Chapter 40

Ash wasn't sure what he hated more: the hot sun beating down on them, or the freezing night of the desert. The pair of traveling Trainers unfortunately had experienced them both, which completely drained them of their energy. The sweat that had poured from their bodies and made their clothes stick to them had now frozen. Sand was grinding uncomfortably in his shoes, his socks, and about a million other places that he didn't even want to say out loud. But they trekked on, dune after dune in the dark.

"So where's that town you were talking about, Brock?" Ash asked as his voice was heavy with exhaustion. It was the only reason they were still moving in the first place.

"Chill out – it's gotta be around here somewhere..." the Pokémon Breeder returned. True to his word, as they climbed to the top of a sand dune that was probably the size of a large hill, the sight in front of them brought a smile to their face.

"Wow, that must be it!" Ash said excitedly. The town was glowing radiantly, acting as a beacon of light in the middle of the desert. Despite it being dark, the brightly-colored lights shooting up into the sky and twisting back and forth made it look like a big movie premiere, and even from the distance, they could see all the different-colored neon lights reflecting off all the buildings.

They entered the town and even though it was night-time, unlike all the other towns they had been to, this town didn't seem to be aware at all. With all the energy and activity going on, and people running from place to place hurriedly, you would think it was rush-hour in the middle of the day. "Look at all the lights!" Ash proclaimed, unable to focus on just one thing.

"I knew it! This is Neon Town!" Brock told him as they walked along the sidewalk beside the busy road of honking cars. Casinos and bars littered the town, and it seemed you couldn't walk down a single block before passing at least two. "People love to come here cause it's open all day and all night. There's action twenty-four hours a day."

A small smile was lingering on Ash's face as they headed down the sidewalk toward their unknown destination while at the same time trying to absorb all of the commotion around them, when suddenly, a man wearing a leather outfit walked by and slammed into his shoulder. Ash was so short that his shoulder drove into the man's stomach, and both ricocheted off each other before Ash spun on his heel to make sure the guy was all right. But as he opened his mouth, the greaser whipped around and yelled angrily at him. "Hey! Watch where you're going, you jerk!" he shouted, tapping his foot impatiently and letting his arm swing in his attempt to be intimidating.

"You watch it! You're the one that bumped into me!" the Pokémon Trainer accused with a pointed finger.

"Oh yeah?!" The two glared and growled at each other, shooting daggers through their eyes, but Brock quickly jumped beside his friend and whispered to him with a cupped hand.

"Hey Ash, just apologize!"

"He should apologize; he's the one who bumped into me!"

"Why you little-" The sound of sirens drowned out the rest of what the man said, and a police motorcycle carrying one Officer Jenny came screeching to a halt beside them, kicking up dirt and litter on the asphalt. Leaping off her bike, she wedged herself in between the two and held out her arms.

"All right, break it up, you too! There's no fighting here!" The presence of the police officer made the man back down instantly, and he sent Ash one more dirty look before turning away.

"Eh, that little runt's not worth it..."

Jenny watched with hardened eyes as he turned the corner, and then turned her attention to them. "You kids shouldn't be walking the streets at night!"

"I'm sorry, Officer, but we just got into town," Ash explained, somewhat thrown off by how cranky the Officer Jenny in this town was.

"Then you go find yourselves a hotel or something," she scolded with her hands on her hips. "People around here are pretty short-tempered!"

"Short-tempered?" It was the understatement of the century.

"They're on edge because they stay out all night and don't get enough sleep. You kids should find a hotel; get a good night's rest, and mind your own business." In the distance, the sound of arguing echoed off the building, cutting through the eternal noise of the city, but Jenny's ears perked up instantly and she gasped as she whipped her head in the direction it was coming from. "There's another one!" she exclaimed, and without even a second glance, she jumped back on her bike and flicked on the sirens before skidding away, leaving both Ash and Brock staring at each other in confusion.

Finding a hotel room was actually not as hard as one might of thought – mostly due to the fact that the people in town never slept and they all visited the arcades and casinos all night. But the city was so bright that even with the blinds down, it was still light as day in their room with the lights off. Not to mention, the room wasn't soundproof, so they could hear the constant commotion coming in from outside. While it was nice to have a shower and lay in a bed for once, but when they left the next morning, they still had heavy bags under their eyes.

