Chapter 5: Lily Leaves Her Mark

"Oh, Lily!" James exclaimed as the six friends carried Lily to the hospital wing. "Please

be alright; please wake up so that I may see your pretty face smiling at me."

"Prongs, please give it a rest!" Remus pleaded. It was obvious that he was having

enough trouble trying to support Lily's weight without James' continuous rantings of 'love.'

The group continued in silence for a few minutes, but all good things must come to an

end, as James suddenly spoke out again.

"Hey guys, ummm, I think we might have a problem here," he said, putting his face close

to Lily's. "I don't think she's breathing anymore!"

"WHAT?" They all yelled. Remus and Hermione helped ease Lily to the floor, and

everyone put their faces close to Lily's to check for breathing.

"Hang on, everyone," James said, breaking through the crowd around Lily. "She probably

needs mouth-to-mouth, and I'm a professional!"

"Prongs, you are so stupid sometimes!" Remus bellowed. "She's breathing just fine!" He

started to pull on Lily's arm again and added to the rest of the group, "Why don't we just drag

her to the hospital wing, ok? She weighs a ton!"

Ron quickly took Lily's other arm and helped Remus pull her through the hallway.

"I'll run ahead and let Madam Pomfrey know you're coming," Hermione suggested, and

took off down the hall at a jog.

"Well, lets continue on!" Sirius said, trying to cheer the group up. He and James started

to march down the hall in front of Remus, Ron, and Harry, who were pulling Lily along with all

the strength they could muster.

As the group headed up the stairs for the fourth floor, Sirius gave a little nod to James,

and they both started humming something that sounded strangely like "Seventy-Six

Trombones."

"Will you two give it a rest?" Ron asked exasperatedly. "You are giving me a headache!"

However James and Sirius pretended that they did not hear him, and continued marching and

singing down the hall to the hospital wing.

When the five boys finally dragged Lily through the hospital wing doors, it was obvious

that Madam Pomfrey was well prepared for their arrival.

"Set her on the bed over there," she said, running over to the red-headed girl. "Now tell

me, what exactly happened?"

"She fainted form shock," Remus supplied with a sly look at James, who still had a

worried expression on his face.

"Yeah!" Sirius laughed. "Landed face-down in her dinner! It was friggin' hilarious!"

"Well, that's easy enough to cure," Madam Pomfrey sighed. "Let me get the potion I

need," and she hustled back into her office to retrieve the bottle.

"Not to worry, my love," James said, grasping Lily's hand. "Thee shall be awake soon to

share her true feelings of love with me." Sirius, Harry, Ron, Hermione, and Remus laughed

quietly, covering their mouths with their hands. Remus did his famous"eye roll routine" as well.

"Here we are," Madam Pomfrey said joyfully as she came out of her office with a small

blue bottle. "One tablespoon of this stuff will do the trick!"

Hermione lifted Lily's head up as the nurse poured the potion down the redhead's throat.

For a few seconds, everyone stared at Lily, James still clutching her hand and with concern on

his face.

After a few moments of silence, Lily rotated her shoulders as if she were testing them

out. A little smile came on her face and she gave a small sigh.

"My lady stirs," James said excitedly as he put his head closer to Lily's.

Lily stopped moving and the smile vanished from her face instantly. She opened her eyes

slowly and blinked a few times.

"Oh, my darling," James said. "Please speak so that I may hear your beautiful voice!"

Lily's emerald eyes grew wide as she suddenly erupted and yelled in James' face,

"POTTER! Get away from me this instant!"

The next thing James knew, he was out cold from Lily's strong, hard punch.

-Back in the Gryffindor Common Room, 1976-

"Moony, Padfoot, Prongs," Peter Pettigrew squeaked, rushing into the Gryffindor

Common Room. "I'm back from talking to Professor McGonagall!"

Peter gasped when he say that his friends were not there; only a small cauldron, some

sheets of parchment, and a quill and ink, sitting on the table by the fire, remained the

Marauders' (minus one) potion brewing.

'They must have drank the potion without me,' Peter thought sadly, somewhat

disappointed that his friends had not waited for him.

He ran over to the table and looked into the cauldron. There was enough potion left for

one person. He quickly filled the vial with the remaining liquid and ran out of the common

room, eager to drink the potion where the other students in the common room wouldn't see.

'I'll go to the Great Hall,' he thought. 'Dinner is over, so no one will be there.'

But as he jumped down the last three stairs of the marble staircase, he ran into none

other then the greasy-haired, sneering Severus Snape.

"Sorry, Severus," Peter squeaked again. "I didn't see you."

"Don't play nice with me, Pettigrew," Snape said, grinding his teeth together. "Where are

Black and Potter? They are going to pay for jinxing me in the hallway today."

"I don't know, Severus," Peter said honestly. "I was just looking for them and Remus."

He shivered slightly from Snape's menacing glare.

"You little liar," Snape replied, knowing he could do far more damage to the short

chubby boy than Peter could do to him. "You four always know where each other are."

"Seriously, Severus," Peter pleaded. "I don't have a clue where they are." In an effort to

hide the vial from Snape, Peter tried to put it behind his back. Snape, however, noticed Peter's

sudden movement and snatched the vial away from him.

"And what is this?" Snape asked, staring at the potion, a grin forming on his face.

"Another way of humiliating one of your classmates? Maybe pouring it into my drink at

breakfast?"

"No, of course not Severus," Peter replied weakly. "I would never do something like

that."

"Then tell me what it is supposed to do," Snape sneered. "Is it poison?"

"No," Peter said, then, seeing the look on Snape's face, continued, "It's supposed to

speed up time. The others drank it without me, so if you d-don't mind, could I p-please have it

back so I can join my f-friends?" It was quite obvious that while Peter was trying his best to

stand up to Snape, in reality he was terrified of him. Snape gave Peter his famous smirk.

"So you actually want to drink this stuff?" Snape asked, glaring at the vial. "And it's

going to speed up time?" Peter nodded, fear covering his pudgy face.

"In that case," Snape said, smiling, "I think I'll drink it. I'll tell your friends that you

gave it up for a good cause."

Peter looked at Snape, shock spreading over his face. It was obvious that he didn't want

Snape to drink the potion, but that he was too scared to tell Snape to give it back.

"But first," Snape continued, thoroughly enjoying taunting Peter, "I'll test this so-called

potion, just to make sure it isn't poison." With that, he turned on his heal and marched toward

the dungeons, eager to find the results of the potion's power.

'Dang!' Peter thought, staring after Snape. 'I had my chance to stand up to him, and I

didn't! I hope Remus, Sirius, and James don't find out about this!'

Hanging his head, he turned around and slowly started the long trek back to Gryffindor

Tower.
