Chapter 7
February 15th, 1998
Lucas rubbed his face tiredly as he sat outside on the balcony. He spent most of last night trying to create a skill to disguise his Purple Energy.
After showing Jason the egg, they agreed they would set up a Tweak account and plan their first Livestream the following day. He spent the day getting to know Jason as they talked about plans and aspirations for their journey. It was surprising how much time Jason spent planning, and Lucas realised just how much it meant to his new friend.
Dinnertime was an awkward affair. When Dad mentioned he wanted to talk to Jason afterwards, it was only then that Lucas realised the consequences. He panicked, and he was sure his strange behaviour was noticed. But he couldn't help himself.
Dad would discover that someone experimented on him and probably would insist on getting tested for any anomalies. He realised it would be best to reveal his Blue Energy to distract him from thinking there may be something wrong. But he needed time to create a skill that could disguise his Purple Energy.
Lucas convinced Dad to wait until the next day to talk to Jason and then excused himself, saying he was tired. He practically ran from the room in his haste. Yeah, not suspicious at all.
Lucas did not have a frame of reference for the skill. He ended up with the simple solution of first using {Aura Manipulation} as a visual aid and then trying to change the nature of the energy. This, of course, was costly, so he had to repeatedly spam {Meditation} to recover his {Aura}. However, this seemed to be the wrong way of going about it because no matter how much he tried, he couldn't get the skill to work. He didn't have enough knowledge and experience to create such a skill. Or maybe his {Aura Manipulation} was still far too low in developing such a skill.
In the end, he cheated.

Increases Aura by 1%
Increases Aura Shaping by 1%
Losing another free skill choice was not ideal, but the importance of hiding his Purple Energy was such that the sacrifice was worth the price. Was it absolutely necessary to hide it from his parents? No, he feared being rejected by them for being something different. There was still the mystery of the Awakened Quest he wanted to resolve before he ever considered telling them.
Lucas grabbed some clothes and entered the bathroom. The shower revived him somewhat after spending fifteen minutes under the hot deluge.
Lucas dried himself off with a towel and dressed quickly. He wiped the condensation off the mirror and recoiled in horror when he met his reflection. His eyes were a different colour, a light purple. Before he could comprehend the change, his eyes darkened into the familiar chocolate brown.
Lucas rubbed his eyes and looked in the mirror again, but they remained the same. Explaining the strange occurrence as a lack of sleep, he brushed his teeth and headed downstairs.
Everyone was in the dining room. After greeting them, Lucas sat next to Jason and Abigail.
Jason leaned over and whispered. "Your Dad has already asked me about Dr Potts. Sorry, mate."
"Don't worry about it," Lucas said quietly. "There's no avoiding the situation. It looks like it's my turn to be interrogated."
Abigail poked him in the side. "What are you whispering about?"
"I was just saying that I have a nosy little sister," Lucas tweaked her nose.
"Eat your breakfast," David ordered, "then we need to talk to you, Lucas."
"Yes, sir," Lucas saluted. David did not look amused. Sophia placed a hand on his arm and whispered in his ear. David listened before nodding, relaxing a touch. The Finch's were watching the drama with curiosity, but Vincent merely looked bored. Then again, that was his default state.
Lucas had little appetite, so he only consumed a bowl of fruit salad.
"You look tired," Sophia commented. "Did you get any sleep?"
Lucas shrugged one shoulder. "Some," he lied. Standing up, he took his bowl to the kitchen. Mr Mime was cleaning up but gave him an odd look when he entered.
"Are you still annoyed about yesterday?" Lucas asked. "It was a joke, I swear."
Mr Mime shook her head and pointed at her eyes, then at him. Lucas shrugged apologetically at her, showing his confusion. Mr Mime sighed and went back to work but kept shooting glances at him. Lucas retreated from the kitchen, and he tried to figure out what the Pokemon was attempting to impart.
"Mr Mime is a Psychic Pokemon, so why can't she communicate telepathically?" Lucas asked, returning to the dining room.
"Technically, they can," Sophia replied. "But Psychic power that affects the mind works by flooding energy into the target's brain. It will damage a human mind if they are not bonded with the Pokemon. It's illegal to command a Pokemon to use it on a human. Pokemon have a lot of Psychic skills that are very dangerous if misused."
"There is some equipment that can protect people from different Psychic attacks," David said. "We need to equip you with a set at some point if you're going to become a trainer. Wild Pokemon don't have the same restriction."
Lucas nodded and sat back down, waiting for his parents to finish.
A few minutes later, David spoke to Sarah. "We need to talk to Lucas privately. Can you keep an eye out for Abigail?"
