Chapter 25
It has been several months since Ash has left his home in Pallet Town to become a Pokémon Trainer. And he has seen many different places, met many different people, and come to experience many treasured memories that he will never forget. But one thing that he would certainly like to forget, was how often him and Brock got lost.
"We sure have traveled a long way!" Brock said aloud, ignoring the pair of Pidgey that flew through the branches on the trees beside them.
"But we have to get to the next Gym so we can get another Badge!" Ash replied excitedly. The five Badges pinned to the underside of his jacket patted against his shirt as he stopped, almost as a reminder for him that they wanted more friends.
"Well, Fuchsia Gym isn't too far from here," his traveling companion told him with his hands on his hips. "It's just over the mountain." Both him and Ash looked at the path ahead, and they took in their surroundings from left to right. He could have been referring to any mountain, seeing as there were at least two just within their range of sight. A silence passed between them before Brock took out his trusty map and gave it another glance. "The map says the Fuchsia Gym's on the other side of one of those mountains over there." He hesitated, and Ash peered over his shoulder as his finger traced the lines that showed the path. "Is it this way, or that way? Or maybe it's that way... Oh great; we're surrounded by mountains on every side!"
A bead of sweat dripped down the side of the older teen's face, and his eyebrow twitched in annoyance. It seems they were lost yet again. A frown curled down the corners of Ash's mouth, and he let out a sigh.
"Wait a minute," Brock piped up. "It looks like there's a road here." It was better than nothing, and the pair instantly perked up slightly.
"Well, let's hit it!" Ash agreed. The pair only took a handful of steps forward before suddenly, a huge explosion rocked the very earth they walked upon. Branches and chattering from wild Pokémon followed suit as the wildlife scattered from the sudden noise, and Ash dove to the ground and tucked his hands over his head out of instinct, but the echoing noise soon stopped after a few moments.
Picking themselves up off the ground, Ash and Brock had their eyes to the skies in case another followed, and after some time, another explosion sounded, this one coming from farther away. "It's over there!" the Pokémon Trainer cried, and him and Brock rushed ahead through the forest. In a complete opposite way the tranquil forest was moments ago, it was now in complete disarray from the scattering Pidgey and Rattata.
As they got to the edge of the forest, they gasped as they peered down at the road below. A four foot drop on either side gave way to the road that was on Brock's map, but it was paved and overrun by large supply trucks with tires as tall as Ash. The roars of their massive engines and truck after truck made it almost seem like a parade, but the fact that all these trucks were driving on a paved road in the middle of the mountains threw the Pallet Town Trainer off.
Watching the single-file line of supply and concrete trucks go by, another explosion boomed, and further up ahead, which seemed to be the truck's destination as evidenced by the skeleton of a giant structure being put up in between two plateaus, some of the rock up ahead gave way. The explosion was man-made; the result of dynamite.
Suddenly as they showed up, the truck in the front rolled over onto its side as if it were pushed by an invisible force. No, pushed was not the right word. The truck actually rolled as if one of its wheels got caught in a sinkhole. And as Ash looked closer, he realized that was actually correct as sinkholes opened up in the ground through various spots, making the trucks roll. The trucks that were lucky enough to not get stuck were forced to skid to a stop, but the sudden sinkholes swallowing up the surrounding trucks didn't give them enough room to stop in time, and the vehicles piled over each other. The sound of metal crunching against metal and ground followed, and kicked up dirt as the wheels continued to move, but the trucks remained stationary.
Ash and Brock were shocked at the scene, and their mouths hung open. "This is terrible!" the Pokémon Breeder exclaimed. The engines shut off for most of the trucks, as the drivers knew they weren't going anywhere, and when they did, a chanting could be heard, coming from nowhere and everywhere at the same time. Ash and Brock's eyes scanned the area as they heard the quiet mumbling of a song like workers on a railroad. Suddenly, a bit of movement caught the Pokémon Trainer's eye, and where the concrete stopped ahead of the trucks, a small brown creature popped its head out of the ground.
"Diglett!" it cried with delight. And after taking a peek at the destruction behind it, it gave another cry and disappeared back underground.
