Prompt: Green, Sleeping

Green eyes…

They were closed for the moment. Sherry had woken early, but Gin was still sleeping, and she didn't want to disturb him, so she was observing him instead. Even when his eyes weren't closed, they were usually hidden by either his hat or bangs, but she remembered the first time she saw his eyes clearly, a beautiful, terrible pair to behold. Green eyes were very uncommon, but especially here in Japan, and not for the first time she wondered about his family heritage that she knew he would never disclose.

While Sherry lay beside Gin watching him sleep, she contemplated over the importance of green eyes across time in various cultures. In Ancient Egypt, green was the color associated with new life, growth, and rebirth. In English-speaking countries, green was associated with jealousy with the expression 'a green-eyed monster', and during the witch hunt era, green eyes were associated with evil and witches and supposed to be able to steal souls if you looked into them. Even here in Japan, a lot of water demons and spirits like kappa who drowned unwary travelers were said to have green eyes.

Sherry adjusted her arms to a more comfortable position and Gin grunted, eyes opening slowly while she silently cursed herself for disturbing him. He stared at her blankly for a bit then said groggily, "Somefin on m'face?"

He was so tired, and Sherry smiled fondly at him as she reached out and brushed some of his long hair behind his ear. "No, I'm just drowning in your wicked soul-stealing green eyes," she said.

Gin snorted then threw his arm around her waist and pulled her against his chest. "S'too early fer riddles. Go back t'sleep."

Sherry giggled but did indeed take his advice and snuggle into his warm embrace, already looking forward to waking up again a little later in the morning still lying next to him.