Sarah nodded amidst Abigail's protest that "she was not a baby."
Lucas followed his parents and Vincent into the living room and sat down. Three pairs of eyes stared at him intently.
Lucas rubbed his head awkwardly. "Why do I feel like I'm in an interrogation?"
"We talked to Jason," David said. "He told us about the experiments. Did you know anything about this?"
"Only when Jason told me last night," Lucas answered. "How else would I know?"
"Have you noticed something different about yourself?" Sophia asked softly.
"Besides the whole waking up from a three-year coma with no memories?" Lucas asked sarcastically.
"Watch it," David growled.
Sophia sighed and sat down next to him, and grabbed his hand. "We are not handling this well." She took a breath. "Do you know how it feels to watch your son laying in a coma for three years, knowing that the chances of him surviving are remote? Then to find out our son had woken up; the disbelief we felt as we drove to the hospital. To go from absolute despair to joy in the span of an hour."
Lucas looked down, unable to hold eye contact with her. He hated how upset his Mother was, but he also hated genuine emotion this raw. He had run from it his entire life. Sophia stroked his hand in comfort.
"Now we find out that the horrible Doctor was doing illegal research with our son. If he weren't already dead, he would soon wish he was after I finished with him. So I need to know if there is anything we should be worried about, son. Please."
Sophia hugged him, and Lucas didn't pull away. They sat there for a few minutes until she let go and wiped her eyes.
"I apologise for coming across as angry with you," David said. "Nothing could be further from the truth. I am angry at the situation and worried it would harm you somehow."
Luca nodded. "There is one thing, but I'm not sure if it is the result of the experiments." He held up his hand and activated {Energy Shroud} and {Aura Manipulation} together. A bead of Blue Energy appeared on his finger, and Sophia gasped from beside him.
Lucas cancelled the skills and looked at the reactions. David and Vincent looked flabbergasted, while Sophia looked overjoyed.
"You're an Aura User?" Sophia asked quickly.
"I don't know if I developed it naturally," Lucas said, "or if it resulted from the experiments. But I know I feel fine otherwise. In fact, I'm improving really fast. It's also possible that the research is responsible for me waking from my coma."
"That may be true," Vincent said, "but we don't know the motives of the people involved. If they feel they have achieved their objective, they may want you in their control to use you as a lab rat."
"Have you searched Dr Potts' home and office?" Lucas asked, thinking of the quest he still needed to complete.
"The police did because the Doctor's death was suspicious," Victor replied. "It was like they weren't even hiding their intent to get rid of him. I suspect they are not even based in Pallet Town and pulled out any personnel here after killing him. Anyway, my contact told me they found nothing. They cleaned out the two locations.
"But there could be someone still watching you," David added.
Lucas fell into thought. It looked like whoever the organisation was; they were covering their tracks well. So, where else could he look for concealed information? Something was needling at the back of his mind. Lucas rubbed his head in frustration before it came to him.
"The Doctor's Haunter," Lucas exclaimed. "What happens to the Pokemon when their bonded owner dies?"
The adults exchanged glances, and from their expressions, they did not like they had considered the question.
"Well, several things," Sophia said. "If the bond is old enough, they don't revert to its previous state. They usually end up on a Pokemon Reserve or find a new companion. They even find jobs in the military and civilian organisations. The Kanto Government is always desperate for more manpower. Pokemon are frequently tested to ensure they are safe, but otherwise, they are treated as equal citizens."
"Interesting," Lucas hummed. The disparity between wild Pokemon and bonded Pokemon were enormous.
"As for Haunter," David said, "I can't believe we didn't think of it. He may have left some information with his Pokemon."
"See, this happens when you hide information from your extremely intelligent son," Lucas said smugly.
Sophia slapped him playfully. "My son does not get arrogant."
Vincent rolled his eyes. "I tried to tell him you could handle it, but he was being overprotective."
"I can speak for myself," David retorted. "You are right. I'm still treating you like an eleven-year-old boy."
Lucas nodded. "I can understand that, but I feel older than my age. I've been through too much to think otherwise."
Vincent looked at his watch. "I'm going to search for the missing Haunter. But I need to set up Sarah and Jason at my house first."
"But I need Jason," Lucas protested. "We were going to start live streaming today."
"Really?" Sophia asked with interest.
"Can I suggest you hold off for a while," David said. "Just until we can see if we can get ahead of this situation. There are too many unknowns."
"But…." Lucas began.
David held his hand up to forestall him. "Give us a month to investigate it further. After that time, you are free to livestream as you wish, as long as it doesn't get in the way of your studies."