Ash's gaze lingered on the hole that the Pokémon came out of, and when it didn't pop back up, he turned as one of the trucks opened its door, and a man wearing a blue construction uniform and wearing a yellow hardhat came slinking out of the door. The bearded man looked exhausted, and he stumbled out for a moment before falling onto his knees and slamming his fist against the ground. "I just can't take it anymore!" he screamed in exasperation.
"Are you all right?" Ash asked him when both him and Brock rushed up to the man, but while his physical health seemed fine, it was his mental health that was deteriorating.
"It's the Diglett!" he screamed with his hands in the air. "They're destroying everything!"
"The Diglett?"
"See?! They're right over there!" He pointed and gave a cry that made him sound like this grown man was on the verge of tears. Ash followed his finger, and in the distance, he could see more of the small brown Pokémon rising up and down out of the ground in time with the song they were chanting.
"Diglett Dig! Diglett Dig! Diglett Dig!"
"Thanks to them, we can't finish building that dam!" The foreman bit at his shirt in an attempt to suppress a scream, but failed in doing so and scratched his helmet so hard that it shattered on the top and revealed the top of his head. "I hate Diglett! I hate them!"
"Hmm, Diglett..." Ash muttered, retrieving Dexter to tell him about the strange Pokémon.
"Diglett. The movement of these Ground Pokémon can be easily detected by their tracks of upturned earth."
Ash's eyes turned upward from the screen of his Pokédex, but all he saw was pavement. "I don't see any upturned earth..."
"That's because the ground here is covered by concrete..." the foreman answered through a reddened face and eyes. "But if you look closely..." At his words, by the trucks wheels, the pavement began to crack right before their very eyes.
"They're underneath," Ash observed with his hands on his hips.
"And it looks like we'll never be able to accomplish our dream of building the great Giva Dam right here in these mountains."
"Giva Dam?"
"Over there..." The man had now succumbed to depression, and was slumped on his hands and knees, but pointed over to the skeleton of the huge structure. There were several men and some trucks in the distance crawling on it like an ant farm, and they heard a yell before another explosion rocked the forest and part of the plateau near it crumbled.
"That blasting is part of building a dam?" Brock questioned, which angered the foreman out of his depression.
"YES THE BLASTING IS PART OF BUILDING A DAM!" He suddenly jumped inches away from Ash's face in exasperation, and the boy stumbled backwards in shock, though the foreman didn't seem to notice in his rage. "But we can't get supplies through because of Diglett!"
"Hmm, that is a problem..." Brock replied as the man stomped the ground like a child throwing a tantrum. The pair looked at the destruction caused before their very eyes, and it was actually impressive that such a collection of small Pokémon could have caused this.
"We even created a special division for developing strategies to fight off the Diglett," the foreman continued with his face towards the ground. "We're calling for any able Pokémon Trainer who's traveling through the area – somebody with real Pokémon know-how – who can help us get rid of these Diglett." From the pocket of his uniform, he pulled out a pamphlet depicting a beautiful hotel featuring steaming hot springs and a collection of tickets. "The reward is a six night, seven day stay at the famous Give Hot Springs Resort. If you know any Poké-"
"We're two able Pokémon Trainers at your service!" Ash volunteered bashfully, and unknowing to him, Brock frowned behind him.
"Oh, so you're the first squad of Trainers we called in!" the older man said, smiling for the first time since they had met him.
"Uh, well, we weren't exactly called in..." Before Ash could explain further, the sound of motors approaching and tires screeching to a halt on the asphalt interrupted him, and he looked up to see a ruby red convertible in the lead of four giant buses skidding around the line of trucks that were buried and piled on top of each other in the middle of the road.
"The first Pokémon Trainers have arrived!" a familiar voice called out, and Ash focused his eyes on the red convertible to see Gary Oak standing over the front windshield of the car. The cheerleaders that had been with him on his first day of departing Pallet Town filled the other seats of the car. Eyes focused on the foreman, Gary gestured to the vehicles behind him. "The rest are in these buses!"
"It's Gary..!" Ash muttered in surprise.
Hearing his name, the other Pallet Town Trainer narrowed his eyes as he looked past the older man. "Huh? Who are..." But then, as his dark eyes fell on Ash, his trademark smirk curled his mouth. "Well, if it isn't little Ash from Pallet. What are you doing here?" Ash flinched back, and Gary continued. "It must just be an unlucky coincidence – only the best were invited. Like me: Gary from the town of Pallet – the number one Trainer!" Gary put a hand on his chest and looked at the sky as he said this, and then reached out and pointed at Ash. "Ash is fourth."
