After walking deeper into the woods for about ten minutes and catching up to the Doctor they come to a clearing. In the center of the clearing is a blue telephone box. Mulder says, "That looks like the police phone boxes from the 1960s in London. What's that doing here?"
The Doctor says, "This is my ship. Inside." He opens the door and steps in.
Scully says, "Don't see how we will all fit."
Rose smiles, "She's a bit more spacious than she looks. Go on." Scully hesitantly steps inside followed by Mulder and Rose.
Scully says, "This is unbelievable."
Mulder says, "It's bigger on the inside." The sight before them is remarkable, a cavernous room with an operating console in the middle. There is one seat big enough for two.
The Doctor is at the console. His long coat now over the seat. He sticks the sonic into a port on the console. After a moment there are a few beeps. He says, "She's calculating where the Dalek went."
Mulder says, "I'm sorry to be blunt but are you an alien?"
The Doctor says, "Yes. I'm a Time Lord from the planet Gallifrey. Rose is human though."
Mulder nods, "And this is a spaceship made of wood."
The Doctor says, "This is the TARDIS, means Time and Relative Dimension in Space. It travels in space as well as time. And it's not made of wood, it's just a cloaking mechanism meant to allow it to blend in, only the chameleon circuit got jammed a while back while I was visiting the 1960s so it's stuck looking like a phone box but it's ok I like the look."
Rose says, "I love it." The Doctor smiles happily at the praise of his ship.
The console beeps several times. The Doctor looks at the monitor. "Well that's not good, could be worse."
Rose says, "Where'd the Dalek go?"
The Doctor says, "Oh, right it's in Beckley outside of Oxford in 1961." He flips some switches and pulls a lever. A moment later the TARDIS jerks. "Here we go, Beckley, 19th of September 1961."
Mulder says, "Are you serious, 1961 is outside the door?"
Scully says, "Oh brother."
The Doctor says, "Go ahead, step outside. We should be on the outskirts of the town. We followed the Dalek's signal. It hasn't been more than a week since it arrived." Mulder walks over to the door and steps out. Scully follows him.
Beckley, UK 1961 8:21am
Mulder and Scully step outside of the TARDIS into the sunlight. They are on the side of a dirt road. In the distance they see some cottages. Scully says, "Mulder, it was dark when we stepped in there. The sun had just set. How can this be?"
Mulder replies, "Scully, we've traveled in time. This is amazing. This proves so many X-Files right."
Scully says, "There's no way Mulder. Time travel is simply not possible. There has to be some other explanation."
Mulder says, "Well if you need proof this is definitely Beckley. I've been here before. Although I suppose in this case I will come here in the future." The Doctor and Rose step out of the TARDIS.
The Doctor says, "You've been here?"
Mulder says, "Yeah, I studied at Oxford. My roommate lived in Beckley prior to University. I spent the holidays with his family. Not far from here if I remember correctly."
The Doctor says, "Well try not to run into yourself, you do not want to see the consequences of that, might reset the universe."
Mulder says, "I wasn't born until October 1961 so I think I'm safe there."
The Doctor says, "Quite right. Ok we're going to need to track down the Dalek. The Emergency Temporal Shift takes up a lot of power so the Dalek would have needed to go into low power for the first few days it was here. We should check the town for any signs of the Dalek."
Scully says, "If this is indeed 1961, is there anything we should be wary of?"
The Doctor says, "You're rather skeptical." Rose elbows him. "Ouch. Sorry. But yes, avoid getting too involved, especially if it's with people you might know in the future. Agent Mulder, you said your roommate was from here. If you talk to his parents today, give them a fake name and don't linger."
Mulder says, "This all makes sense now."
Rose says, "Sorry? What's that?"
Mulder says, "The first time I met Simon's parents they asked me if I had relatives in England. I said no. They told me the day Simon was born they met a man who looked just like me. They said the man and his friends helped when Simon's mom went into labor suddenly and the midwife couldn't be reached."
The Doctor says, "Well that now makes us part of events."
Scully says, "What do you mean?"
Rose says, "We are part of the timeline of events. If we avoid Simon's parents today it can affect your future. An' dependin' how much it could cause worse problems. Am I right, Doctor?"
The Doctor says, "Yes Rose"
Mulder says, "So the birth of one ordinary person can change things?"
The Doctor says, "Ordinary humans change the course of history the most. It's not the famous ones, the political ones, or even the bad ones. It's an ordinary human who decides to stand up and do what's right. Sometimes it starts at birth."
Scully says, "Birth is just like any other day though."
The Doctor shakes his head, "Birth is a significant event. It's one of those things that can cause time to slow down and speed up at the same time. It's over before you know it but you remember every second of it. You remember faces, sounds, what the weather was like, and every emotion you feel."
Scully ponders, "Do you have children, Doctor?"
He doesn't answer but instead says, "We have to find Simon's parents and locate the Dalek." The Doctor takes Rose's hand and they start walking into town. Mulder and Scully follow.
They make their way into the town. Mulder says, "It really doesn't change that much."
As they are passing an old church they see a man holding a sign that says, 'Beware the Monster.' The Doctor's interest is peaked. He walks over to the man and the others follow him.
The Doctor asks, "Beware of what monster?"
The man says, "The Metal Monster. It's got one eye an' fires a beam of electricity from it's arm. Mad times we live in. Mad."
The Doctor says, "You've seen this metal monster then?"
The man says, "Aye, two nights ago. The end of this very road." He points in the direction, he then keeps rambling on about seeing this metal monster and that others have seen it too.
The Doctor looks at the others and says, "We'll have to split up. Two of us look for Simon's parents and the other two to the end of the road-"
The man interrupts, "You'd be mad to go lookin' for that thing."
Before the Doctor can reply a police officer walks up. He doesn't look happy. "Harry, You can't be out here with that sign. You're scarin'' a lot of people."
Harry responds, "Aye, they should be scared. That metal monster creepin' about."
The police officer says, "Go on home Harry." Harry walks away. The officer looks at the Doctor and the others, "There's no monster. Every time Harry has a bit to much to drink he makes up wild stories, last time it was movin' statues." With that the officer leaves the area.
The Doctor says, "Ok, I'll go with Rose to look for the Dalek. Agents Mulder and Scully, find Simon's parents. Agent Mulder, Don't give them your real name, or else it will be odd when they meet you again. You can call Rose's mobile when you find them."
Scully says, "How do we call her? No cellular service in 1961."
The Doctor says, "Right. Give me your mobile."
Mulder shrugs, "Left mine in the car."
Scully reaches into her pocket and pulls out a cell phone. She hands it to the Doctor. He pulls out his sonic device and scans over it a couple of times. He hands it back to her and says, "There you go universal roaming. Call anyone from any place or time in the universe. Already put Rose's number in there."
Scully says, "That's amazing."
He says, "If you can't locate Simon's parents by noon, meet back here."
Mulder and Scully nod and both pairs walk in separate directions.
