Joseph Winchester Pov
*Flashback*
Year 1887
In 1873, my parents died hunting, leaving my brother who was only ten years old to take care of us.
I was only five at the time and since that day, we never left each other's side.
Even when it comes to personal outings such as courting girls and taking them out for the evening.
Today is my eighteen birthday, I never had an actual girlfriend and my brother Samson Joel Winchester forces me to tag along to meet his new lady friend's family.
I did not care to search for a wife, yet clearly everyone in this town cares to be married with children before they reach the age of twenty-five.
My brother had three more years to reach that age yet he's been on a different hunt than I lately.
We haven't actually gone on a hunt since he met her.
Phebe -This was her hometown. We have only been here four times before, yet I knew we didn't belong here.
My brother Samson would disagree with me, but I cannot pinpoint my gut feeling of this place not being home-material.
This place had no excitement or wow-factor, it was utterly boring.
I need to be out in the woods -saving people, hunting strange things. Not sitting in a school-house singing 'Morningtown Ride' or whatever they sing here.
Just as the town councilman, Ken Watanabe Freeman and his wife Delaney Freeman stood in front of us, I lifted my chin to see over the many heads ahead of me. This was a meeting on the new curfew law starting tomorrow morning. It was boring and I rather go home.
"Can we have your attention please, sadly we have to cut this meeting short. The sheriff and his men, out those doors, forewarn of a wild animal on the loose. You all should return home at once." Ken Freeman announced. He had to have been twice Samson's age and only been in this country for all his life, of Japanese descent that came from his mother, his wife has mentioned her ancestors are from Hati.
"We ask you all to be safe and protect your family as best as you can. Be safe walking to your carriages and cottages, yet do so quickly." Delaney Freeman says fast.
"Yes, and goodnight." Ken Freeman added.
We all suddenly heard the school doors burst open and some of the folks gasped and jumped in surprise.
"My apologies for the intrusion." Everyone, including me, heard an unfamiliar woman's voice and looked towards the door. "I hear that there's a monster running around your congregation." A tall woman walked into the school-house covered head to toe in dark green guard.
"Who is that?" Phebe whispers to Samson.
"More of.. What is she wearing?" I say never seeing that attire in my life.
"If I remember correctly ..they call it a Hijab dress-gown."
"Don't be alarmed. Your town has a dark creature that has been awakened to harvest. You cannot leave this moment or someone will die." She spoke.
"Sam, What's going on?" Phebe asked my brother.
"Ma'am, it's in these people's right to get to their home safely and quickly as possible." Councilman, Ken Freeman says. "The mayor has already allowed this meeting against his better judgment. You all must -"
"They are not going anywhere." A familiar male voice says walking into the school with a shotgun.
"Enderson? Enderson Singer? What on earth are you doing? And with a gun?" Samson questioned.
Enderson was a close friend of ours, yet Samson rather him not out himself to the town that he's a hunter.
"Trust in me. I do not know who this is…" Enderson glanced at the unknown lady. "However, she tells no lies. To leave now will put you all in great danger." Enderson says to us all.
Suddenly we all heard wailing from the outdoors.
The people in the room started to panic in whispers.
Through the window the sun has set. It was surely my moment to rush to the carriage for one of my many weapons.
"Samson, let's go." I say to my brother, getting ready to rush from my seat.
"Joseph?" Sam grabbed my arm fast and rough. "No. We will stay put." He ordered with a nod, that meant not to get involved.
He was my older brother but I did not want to sit and hide while a monster ran about. I snatched my arm from him. "I'm sorry brother, but I cannot stay and wait. People are in danger. I will help them."
"Joseph, listen to me." Sam pleaded in a whisper. "You can get hurt without me and you don't know what's out there. We don't run out unprepared, we do our research first." He says and I didn't care if his new girlfriend overhears.
"Sorry, Sam but I can't do this normal little brother thing anymore. I have to do what our parents died doing, I have to continue their duty." I say, then rushed passed him toward the lady that stood covered from head to.
This was the first I've ever met a female hunter that was not accompanied by a male counterpart.
She very well seemed young yet experienced.
The lady cautiously stepped back once as I stood in front of her. "Hi, ma'am. My name is Joseph Hector Winchester, and I am a hunter. I want to help you kill what's out there and keep these people safe." I say.