They checked out the next morning with their backpacks over their shoulders and their feet all rested up. They were still in the middle of a wasteland area, but they still had to trek through a small forest in order to get to the canyon that was on the other side of it. Leaving through the lobby doors, Ash and Brock frowned as the first sights that greeted them was people still roaming about. It was still so early, but there were still as many people out as there were the night before. The only difference was it seemed like more of them were arguing.

"Look at them..." Ash commented quietly as his eyes darted from each person.

"I wonder when they sleep," Brock pondered, but then their eyes fell on Officer Jenny, who was bouncing from group to group and jumping in between them as she had done with Ash and the greaser from the night before.

"Break it up! Calm down! Move along!" she screamed at the groups. It sounded like she needed a nap as well – she was just as aggressive as the people she was stopping from fighting.

"Let's just keep moving," the Pokémon Trainer suggested. Brock agreed with a nod, and they left the city behind as fast as they could.

The woods behind Neon Town was much, much more tranquil than the city that sat alongside it. Normally, the silence was heavy in the air when him and Brock didn't talk about anything, but they both basked in the sounds of nature around them. "Ugh, it was so loud in Neon Town that I couldn't get any sleep," Ash started, unable to wipe the small smile off his face at the peacefulness of it all.

Brock opened his mouth to respond, but closed it when something jumped up onto a tree stump up ahead on the path. It was round and pink, and it hadn't noticed them yet, but it was hard to imagine that it hadn't since it had big teal eyes. But it wasn't looking at them at all, instead, it was looking off to the side and into the air. "Isn't that a Jigglypuff?" he asked. Hearing the older boy speak drew the Pokémon's attention toward them, and it smiled at them as they approached.

"Jiggly!" it greeted with a big smile.

"I've never seen one up close before!" Ash stated, and took out Dexter to analyze it.

"Jigglypuff, a Balloon Pokémon. It has large, friendly eyes and it sings a pleasant song."

"It sings?" Ash questioned. "Hey, this is kind of like a stage; do you want to sing for us, Jigglypuff?" Though his question was innocent, the smile instantly disappeared from the pink Pokémon's face, and it puffed itself up like a balloon angrily. "I wonder what it's problem is..."

"There's something strange about it..." Brock murmured in Ash's ear, but they didn't have a chance to ask it, as the Balloon Pokémon seemed to be offended already, and it stuck its nose into the air before jumping away and disappearing into the bushes where it had originally come from.

"What did I say?" Ash and Brock exchanged a confused look, and the younger of the pair shrugged it off before they continued onward through the woods.

Their trek through the woods was only a couple days, and it let them out and into the hot wasteland once again. But this time, it wasn't a desert they were walking through, but a beautiful canyon known as Grampa Canyon. According to Brock's guide, it was an ancient wonder, and was often visited by people as a regular tourist spot. The amount of people they were expecting to see, however, did not add up with the amount of people they actually saw.

The pair stood and stared in awe beside a sign that looked to be newly-placed in the ground featuring a shovel and pick-ax crossed, but their attention was drawn to the line of people that were pouring into the canyon from another road across from them. They were all single filed and carrying digging equipment.

"What's going on down there?" Ash asked rhetorically, also noting they all had packs on their backs. "I wonder what everyone's doing with those picks and shovels."

"Don't you know anything?" A voice that wasn't Brock's but was familiar nonetheless spoke up, and Ash's eyebrows rose as he turned his head beside him to look at him. The owner of the voice was normally dressed in a long-sleeve purple shirt, but today, he was dressed in a khaki-colored shirt and brown pants, and over it a dark brown jacket. A brown hat was placed over his wild auburn hair, and he looked out from under the brim with a familiar smirk that made Ash's blood boil as he lifted a pick-ax onto his shoulder. "Ash. Not only late as usual, but clueless, too."

"Hey! It's Gary!" the black-haired boy exclaimed, but then blinked and pointed at his rival. "Why are you dressed like that?"

"Don't tell me you never heard of the Pokemon Discovery?" he scoffed. "Even a nerd like you should have heard about the great fossil rush."

"The great fossil rush?" It seemed both Ash and Brock had no idea about it, but soon, Gary's cheerleaders broke from the line of people and began to cheer loudly for everyone to hear.

