"Thank you." The human, who these strange creatures decided to call Ruby, dipped her head politely to Mr. Nosy, who held the door open for her. She walked into the big observatory, instantly feeling her body relax; she didn't even realize how tense she had been until she was safely inside. She wondered why that was, but she was distracted from her thoughts as she glanced around at her surroundings.

"So this is where you live?" she asked the friends as they followed her further into the observatory. She had a sense of familiarity like she's been here before she lost her memory. She even felt like she knew these strange creatures who were so welcoming to her, but they didn't know her, so clearly that couldn't be true… Could it? Why couldn't she remember anything?

Suddenly Mr. Small appeared in front of her. "Yes, it is," he answered, and he smiled up at the girl. "Do you like it?"

Ruby didn't reply right away. She looked over the rest of the room, her gaze lingering on the two chairs. By their sizes, it was easy to guess which one belonged to which man. There was also a couch, most likely for when they have company, she assumed. She caught a glimpse of the kitchen off to one side, and opposite of them, she saw a door which must lead to another part of the house.

"It looks cozy," the bright red haired human finally said, turning back to them. Then she saw the object that she had noticed sticking out of the roof when they were still some way down the road. "Do you actually use that telescope?" she asked, pointing to it.

"Of course, so we always know what is going on in town," Mr. Nosy explained as he walked over to the girl. Before she had time to respond, he pointed to her shoulder bag and said," I can take that if you want. That way you can get settled without having to worry about it," he added quickly, his eyes sparkling with wonder.

Ruby glanced down at her bag. It was the only thing she had that could be linked to the life she seemed to have forgotten; the writing on all the paper could have answers to her confused questions. Even the toy animal she had found under everything felt just as important as her necklace. She didn't want to risk losing anything.

"No thanks," she said with a shake of her head, and she slipped the bag around her body so it was hidden behind her. "I want to keep it close to me."

A frown formed on the light green man's face, but he didn't try to argue, only nodded as if showing that he respected her wishes.

For a few moments, an awkward silence fell, until finally Mr. Small spoke up again. "Our guest room is right over there," he told the girl. He pointed to a door on the other side of the telescope, a different one than she noticed earlier. "That'll be your room for as long as you stay with us."

"Thanks." Ruby followed the orange man as he walked away; Mr. Nosy was keeping pace with them. His watchful eyes burned into her, but she forced herself not to turn to look at him. All his questions and the way he kept staring at her was making her very uncomfortable.

Once in the other room, Ruby glanced around. There was a single bed in here, and next to that was a small nightstand that had a lamp on it. She noticed another door that was on the opposite side of the bed. That must be a closet or something, she thought, deciding to check it out later when she was able to explore the house more.

The street outside could be seen from a window. Ruby went over there, passing Mr. Nosy on the way, and she frowned when she saw that he was still watching her every movement. She wished he would stop staring at her with that curious gaze of his.

She came to a halt in front of the window and looked out. A few residents walked by, but they seemed unaware of the girl inside the house. This is weird, she thought, again feeling like she's seen these creatures before, but she just couldn't remember where.

"Lovely, isn't it?"

Mr. Small's voice startled Ruby, making her spin around. The small man was standing behind her, clearly waiting for her to answer his question.

Ruby turned back to the window, murmuring," It's interesting, that's for sure." She glanced down at him as he took a step forward that brought him to her side. She thought about telling him how everything seemed so familiar, but then decided against it, realizing how weird that would sound. Instead, she said," I don't remember my old home, but I have a feeling it was nothing like here."

She continued to stare out the window when suddenly she caught a glimpse of something blue. A man with bandages on his head and lower half was walking down the sidewalk. Ruby watched with a mix of curiosity and concern as he tripped. Just then a yellow man with a huge smile on his face appeared from the opposite direction and spotted his blue friend laying on the ground in a daze. He helped him back to his feet. The blue one's mouth started moving, and the human imagined him thanking his friend. A moment later, the two walked off together, soon disappearing from sight.

Closing her eyes, Ruby tried to remember something about herself. At first, nothing came to her, and all she saw was the back of her eyelids. But right when she was about to give up, there was a flash of yellow, which grew brighter and brighter until suddenly a town opened up before her.

She gasped at the scene in front of her. The buildings around her were destroyed beyond recognition, and the road was torn up as if a giant hand had reached down from the clouds and clawed at the ground. Even in all the destruction, there still seemed to be something very familiar about her surroundings. It felt like she's been here before.

She shivered at the eerie silence. She glanced around, but there was no sign of life. When she tried walking to go exploring, she found that she couldn't move. She suddenly realized that she couldn't feel her legs!

Panic struck her. What was happening?

Instinctively, she reached for her necklace, believing touching it would comfort her, but she didn't feel it around her neck. Alarm shot through her. She looked down, her gaze scanning around her feet, thinking it must have fallen off when she was transported to wherever she was. But she didn't see it.

I need to find it! She was now more desperate than ever to move from this spot.