"I'm fourth?! I'm better than that!"
"You may have been the second to leave home, but as a Trainer, you're dead last." Ash could only recoil at Gary's stinging words as his rival continued. "Now, watch as I step up to the plate and hit a Pokémon grand slam!" He held out a Poké Ball proudly, and his cheerleaders cheered loudly and threw confetti into the air around him.
"Detestable..." Brock murmured with his arms crossed as Ash slumped to the floor.
"So Ash, have 'ya picked up any good Pokémon?" Gary's query perked Ash up instantly, and he smiled and held up a Poké Ball of his own.
"Of course I have!" he replied. "Do you want to see?"
"No thanks, Ash," Gary answered with a wag of his finger. "Only amateursshow off their Pokémon. If I were gonna show something off, it'd be my personal fan club." He gestured back to the line of young women behind him, each of them stepping out of the vehicle and stepping in time to their song.
"Gary Oak! Gary Oak! He comes through when others choke!"
"Are they... Pokémon?" Ash asked with a finger scratching his cheek, and this was soon met with a swift strike in the head by Brock.
"Don't be dumb!" the former Gym Leader exclaimed, and as Ash fell to the ground again – this time holding his head – Brock smiled at Gary. "So, who are the girls?"
"Oh, they're just some friends of mine," the Pallet Town prodigy answered with his nose in the air.
"They're nice friends," Brock replied quickly, and bowed to the girls while giving them a charming smile. "How would you lovely young ladies like to get together with me sometime?"
"Yes, sir! That would be fun!" they replied at the same time from their perch on the side of the car. The response wasn't quite what Brock wanted to hear, and he, too, slumped slightly.
"Yes sir?" he mumbled to himself. "Okay, so they think I'm an old man. But I don't care; I'm desperate!" Much more loudly, he shot back up and held out an address book. "Could I have someone's phone number, please? Maybe an address? Email?"
"CAN WE PLEASE GET BACK TO THE BUSINESS AT HAND?!" the hairy foreman screamed, interrupting the conversation. "Somebody's got to get rid of these Diglett!" On the brink of insanity, the foreman soon began to throw paper flyers into the air so they rained down over the road like snow. "Don't forget: a resort vacation!"
"Don't give it another thought, sir," Gary assured him with a nervous smile and his hands on his hips. "Those Diglett are as good as gone now that Gary Oak is on the case." Jumping back into the car he arrived in, he shut the door and waved sarcastically to Ash and Brock. "So long, losers!" And as the car skidded away towards the construction site with one of the cheerleaders behind the wheel, his laugh echoed through the forest until he disappeared from view.
"What about those numbers?" Brock whined with his address book blank and open, but beside him, Ash was focused on something else.
"We're losers?!" he exclaimed, and lowered his head as his whole body quivered with rage. "Oh, I can't let him beat me, I can't!"

They weren't officially invited, but the foreman did say that all able-bodied Pokémon Trainers could participate in trying to defeat the Diglett. However, for Ash, the reason he stayed wasn't for the Diglett part of it and more for keeping an eye on his rival. It had been quite some time since he had encountered him, and he wanted to see just how strong Gary got. Not to mention he had talked down to Ash once again.
They all gathered at the construction site. All of the Pokémon Trainers came out of the bus like a swarm of locusts. Ash didn't recognize a single one of them, but everyone all kind of blended together after a bit.
"We greatly appreciate all of you talented Pokémon Trainers interrupting your training to come here and help us get rid of the Diglett!" the foreman called up front, standing on top of a wooden crate for height over the crowd and using a megaphone to amplify his voice.
"There sure are a lot of people here..." Ash commented mostly to himself than to Brock who was standing beside him. His eyes looked around, but he quickly lowered his head into his shoulders in shame as the man shouted loudly at him.
"You with the red and white cap on your head! Listen with your ears, not your mouth!"
"You'd think the least he could do is yell at me by my name..." the Pallet Town boy grumbled with his eyes down at his shoes, and soon he knelt down when he could feel the eyes gazing upon him. "My name is Ash Ketchum, the loser from Pallet."
"Don't listen to Gary!" Brock encouraged his friend. "You can still catch up!"