"Gary, Gary, he's our man! If he can't find them, no one can!"

"Thank you, thank you to all my loyal fans!" he waved to them with a bright smile on his face, and when he lowered his hand, he was mostly talking to himself than Ash. "I gotta go. I gotta find all the fossils quick before anyone else does." Gary then sneered at Ash with a cocked eyebrow. "Can't waste my precious time hanging around with a loser like you."

"Loser?!" Ash spat, and knowing what was going to happen, Brock wrapped his arms around the younger boy as he lunged forward to keep him from attacking Gary. "That… know-it-all!" Once he was out of lunging territory, Ash broke free of his friend's full-nelson and let out a frustrated yell before whipping around and looking at Brock with a fire in his eye that the Pokemon Breeder only tended to see when Ash's childhood rival was around. "I'm gonna find a Pokemon fossil before Gary even starts digging! That'll show him who the real loser is!"

"I don't feel right about digging up old Pokemon fossils," Brock stated with his arms crossed and his brow furrowed. "Especially after they've been resting in the earth for such a long time…" But the concerns fell upon deaf ears, as Ash didn't hear it at the sound of his own fuming, and he quickly stomped into the swarm of people marching into the canyon with Brock hurrying along after him so as to not lose him in the crowd.

The crowd eventually dispersed in the heart of the canyon, and Ash and Brock climbed up on the tallest point of it to try and find a good spot to begin. Their eyes eventually fell upon the people that spotted the huge canyon, and Ash couldn't help but comment on it. "Wow, look at all the people digging!"

"All these people digging, but nobody's found any fossils yet… I wonder if this great fossil rush is really for real…" Brock muttered with a finger curled around his chin.

"Sure it is," Ash responded.

"I guess there's only one way to find out," a new voice spoke up, and both Trainers looked to see a new person standing beside Brock, also looking down and scoping the area. Like everyone else, he was wearing a large backpack on his back with several tools hanging from it, and his t-shirt had been white at some point, but was now covered in so much dirt that it probably wouldn't ever go back to its original color. He smiled at them as they looked him up and down, and continued. "You two are packing awful light to dig for fossils."

"We're only here by coincidence," Brock told him.

"Yeah, we just happened to be passing through," Ash added.

"Well, you definitely passed through at the right time. There was an actual Pokemon fossil found here recently, which is what prompted all these people to come here; myself included. My name's Pierre."

"I'm Ash. I'm trying to become a Pokemon Master."

"And I'm Brock."

"Oh, I know who you are," Pierre said with a smile at the Pokemon Breeder. "You used to be the Gym Leader of the Pewter Gym. You were a bit of an inspiration to me when I began my journey."

Brock seemed thrown off by the idea that someone was inspired by him, but Ash butt in with an excited question of his own. "Does that mean that you're a Trainer, too?"

"Yes, for now." When Ash and Brock gave him a quizzical look, he continued. "My main goal is to become a Pokemon Archaeologist."

"A Pokemon Archaeologist?" Ash parroted.

"Yeah. There are so many Pokemon that fell out of existence long ago, some that we don't even know about yet. I'd love to be able to uncover them and discover a new Pokemon that walked the earth long ago."

"That's probably why you're here now; it's good practice for your dream," Brock realized.

"Precisely," Pierre agreed. "I came up here to scout which place would be a good place to start. Grampa Canyon is so big we could search for days and still not find anything. But a bird's eye view would really help." He studied the ground with his thin black eyes before nodding and turning back. "I think I found a good spot."

"Hey, we could help you look, if you'd like!" Ash offered.

"If you would have us, that is," Brock added, and Pierre nodded in agreement.

"Sure, but you guys could probably do with some digging tools." There was a noise that sounded similar to a sword drawing from its sheath coming from Pierre's bag, and he handed the pair a shovel and a pick-ax respectively. Ash and Brock took them, with Ash taking the pick, and the black-haired boy looked down at the tool in his hand.

"Um, thanks, but what are you going to use?"

"Don't worry, I have my own digging method," he said with a wink, and pulled out a Poké Ball. The ball opened at its center, and from the flash of light that spilled out of it came a brown Pokemon with a brick-patterned back.

