Two weeks passed and they hadn't gotten around to speak with Harry about Jay being his father. But he hadn't asked either. At first a hard case had kept them busy. And then the time never seemed to fit. Harry had started playing baseball with his school team which kept him in the loop.

Jane entered the morgue for the scheduled autopsy of their current case and was confused when it was empty. She checked her watch and got even more confused when she noticed that she was on time. But where the hell was Maura?

"She had to go to pick her son up from school." Susie spoke. Jane almost jumped. She hadn't heard the criminologist enter the room. When she turned she saw Susie standing in the doorway with a stack of files in her hands.

"Is he sick?" Jane asked, hoping that everything was okay with her son. But Susie couldn't tell. "She just mentioned that there had been an emergency, but she didn't specify detective." The petite said.

She had many more questions but left as she saw no point in asking Susie who obviously didn't know much more. After leaving the morgue she pulled her mobile out of her pocket and cursed at the sight of a missed call from Maura.

"I should check my phone more often now that I have a kid." She mumbled to herself as she bumped into Frost. The young detective looked highly uncomfortable, and Jane assumed that it was because of being in the morgue where the dead bodies were. It only occurred to her later that he might have heard what she had said.

He gave her a confused look as he apologized politely for running into her. But Jane wouldn't have it. If she hadn't been so occupied with her phone she would have seen him and said so. He blushed slightly and Jane almost felt sorry for the shy detective. It still felt awkward to act as if she didn't know him, when she knew him so well once. Maybe one day… she mused. One day I'm going to tell him. But not now.

"How can I help you?" she asked, assuming that he had been on the lookout for her. He otherwise avoided the morgue as if it was a torture chamber. Dead people made him nauseous. Frosts blush grew a bit deeper. "Actually, I was looking for dr. Isles." He stated, glancing to the morgue.

"Oh." Jane mumbled. "She's not here. I don't know when she'll be back." She informed him and he nodded his understanding. Jane's phone rang and she hurried to pick up when seeing that it was Maura. She watched Frost walk off to the elevators while speaking "Hey Maur. What happened?"

A deep sigh filled the line and it fueled Jane's fear. "Is he okay?" she asked with an urgent tone. Maura sighed again. "Yes. Apart from a blue eye and a bruised fist. The principal said that he started a fight with a classmate during their first break. He is suspended from school for three days." Maura informed Jane who could hear her walking somewhere close to a street.

"I'm going to take him to the precinct to check him out and take care of his wounds. He can do his homework in my office while we do the autopsy." Jane heard a door being opened. She listened closely but couldn't hear a word from Harry. She assumed though that he was with Maura.

"Looks like we'll have to have a talk." She muttered. "Or did he say why he started a fight?"

"No, and yes. We will have to." Jane bit her lower lip as she heard Maura speak to their son. "Put the seatbelt on honey." She didn't sound mad at him, more desperate and Jane wondered if it had happened before. The detective admired Maura for always being patient and nice to him. Never once in the months had she heard her yell at Harry.

Her boy mumbled a weary "Yes mum." Which almost made her chuckle because it reminded her so much of herself.

R&I

After fetching some coffee for Maura and herself and checking in at the bullpen, Jane walked back into the morgue a good 20 minutes later. Harry was sitting on what Jane called the most uncomfortable couch in the world and let his feet dangle. Maura was rummaging around in some cabinet to find bandages.

He was holding a bag of ice onto his left eye, the healthy one was directed at Jane as she entered. He looked scared she thought. Did he expect her to be mad? Maybe. If she was him, she would probably be afraid to be scolded. She remembered all the time her parents had acted as if she was a deception when she had done something wrong.

"Hey buddy." She put on an extra friendly smile. Her voice was soft, and she sat down next to him. He still looked afraid. "Hi." He sounded defeated. "I heard you went to war today." She said lightly and gently touched the back of his head. He shrugged.

Maura glanced at them. "I need to get some ointment from the stock. I'll be right back. Don't move!" Jane almost sat more upright at the command. Damn, that woman could be bossy she thought.

"Do you want to tell me what happened?" Jane asked softly after the doc had left the room. He shook his head. "Nothing." He mumbled.

"Oh, come on, you can tell me you know? I'm pretty sure that you had a reason to start the fight."

He shook his head again and clenched his teeth. Jane studied him for a while, thinking about what to say. He seemed to stare onto the floor. "I'm not going to be mad" Jane promised noticing how he held one hand over the other. He gave her a doubtful look.

Maura returned and Jane watched how she took care of his wounds. No one spoke a word until she was finished. "You can sit at my desk to do your homework." The petite told him afterwards. "I have some work to do. We'll talk about it once we get home." She said calmly. Something told Jane that this wasn't the first time that the doc had to handle such a situation.

The boy nodded and avoided eye contact with his parents.

R&I

There were still many questions running through her head as she drove home. There had been no time to ask them during the autopsy and much less later when she had to take care of the investigation. It was late and she hated the fact that she hadn't been able to leave work earlier.

Harry was probably already in bed and she had missed the talk. Or so she assumed. She found Maura sitting on the couch, reading a book, when she entered their home. The doc stood to greet her with a kiss. "I'm going to warm your dinner up." She said as she walked towards the kitchen. Jane followed her.

When the plate with the spaghettis was in the microwave oven Jane pulled Maura into a hug. She felt arms wrapping around her own waist and Maura relax against her body. They hugged for a long time and didn't interrupt when the beep from the microwave announced that the food was ready.

"How often has it already happened?" Jane asked after a while and Maura pulled away to take the plate out to place it onto the breakfast bar. "I don't know. It hasn't happened in a long time though." She said in a pensive tone. Their eyes met over the bar and locked. Maura sounded tired.

Jane walked a few steps backwards so that she could peek out of the door. Harry was sitting on the stairs in his Pj's. When he saw her, he stood and ran into his room. Jane glanced at Maura who poured herself a glass of wine.

"How did you know that he was there?" Maura asked after Jane explained her strange behavior. "I was once a kid too." She shrugged. "We used to sit at the stairs and listen to our parents. We knew that they would only talk about the important things when we were in bed."

There was silence for a while and Jane ate half her plate despite not being hungry. But she hadn't eaten properly the whole day and she didn't want to put more sorrows onto Maura. It all seemed to be a game of patience, and god knew that patience was not her biggest virtue. But she tried.

"Have you talked to him?" she asked, and Maura nodded. "Yes. But he didn't explain himself." She stated. "Maybe you could try?" Her voice was hopeful.

"Of course. I will see what I can do. But he didn't want to talk to me either when I tried earlier. So, I don't have much hope." She replied honestly.
