Chapter 7~ Bloody Parrot!
Weeks passed...I believe it was about two...and everything had gone along fairly smoothly. I had spent my days helping Anamaria with sailing or helping Will with his duties (which was pretty much steering and cleaning). He had been pestering me to tell Jack the truth, but I only put it off and avoided Jack as much as humanly possible. I didn't want anything to slip out...although Will was always hinting at it...
It was a dark night and we were sailing through another fearsome rainstorm. I was standing next to the mast, pulling ropes down to keep the Pearl afloat. I could barely see through the pouring rain, but I had to help out. I was no damsel in distress. The Pearl was rocking violently in the storm and the deck was becoming more treacherous by the minute. This reminded me so much of the night when I fell overboard with Jack.
My eyes scanned the deck and I saw Mr. Gibbs up at the helm talking to Jack. I was almost positive it was Gibbs...but it was difficult to tell through the rain. As I pulled down another rope, I felt the ship jolt Starboard and I lost my footing. I slipped and felt myself slide down the wooden deck, only to be grabbed by a pair of strong arms. "Careful, Morgan!" Will shouted as he helped me up and held me close to him, "We need you to stay with us."
As soon as Will had arrived, he was gone. I saw him running up the stairs to the helm while the rest of the crew was wrestling with the Pearl. I ran to the mast of the ship and held on tight as another strong wave overtook the ship and knocked everyone down. "MAN OVERBOARD!"
"WHAT?" I shouted as I ran to the Port side and stood next to Anamaria. I could see someone floating in the middle of the crashing waves. "WHO IS THAT?" I yelled. I suddenly heard a parrot squawking. It was Mr. Cotton! "We can't leave him behind!" Anamaria shouted. I quickly glanced around and then grabbed a rope that attached to the mast. I made sure the rope was secure before tying the other end to my waist and running to the edge of the ship. "Don't let the rope come lose!" I shouted as I dove over the edge and into the black sea.
I heard someone shout to Jack as I hit the water. It was so cold...colder than I had ever felt Caribbean water be. I opened my eyes under the water and looked up at the crashing sea above me. It looked terrifying, but I had to do this.
When I reached the surface, I looked up and saw a wave about to fall on me. I ducked under the dark water again until it had passed. I took in a deep breath when I surfaced again and looked around. "COTTON!" I shouted. Wait, he couldn't answer me! God damn it! I began swimming away from the Pearl and then noticed someone fighting their way through the waves. "MR. COTTON, I'm here!" I shouted as I swam toward him. The waves were pulling the both of us farther away from each other, but I managed to get through them somehow.
I quickly grabbed onto Mr. Cotton and untied the rope from my waist before tying it around him. "NOW!" I shouted as I gripped onto Mr. Cotton, my voice echoing through the air. The crew knew what to do. I had a strong faith in them. I suddenly felt someone pulling from the opposite end of the rope. "We're going to be saved, Mr. Cotton. Everything will be alright," I said reassuringly as I saw the Black Pearl emerge from the darkness.
Soon enough, I felt my feet dangling in the air. Mr. Cotton and I were almost aboard the Black Pearl again. I had saved someone...luckily it wasn't Jack. He would probably try to grope me on the way back up. "EVERYTHING OKAY?" Will shouted from the deck as we neared it.
"YES...JUST GET US ON BOARD!" I shouted back as I held on tighter to Mr. Cotton. I was going to complete something well enough for Jack to give me some credit. Wait, why do I need his approval? I'm proud of what I've accomplished. I grabbed onto the railing and found a foothold as Mr. Cotton was pulled over the deck. I was so relieved to see him safe, that I didn't notice a huge wave about to crash into the ship...
My body was flying though the air and the rain was pushing me down. Suddenly, I felt something wooden hit my head and cold water surrounding me. "JACK, NO!" I heard someone shout before everything went dark.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
My head ached. Was I alive...dead...? I didn't even know where I was. All I knew was that I was dry. Someone's fingers began to run over my forehead in a feather-like touch and I groaned at the pain. What had happened to me? As I slowly opened my eyes, I met a pair of chocolate brown ones. A bright light filled the room and closed my eyes again, taking in a deep breath. "She's awake!" I heard someone yell.
