Sacrifice

Colonel Hogan knew he was badly wounded. He weakly opened his eyes and looked into Carter's tear-stained face. He brought a shaky hand to his Sergeant's cheek, wiping away the salty droplets.

"Shhh. Don't cry, Carter," Hogan whispered.

Carter took the Colonel's hand.

"I'm so sorry, Colonel," he sobbed.

"There's nothing to be sorry for, Carter. I just wish I had been a better Colonel for you boys," Hogan replied.

"But you are! You're the best commanding officer any soldier could have wished for!" Carter exclaimed.

Robert E. Hogan smiled at his youngest team member before his eyes closed forever.
