned, my escape and how I got back here. I also told him about the Vassal Book Hero, Kyo, and that genius we ran into who told us he was in league with him. Needless to say, he wasn't very happy about either of their actions and mentioned that he'll examine any options to either impede them or the country they are aligned with either politically or economically. He also reassured me that as well as getting Ethnobalt to us tomorrow, he'll give us any aid we'll need."

"That's reassuring to know after our earlier issues."

"Oh, and he said he'll spread the word that even though you're a Hero from another world, you aren't here to destroy it or kill anyone. Hopefully, that'll keep even the most vocal of protestors off our backs as we carry out our-Hey! I got something!" She paused her dialogue to focus instead on the lure that was shaking about now that it had got a bite. With strong yanks and pulls, she was able to easily reel the fish in and pull it out of the water. "Awesome! That's another herring we can eat!" She then proceeded to gut and clean it rapidly before setting it on the small pile she'd caught so far.

"You're really good at this," I marvelled as she attached a new lure to her rod. This one had a shining green jewel attached to it.

"Yup! Whenever I had spare time, I spent most of it fishing. It's an activity I really enjoy and it helps me relax if I'm feeling bored or stressed," she replied as she cast the lure out. She then removed one of her hands from the pole and poked me none too gently. "Now enough stalling…spill! I want to hear more about your friends and how you met them!"

"I wasn't stalling, promise!" I said with a chuckle as I started to tell her about the circumstances surrounding how I got to know my party members.

I quickly went back over the sham trial and false accusation and how that led me, albeit in desperation, to a slave trader who was Raphtalia's owner at the time, and after agreeing to purchase her I formed a slave contract with her that bound her to me for as long as the mark persisted. Just like Keel, Kizuna was aghast about my actions but was mollified when I quickly told her that I'd had no intention of treating her as my slave and how instead I'd fed her, cleaned her up, gotten her some equipment and protected her as she learnt how to fight, and how her initial wariness of me turned quickly to a working partnership and then to a deep friendship. I provided a quick overview of her past before she met me before continuing with my duel with the Spear Hero and how that brought myself and Raphtalia closer together, our following adventures that only served to strengthen our bond, including our mission to Rabier's base and bringing her face to face with her past, and then the end of our time on the run and the sequence of events that led up to our shared confession of each other's feelings followed quickly by her surprised reaction when she learnt that I was rebuilding her village and our time as Lord and Lady of said village.

"So adorable!" Kizuna exclaimed once I finished, a beaming smile on her face. "The bond you two have…is really something special after all you've been through together. She sounds like an amazing person and I can't wait to meet her!"

"Same, I think she'll really like you as well," I agreed as I then told her about how I met Filo, quickly going over how I hatched from an egg and explaining what a Filolial was before firing through a few stories from our time together, including her 'coming of age' moment against Fitoria and being confirmed as the next Filolial Queen. This was followed by Keel's tale, where I explained how I rescued her from Rabier's dungeon and brought her in as a member of my party, followed by how impressed I was at her strength and resilience after all she'd been through and how integral she'd been as part of my village as well as a friend. And then finally I told her what I knew of Rishia's story before I'd recruited her to my party and retold, with bitterness, the circumstances surrounding her expulsion from the Bow-Hero's party along with the state she was in afterwards before finishing up with how far she'd come since then and how much she'd been able to come out of her shell as well as the unique gifts that the Bow-Hero had seen fit to ignore.

Throughout all of it, Kizuna had merely listened with rapt attention, only interrupting when she was unsure about a certain topic and needed some clarification. And throughout it all, she wore an awed expression that never shifted for even a second.

"Wow…I'd gotten a quick impression from what you and Rishia told me before about how much they meant to you, but hearing all of this now…it sounds like you've surrounded yourself with a group of very special people Fergus," Kizuna commented once I was done. "And if L'Arc and Therese, even despite the mission they were on, had gotten very attached and friendly to them during your brief time together then that speaks even better of them. I can now understand why you are so eager to be reunited with them, especially with Raphtalia of course!"

"It'll be as I said earlier…we'll get everyone back together and make some more good memories under your roof," I told her with a fond smile. "And thank you not only for listening but for asking as well…it was nice to be able to tell you all about those dear to me." I then looked back at her, my one eye meeting both of hers. "You know Kizuna…we may have only known each other for just over a week but…is it weird for me to say that I already regard you as a friend? I mean, the way we hit it off almost instantly, how comfortable we seem around one another and the fact I didn't mind one bit in telling you all about my friends...in almost no time at all you've become very important to me…so much so that even if I had to strike you down for the sake of my world…I don't think I could bring myself to do so. Do you feel the same?"