The construction worker pulled a string beside him, and a banner featuring Diglett with a navy cross through its body was unveiled. It was clear he really went all out for this rally. Pointing up at the banner behind him, he continued. "Pokémon Trainers, here you see Diglett, the greatest parasitic Bug Pokémon of this century!"
"Just a minute!" Gary's voice called out from the front of the crowd, and Ash could see his rival's hand in the air to grab the man's attention. "Technically, Diglett is not a Bug Pokémon. As a matter of fact, the term Mole Pokémon would be more appropriate. With a height of eight inches and a weight of two pounds, they're hardly candidates to be called the greatest anything of this century."
"That show-off thinks he knows everything..." Ash whispered with disgust through pouted lips.
"They may seem to be weak, but together they can destroy..." The man trailed off as the moving of earth could be heard coming from behind them. One by one starting from the back row, each Trainer started to turn around, and there was a slight rumbling beneath their feet. "It's the Diglett! It's the Diglett!" the foreman screamed, and soon the Diglett's chanting was audible. Soon, a trail of upturned earth started to move toward the line of buses that were parked, and within seconds, the one nearest the end fell over onto its side as the ground gave way under its massive tires. Through the dust and debris that was kicked up from the massive vehicle falling over, shadows started to move up and down in the earth, and the sound of Diglett's calls was showing that the herd was mocking them.
"I'll take care of this!" Gary declared, moving through the crowd and closer to the Diglett.
"Gary doesn't dig the Digletts!" his cheerleaders began to sing as he drew a Poké Ball from his belt.
"Now everyone will be able to see the top Pokémon Trainer in action!" Lifting the Poké Ball to his face, he kissed the red part of the sphere before rearing his arm back. "This should do the trick!" Throwing the Poké Ball out, it clattered to the ground before opening. He chuckled as the ball opened, and a burst of white light was released from the inside, but instead of forming into a Pokémon, the plasma turned red, and was drawn back into the Poké Ball, which then locked shut. "Hey, what?!"
Silence filled the crowd as all eyes were stuck on the Poké Ball. Was it a glitch in the Poké Ball itself? "It won't come out; what's wrong?" Ash questioned.
Freshly-turned earth brought the Poké Ball a bit higher up, and it started to move back towards Gary, who just stared on with his face frozen in surprise. When the ball reached his feet, a Diglett popped its head out of the ground with the Poké Ball balancing on it. "Diglett!" the Ground-type said to him.
"Oh, thanks!" Gary thanked with a nervous smile, retrieving his Poké Ball with his free hand while the other scratched the back of his head. Reality quickly set in, and he stomped his foot on the ground and yelled. "Wait! This can't happen!"
Replacing the Poké Ball with another one, he gained his trademark smirk back, and as his cheerleaders began to cheer once again, he held it up. "Okay, I can take care of this. I'll just bring out... my best Pokémon. You can handle it!" This time, he brought the Poké Ball to his mouth three times before throwing it out. "Go get 'em!" The Poké Ball clattered to the ground and opened up, but the energy inside barely made it past the control button before turning red and drawing back inside the ball. "What's going on here?" he exclaimed as confusion danced across his face. This was soon replaced with anger, and he began to chuck out the remainder of his Poké Balls out wildly. "All right, I'll show 'em... I'll use every Pokémon I have!"
"Please, somebody stop them! Stop the Diglett!" the foreman shrieked through the megaphone. This was the other Pokémon Trainer's cues. Each of them produced a Poké Ball as well, and indistinct chatter flooded the area as each of them threw a Poké Ball and called upon their Pokémon. The red and white spheres littered the area, but this time, not a single one of the capture devices opened at all. And just like it had with Gary's, the Diglett herd brought the Poké Balls back to their Trainers one by one.
"They're unstoppable..." Brock muttered as his fingers raked through his hair in disbelief.
"Ha! All right, now it's my turn," Ash scoffed. "As long as they're underground, I'm going to use Wartortle." Drawing his Poké Ball from his belt, he threw the ball out to join the others. "I choose you!" As with Gary's Poké Balls, the ball clattered on the ground and opened, but the light that came out barely had time to even gain a shape before it drew back into the Poké Ball and sealed itself shut. "It almost came out..."