The adults left while Lucas remained there in thought. It was a blessing in disguise that he couldn't livestream today. He had become scattered lately, pursuing different interests while not concentrating on the main issues in front of him first. Lucas realised he had to push himself harder, as he didn't like the feeling of being vulnerable. The next month was going to be busy.
0(((())))0
David walked into his office and sat down in his chair. Tapping the desk in thought, he finally reached for the phone. It was not a call he wanted to make, but his father may have information on the organisation behind the illegal research.
When he spoke of his father to Lucas, he had overstated the relationship between him and his father. Truthfully, their relationship was not as cordial as he had implied. David held a lot of resentment for his father, who hardly had been around when he was a child. He understood his father was an important man with heavy responsibilities. They just came at the sacrifice of his wife and child.
When his mother became sick, he thought he would see his father cut back and spend more time with his mother, but nothing changed. When his mother died when he was Lucas's age, he hated his father. Soon after, he left on his Pokemon journey and never returned home. David had limited contact after that, but relations had thawed when he married Sophia and became a father himself.
"Tobias Walker," came the terse greeting.
"It's David," he said.
"Well, this is a surprise. I can't recall the last time you called me voluntarily."
"I need your help," the words were like acid on his tongue.
"What is it?"
David repeated all he had learned about Lucas, Adrian Potts and the organisation.
There was a heavy silence. David was waiting so long that he wondered if his Dad had hung up, unaware of the fact.
"It sounds like Team Saber," Tobias finally said.
"Team Saber?"
"They were a more extremist cell inside Team Rocket. Giovanni kicked them out because even he found them repulsive. They went underground for awhile but have recently surfaced in the last five years."
"What is their objective," David asked.
"On the surface, it sounds altruistic. Team Saber believes restoring Humans and Pokemon to Balance will save the world. However, they are just hiding behind that as an excuse. They are doing illegal research on humans to make them into weapons with the power to contend with Pokemon. Then there's the usual spiel of taking over the world."
"Great," David said wryly. "Another evil organisation that wants to take over the world. Why do they have such a terrible naming sense? What's so special about having 'Team' in the name?"
"I don't know, but it makes it pretty obvious who the bad guys are, I guess," Tobias said. "At least Team Rocket are only worried about making money. They are very predictable."
David leaned back in his chair. "Just how much trouble will this bring Lucas?"
"It's hard to say," Tobias replied. "I will come to see you in about a month. I need to get my affairs in order to spend some time with my Grandkids."
"You don't have to….," David began.
"I know. But I need to do this. I will call you again closer to the time with my schedule."
Tobias hung up, and David turned around to look out the window. He sure hoped he didn't regret this.

March 16th
One Month later
Lucas collapsed to the ground in exhaustion. Above him, Poliwrath looked down at him with disdain. At least, that's what it looked like; it was hard to tell.
"That's enough for today," Lucas waved his hand tiredly.
"Poli," Poliwrath turned around and left him sprawled on the ground. Poliwrath was one of Dad's Pokemon and was more of a hard-ass than Vincent. Lucas had been running the obstacle course behind the mansion, which was part of a massive habitat and training area for his parents' Pokemon. Until he financed his habitat, this was where he would send his Pokemon. His Pokemon will gain a lot of experience by hanging around the stronger Pokemon.
Lucas had made considerable strides in progress since a month ago. The most important being that he had finally completed his physio and removed his {Feebleness} detriment.

It had taken a lot of hard work, but his body had completely recovered. He had put on a lot of weight, which improved his overall health and now he was working on gaining some body strength and definition. His parents were happily surprised at his rapid improvement but also concerned as well.
His Attributes were looking better, with his intelligence far out in front due to all the studying he did. It was slowing down, however, and he didn't imagine he could train it further than twenty before he needed to spend AP. Dexterity had risen due to him practising with the guitar, although he had spent little time with it because of the busy schedule he maintained. The Pokemon song has made little progress, but his Pokemon seemed to appreciate the effort.
He could now level up, although he wasn't sure how he would earn experience—maybe completing some new quests? Pokemon battles?
Lucas made huge strides with his skills, focusing on levelling the skills he already had, but he learned two new skills.
[Aura Sheen of Armament] (Active) [Lv:4] (Next:88%)[Cost: 40]
Description: The player keeps a thin layer of Aura around the body at all times, like a second skin. Mitigates damage received up to a certain threshold, determined by the skill level and Aura Density.