Kizuna looked back over the water for a moment, considering, before realigning her gaze with mine as a warm smile crept onto her face. "I do," she replied softly. "After all my time alone in the Labyrinth, actually having another human being around to talk to was an experience I'd missed so much. Not only that but you and Rishia were both so accepting of me from the start. Add in that you gave me a hug straight away after hearing my story? I knew deep inside myself that you were someone who I could rely on and who might be able to get me out of the situation I was trapped inside. Not only did you do that, but without your merchant skills and your assistance in the fight against the genius and his guards, I would have had a torrid time getting back to my home. You have done more for me in a few days than most have in my life which I am so grateful for…in fact, you may have saved my life by doing all you've done for me. So yes Fergus…I do feel the same. I do see you as a close friend, and I swear I will do everything in my power to not only help you reunite with your girlfriend and the rest of your party but to also help you get revenge on the guy you're after and who we believe was responsible for putting me away in the first place. You have my word, and my word is my bond that I'll never break."

As she spoke, I smiled at her. Even though being away from some of the others was still difficult, it hadn't been all bad. I'd had Rishia by my side, and having to rely on her to fight those earlier battles had given her a little more confidence. And now that she'd regained the majority of her levels, her magic would be invaluable in dealing with what lay ahead. In addition, I now had Kizuna, the cheerful and eternally upbeat Hunting Hero, to not only guide us through this new world but also as a trustworthy friend and comrade.

I still had some good fortune at least to have such wonderful people by my side. And it would only get better once we added Raphtalia, Filo, Keel, L'Arc, Therese and even Glass back into the mix.

I inched over and wrapped my arms around Kizuna once more, pulling her into a warm hug that conveyed all of my joy and positive feelings for her. She didn't hesitate to return the hug, and for a few moments, we just sat there wrapped in each other's arms, both of us taking comfort in the fact that, even though we were separated from those we loved the most, we were at least in the company of those we could count on.

As soon as we were ready, we collected the fish she had caught and returned to her house, where we cooked them for dinner. Kizuna's cheerfulness helped coax the shy Rishia out of her shell enough to share some friendly and engaging conversation with us both during the meal that followed. If this meal between the three of us was enough to make a good memory, then that potential meal with three times the number of people involved promised to be a time we would never forget, and would serve as additional motivation for the days and events to come.

And that's another chapter in the books! I hope you all enjoyed!

Now you are probably wondering why I didn't get into the introduction of Ethnobalt and Filo's rescue in this chapter? Two words: Light Novel. Having that as an added source of reference along with anime has really helped me get into so much more detail and given me lots of inspiration for how I can plan write and out the events that may have only been given a few minutes worth of attention of anime as solid excerpts in my story. Instead of barrelling through some sections as I did with the first story where I was only referencing the anime, I can give some light and expand upon some minor scenes and give them a life of their own here. Rest assured, Ethnobalt will be with us at the start of the next chapter!

For example, having a solid confrontation with the Prime Minister right at the start, and yes there are two things to note there: First, I know who the King is, we'll get to that in time! And second, there was no name for them in the light novel so I flexed a small bit of creativity. Sikul sounds close to Zakuul from Star Wars: The Old Republic and Valkorion is the Eternal Emperor of Zakuul. Take out and replace a few letters and we get Valkorius, Prime Minister of Sikul! I know, I am not very creative so I get away with slightly altering the references I make.

I also wanted to take some time to strengthen the bond between Fergus and Kizuna, so having their two scenes in Kizuna's home and by the river helped me do that. I really enjoyed Kizuna's time in the anime adaptation and wanted to show her some love here by giving her and Fergus a close relationship. These two are gonna be a formidable team now and in the future!

As always, no promises as to when the next chapter will arrive but it will come when it's ready. Until then, thanks again for reading and showing love for this story. This is theoneandonlyedster signing out for now and I will see you next time!

The fallen captain lifted his head and pissed himself when he beheld the livid visage of an imposing warrior in black and golden armour looming over him, his presence alone suffocating him and making him sweat profusely.

"So, this is the holy duty of knights huh?" The warrior demanded of the fallen captain, his teeth clenched so hard that it was a miracle they didn't turn to powder. "Terrorizing the innocent, slaughtering fathers and husbands, stealing from villagers and taking defenceless women from their homes?!"