"It's a Sandshrew!" Ash recognized.

"Shrew, Sand!"

"Are you ready to start digging, buddy?" Pierre asked his Pokemon, and the Mouse Pokemon nodded happily. Since Pierre seemed to know what he was doing, Ash and Brock followed him and his Sandshrew down the canyon's side.

o 0 o

The hot sun continually beat down on them, but everyone still continued working tirelessly throughout the day. Fossil digging was exhausting work, and within the hour, Ash's arms were already sore from working muscles that hadn't really been worked. The three mostly kept to themselves, but didn't stray too far from the sporadic person trying to find a new place to dig. But so far, no one had found nothing. The biggest discovery that was going around was that someone had uncovered fossilized Pokémon manure. Since hearing that, Pierre seemed to be more determined than ever.

Speaking of Pierre, it was clear that the Pokémon Trainer had trained his Sandshrew well. Using its Dig attack where he pointed, it dug fast while also being careful when it discovered any rocks buried in the dirt. The Ground-type also seemed to be able to sense where good sized rocks that could be fossils were, and it wasn't just Pierre telling his Pokémon where to dig – they seemed to listen to each other and help each other. It made Ash want to see the rest of Pierre's team, and see if they could do the same in battle.

His dark eyes couldn't help but wander through the area, and his eyes fell upon Gary. His childhood rival was sweating under his hat, but was using his pick-ax to dig into the ground. He would dig just a foot in, and then move on somewhere else. Meanwhile, his cheerleaders were given him encouragement, but other than Gary, Brock was the only one that didn't seem bothered by them.

A few more hours had passed, and Ash was starting to get impatient. It was like fishing all over again, and there was a reason he didn't like doing it. He did it as a kid because it was one of the only things to do in a dinky town like Pallet Town, but this seemed to be holding him up from his adventure and finding another Gym. While his mind wandered, his eyes once again trailed over to Gary while taking a small break. His folded hands were sore and he knew there would be blisters under his gloves when he took them off that night, and he leaned against the pick-ax while thinking about if he should sip from his water. Gary had just finished digging a hole and walked away to find another spot to go dig, and that was when Pierre's Sandshrew – walking on all fours – went up to the hole and sniffed the ground.

"Sand, Sandshrew!" it called to its Trainer, and pointed down into the started hole. Pierre nodded, and that was all the confirmation it needed. Its stubby claws dug into the ground and moved around the soil and rocks before it stopped like before. But this time, it sniffed the dirt again, and its ears twitched before it lifted its head back up. "Shrew! Sandshrew sand!" This grabbed Gary's attention, and he watched curiously as Pierre knelt down at the hole that his Pokémon had dug. Taking out a trowel, he helped his Pokémon dig into the ground as he had many times before. This time, the result was different.

"Hey... I think we found something!" Pierre called, excitement raising in his voice. This call was meant for Ash and Brock, but it also grabbed the attention of those digging nearby. As Ash and Brock hurried up to the Pokémon Archaeologist, he was pulling out a rock with a round top. It was still embedded in some rock and crust, but it looked a little different than the average rock.

An older, official-looking gentleman came hurrying up to Pierre, and the two took out each a brush to wipe some of the easy sand off it before the man peered through a magnifying glass and hummed quietly to himself. A silence fell over the area as they waited for the results; everyone had stopped digging to see the outcome as well. Finally, the old man smiled under his mustache. "Congratulations, sonny. You've found yourself a genuine Pokémon fossil!" Gasps echoed through the canyon from the onlookers, and Pierre found himself grinning widely as he looked down at the rock in his hand. Some people rushed toward him to get a closer look at it, but he ignored them and smiled down at Sandshrew.

"We did it, pal! The first of many!"

"Wait just a minute!" Gary yelled, and everyone parted as the young boy went stomping up to Pierre and the inspector. "That hole was started by me! That should have been mine!"

"You walked away from it too soon, it seems," Pierre said dismissively, barely giving Gary a glance as he marveled down at the fossil in his hands as if it would disappear if he blinked.

"Maybe I just walked away from it for a second to take a break!" the Pallet Town boy argued back. "Either way, I think that fossil rightfully belongs to Gary Oak! I am going to be a Pokémon Master; it would make sense to add that to my collection as well."

