After lunch, the best friends decided to go straight home to check on the human. They didn't like the idea of leaving her alone in an unknown place for very long.
There was a small box in Mr. Nosy's hand that was full of food for the red haired girl, and when he glanced down at it, he found his mind wandering to Scarlet. He hated not being able to find anything out about her, but he knew it must be harder on her since she has no memory of who she is.
Suddenly, he realized that he was falling behind. He ran to catch up to Mr. Small, keeping a good grip on the box, but he skidded to a halt when he noticed something that seemed odd. Turning his head, he saw someone standing in between two houses, staring straight at him. She was orange with a round body; her nose was yellow and she had dark brown hair. Floating above her head was a black top hat that had a pink flower pinned to it, and she wore red, sparkling shoes.
What confused him the most was the long black object with a white tip that she held in her hand.
As he looked on, she gave him a sly kind of smile, like she was up to something. Then she waved the stick-like thing and vanished before his eyes.
All he could do was stare where she had just been, wondering if he had only imagined seeing her.
Footsteps made him turn. Mr. Small was walking back to him. "Why did you stop?" he asked as he came up.
Mr. Nosy opened his mouth to tell him about the mysterious Little Miss, but before he could, he heard someone calling out to the friends. Spinning around, they saw Mr. Scatterbrain casually crossing the street to meet them. There was an unusual serious expression on his face as he dipped his hat to them, stopping in front of his friends.
"Good day, Mr. Small," he greeted the small Mr. Man before turning to his light green friend, nodding slightly to him. "Mr. Nosy."
"Oh, hey, Mr. Scatterbrain." Mr. Nosy eyed the magenta Mr. Man, forgetting all about the unknown Little Miss he had seen only moments before when suddenly he felt like there was something not right with Mr. Scatterbrain. But he quickly dismissed that thought, knowing that his friend had always seemed a bit on the weird side.
If Mr. Small noticed him acting strange, he made no sign of it. He just lifted his hat and said his usual greeting. "Good tidings." He put his top hat back on his head as he asked," What can we do for you, Mr. Scatterbrain?"
Mr. Scatterbrain didn't answer Mr. Small's question. Instead he pointed to the box that Mr. Nosy was holding. "What's in there?" His eyes locked with Mr. Nosy's, and the light green Mr. Man felt a shiver run down his spine.
There's nothing to be afraid of. He reminded himself how selfless and innocent Mr. Scatterbrain was. There was no reason to fear him.
"Food," explained Mr. Nosy, and then he went into detail about how they found a human girl on the other side of town and that she can't remember anything about herself. He even told his friend that at first they called her Ruby because of her bright red hair until she found a family photo in her bag and discovered that her name's Scarlet. Lastly he added that she has a brother called Nathan, but of course she doesn't know where her family could be since she can't remember anything.
It was strange to see a thoughtful look cross Mr. Scatterbrain's face as Mr. Nosy talked. The best friends exchanged glances when Mr. Nosy was done explaining, and he saw that now Mr. Small was starting to think there was something odd going on with Mr. Scatterbrain. However neither of them mentioned it as they turned back to their friend, not wanting to be rude.
"Very interesting," the magenta Mr. Man murmured, spacing out for a second as he seemed to go into a deep thought. Then he focused on his friends once more. "Are you sure she can't remember anything?" he asked unexpectedly.
After sharing an uncertain glance with his little buddy, Mr. Nosy turned back to Mr. Scatterbrain. "That's what she is telling us," he replied. Then he quickly added before his friend had a chance to speak again," Are you okay, Mr. Scatterbrain?" He knew he couldn't just stand here and see him act completely out of character without asking him about it.
"Yes," Mr. Small agreed with a concerned expression on his face. "You don't seem like yourself today."
Suddenly a flash of anger appeared in his eyes as he snapped," I'm fine."
This surprised the friends so much that they both gasped and just stared at Mr. Scatterbrain. There is definitely something not right here, Mr. Nosy thought, wondering what could be wrong with his friend.
Then Mr. Scatterbrain relaxed and asked in a gentler tone," Can I see this girl?"
"Why?" asked Mr. Nosy, feeling uncomfortable around him all of the sudden, and he wasn't sure if he should go anywhere near Scarlet if he wasn't acting like himself. If he didn't seem so out of it and short tempered, Mr. Nosy wouldn't see why he couldn't meet the human, but he didn't want his friend to frightened the young girl, especially since he was scaring the two Mr. Men who have known him for a very long time now.
But it seems like he's a completely different person today, the light green Mr. Man thought, remembering that yesterday he was nice and cheerful like always.
Mr. Scatterbrain shrugged. "I just want to meet her," he answered.
It was a few moments until finally Mr. Small nodded. "Okay then, follow us."
I'll make sure to keep a good eye on him so he doesn't scare Scarlet, Mr. Nosy thought, glancing over his shoulder to see Mr. Scatterbrain right behind them as they entered their house.
Once inside, Mr. Nosy closed the door before walking over to where the chairs were, setting the box on the table beside them. His best friend's voice made him look over his shoulder. "She's in there," Mr. Small told Mr. Scatterbrain as he pointed to Scarlet's room.
As Mr. Scatterbrain walked across the living room, Mr. Small joined his friend beside the chairs. "Isn't it strange that he wants to meet Scarlet?" Mr. Nosy whispered to his buddy, keeping a close eye on his magenta friend as he left the two to enter the bedroom.
Mr. Small had a worried expression on his face. "Very strange," he replied. "And didn't you notice that he wasn't acting like himself?"