As she continued to struggle to walk, a voice suddenly rang out through the deserted street. "Don't fear." The voice seemed to be talking to her. "I'm with you."

She opened her mouth to respond, but before she could, her surroundings changed. Now she was looking at the remains of a house she recognized almost immediately. It's the observatory! she thought, remembering where the best friends, who had taken her in, lived. I'm in Dillydale, she realized, now understanding why everything looked so familiar.

But what happened here? she wondered. Where is everyone? And why am I seeing this?

The voice spoke again, repeating what it said earlier. "I'm with you."

Ruby glanced around, expecting someone to be standing behind her, but she was the only one there. "Where are you?" she called out.

"Who are you talking to?" a different voice responded.

She was plunged back into darkness, and when she opened her eyes, she found herself in the bedroom, still staring out the window. The feeling rushed back to her legs, and she quickly felt for her necklace, sighing with relief. It was back around her neck and her body instantly relaxed.

The town isn't in ruins, she told herself, trying to calm her racing heart. The observatory is still standing. Everything is okay.

But what was that?

The girl glanced down to see Mr. Small looking up at her with concern in his eyes. Ruby opened her mouth to tell him what she just saw, but quickly reconsidered. Even though she knew they had the right to know their town could be in danger, it could also have been a simple daydream. She needed to make sure it was real before telling them. She didn't want to scare them for no reason.

To add onto her confusion, she could still hear the voice echoing in her head. I'm with you. The words made her feel safe, though she didn't know who was saying them even if the voice did sound familiar like she's heard it before. But she decided not to mention this either since she didn't know what it meant.

"It's nothing," she said as she turned her back to the window and walked over to the bed, pushing down the guilt about lying to them. She removed her shoulder bag and placed it on the floor beside the nightstand.

Mr. Nosy and Mr. Small looked at each other for a long moment before following her.

The light green Mr. Man was about to tell the girl what had happened when she had been spacing out, about the strange yellow light that had replaced the red sparkle behind the full moon in the pendant on her necklace. But a touch on his hip stopped him, and he looked down to see his friend shaking his head like he knew what Mr. Nosy was going to say.

"Well, we'll leave you to get settled," Mr. Small said to the human girl. "Come, Nose," he added, gesturing for him to follow as he walked out of the room.

For a minute, Mr. Nosy stayed where he was. He glanced at Ruby, seeing that she was now sitting on the bed. As he was trying to make up his mind whether to tell her about what happened with her necklace or not, the girl turned her head and the two locked eyes for just a second, before Mr. Nosy tore his gaze away, unable to look at her sorrowful expression. Then he hurried after his best friend, closing the door behind him.

"This girl is definitely odd," Mr. Small commented as soon as Mr. Nosy joined him in the living room. "I know we couldn't have left her out there by herself, but do you think we did the right thing? I mean, allowing her to stay here with us?" He looked up at his friend with troubled eyes.

Mr. Nosy glanced over his shoulder at the bedroom door before turning back to him, guessing that he must also be thinking about how her necklace had changed colors when Ruby was staring out the window. But he decided not to bring that up since Mr. Small had stopped him from telling her about it. Instead he pointed out," She had nowhere else to go, and like you said, we couldn't have just left her out there all alone. Maybe we are just making something out of nothing." No matter how weird this girl may seem, he had a feeling that they had done the right thing by offering her a place to stay.

"You're probably right," Mr. Small murmured. He glanced away for a second and then looked back at his friend. "But now that she's here, I guess I'm just a little worried. I mean, what do we know about taking care of a kid?" Uncertainty flashed in his eyes as he stared up at Mr. Nosy. "Especially one who can't remember anything about herself…"

Mr. Nosy shrugged. "All we can do is try to help her," he responded, now speaking more from a gut feeling than anything else. "We can offer her a bed to sleep in and food to eat, but I think that's about all we can do. The rest is up to her." He frowned when he realized how true that was. It's up to her to figure out who she is, he thought, hoping she'll tell them if she discovered anything out about herself.

"You're right." Mr. Small nodded, looking more relaxed now than when they first left the guest room. "On the bright side, she seems really friendly."

But Mr. Nosy barely heard him; he was thinking about Ruby. Questions were running through his mind: Where is she from? How did she get here? Why can't she remember anything? And most of all, he was wondering what was up with her necklace.

He thought maybe all of the answers could be in her bag. But he had a feeling that she wouldn't just hand it over to him, especially after the way she reacted when he offered to take it from her so she could get settled in.

"Mr. Nosy?"

Mr. Small's voice pulled Mr. Nosy's attention back to him. "Yeah?" he asked.

"What are you thinking about?" He was staring up at his best friend with a look that suggested he might already know what Mr. Nosy would tell him.

"I want to know more about her!" Mr. Nosy admitted, frowning and glancing at the door of the room they just left.

"But she can't remember anything," his friend reminded him gently.

Mr. Nosy was silent for a moment, wondering if he should tell Mr. Small what he was planning. He decided to finally come clean. "I'm going to look through her bag and see if I can learn anything about her."