"Gary, Gary, digs them all! Gary digs while others bawl!" his cheerleaders sang in the background.

"Leave him alone, Gary!" Ash shouted. "Finders keepers!"

"You walked away from it; we all saw it!" Brock added.

"Quiet down, peanut gallery. I don't need opinions from a loser like Ash," Gary shot back, and then looked at Pierre and pulled out a Poké Ball. "How about a battle, then; winner gets the fossil!" Sandshrew looked curiously up at its Trainer to see his reaction, and Pierre's face had hardened with a frown.

"You're an only child, aren't you?" Pierre finally answered with a question of his own. "Overshadowed by another but at the same time, still used to getting what you want, when you want it." Ash blinked, and Pierre eventually nodded. "Fine, I'll accept your challenge." Gary's smirk widened, and everyone made room to give enough space for the pair to battle.

"That's not fair! I want to battle the winner!" Ash called from the sidelines, but Brock shushed him.

"Not now, Ash," the Pokémon Breeder whispered, then spoke louder to Pierre. "Are you sure you want to do this? Gary Oak is a prodigy from Pallet Town, and if you lose, you lose your first fossil as well. Don't forget about your dream."

"Thank you for your kind words, but I believe in my Pokémon," Pierre replied with a slight smile.

"So, I see you have a Sandshrew," Gary observed with a knowing smirk. "Sandshrew is a Ground-type Pokémon with a powerful physical defense."

"He's such a show-off..." Ash grumbled, but only Brock heard this as Gary continued.

"But it would be wrong of me to base your team off just one Pokémon, so I'm going to choose a Pokémon that will be able to counter anything you throw at me," he went on, and his cheerleaders began to sing.

"Go go Gary, attack attack! Don't stop 'til you get that fossil back!"

He brought his lips to his Poké Ball and kissed its red surface before drawing his arm back. "I'll get it back for sure with this Pokémon! Goo!" He threw the Poké Ball out, and a puppy-like Pokémon with red fur appeared with a growl.

"Growww!" the Growlithe cried, and lowering its body into a battle ready position. Ash looked at Growlithe – and then over at Gary, who was smirking confidently – before his eyes darted over to Pierre to see his choice in Pokémon. Would he go with Sandshrew, or decide on another?

Pierre didn't look too worried, and only studied his opponent's Pokémon for a moment before drawing his own Poké Ball. Pressing the center button, he threw the Poké Ball out in front of him. "Lickitung, let's go!" On Pierre's side of the battlefield, a pink Pokémon with tan lines on its stomach appeared from the light inside the capture device, and it let out a cry. When it did, a long tongue unraveled from inside its mouth that hung down to its stomach.

"What's that Pokémon?" Ash asked, and took out his Pokédex.

"Lickitung, the Licking Pokémon. It uses a tongue that is more than twice the length of its body to battle, as well as to gather food."

"Lickitung is a Normal-type Pokémon. Growlithe should be able to handle it," Gary smirked. "Okay, Growlithe! Use Take Down attack!"

"Groowwl!" Gary's Pokémon snarled and bounded forward. Its feet patted against the soil as it ran and closed the distance between it and its opponent, but Pierre seemed unconcerned and countered.

"Lickitung, stop it!" he instructed. Lickitung gave a muttered response and its tongue shot out like a whip before the front of it planted itself in the dirt directly in front of Growlithe. The Puppy Pokémon tried to stop, but skidded in the dirt and slammed into the slimy appendage. When it did, Lickitung dragged its tongue upward, and its slobber matted down Growlithe's fur as it stood shaking uncomfortably.

Gary seemed thrown off by the block method, and blinked in confusion, but shook it off and replaced it with a smirk. "A lucky break. Then, we'll attack from a distance. Growlithe, Flamethrower!" Like an animal would when it was covered with water, Growlithe shook its body before jumping back.

"Lickitung, use your Ice Beam!" Pierre countered. Both Pokémon opened their mouth, and a different elemental attack was shot from their throats. While Growlithe launched a flame attack based on its type, Lickitung fired a stream of freezing water. The two attacks collided and immediately a loud hiss sounded as they canceled each other out. Both the fire and the liquid ice were reacting to each other and putting the other out, to which Brock gave a hum of thought.