"Huh?" I mumbled as I tried to open my eyes again, hearing footsteps leave and enter the room.
"Shh," a husky voice whispered, "Stay quiet, love. Ye hit your head damn hard on that driftwood."
"What?" I asked as I fully opened my eyes. There were those same dark eyes staring back into mine. I tried to smile, but could only manage a smirk. "Jack?" I asked softly.
"Yes, Morgan...it's me. Are ye okay?" I nodded and sat up slowly, shaking my head slightly so the room would come back into focus. It wasn't my room! "Where am I?" I asked.
"You're in me quarters, love. I needed to make sure ye were alright. Ye did a brave thing last night, love. I don't think many would've gone after Cotton like ye did."
"I just did my job. I don't like seeing anyone in trouble." Jack placed his hand on my right shoulder and slowly moved the sleeve down. "What are you doing?"
"Love, I have a small question."
"Anything," I said absentmindedly, not realizing what I was saying. Why was I behaving this way? That was another confusing question. "Where did you get that?" he asked as he ran his calloused hands over my shoulder. I glanced at my shoulder and realized that he was touching my scar. The EXACT scar I had received at Isla de Muerta. "I...um...I got that...about five years ago. I was fighting an enemy and got stabbed." Well...it was technically the truth, wasn't it? "Rather interesting, love."
"Why?" I asked. My heart was beginning to pound furiously. Did he know? How was that possible? There was no way he could have known! Will wouldn't dare tell him! "Well, I was in love with a woman who had a mark just like that after a battle. I remember every detail of that scar she bore. It had been my fault that she suffered such pain like that." I gently removed Jack's hand and stood up carefully, gripping the bedpost firmly. I took a deep breath and was about to take another step, but I realized that I was wearing one of Jack's tunics and his breeches! "Why am I in your pants?" I asked, fury beginning to build within me.
"Well...I...uh..."
"YOU CHANGED ME?"
"No," he said calmly, raising his hands in defeat, "Anamaria did. I didn't want ye to kill me." An evil smile crossed my face and I think it scared him. "Guess what...," I said as I took a step toward him."
"What?"
"I'm gonna kill you anyway!" I shouted as I lunged for Jack and grabbed his throat. To my surprise, when I pushed him against the wall forcefully and squeezed his neck, he smiled one of those famous smiles that made any woman go weak at the knees. I focused on my anger and put more pressure on his neck. He showed no reaction. "You...bastard!" I said as I pushed him against the wall and released my hold on him.
Jack simply touched his neck and smirked. "You've got a pretty strong grip," he stated calmly. I eyed him curiously and walked over to his desk. I could feel his eyes on me as I looked over the maps I had seen weeks ago. My right index finger ran across the map of Jamaica and over the heart Jack had drawn. Just then I remembered getting my brand and tattoo. Why had I done that? I gulped and discretely lifted up my right sleeve so I could look at them. I felt tears prick my eyes and quickly left Jack's cabin.
As I ran out onto the deck, I felt the bright sunlight caress my face. I was running all over again. That was the one thing I had always been good at. When I reached the bow of the ship, I closed my eyes and let the calm wind blow gently against my face. What was I going to do? I couldn't hide this from Jack much longer. He had to know by now. There were so many signs that I couldn't help.
I slowly opened my eyes and looked at my tattoo in the bright light. It was beautiful, but I had done all of this to get revenge. I had vanished from the eyes of a sparrow, gone to Isla de Muerta, awakened Barbossa so he could teach me pirate laws, killed him again, got branded and tattooed, and made a name for myself. What had I been trying to prove all these years? "Was I trying to impress him?"
SQUAWK!
I turned around and saw Mr. Cotton standing behind me with his faithful parrot on his shoulder. I smiled gently. "Are you feeling well, Mr. Cotton?"
"SQUAWK, wind in yer sails...wind in yer sails," the parrot said.
