Thanks, everyone for reading my story, and especially thank you to the people who reviewed it, I was surprised at how many people read it in a short amount of time.
To answer a concern a reviewer had, I'm not planning to add any crazy power-up for Kame, as I want any power he gets to be earned.
Without further ado
The Pyre
Dread
That was all I felt as I tried to find a way to survive the war. Copy from other anime, the best I had was a bootleg firebending. Learn kenjutsu, extremely hard to learn as a nongenius from a book. Learn fuinjutsu, was basically gibberish. Pretty much every single thing I tried was full of problems. So the only thing I could do was improve my control of chakra and fire style, and train my body for the upcoming war.
The only good thing to come out of these 2 months of training was me saving enough money from D-rank missions, to purchase the tanto from Sanda-san's shop.
Sitting on the ground after another useless session of the Genin Corp training. I contemplated my inevitable downfall.
"What's got you all depressed?" said someone from behind me said
I looked up to see Riichi smiling down at me. Riichi was some fodder jounin in canon, to me he was a godsend. He was three years older than me and had been in the corps longer which meant he knew a lot, he was pretty much my only friend in the corps and had taught me a bunch.
"I'm internally monologuing about my inevitable death in the coming days when I'm going to be deployed," I replied
"Why are you so grim man, you'll be fine," Riichi said while moving to sit next to me.
"I appreciate your faith in me, but even with the stuff you taught me, I'm most likely going to die to some chūnin," I responded.
"If you have that attitude then, yeah you will," he said. While I understand that he was trying to cheer me up, he didn't have to lie to me, he knew that there was a good chance I was going to die. The same thing applied to him, him surviving to canon could have been butterflied away by my presence.
"You're too easy-going senpai," I said
He got that look in his eye, where he had an idea, and looked around the field for something.
"You know," he drawled whilst turning his head towards me "we could form a squad so we won't get split up on the battlefield."
That was an amazing idea, Riichi was virtually a chūnin already so having him around to help me would increase my chances of surviving immensely.
"I would like that" I replied a bit too hastily, because as soon as I said that he started laughing.
"Let's go and ask the commander," he said while still grinning.
Getting up and following Riichi to the commander's office, we went inside and saw the commander reading a little orange book while giggling.
Riichi said "Good afternoon sir" and we both watch in humor when he jumped and faced us.
"What are you doing in here"! He said while blushing
"We wanted to ask for permission to form a squad before we get deployed," Riichi said while still smiling
"Hmm" he looked at us in suspicion, which made me a bit worried. "Yes, you have my permission; Now scram!" he said as he signed a paper quickly and shooed us out.
As soon as we left, I heard the giggles resume from outside the door. I breathed a sigh of relief as we left. That guy could be a real asshole when he put he wasn't making decisions with his dick.
"Want to get something to eat?" I asked Riichi who seemed relieved as well.
"Sure, where do you want to eat?" He replied
"I know a place that has good ramen," I said
"I'm down"
A short walk later
You know, despite living in naruto for all this time I've never had Ichiraku. I've been so busy trying to find a way to survive, I didn't visit one of the most iconic places in anime. Before the academy I was trying to save money and prepare my body, in academy I was trying to stay above the cutting point and make it on to one of the teams, and after I graduated I was scrambling for at least one thing that would help me survive.
But sitting here with Riichi was a time where I got to relax as I was eating good food with my friend who had just increased my odds of survival. I truly relaxed for the first time in ages.
"Hey, can I get a pork miso!" shouted a voice right next to me. I looked and saw Obito Uchiha. ...There goes my happy mood, Obito wasn't that annoying but knowing that he was one of the two people who started a war, left me uncomfortable around him.
He was with his team, so this was probably going to be the start of an awkward social encounter. I tried to not look at them but Obito noticed me.
"Oh, Hi Kame-kun"
'Dammit'
Looking at them I cursed past me for picking this place to eat. I had to figure out a way to get out of this as soon as possible.
"Hi Guys," I said trying to not extend the conversation further.
"Nice to see you again Kame-kun," Rin said.
"This is Minato sensei and this is Bakakashi who graduated a couple of years ago," Obito said
"Nice to meet you Minato-san and Nice to see you again Kakashi-san," I said giving up on getting out of this. What I could do was divert them from me. "This is Riichi, my friend in the Genin Corps," I said.
Riichi gave me a dirty look as he introduced himself, but I was more focused on the studying look Minato gave me, It felt like I was being seen through. Looking at him and feeling his presence, I could see why he became a Hokage.