"Yes," answered Mr. Nosy with a frown. "He never gets angry, especially with us." He tore his gaze away from the door and stared down at his friend. "Do you think there is something wrong with him?"
With a shake of his head, Mr. Small murmured," I have no idea." Then he sighed and added," Let's follow him to make sure he doesn't frighten Scarlet."
Mr. Nosy didn't want to believe someone as gentle as Mr. Scatterbrain could harm anyone on purpose, but the way he was acting toward his two closest friends, he didn't want Scarlet to be alone with him.
When they got to Scarlet's room, it was empty besides Mr. Scatterbrain; there was no sign of the red haired girl.
"I wonder where she went," murmured Mr. Nosy as he turned around to take in all of the room in case he missed something.
Mr. Small shrugged as a concerned look appeared in his eyes while Mr. Scatterbrain glanced about before turning to his two friends. "I don't see anybody," he said with a hint of annoyance in his tone.
"She must have wandered off," guessed Mr. Small as he shared a look with Mr. Nosy, clearly thinking the same thing his friend was.
No doubt about it, Mr. Nosy decided in his head, something is definitely not right about Mr. Scatterbrain…
Even though he was starting to worry about his magenta friend, Mr. Nosy was also curious to know where Scarlet was. "But where could she have gone?" he questioned.
"No idea," his little buddy responded.
Mr. Scatterbrain looked about some more, only seeming to get more upset. Then he seemed to give up on his search as he turned back to his friends. "I have to go," he suddenly announced, walking over to the door. "I promised Miss. Calamity that I'd meet her in the park." Before he exited the room, he stopped and added," But when you find her, I want to meet this girl." Then he disappeared through the entrance of the room, leaving the two to stare after him.
"That was odd," Mr. Small murmured, and his friend nodded in agreement.
But then Mr. Nosy got distracted when he looked at the bed and realized that Scarlet's bag was pushed under it, only the strap visible. "That's weird," he muttered as he walked over there, pulling it out. Was she trying to hide this? Probably from me, he thought, remembering the looks she gave him when he glanced at her bag.
Now is my chance to look through it when she's not here! he realized as he dropped the bag on the bed and opened it, starting to pull stuff out. Soon the bed was covered in folders, loose papers, and pencils. He gazed over the papers, scanning all the writing he saw, but they didn't make sense to him. He noticed that there were mainly names and a few notes on each paper. The more he looked, the more confused he got, but he continued to read out of curiosity.
Something fell out between the papers, and, when he placed the papers down, he picked up the picture of Scarlet's family, putting it on the bed so it wouldn't get lost.
He turned back to the bag, surprised to see a toy ring-tailed lemur at the bottom, hidden under a few more pieces of paper.
Mr. Nosy was about to reach for the stuffed animal when suddenly he heard a voice behind him.
"What do you think you are doing?"
He jumped in surprise and turned around to see Scarlet glaring at him.
She stormed over to him, anger in her eyes and looking like a completely different person than who she was before the friends left. Mr. Nosy even noticed that the light in her necklace was now blue, instead of red, like it was before, and it shone brightly, as if it was more than a picture. He opened his mouth to ask her about it, but the girl went on angrily before he could.
"I would yell at you, but I have a huge headache right now!" she growled, snatching the papers off the bed and shoving them back into her bag, covering up the toy before putting the folders and pencils in it as well. She picked up the photo that was on the bed, gently placing it on top of everything in her bag. "I need to rest," she added as she put the bag on the floor," so if you two wouldn't mind leaving me alone for a while, okay?"
Mr. Small walked over to the red haired girl. "Where did you go?" he asked her. "A friend of ours wanted to meet you."
"Oh." Scarlet blinked down at him, the anger suddenly fading, and she seemed to be back to that nice girl they met earlier that day. And before Mr. Nosy's eyes, the light changed from blue to red, and he was left speechless. "I'm sorry. I wanted to explore your house; I was getting tired of being shut up in this room."
Suddenly Mr. Nosy remembered Scarlet's box of food, and, wanting to get away, he went to fetch it. He grabbed the box and was about to return to the room when he spotted a binder hidden behind one of the chairs. He didn't remember seeing that when they got back a little bit ago.
Confused, he reached for it.
Strange, he thought as he stared down at the red cover. He was about to open it when he heard Mr. Small calling his name. Quickly Mr. Nosy hid the binder behind the chair again and got up.
"Yes?" he asked his friend as he turned around.
Mr. Small was standing behind him. "Why did you leave?" he asked.
"I forgot Scarlet's food," he explained, pointing to the box.
For a moment Mr. Small was silent. Then he spoke up again. "I have a feeling that something isn't right," he admitted with a frown. "First Mr. Scatterbrain seems off, and now Scarlet is acting like she is annoyed." He looked even more upset as he glanced at the door to Scarlet's room. "I hope we did the right thing," he went on. "You know, inviting her to stay with us."
Mr. Nosy looked at the binder out of the corner of his eye, wondering if he should tell his friend about it. He decided not to. "I'm sure we did," he assured Mr. Small, though he wasn't sure how effective it would be on the small Mr. Man since he seemed really worried. He also didn't mention the change of colors in the girl's necklace. If Mr. Small saw it, he didn't say anything about it either. "She did mention that she has a headache," he added. "That's probably why she's annoyed." He didn't say anything about Mr. Scatterbrain because he had no idea what could have been bothering him.
Mr. Small didn't respond to his friend, only frowned and sighed.
"Come on," Mr. Nosy spoke up, still holding onto the box. "Let's give Scarlet her food." He began to walk back to the room, aware that his little buddy was right behind him. It took all his might not to look back at the binder behind the chair. He will have to come back to get it later.