[Novice Training] (Passive) [Lv: 3] (Next: 64%) [Cost:-]
Description: The beginning of the player's journey to mastering their Physique. A step up from Isometric training but still relatively tame compared to higher levels.
+6% to Physique training speed
+6% to Muscle regeneration
+6% to Muscle preservation
{Aura Sheen of Armament} was a defensive skill that covered his body in a layer of {Aura}. He could create this skill because of his increased levels of Aura Manipulation. It cost a lot initially to cast, but it would remain until it was shattered by reaching the threshold. It was also invisible, which was a relief. He didn't want to be going around with a perpetual glow surrounding him.
{Novice Training} he learned when he stepped his intensity of training up and after he maxed out {Isometric Training}. It involved more aerobic exercises and beginner weight training.
Lucas read up more on Pokemon {Moves} and discovered Type Energy was simply Red Energy that Pokemon had learned to manipulate into refined elemental forms. Lucas wondered if he could do the same with Purple Energy. Could he learn to copy Pokemon {Moves}?
Blue Energy was a lot less versatile and more defensive and restorative. Aura Users could use some attacks, but they were far less destructive than their counterparts. Lucas didn't have that same restraint, so while he mainly relied on his Pokemon to be the heavy hitters, it wouldn't be a bad idea to have some in his arsenal.
He was also working on another skill in sensing living things around him. It was more complicated than it seemed, and he hit a roadblock temporarily, but he would figure it out in time.
A loud cry from above him broke him out of his thoughts An enormous shadow passed over the ground, and Lucas looked up in fright. A massive Pidgeot was circling the mansion, and at first, he froze as he imagined it was a wild Pokemon attacking the city. But as it descended, he saw a figure sitting on the Pidgeot. He relaxed when he realised who it was and started running towards the mansion.
He slowed down when he turned the corner and spotted the Pidgeot grooming itself in the driveway while an older gentleman was speaking to Dad.
So this was his Grandad. He looked like an older, harder version of Dad, except with an impressive beard that reached halfway down his chest. His rigid posture and outstanding presence spoke of a highly disciplined man used to being in command. Lucas found it peculiar how he was dressed; a tight-fitting black suit showing an impressive physique. Was he trying to impress somebody?
His Grandad turned as Lucas approached and stared at him intensely. Lucas fought the urge to squirm under his gaze and came to stand next to his father.
"So this is my Grandson, reborn," he rumbled. "You look soft, boy."
"Well, you look old," Lucas retorted. "Sure you didn't lose your dentures on the flight over?"
"You sure got a mouth on you," Grandpa said. "Aren't you afraid I would feed you to my Pidgeot?"
Pidgeot approached from behind Grandpa and looked appropriately intimidating. The Pokemon was huge and stood at twice the height of his Grandad. Its wingspan must have reached eight metres at full stretch. Did all Pokemon get this big the older they were or was his Pidgeot a special case? He didn't bother trying to {Observe} the Pokemon as it was not something he could read.
Lucas swallowed nervously but held his ground. "I won't taste any good, you know. I am the progeny of that old geezer, and I'm sure you are already aware he probably doesn't taste any good if he is still living."
The Pidgeot trilled in amusement, and Grandpa laughed, turning to his son. "He's got more of a spine than you did at your age. I seem to recall that you cried for the most inane reasons."
"Really?" Lucas asked eagerly
"Enough of that," David growled. "Since you can't remember him, this is Tobias Walker, your Grandad."
Tobias slapped Lucas on the shoulder, almost sending the teen to the ground. "It's good to see you healthy, lad. You have made an extraordinary amount of progress in such a short time."
"I have good reason to be motivated," Lucas replied.
Abigail came running out the front door. "Grandpa!"
Tobias lifted Abigail into the air and spun her around. "How is my little angel?"
Lucas turned toward his Dad. "I'm going to take a shower. Are you sure you won't come to blows while I'm away?." He noticed the tension between the two immediately; they weren't being very subtle.
"I'm sure Abigail will prove to be a proper distraction," David said wryly.

Lucas picked up his Pokemon Egg and felt a mind reach out to his curiously. It conveyed a feeling of anticipation and happiness.
'{Observe}'
Pokemon:? Age: 0 Type: ? Potential: A
Description: A Pokemon Egg. The Pokemon has bonded with the player, and it will hatch any day now.
Affection: 40 Favourite Foods:?
Aura Seed [MAXED]
He had maxed out the Pokemons Aura Seed and reached the second highest tier. It would take some work to raise it further, but it satisfied him with the results. A Pokemon's potential didn't matter regarding parameters below level twenty. After that, the difference in potential widened the gap slowly. However, parameters were only one aspect of a Pokemon's strength, and there are plenty of examples of Pokemon defeating opponents with higher potential. Pseudo-Legendaries were absolute monsters, but they were not impossible to defeat.