"Ice Beam is an Ice-type move, to which a Fire-type move like Flamethrower is strong against," he commented. "The way Ice Beam is able to cancel out Flamethrower shows just how well that Lickitung has been raised as well."

"Who's gonna win, do you think?" Ash asked, but Brock shook his head.

"It's too early to tell right now, Ash. Both are powerful Pokémon Trainers." Ash didn't reply, but looked out at Gary with his lips peeled away from his teeth, and the determination on his rival's face brought out a tint of green jealousy in his chest.

"Looks like we're gonna have to try something else..." Gary muttered. Though it pleased Ash that the confident smirk had been wiped off Gary's face, he had an odd feeling in his chest. This was the first time he had seen Gary battle since they began their journey. It was clear he had some skills. "Growlithe, use Bite to stop its tongue!" Growlithe barked, and bounded forward once again with its sharp teeth bared this time.

Like the other times, Pierre didn't hesitate when he called out his next counter. "Lickitung, grab it!" he ordered.

"Tung!" his Pokémon cried, and closed its mouth briefly before leaning forward. Its tongue shot out like a rocket at Growlithe, and the Fire Pokémon jumped into the air with its mouth open to close its jaws around the appendage, but Lickitung seemed to predict this and its tongue swooped up underneath Growlithe and wrapped around its midsection. Not only was it free of Growlithe's tongue, but now Gary's Pokémon was defenseless. Gary saw this as well and gasped, and his cheerleaders let out a whine.

"Now Lickitung, Slam attack!" Whipping its head upward, Lickitung pulled its tongue higher into the air and then brought it down to the ground like a gavel. The ground crumbled as the impact was made, and Growlithe could be heard crying out in pain through the debris that kicked up. Moments later, Lickitung drew its tongue back and rolled it back up inside its mouth, and all eyes were on the cracked ground.

Through the dust that hung in the air from the recently-upturned earth, the shadow of Growlithe slowly stood up, wincing in pain as it did so. It was hurt, but it could still go on fighting.

Just then, a whistle sounded throughout the canyon, and everyone's attention was peeled away from the battle toward the Officer Jenny and Nurse Joy running toward them. "Okay, break it up! Break it up!" she called in a commanding voice after giving her whistle one final blow.

"Pokemon should not be used to settle arguments!" Nurse Joy said when they approached.

"But Nurse Joy, Gary was the one that started it-" Ash tried to reason, but Officer Jenny cut him off.

"And I'm ending it. I heard that a fossil was found here. Who dug up the fossil?"

"I did. With my Sandshrew," Pierre explained with a straight face.

"Is this true?" the blue-haired officer asked for confirmation from the inspector, and the older gentleman nodded. "Then you keep the fossil. Now, I'm going to ask once that all Pokémon are to return to their Poké Balls immediately." Both Trainers replied, and while Gary's cheerleaders cried out in anguish, the Pallet Town boy looked positively annoyed as he brought his Pokémon back into its Poké Ball. Across from him, Pierre took out two Poké Balls and returned both his Lickitung and Sandshrew back inside. But there was a small smile on his face despite being reprimanded – he had a fossil.

Everyone was now searching frantically for fossils more than ever now that one was discovered. Meanwhile, Pierre had decided that he would search for a couple more days before continuing his own adventure, and figured that most people would be doing the same. Gary had slunk out of sight once Officer Jenny had left the scene, and they didn't hear from him or his cheerleaders since. But Brock was still uncomfortable with the fact that everyone was trying to uncover sleeping fossils, so he wanted to move on. Since Ash was also looking for a reason to leave and continue their journey, he agreed. So, Pierre walked with them to the edge of Grampa Canyon to show them how to get across.

"I wonder who would have won between you and Gary..." Ash murmured thoughtfully with a finger on his chin. "I would have loved to have seen that smirk wiped off of Gary's face, though."

"It could have gone either way," Pierre said, stopping in place. "All that matters to me is that I have my first fossil, and I couldn't be more happier."

"Good luck in your searching," Brock replied. "Just try not to uncover too many." Pierre chuckled, and waved.

"Thank you. Maybe we'll meet again someday."

"I'm sure of it," Ash nodded, and the pair waved at the Pokémon Trainer before walking towards the setting sun.