"They won't come out," Gary spoke up, and Ash looked up to see that the other Pallet Town Trainer had walked up to him and was watching the scene as well, but had a calculating look on his face. "For some reason, the Pokémon don't want to battle the Diglett."
"Why wouldn't they battle?" Ash asked as he knelt down and picked up his Wartortle's Poké Ball that a Diglett had brought to him.
"I just can't figure it out..." The sound of something large slamming on the ground grabbed their attention, and they both looked to see the foreman had brought out a large mallet and was attempting to hit the Diglett in the head with it. They had surrounded him, and he turned and would hit the mallet, but the group in front of him would just recede underground like it was a game to them.
"You won't get away with this! Go away! Go, go go!" he screamed as he slammed the mallet down like a maniac.
"That won't work," the auburn-haired Trainer observed with a frown. "Diglett can pull their heads in at one hundred eighty-six thousand two hundred eighty-two miles per second."
"What's that?"
"The speed of light," he answered with his hands on his hips. "Diglett aren't very strong, but they can move super fast."
"Wow! You've been studying, huh?" Ash complimented his rival with a smile, but he regretted it instantly when Gary retorted.
"Yeah, I've been studying; unlike you." Ash fell to the ground in embarrassment, and Gary continued. "Well, that's it. I'm gone. Look, since no one's Pokémon will come out and battle, there's no reason for any Trainers to be here unless they want to watch this arcade game." He gestured his thumb out to the foreman who had moved onto running around and slamming his mallet on the ground through the herd, but he had succeeded in hitting none so far. "I, on the other hand, must continue my journey to become a Pokémon Master." The youngest Oak stuck his nose in the air as he made his way to the convertible him and his cheerleaders drove in on, and he jumped into the front seat. "Hasta la vista, Poké-people!" he called with a wave.
"Bye-bye!" the young woman sang.
"C'mon, fans! Get in the car and let's hit the road, shall we?" And with his order, the group all piled into the car beside him before driving off. "Good luck!"
"Ahh, I don't... like him..." Ash moaned with annoyance as he watched his childhood rival swerve around the knocked-over bus and disappear behind it.
"Girls?! Those numbers?!" Brock cried hopelessly with his address book in hand yet again.

Infuriating as Gary might be, he was correct in saying that there was no point in staying around to watch the foreman attempt to beat the Diglett with the mallet. In fact, the only ones who seemed to be enjoying themselves were the Diglett. Everyone else had followed Gary's lead and left in the buses – the only one left behind was the one the Diglett grounded in a hole, and so Ash and Brock followed suit. Ash almost felt weird about not having been able to help the foreman, but since none of the Pokémon would come out of their Poké Balls, there was nothing any of them could do.
But as they finally moved on and they weren't the only Trainers on some type of vehicle, the way over the mountain went on until the sun had dropped. The skeleton of the dam was still visible in the background, but as luck would have it, they happened to find a hot spring off to the side of the path. And so, taking advantage of the opportunity, they decided to set up a camp beside it, and take a dip in the relaxing heated water.
"Ah, there's nothing like a hot bath!" Ash sighed with content as he submerged his whole body in the water up to his chin.
"It's nice that it's free as well," Brock agreed, who was leaning back against a boulder.
But even with the hot water soaking away Ash's aches, they weren't doing the same to his worries, and his mind was stuck on the fact that his Wartortle wouldn't come out of its Poké Ball. It was unlike his loyal starter to do that. If only he could figure it out.
Just then, a noise grabbed his attention, and Ash looked over to see a few Diglett peeking out from the rock collection at them. "Diglett!" they cried when they were spotted, and Ash immediately jumped up.
"Diglett!" he exclaimed.
"A-Ash, shouldn't we put some clothes on first?" Brock questioned, his whole body covered in goose flesh from the complete difference in temperature. But the quick movement from the pair of humans made the Diglett disappear back underground, and looking closely through the moonlight, Ash could see upturned earth moving away from them as the Diglett retreated. Moving fast so not to lose them, Ash threw on his normal clothes over his bathing suit, and though it left his jeans very uncomfortable, he needed to know what was going on, and knew the Diglett were at the center of everything.
Following the Diglett and running past the construction site again, they ignored the foreman who was still attempting to whack the few remaining Diglett who were still playing with him – he was relentless if anything. Soon, they could up with the Diglett and found a larger herd of them moving in a single-file line. Each one of them had a branch on their head, and weren't even paying attention to the two males. Now that their path was obvious, the two Pokémon Trainers exchanged a look of confusion and slowed to a walk as they followed the line of Ground Pokémon.