Mr. Small just stared at his friend for a long while until at last he asked," And how are you going to get her bag?"

"I was hoping you would distract her so I could get it." Mr. Nosy spoke slowly and he blinked down at him, eager to see what he thought of his plan.

Mr. Small didn't say anything for a while. Then he turned his gaze away from him. "Let's give her some space right now," he finally said. "Come on," he quickly continued before Mr. Nosy had time to object. "You mentioned food earlier, and now I'm hungry. Let's go get lunch."

"Should we tell her that we're going out?" Mr. Nosy asked.

"You can go tell her." Mr. Small headed to the front door. "I'll wait for you," he promised as he went.

"Okay." Mr. Nosy walked across the living room to the guest room. He knocked on the door and opened it when he heard the girl invite him in. He stopped beside the bed where she was still sitting, but now she was looking down at something in her hands.

Glancing over her shoulder, he saw that it was a picture, and he guessed the humans in it were mother and daughter. The adult, who looked no older than twenty with long brown hair, was sitting on a couch, and a really young looking girl sat in her lap. The kid had bright red hair just like Ruby. She was even wearing the same necklace.

Then he noticed attached to the picture was another of a baby in a hospital incubator.

For several moments neither of them spoke. Finally Ruby broke the silence. "I found this in my bag," she told him, but she didn't turn to look at him. "She's my mother. And I think he's my brother," she added, gesturing to the picture of the baby.

Mr. Nosy thought about what she said before asking," What's his name?" Right after those words left his mouth, he remembered that she didn't even know her own name. How was she supposed to know the name of someone else?

As if in response to his question, Ruby flipped over the picture to reveal writing on the back. Mr. Nosy looked closer. In the spot where the adult female was on the other side of the photo was the words "mom (Anna)" and under that the name "Scarlet". "Nathan" was on the back side of the picture of the baby. The number five was beside Scarlet, which he guessed was her age at the time since the word "newborn" was beside her brother's name.

The human girl turned the picture back around and stared down at it. "I think my name is Scarlet," she finally said with a glance at him before quickly looking down at the photograph of her family again. "And I have a feeling that my mom gave this to me before—" She cut herself off as confusion shadowed her face.

"Before what?" Mr. Nosy couldn't stop himself from asking that question as he sat down beside her.

"I… I don't remember…" The girl, Scarlet, sighed and lowered the picture. "I have a feeling that it was something bad though." Bowing her head, she closed her eyes and gripped the necklace tightly. "I miss my family," she whispered.

Mr. Nosy stared at her, feeling sorry for the young human. "Are they…" He couldn't bring himself to finish that thought.

"I don't… know…" Scarlet took in a shaky breath and let it out slowly. "I hope they are still alive and that one day I'll see them again."

"Oh." For a few moments Mr. Nosy was lost for words, before remembering why he came in here in the first place. "Mr. Small and I are going into town to get something to eat," he told her. "Do you want to come with us?"

She let go of her necklace and turned to him, an uncertain look on her face, but he noticed at the mention of food, her eyes started shining. For a brief second, he wondered how long it's been since she last ate. "I am hungry," she muttered. "But I'm not sure if I'm ready to get out yet. I'm still really confused about everything…"

Mr. Nosy frowned. Then he thought of an alternative. "We can bring you something back, if you want?"

When he said that, she smiled. "Yes, please," she replied.

Mr. Nosy nodded and got to his feet. "We'll be back soon," he promised as he walked to the door, but before he left the room, he glanced over his shoulder to see the human girl reaching for the picture. As she laid down, she brought it to her chest and hugged it.

Then he heard her whisper," I will find you," as she closed her eyes.

With a deep sigh, he turned to leave, shutting the door behind him. He hoped that Scarlet's family was somewhere out there and that one day they would be reunited.

"She wants us to bring her something back," he told his best friend, joining him once again.

Mr. Small nodded and opened the front door, walking outside.

As he followed Mr. Small, the light green Mr. Man remembered what he discovered about the red haired girl. "Her name is Scarlet," he announced, glancing down at Mr. Small.

The small man looked surprised. "How did you learn that?" he asked.

"She found a picture in her bag," Mr. Nosy answered, also mentioning that she might have a brother named Nathan and that she hopes to find him and her mother, Anna.

Mr. Small was silent for a few moments as the two continued to walk down the sidewalk. "Well, she can stay with us until she remembers where they are," he finally said, and Mr. Nosy murmured in agreement, glad that his friend seemed to be over his worry about the strange girl. "Right then," Mr. Small went on, changing the subject. "Where should we have lunch?"

"Doesn't matter to me," the light green Mr. Man replied with a shrug. His mind was still on Scarlet. He felt sorry for her. It must be terrible not being able to remember anything, including her family and where they could be or even if they were still alive. He didn't know if there was anything he could do to help the young girl, but he would try to do whatever he could.

She's so nice and doesn't deserve any of this.
