I have been writing this story for months now, but have struggled with motivation to get it finished. I have finally got it all done in a rough draft, and will edit each chapter as I come to post it, so hopefully it will flow as I intended.
Disclaimer: I do not own YuGiOh, or any of the characters. The only characters I do own are the characters I have invented for this story.
Warnings: This story is likely to remain T rated, but there might be the occasional swear word, or a little innuendo and smut here and there.
Fall of an Empire.
Prologue.
Hatred bubbled under Kato Yamato's skin, like an itch he could not scratch. For years he had lived with the knowledge that had things gone as they should that day, he would have been the one to inherit Kaiba Corp.
It had taken him over ten years of scheming and planning to get to the point where he could make his move, but finally the time was here. He had expected it to be far more difficult than this, but Seto Kaiba had fallen into his trap like a fly to a web.
"Place him in stasis," he ordered his men. "He can't be trusted not to somehow wake up before we get his mind uploaded."
He watched on, remembering the day that Seto Onishi, and his little cry baby brother, first came to the orphanage. Seto may have been younger than him by three years, but that didn't stop the brat from thinking he should be the boy who called the shots.
Seto was tall and quite strong for his age, and it made him stand out from his peers, who seemed to look up to him for protection from the older bullies.
Their first real encounter had been when Seto caught Kato and his friends putting Mokuba, the snotty little cry baby brother, in his place. The little snot had been playing on a swing and was such a prime target for some bullying.
Seto had confronted them. A bit of a fight broke out and Seto somehow managed to kick Kato's ass, humiliating him in front of his gaggle of friends.
As punishment for fighting, both boys spent a day locked in their rooms, which Seto seemed to take quite calmly.
Kato on the other hand was fuming.
In the two weeks following, they managed to avoid each other. However, the teachers were always organising games for the kids to play, and it was not long before they clashed again.
No matter what game or sport it was, Seto always had to be the best.
They played a game of Shogi: Seto won.
They played tennis: Seto won.
They ran cross country races around the woods: yet again, Seto won. Even snakes and ladders (a game of luck) Seto would win. And if that was not bad enough, the bastard would laugh that winning was too easy; bragging that there was no one in the orphanage who could beat him in at anything.
Then came the day of the adoption visits.
Gozaburo Kaiba was a well known multi-billionaire. He had lost his only son a few months earlier after a tragic accident and now he was looking for a child he could adopt, who would become the heir to his empire.
The kids were all desperately hoping that Mister Kaiba might be their ticket to a much better, more successful life.
Having looked through all of the children's profiles and backgrounds, Kato Yamato had been his first choice. The adoption papers had been drawn up, and Gozaburo was just about to go to the office and sign them, when Seto marched up to him bold as brass, and challenged him to a game of chess.
The CEO accepted, Seto won, and he and Mokuba went home with their new father, leaving Kato to fester in that orphanage for another four years, until his hopeless mother suddenly decided that she wanted her son back, because he was now old enough to go out and earn money to fund her booze and smokes.
But that was all in the past now, because Kato could finally bury all of the hurt and the anger and the humiliation, and take control of what should have been his all along – Kaiba Corp.
::::::::::::
Just like the forward thinking scientists of the past, Seto Kaiba considered himself a visionary; a pioneer, pushing back the boundaries of human understanding, using his superior intellect and an unbound desire to be the first to make exciting new discoveries.
Of course, had it not been for the Pharaoh, his mind would never have been opened to such possibilities in the first place! But the realisation that there might be hundreds of unexplored dimensions existing within the fabric of the universe, and within our minds, was brought to him when he had to deal with Diva and the Plana.
The Plana had been sloppy in leaving behind their technology, and Atem had been sloppy for not noticing they had left it -or was he? Maybe it was deliberate.
But Seto was not complaining; without the cube, unlocking the science that enabled him to traverse the invisible strands that held the fabric of the universe together would have been almost impossible.
Seto was just grateful, and relieved, that the technology had fallen into his hands, and not into the hands of someone... less deserving, or responsible.
He had worked tirelessly to replicate the abilities of the cube, and had even managed to improve upon its original design.
Seto was under no illusion as to the enormity of what he had achieved. Powerful men would kill him to get their greedy hands on such technology, but their feeble minds would not withstand the power contained within.
Seto knew from his connection to the Millennium Rod, that he needed to be careful not to become so absorbed in the Cube that he allowed it to consume him, as it clearly had when it preyed upon the 'vengeful' personality of the feeble minded Diva.
But had it already consumed him? Was it using his inborn need to be the most powerful man in the world to do it's bidding? The very nature of the cube was to traverse dimensions and spread its influence. And he had already allowed it to keep him away from home for longer than he had originally intended –but, oh, what wonders it had shown him!
A flashing signal on his dimensional transporter, that also doubled as his duel disk, suddenly alerted Seto to the fact that someone was desperately trying to contact him. He had left specific instructions that no one should contact him unless it was an emergency. The only person allowed to do so was Mokuba.
But it was not Mokuba trying to contact him, it was the science team.
Fearing it must be an extreme emergency, he activated the homing beacon on his transporter. A circular ring of light appeared around him, and in a second he was turned into to millions of Atoms and sucked into the stream.
As usual, there was a feeling of immense pressure, followed by a tingling sensation, as flashes of light and sound rushed by him in an infinite blur. The feeling of mild nausea as he passed through the cosmos was something Seto was now used to so it did not bother him.
He felt a jolt.
That was different?!
It only took a split second for him to realise that something was very wrong! Instead of...
Those were his last thoughts before he lost consciousness.
How did you like the beginning? I would love to know, so please leave a comment down below.