They followed the Mole Pokemon into the forest, and a louder chanting could be heard with each few steps they took. Finally, Ash's eyebrows rose as they could see in the distance a huge area that had been perfectly landscaped, as if it had been carved to perfection by a human, but it was too far into the woods and away from civilization that this couldn't have been man-made. There was also a change in the normal chant of the Diglett.
"Diglett dig, Diglett dig!"
"Trio trio trio!"
The next Pokémon that was singing along with the Diglett looked like an even larger version of it, but had three heads sticking out of the ground instead of one. Ash and Brock studied in silence as the Diglett they had been following came together, and working together, used their heads to balance a tree branch in a spot that had already been plowed by the larger Pokémon. When one of the unknown Pokémon traveled by, none of their eyes even glancing at the pair, Ash pulled his Pokédex from his pocket and scanned it.
"Dugtrio. The evolved form of Diglett. No specific information available."
"Oh, now I get it!" Brock spoke up as everything clicked in his head. "This must be Diglett and Dugtrio's home!"
"Their home?"
"Yeah. They work and live here together. Dugtrio plows the ground, and Diglett plants the trees." Brock's narrow eyes traveled up in the distance, where there was plowed ground that stretched out for miles. "And not just here – this whole mountain range is their backyard!"
"All of these mountains?" Ash asked. The whole area was surrounded by mountains. It was hard to believe that all of the forests here had been planted by Diglett and Dugtrio.
"Yeah, maybe," the Pokémon Breeder responded. "Probably all of the forests in the entire world are made by them."
"And if we complete the dam..." another new but familiar voice spoke up, and the two looked behind them to see that the construction worker from the dam site had followed them out of curiosity, but the saddened look on his face showed that he had empathy instead of anger. "This whole mountain forest would be completely covered with water. Nothing could live here..."
"All of our Pokémon realized that before we did," Brock added, and then smiled. "I guess we humans still have a lot to learn from the ways of the Pokémon, right Ash?"
"I guess so," Ash agreed, and looked down at the Poké Ball he pulled from his belt with a smile. He could see his distorted face reflecting in the metal surface, and wondered if Wartortle could see and hear him from inside. "Huh, Wartortle?"
"This project's canceled," the foreman stated, his shoulders slump from shame. "I won't build the dam."
Ash smiled at the foreman, knowing that it was a tough decision to make, and then he looked back out at the Diglett and Dugtrio working and singing their work song. "Well, I think I learned my lesson."
Suddenly, the larger of the Ground Pokémon stopped, and turned toward Ash, Brock and the foreman before sinking underground. Eyebrows drew together in confusion, wondering what brought up the sudden change in work. But then, their bodies turned around when they heard movement coming from behind them. The Dugtrio poked their heads out of the ground, but they weren't facing the three humans. Instead, they were some distance away, and facing the beginnings of the dam.
"Trio trio... TRIO!" the Mole Pokémon cried, throwing their heads back. Suddenly, the whole earth beneath their feet began to tremble violently – enough that some of the bird Pokémon sleeping in the trees became startled and flew away in fright. Even the humans behind the horde of Dugtrio had to steady their balance. But what gained most of the damage was the area in front of them. A low grumbling echoed in the distance, and they looked on with their mouths open wide in shock as the dam rocked back and forth from the force of the Earthquake that was sent its way. Against the powerful Ground-type attack, it stood no chance, and all of the foreman's hard work crumbled, though it seemed as though he had already counted his losses when he decided to cancel the project.
"Wow, that's incredible!" Ash droned with amazement, cupping his hand over his eyes to look closely at the debris and dust that was kicked up from the destruction. "Are you all right?"
"Yes... I definitely learned my lesson," the foreman replied to Ash's question, and the boy smiled and pumped his fist.
"So our stay wasn't a waste, after all!"
"That's right!" Brock responded, and looked in the distance just beyond the Diglett and Dugtrio's land. "And we're in luck! Fuchsia Gym's just right over those mountains." Ash followed his friend's eyes, and couldn't help but grin. With excitement bubbling in his chest, he could already feel his victory at the next Gym. It was only just a matter of time now.