"I guess that means yes," I replied with a smile as I reached up and patted the parrot's head gently, "I wish I could tell him." The bird gave me a questioning look. "Well," I whispered, "I guess I can tell you. It's not like you can tell anyone." Mr. Cotton even raised an eyebrow. "Now...don't tell anyone...especially Jack...but I'm Natalie O'Connell," I whispered, "You remember me, don't you?"
"SQUAWK, PRETTY GIRL, SQUAWK!" Shit! The parrot always called me that when I was here before! I guess he could tell someone. "Shh!" I hushed.
"SQUAWK, PRETTY GIRL, SQUAWK!"
"Quiet!" I yelled in a soft voice. I didn't want anyone to hear it. "What is it, Cotton?" Gibbs asked as he walked up to us. I felt my stomach do a flip. This was not going to be good. "SQUAWK, PRETTY GIRL, SQUAWK!" the parrot said again.
"That's funny," Mr. Gibbs said, "Ye only used to call..." his gaze drifted to me, "Natalie that..." I gulped. I was in big trouble now. "Natalie...Natalie O'Connell?" Joshamee asked.
"Bloody parrot," I mumbled as I looked at Gibbs and tried to smile.
"Oh my God...it's YOU!" he shouted. I looked around and noticed that the entire crew was staring at me now...except for Jack. Thank God he was still in his cabin. "Mates, we have an old friend here!" Gibbs exclaimed, "It's O'Connell!" I felt sick. What was I going to do now? This couldn't be happening to me. Not here...not now. I didn't want this. Anamaria came running to me and embraced me in a strong hug. "I thought it was you. You were so much like her!" she said joyfully.
"Heh...yeah..." My voice trailed off as I untangled myself from her arms and made my way through the crowd. "What's going on out 'ere?" I stopped dead. Jack was standing right in front of me! "Ye should be sailing...not staring. Morgan's fine now!"
"That, Captain...is no Morgan!" Gibbs said. I whipped my head around to look at the pirate and glared. What was he trying to do...ruin my life? "If she's not Morgan Kelly...than who is she?" Jack asked.
"She is Morgan Kelly," Will said as he stepped up next to me and turned me around to face Jack again, "But Morgan Kelly is someone else."
"What are ye getting at Will?" Jack asked, raising an eyebrow before turning to me, "Morgan, ye want to explain this to me?" I stood there silently, knowing that my cover was blown. I was dead either way. "Morgan?" he asked again.
"I think you should start calling her by her REAL name, Jack..."
"Will," I begged, "Please don't-"
"I gave you quite a bit of time to tell him the truth...yet you refused. He deserves to know who you really are."
"Will-" I began.
"Hey, she doesn't want to tell me, she don't have to," Jack interrupted, "Her business is her business." I began to relax a little at that comment. I guess Sparrow wasn't as bad as I thought. "Oh, but you'll want to know about this, Jack," Will continued, "You will."
"Please don't-"
"Jack," Will said as he pushed me into the captain's arms, "Meet your love!" I immediately jumped away from Jack and glared at Will. "What are ye getting at, Will?" Jack asked, "The only 'love' I ever had was...Natalie O'Connell..." Jack turned and looked at me, his eyes confused and angry. I felt tears forming in my eyes and I looked down. "No," Jack drawled, "Ye can't be her. She disappeared-"
"Six years ago...I know," I interrupted, keeping my eyes on the deck, "I know." I then felt a rough hand slide under my chin and lift my head up. I was met with Jack's chocolate brown eyes. "Natalie?" he asked. Tears came to my eyes. "I'm sorry, Jack," I whispered, "I should have-"
"Don't...don't," he said softly as he took a few steps away from me.
"Jack, I-"
"Don't," he said again in a gentle voice as he turned and walked into his cabin, slamming the door behind him as loud as he could. I jumped at the sound and then turned and looked at the crew. They were all staring at me with wide eyes. When I covered my eyes and walked over to the mast, I could feel their eyes boring into my back. I quickly climbed up to the crow's nest and sat down. "What have I done?"