"When are you getting deployed?" Minato asked
I could see where this was going so I kept a neutral tone and replied "Next Week". Seeing the pitying look from him, I knew I didn't manage to keep my bitterness out of it. Just like the conversation became awkward. Riichi and I had both finished our ramen, so this was the perfect opportunity to go.
"I'm sorry, but I and Riichi are squad partners so we have to discuss strategies before we get deployed; It was nice to meet you guys," I said before practically running away from the stand.
Minato
'Well that was interesting' he thought as he watched the two boys run away. The older one was about Chúnin level so hopefully, he'll protect the kid. That kid was interesting too, he could probably beat both Obito and Rin but he was sent to the Genin Corps.
He'll be one to watch out for in the future.
"Minato sensei!" I heard as I turn my attention back to my Genin "Kakashi and Obito are fighting again!".
Sighing as I had to go break up another fight between them. 'hope that kid survives'.
Riichi
Looking down at Kame as he tried to plan out strategies and combination jutsu for our deployment. I was confused about why he was put in the Genin Corps. He was better than I was at his age and I met one of the other genin teams and he was better than most of them.
Putting it out of mind, I looked at Kame and wondered how I was going to get him to relax. He was always worried about the war and never gave himself any time to decompress, honestly, the first time I've seen him relax was when we were eating the ramen.
He was an interesting kid, having him with me increased both of our odds of surviving, and he was a good friend and fun to hang around, it was a no-brainer to make a team with him.
"Your Chakra Nature is fire, right," asked Kame.
"Yep" I replied
"I have an Idea"
I smiled, He was a smart kid, but he seriously needs to chill out for once.
Couple Days Later
Kame
Walking around the training field with Riichi, I tried to see if there was anything wrong with my idea and couldn't find any theoretical problems, so it was time to test it.
We were at a training ground that had rivers so we could jump in if we needed to.
Giving the signal to him, he launched some fire bullets. I started giving my chakra to them and shaped them into the form of spears. As I watched them burn through several trees leaving scorched holes in their path, I almost started cheering. The idea was to make lances by ourselves but combining shape transformation and nature transformation at the same time made the technique weaker.
So Riichi and I made it a combination jutsu. It worked too, this was at least B-rank so if I and Riichi practiced it more, it could help us immensely in the war. I could not be happier, we worked on this for days and we were getting deployed the day after tomorrow, so this was just in time.
Things were going well right now, I made a team with Riichi, we made a strong jutsu, and I l found another thing I'm good at... Ninja wires, maybe because I did cats cradle in my past life, I was extremely good at them. Like as soon as I read a book about them I was able to do all the intermediate things and picked up the hard ones with a bit of training. It improved my combat ability so I was feeling a bit better about my chances.
Looking at Riichi who was next to me smiling about our success. I was done for today so I asked him "what do you want to eat"
"Shushu-ya" he replied
I had no idea what that was, but I was fine with anything, so I gave a nod.
Later
"This place is good" I said to Riichi who was eating an enormous amount of food to complete the time challenge to get free food. He just gave a thumbs up in agreement.
Later... er
Looking up at my ceiling, I thought about my deployment in two days.
'Am I ready?'
I've done pretty much all I could do to prepare. My taijutsu was solid and my improvised firebending made it better, my ninjutsu was good, I had a nice array of jutsu to use, my genjutsu was pretty simple, but I had little talent in that art so I ignored that, and my kenjutsu was good enough that I could use the tanto I bought.
I looked over to my desk and picked up and got my notebook in my drawer. This notebook was the whole naruto timeline that I could remember when I was four. It was full of events and notes that I added later; the whole thing was written in English so I had faith that no one who got their hands on it would be able to read it.
I only needed the 3rd war section of the book, but I copied the whole thing anyway because you can never be too prepared. I read the 3rd war section after I was done to see any important events that would affect me.
The Raikages death wouldn't, Minato's fight with A and B wouldn't, I couldn't do anything about Rin or Obito without seeming suspicious. The only thing that might affect me was the people that rose to power during the war, like Sasori, Han, Ao, and the early Akatsuki.
Putting the notebook in a storage seal, I got ready for bed and hopped into my bed.
'I think, I am ready'
AN: Alright that's the end of the second chapter, Hope you guys enjoyed it. Let me know what you think about Kame and Riichi. I added Riichi in the story because I wanted someone around his age he could connect with that wasn't on a canon genin team, Riichi was pretty much perfect for that. Also, I want to clear this up now, because of the plot hole about Kakashi's age; in this, he is the same age as everyone else, he graduated early, ran missions with randoms, became a chūnin by himself(ignoring that thing where he beat Guy in the chūnin exams), then he joined team Minato. I have a stat sheet for Kame since he's going to war next chapter and I want to leave one here to show his growth later.
