His Mother's Eyes
Disclaimer: I don't own Star Wars
Obiwan watched Luke walk away and climb into his X-wing, and felt some strange feeling begin to blossom within his chest. Transparent and ghostly though he was, it did not prevent him from feeling emotion, as Obiwan had now identified the feeling as just that. It was hope; something he had not felt in years and it surprised him that it had taken so long to recognize it. And oh, how good it felt, starting at his chest and enveloping him, much like the water in a warm bath. Because for the first time in many years, twenty-one to be exact, Obiwan heard the words and believed.
"There is still good in him."
Luke had said that with a fiercely determined look in his eyes. Obiwan had been initially surprised that the boy believed it down to his very core. He had persisted, even now Luke was going off to save the man who once was – no, perhaps is – Anakin Skywalker.
And even then, Obiwan had thought it a lost cause, and in that moment it had seemed as if that would be the end. Luke would fail, trying to find something in a man that did not exist. His fate would be worse then death. Only if he was strong enough to be persistent would he die, and that didn't leave the galaxy in a better position than before.
But then, he had remembered another voice from a woman on her deathbed.
"There is still good in him, I know it."
He hadn't believed her then either, but then both voices had overlapped, and blue eyes became brown as the face of Luke gave way to his mother's. He had been flooded with so much hope and persistence, every fiber of Luke and Padme's beings had believed it; it was like being caught in a maelstrom. And in that moment, Obiwan had believed.
Obiwan couldn't help but remember with fondness the day he had rescued a young Luke from tuskens. He had looked so much like Anakin back then. So much that it had almost hurt… Only the knowledge that Luke wasn't Anakin kept Obiwan able to smile and come to love the boy as his own. But now…
"There is still good in him," said Luke, glaring at Obiwan as if challenging him to say any different. "I know there is."
Obiwan chuckled and shook his head at their recent meeting. And slowly his spirit began to fade away, leaving nothing but a swamp and some words, echoing in the air.
"He has his mother's eyes."