He could hardly wait until he met his first Pokemon. They had gotten much closer over the month, and even though communication was still in its infancy, they conveyed enough emotion that it was like they were having an intimate conversation.
Since he couldn't Livestream with Jason for the last month, they decided to use the egg hatching as their launching pad on Tweak. Now that Dad had relaxed his vigilance after the previous month, Jason would spend the next few days here while they waited for the egg to hatch. They used the music room as their streaming room since it was convenient.
He turned his attention to his quests.

Failure: Permanently restricted Charisma.
Lucas needed to focus his priorities on the Awakened quest. Now that he had finished his physio, he had more autonomy to solve the problem. However, where did he start? There had been no sighting of Haunter, so that was a dead end. He would need to devote time to the problem. Leaving it too late made him feel uneasy.
There was still plenty of time to complete the other quest. Lucas was planning to train his Pokemon first and see if he could take him into his MindScape. Gaining a few levels for his Pokemon would be a great start to his Pokemon journey. But he didn't know how real the place was; could it affect his Pokemon? He tried entering his Mind Scape a few times to visit the other Lucas, but something was blocking his entry.
Lucas headed downstairs and into the living room, where his entire family was talking. Even his mother was there. She had been busy lately, spending time in her lab working on a new project. A CEO operated most of the company's business side, which allowed his mother to focus on what she enjoyed most.
"Come sit down next to me," Tobias said. "I want to hear about you being an Aura User."
Lucas sat down next to him. "Well, I don't know how to describe it properly. One day I woke up, and this blue glow surrounded me. It freaked me out at first, but it faded shortly after. Then I learned how to manipulate it, and I have been practising ever since."
"Can you do anything useful yet?" Tobias asked curiously.
Lucas smirked as everyone's attention turned to him. He slapped his chest. "Hit me as hard as you can."
"Lucas, what are you doing?" Sophia asked nervously.
"Don't worry, he's not foolish," David said.
Tobias punched out suddenly with a lot of power. It affected Lucas, and he fell back hard against the sofa.
Aura Sheen of Armament: [25/85]
"Lucas," Sophia rose.
"I'm fine; I didn't feel a thing," Lucas waved her down. He sat up and turned to his Grandad. "You almost broke my armor. You sure pack a punch for an old guy."
"So cool," Abigail ran over and started poking him. "I don't feel anything."
Lucas grabbed her and tickled her tummy. Abigail shrieked and squirmed around. "How about now? Do you feel anything?"
Tobias looked interested. "That's a useful skill. But it won't be much use if I could almost break through the armour."
Lucas let go of Abigail, and she sat down next to him. "I'm still working on it; the amount of damage it absorbs depends on the density of the Aura. But I'm immune to damage and pain while it's active."
"That's amazing," Sophia gushed.
"Yes, it is," David approved.
"Well, I didn't want a repeat of what happened to me, so it properly motivated me," Lucas shrugged.
Tobias stroked his beard in thought. "I have never seen Aura used in such a way. Usually, Aura Users create shields to absorb the impact. This may have some broader applications. If you teach it to the Aura Guardians, I will make sure they compensate you. Do you have a name for it?"
Lucas puffed up his chest. "I have named the skill Aura Sheen of Armament."
Abigail cheered.
"That's a mouthful," Tobias turned and looked at his parents. "I thought he had grown up after his accident. But it seems the kid is still interested in childish things."
Lucas was crushed. He sunk into the sofa and pouted.
"He is fine the way he is," David said tightly. "He is not a soldier that needs discipline."
It shattered a brief uncomfortable silence when Tobias's phone rang.
"Tobias Walker," he answered. Lucas could hear a loud voice from the other side. "Samuel Oak, you old fossil. Are you still alive?"
Tobias held the phone away from his ear as the caller started shouting. "Yes, that's my Pidgeot. Was I supposed to inform the authorities of my arrival beforehand? Is the public in an uproar? Interesting."
David facepalmed when he divined the reason for the call. Sophia sighed and shook her head. Lucas almost laughed at the innocent expression on his Grandad's face.
The call finished, and Tobias put his phone away. "So the grump wants me to visit. How about it, kids? Want to meet the esteemed Professor Oak?"

Shout out and thanks to Giltlawyer9000 for suggesting Aura Sheen of Armament, featured in this chapter. It's a totally awesome name, don't listen to anything Tobias says. Keep the ideas coming.
